Transform Your Photos into Action Figures with ChatGPT

Upload a photo to ChatGPT Images 2.0 and turn it into a digital boxed collectible with a blister package, accessories, custom text, and a polished product-photo look. This guide includes prompts, mobile and desktop steps, troubleshooting, privacy advice, and a clear explanation of why the result is not a physical 3D toy.

Yes—you can turn a personal photo into a digital boxed action-figure image with ChatGPT. Upload a photo, open ChatGPT Images or use a regular conversation, describe the figure, blister package, backing card, accessories, colors, and text you want, then refine the result with conversational or selected-area edits.

The result is a polished 2D product image, not a physical toy, 3D mesh, STL file, articulated design, or manufacturing-ready package. This guide uses the current ChatGPT Images workflow and includes copy-ready prompts, repair instructions, privacy precautions, and alternatives for more exact design work.

Current interface: As of August 10, 2026, the relevant ChatGPT workflow is ChatGPT Images 2.0. OpenAI says it is available on ChatGPT web, iOS, and Android across Free, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu tiers. You do not need to manually select GPT-4o or a separate image model; the current Images experience works across ChatGPT models. See OpenAI’s current ChatGPT Images documentation and its Images 2.0 announcement.

What is the ChatGPT action-figure effect?

This popular format combines a portrait transformation with the visual language of a retail collectible. ChatGPT renders a person, pet, couple, or fictional character as a miniature toy and places it inside a clear plastic blister or clamshell package. Behind the plastic is a printed cardboard backing card, usually with a nameplate, role, tagline, fictional product line, and molded compartments containing accessories.

  • A cardboard backing card with a deliberate color palette and visual identity.
  • A retail-style header, name, role, tagline, or fictional product-line label.
  • Accessories arranged in separate molded compartments.
  • Studio product-photography lighting and a straight-on or slightly angled catalog composition.

The format spread widely on social media in April 2025 after OpenAI launched native image generation in ChatGPT. That history is useful context, but “action figure effect” is a description of an image format—not the name of an official OpenAI toy product. OpenAI’s original image-generation announcement and PetaPixel’s coverage of the trend show how the packaging format became popular.

What can you make?

The same basic prompt can produce very different visual identities. For a painting or illustration audience, think of the package as a small composition: the figure is the focal point, the backing card controls the color harmony, the accessories create secondary points of interest, and the blister highlights provide a material contrast.

Format Useful direction
Premium collectible Neutral backing card, restrained typography, painted vinyl, subtle plastic reflections, and catalog photography.
Retro toy line Original 1980s-inspired colors, bold shapes, nostalgic lighting, and fictional branding. Do not copy a real toy company or franchise.
Professional starter pack Show a person with tools of a trade, such as brushes, a palette, a camera, a laptop, or a sketchbook.
Pet figure Preserve the coat markings, ears, face shape, and favorite objects while giving the animal a playful molded-toy pose.
Couple or team set Use separate reference images only when necessary and explicitly identify which image belongs to each figure.
Fantasy or science-fiction character Keep the reference person recognizable while changing the outfit, accessories, setting, or fictional role.
Minimalist designer figurine Use a quiet palette, sparse lettering, clean geometry, and fewer accessories.
Social-media portrait Request a square composition, while retaining enough package structure for the blister-pack idea to read clearly.

What you need before starting

A ChatGPT account with image access

ChatGPT image creation is available on the Free tier as well as paid and organizational tiers, but image generation and image uploads have separate usage limits. Free limits are dynamic and can change, so do not rely on a fixed number of free images per day. When a limit is reached, ChatGPT will tell you when you can use the tool again or whether another plan is required. OpenAI describes the current Free-tier limits in its Free Tier FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A supported reference image

ChatGPT accepts PNG, JPEG/JPG, and non-animated GIF image files, with a maximum size of 20 MB per image. You can confirm the current requirements in OpenAI’s image-input FAQ.

The file limit is a technical requirement; the following photo recommendations are practical heuristics rather than hard requirements:

  • Use a sharp, well-lit image with the face visible.
  • Choose a front-facing or three-quarter view when possible.
  • Use a full-body photo if the clothing, shoes, pose, or silhouette matters. A headshot can still work, but ChatGPT will infer or invent the body and outfit.
  • Avoid heavy shadows, sunglasses, extreme angles, motion blur, and a cluttered background.
  • Start with one clear subject. Multiple people make identity and accessory placement harder.
  • Crop out documents, badges, addresses, license plates, unrelated people, and other sensitive details.
  • Use a portrait-oriented source if you want a tall retail package, or tell ChatGPT explicitly to create a vertical composition.

OpenAI warns that unclear or ambiguous images can produce less accurate results and that uploaded images may be resized before analysis. The model does not process the original filename or metadata according to the image-input documentation, but that is not a promise that the image is never stored or processed by the service.

Permission to use the image

Use your own photo or obtain permission before uploading someone else’s likeness. This is especially important for children, private individuals, coworkers, clients, celebrities, and images that contain copyrighted artwork or branded material. OpenAI’s Terms of Use place responsibility on the user to have the rights, licenses, and permissions needed to provide uploaded content.

How to create an action figure in ChatGPT on desktop

  1. Open ChatGPT. Go to ChatGPT on the web, or use the desktop browser interface.
  2. Start image generation. Select Images in the ChatGPT interface and enter a prompt, or start an ordinary conversation and attach the photo. OpenAI supports both routes.
  3. Upload the reference. Select the + or attachment control, then choose Add photos & files. On desktop, you can also drag an image into the composer or paste an image copied to your clipboard.
  4. Paste a structured prompt. Identify the subject, toy materials, package layout, clothing, pose, accessories, backing-card colors, text, aspect ratio, and elements that must remain unchanged.
  5. Generate the image. Give ChatGPT a moment to construct the figure and package.
  6. Inspect the result. Check the face, the entire package, accessory compartments, text, invented logos, and whether the subject actually looks like a toy.
  7. Refine the existing image. Open the generated image and request a conversational edit, or use the selection tool to highlight the part that needs changing.
  8. Choose the composition. Use the aspect-ratio picker or ask for a vertical, square, or other supported composition. Vertical is normally best for a tall blister package; square is convenient for a social-media post.
  9. Save or share. Current controls include Copy, Save, and Share. Generated images are automatically saved under Images. To remove an image from My Images, delete the conversation in which it was created. The current controls and editor behavior are documented by OpenAI.

How to do it on iPhone or Android

  1. Open the ChatGPT app.
  2. Attach the photo through the composer.
  3. Paste the action-figure prompt and submit it.
  4. Tap the generated image to open the image view.
  5. Choose Edit to request a conversational change.
  6. Choose Select, highlight the relevant area, tap Next, and describe the edit.
  7. Save or share the finished image.

Selection is useful for changing a face, accessory, header, or part of the backing card without restating the whole design. It is not a perfectly bounded mask, however: OpenAI warns that an edit can extend beyond the highlighted area. In your instruction, identify the target area and list the important elements that must remain unchanged.

Copy-and-paste action-figure prompt

Replace the bracketed fields, attach your photo, and submit the prompt as one message:

Use the uploaded photo as the reference for the person’s facial features, hairstyle, skin tone, and overall appearance.

Create a polished digital product photograph of this person as a stylized collectible action figure inside a clear plastic blister package on a printed cardboard backing card.

Make the figure toy-like and three-dimensional, with molded plastic and realistic miniature proportions. Keep the person recognizable, but do not make it look like an ordinary human standing inside a package.

Package layout:
- One centered figure in the main molded compartment
- Three accessories in separate molded compartments
- A retail-style header at the top
- Name: “[NAME]”
- Subtitle: “[ROLE OR TAGLINE]”
- Color palette: [COLORS]
- Packaging style: [RETRO 1980s / PREMIUM COLLECTIBLE / MINIMALIST / FUTURISTIC / CUTE]
- Product-photography lighting
- Entire package visible with comfortable margins
- Vertical composition

Accessories:
1. [ACCESSORY]
2. [ACCESSORY]
3. [ACCESSORY]

Keep the facial features, hairstyle, and clothing details from the reference recognizable. Do not add extra people, extra limbs, unrelated objects, brand logos, copyrighted character logos, or invented text. Spell the name and subtitle exactly as written.

Prompts for specific styles

Premium realistic product mockup

Transform the uploaded person into a premium collectible action figure shown in sealed retail blister packaging.

The figure should have realistic molded vinyl and painted plastic materials, subtle toy-scale proportions, clean sculpted details, and a confident upright pose. Place the figure in the center of a transparent blister shell with a printed backing card behind it.

Use a studio product photograph look: softbox lighting, controlled reflections on the plastic, sharp focus, realistic packaging depth, and a clean retail catalog composition.

Header text:
“[NAME]”
Subtitle:
“[ROLE]”

Place these accessories in individual compartments:
- [ITEM 1]
- [ITEM 2]
- [ITEM 3]

Use a [COLOR] backing card and a [STYLE] visual identity. Keep the person recognizable from the reference photo. Show the full package from top to bottom. Use only the two specified text elements and avoid logos or extra lettering.

Original retro toy-line package

Using the uploaded photo as the likeness reference, create a fictional 1980s collectible action-figure package.

Show the person as a stylized plastic action figure in a clear blister pack with a colorful printed card, slightly nostalgic product photography, bold original typography, a small fictional product-line emblem, and three accessories in separate compartments.

Name on package: “[NAME]”
Role beneath it: “[ROLE]”
Color palette: [COLORS]
Accessories: [LIST]

Make the design original and avoid copying any existing toy company, franchise, character, or logo. Preserve the person’s recognizable facial features, hairstyle, and outfit. Keep the full package visible in a vertical composition.

“Inspired by a decade” is safer and more flexible than asking for a real manufacturer, franchise, or branded toy line. Use original fictional branding unless you have permission to use a third-party identity.

Professional starter pack

Turn the uploaded person into a boxed collectible professional starter pack. Preserve the person’s recognizable face, hairstyle, skin tone, and outfit, but render them as a polished molded-vinyl figure in a clear retail blister package.

Name: “[NAME]”
Role: “[PROFESSION OR TAGLINE]”
Backing-card palette: [COLORS]

Place these tools in individual molded compartments:
1. [TOOL OR OBJECT]
2. [TOOL OR OBJECT]
3. [TOOL OR OBJECT]
4. [TOOL OR OBJECT]

Use a clean studio product photograph, realistic plastic reflections, a complete vertical package with comfortable margins, and only the specified text. Do not add logos, extra people, or unrelated objects.

Pet collectible

Turn the uploaded pet photo into a cute collectible action figure in a clear blister package.

Keep the pet’s coat color, markings, face shape, ears, and recognizable features. Make the pet a polished toy figure with miniature proportions and a playful pose.

Package header: “[PET NAME]”
Subtitle: “[FUNNY ROLE OR TAGLINE]”
Accessories in separate compartments:
- [TOY]
- [TREAT]
- [FAVORITE OBJECT]

Use [COLOR] packaging, soft studio product lighting, a printed cardboard backing card, and a vertical retail-package composition. Do not add extra animals or unreadable text.

Couple or team set

Use multiple reference images only when they are genuinely necessary. Label each image clearly in the prompt so that ChatGPT does not merge faces, clothing, or accessories:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Create one boxed collectible action-figure set using the uploaded reference photos.

Person 1 is the figure on the left and should retain the facial features, hairstyle, and outfit from Reference Image 1.
Person 2 is the figure on the right and should retain the facial features, hairstyle, and outfit from Reference Image 2.

Place both figures in one clear blister package with separate accessory compartments. Label the package “[NAME 1] & [NAME 2]” and use the subtitle “[TAGLINE].”

Do not merge their faces, clothing, or accessories. Do not add additional people. Keep the full package visible in a vertical product photograph.

Fantasy or science-fiction figure

Use the uploaded photo as the likeness reference and transform the subject into an original fantasy collectible action figure in clear blister packaging.

Preserve the subject’s recognizable facial structure, hairstyle, skin tone, and expression, but give the figure an original [FANTASY OR SCI-FI ROLE] outfit with molded and painted miniature details. Use a [COLOR] backing card, a clear blister shell, dramatic but controlled studio lighting, and separate compartments for these accessories: [LIST].

Use the name “[NAME]” and subtitle “[ROLE].” Create original visual design only: no existing franchise characters, logos, costumes, or brand marks. Show the entire vertical package with comfortable margins.

Square social-media version

Create a square social-media image of the uploaded person as a recognizable molded-vinyl collectible figure in a clear blister package. Preserve the facial features, hairstyle, skin tone, and outfit. Include a printed backing card, three separate accessory compartments, the name “[NAME],” and the short subtitle “[TAGLINE].” Use a clean front-facing product photograph with soft studio light, controlled plastic reflections, original fictional branding, and enough margin that the package is not cropped. Use only the specified text.

Why structured prompts work better

“Make me look like a toy” leaves the package, materials, camera angle, accessories, typography, and composition undefined. A stronger prompt describes the object in layers:

  1. Identity: State what must remain recognizable—facial structure, hairstyle, skin tone, expression, outfit, or pet markings.
  2. Transformation: Describe the subject as a molded vinyl or painted-plastic miniature, not simply as a person with a toy filter.
  3. Package architecture: Specify the main compartment, backing card, blister shell, header, accessory wells, and margins.
  4. Visual treatment: Add lighting, materials, camera angle, color palette, and product-photography direction.
  5. Text: Give the exact name and short subtitle, then ask for no other lettering.
  6. Negative constraints: Say what must not appear—extra people, extra limbs, unrelated objects, real logos, invented slogans, or a cropped package.

This figure/package/accessories/background/finish approach is a practical prompting method, not a guaranteed formula. It reflects the way current action-figure prompt guides break down the visual object. See this example prompt resource for additional structural ideas.

Keep the accessory list small

Three accessories are a good starting point. Four or five may work, but a long list can cause objects to merge, disappear, or become unrecognizable. This is an editorial recommendation, not an OpenAI limit. Name each accessory separately and request an individual molded compartment.

Separate identity from style

Put likeness instructions in one sentence and style instructions in another. For example:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Preserve the person’s facial structure, hairstyle, skin tone, and recognizable features from the reference photo.

Render the subject as a polished miniature vinyl action figure in retail packaging.

This makes it clearer that “stylized” applies to the rendering and materials, not permission to replace the person’s identity. Even with strong instructions, likeness is not guaranteed: facial drift, changed body proportions, and invented clothing details can occur.

Inspect the first result before editing

Do not judge only whether the image looks attractive. Check whether it satisfies the design brief:

  • Likeness: Does the face retain recognizable features from the reference?
  • Toy identity: Is it clearly a miniature molded figure, rather than an ordinary person standing behind plastic?
  • Package completeness: Are the header, bottom edge, blister shell, figure, and accessories all visible?
  • Layout: Does every accessory have its own compartment?
  • Text: Is the name correctly spelled and readable?
  • Unwanted invention: Did ChatGPT add logos, slogans, extra objects, extra people, or additional limbs?
  • Material: Do the plastic highlights and card surface make the package read as a physical retail object?

If the overall concept is wrong, regenerate with a clearer prompt. If only one part is wrong, edit the existing image instead of starting over.

Copy-ready repair prompts

Restore the face

Edit only the face of the action figure. Make it more closely resemble the uploaded reference photo, preserving the original hairstyle, skin tone, expression, packaging, clothing, accessories, lighting, and composition.

Correct the name

Change only the package header. It must read exactly “[NAME]”. Keep the person, figure, accessories, packaging colors, lighting, and composition unchanged.

Correct the subtitle

Change only the subtitle beneath the name to “[ROLE OR TAGLINE]”. Preserve every other part of the image exactly.

Replace an accessory

Replace only the accessory in the upper-right compartment with a [DESCRIPTION]. Keep it in its own molded compartment and leave the figure, packaging, text, and all other accessories unchanged.

Remove an unwanted element

Remove the extra object and any unintended text. Preserve the package shape, figure, accessories, lighting, and backing card. Do not change the person’s face or outfit.

Restore missing margins

Regenerate the image in a vertical aspect ratio. Show the entire blister package from top to bottom with extra space around all edges. Do not crop the header, bottom edge, accessories, or figure.

Make the figure more toy-like

Keep the person recognizable, but make the subject clearly a miniature molded collectible figure: polished painted plastic, simplified toy-scale anatomy, sculpted hair, molded clothing details, and subtle plastic highlights. Keep the package unchanged.

Common problems and how to fix them

The face does not look like the person

Common causes include a low-resolution or poorly lit source, an extreme viewing angle, too many people or reference images, and a prompt that emphasizes costume more strongly than identity. A major edit can also regenerate the whole composition and introduce new facial drift.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Upload one clearer reference image.
  2. Explicitly mention the facial features, hairstyle, skin tone, and expression that should remain recognizable.
  3. Use a face-only edit rather than changing the package, outfit, and accessories at the same time.
  4. Tell ChatGPT to preserve the existing package, lighting, clothing, and accessories.
  5. Compare several generations instead of expecting perfect identity accuracy.

OpenAI describes improved consistency and preservation in its current image-generation announcement, not a guarantee of exact likeness. Do not market or represent the result as biometric or identity-accurate.

It looks like a person behind plastic

Add physical-material language: molded plastic, painted miniature, polished vinyl, sculpted hair, toy-scale proportions, molded clothing details, transparent blister shell, separate accessory compartments, retail product photograph. Avoid vague instructions such as “make me look cool” or “turn this into a toy.”

The package is cropped

Ask for a vertical composition and require the entire package—from the top header to the bottom edge—to be visible with comfortable margins. Current image generation has improved with longer compositions, but cropping can still occur. The original 2025 announcement discussed cropping limitations, while the current Images 2.0 announcement describes improvements rather than perfection.

The lettering is misspelled or unreadable

Keep the text short, place the most important wording in the header, and request exact spelling. Current image generation renders text more reliably and handles denser text better than earlier versions, but it remains imperfect. Proofread every result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a final poster, product advertisement, logo, price, barcode, legal disclaimer, serial number, or production package, generate the artwork with minimal text and add the typography in Photoshop, Canva, Illustrator, or another design application. AI-generated barcodes and legal copy should not be trusted.

Accessories merge together

  • Reduce the number of accessories.
  • Name each object separately.
  • Request one molded compartment per item.
  • Use a simple, front-facing product shot.
  • Add complex props in later edits rather than requesting everything at once.

A selected-area edit changes unrelated parts

Selection highlights are not always precise, and OpenAI warns that edits may extend beyond the selected region. Use a conversational instruction that says exactly what to change and explicitly lists what must remain unchanged. If the result deteriorates, return to an earlier generation and make one smaller edit at a time.

The upload fails

Check the following:

  • The file is PNG, JPEG/JPG, or a non-animated GIF.
  • The individual image is no larger than 20 MB.
  • You have not reached a separate image-upload or generation limit.
  • You are signed into the intended ChatGPT account or workspace.
  • There is no current service outage.

For broader upload and storage rules, consult OpenAI’s File Uploads FAQ.

ChatGPT refuses the request

A benign self-portrait or authorized pet transformation is a normal creative use case. Refusals can occur when the request involves non-consensual use of a person’s likeness, deceptive impersonation, sexualized or exploitative content, minors in unsafe contexts, political campaigning or targeted political persuasion, fraud, scams, or confusing use of copyrighted characters and branded assets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not try to bypass a safety refusal. Use your own or an authorized likeness, make the subject an original fictional character, remove deceptive or exploitative elements, or request a generic toy concept instead. OpenAI’s Usage Policies address likeness misuse, impersonation, fraud, and related restrictions.

Privacy and consent before uploading a face

Use your own image or ask first

Obtain consent before transforming another person’s likeness, especially if the result will be posted publicly, used in a promotion, or made to suggest that the person endorsed a product. Do not create a deceptive image that could be mistaken for an authentic product, endorsement, statement, or event.

Remove private background details

Crop or blur the following before upload:

  • Government IDs and medical information.
  • Work badges and school uniforms.
  • Home addresses and documents.
  • License plates.
  • Other people who have not consented.
  • Distinctive private locations.

OpenAI says new conversations after opting out will not be used to train its models. Business, Enterprise, Edu, and API offerings have different data-use commitments, so an organizational user should check the terms for the relevant workspace. See How ChatGPT uses your data.

Consider Temporary Chat

For a sensitive personal photo, review whether Temporary Chat is appropriate. OpenAI says Temporary Chats are not saved in history, are not used to train models, and do not create memories. They are deleted from OpenAI’s systems after 30 days, subject to stated safety and legal exceptions. Details can change, so review OpenAI’s memory and browsing guidance.

Is the result a real action figure?

No. The ordinary ChatGPT workflow creates a flat, generated image of an imagined product. It does not create:

  • A 3D mesh or sculpt.
  • An STL or other 3D-printing file.
  • An articulated joint design.
  • A manufacturing-ready figure.
  • A mold, production specification, or blister-package dieline.

To make a physical figure, you would need a separate workflow: concept approval, 3D modeling or digital sculpting, topology and articulation planning, test printing, material and paint decisions, packaging design, and manufacturing. The ChatGPT image can serve as a visual concept or reference sheet, but it is not a production asset by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can you sell or commercially use the generated image?

This question has several separate parts.

OpenAI’s individual Terms of Use state that, between the user and OpenAI and to the extent permitted by law, the user owns the output and retains ownership of input. The terms also say that users are responsible for supplied content and that outputs may not be unique.

That does not automatically give you rights to:

  • A third-party logo, trademark, or packaging identity.
  • A franchise character, costume, emblem, or fictional world.
  • A celebrity’s likeness or another person’s image.
  • A photograph you did not create or license.
  • Claims, endorsements, or branding that could mislead customers.

Copyright protection for AI-generated material also depends on applicable law and the amount of human authorship. Commercial publication can raise separate trademark, publicity-right, privacy, licensing, and contractual questions. For a commercial package, use original fictional branding, obtain releases for other people’s likenesses, and have a qualified lawyer review a campaign that relies on a real person, brand, or franchise.

AI provenance and watermarks

OpenAI says images generated with ChatGPT, Codex, and its API include C2PA metadata and SynthID watermarks. You can use OpenAI’s verification tool to check supported provenance signals. A missing signal does not prove that an image was not generated by OpenAI: metadata can be stripped and watermarks can be degraded by editing, resizing, screenshots, or platform processing. See OpenAI’s C2PA and SynthID documentation.

ChatGPT alternatives

ChatGPT is a particularly convenient choice when you want to upload a photo, generate the package, and refine the same result through conversation. Other tools may suit a different priority:

Tool Best fit Important trade-off
Gemini Readers already working in Google’s ecosystem who want image uploads and style or image transformations. Features and availability depend on Google’s current product and account access. See Google’s image-generation documentation.
Midjourney Visual exploration, stylized concepts, and image-prompted variations. Midjourney says image prompts guide a new creation rather than copying a reference exactly. Its Editor is the more appropriate route for targeted changes to an existing image; see also its image-prompt documentation.
Photoshop and Firefly Final typography, compositing, brand assets, selective cleanup, and production control. They involve a more hands-on design workflow. Photoshop documents reference images with Generative Fill, while Firefly documents Generative Fill and reference images.

A practical workflow for the cleanest result

  1. Prepare the source. Pick one sharp image, crop private details, and use a front-facing or three-quarter view.
  2. Define the product. Decide whether it is premium, retro, cute, minimalist, fantasy, professional, or futuristic.
  3. Limit the props. Choose three meaningful accessories rather than listing everything associated with the subject.
  4. Generate the broad composition. Prioritize likeness, figure pose, package architecture, and overall lighting.
  5. Repair one defect at a time. Fix the face, text, accessory, color, or crop in separate edits.
  6. Finish typography externally when precision matters. Keep AI lettering minimal if the image will become a real advertisement, package, poster, or portfolio piece.
  7. Save the best generation. Do not assume every later edit preserves the same face or composition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the ChatGPT action-figure effect free?

Image creation is available on ChatGPT’s Free tier, but Free users have separate limits for image creation and image uploads. Those limits are dynamic and can change, so there is no reliable fixed number of free generations per day.

Do I need to select GPT-4o?

No. Older tutorials often told users to select GPT-4o, but OpenAI’s current ChatGPT Images workflow uses the Images experience across ChatGPT models. You generally do not need to manually select an image model.

Can I use a pet photo?

Yes. Ask ChatGPT to preserve the pet’s coat color, markings, ears, face shape, and other recognizable features, then specify a playful pose, package name, and a small list of accessories.

Can I use someone else’s photo?

Only with appropriate permission and rights. Do not use another person’s likeness for deceptive impersonation, misleading endorsements, or other harmful purposes. Crop out unrelated people and private information before uploading.

Why does the generated face look wrong?

A low-resolution or poorly lit source, an extreme angle, multiple subjects, or a style-heavy prompt can cause facial drift. Upload one clearer reference and request a face-only edit while telling ChatGPT to preserve the package, outfit, lighting, and accessories.

Why is the package text misspelled?

AI-generated lettering has improved but is still imperfect. Use short text, request exact spelling, proofread the result, and add final names, logos, prices, barcodes, and legal copy in a design application when accuracy matters.

Can ChatGPT create a 3D-printable action figure?

Not through this image workflow. ChatGPT creates a 2D image of a toy concept. A real figure requires separate 3D modeling or sculpting, test printing, and manufacturing preparation.

How do I remove a generated image from ChatGPT?

Generated images are saved under ChatGPT’s Images area. OpenAI’s current instructions say to remove an image from My Images, delete the conversation in which it was created.

Does ChatGPT watermark the image?

OpenAI says images generated with ChatGPT, Codex, and its API include C2PA metadata and SynthID watermarks. Metadata can be stripped and watermarks can be degraded, so a missing signal is not conclusive proof about an image’s origin.

Can I use the image commercially?

OpenAI’s Terms of Use state that, between you and OpenAI and to the extent permitted by law, you own the output. That does not clear third-party trademarks, franchise characters, photographs, or other people’s likenesses. Commercial use may also involve publicity, privacy, licensing, and copyright issues.

The Bottom Line

The reliable recipe is simple: upload a clear, authorized photo; describe a complete retail package rather than merely saying “make me a toy”; keep the accessory list short; request exact but minimal text; and repair one area at a time. ChatGPT can produce an appealing digital action-figure mockup, but treat it as concept artwork—not as a physical toy, 3D model, or automatically cleared commercial package.
