Diamond painting is straightforward once you understand the code: match each printed canvas symbol to its labeled resin drill, uncover only a small sticky area, and press the drill into place. This guide shows the full process, including how to pause cleanly and which finishing steps are optional.
Diamond painting is a coded mosaic craft: you pick up small faceted resin drills and press them onto the matching symbols of a sticky, pre-printed canvas. The key is to work in small covered sections, match every symbol carefully, and keep the adhesive clean.

Unpack the kit and spread the canvas on a clean, level surface where it can stay undisturbed. Keep the printed legend visible, and leave unopened drill bags contained until you need them.
If the canvas curls from being rolled in its packaging, gently roll it in the opposite direction to help it lie flatter. Do not crease the canvas or press down on the uncovered adhesive.

2. Match one canvas symbol to its drill packet
Choose a symbol in the area you want to work on. Find that symbol on the canvas legend, then locate the drill packet with the corresponding code. The legend—not the apparent color alone—is the reliable match.
Pour a small amount of that drill color into the tray. Lightly shake the tray until the drills settle into its grooves with their faceted, sparkly sides facing upward. This makes them easier to pick up consistently.

If your kit includes a wax-loaded pen, press its tip into the wax. Then touch the tip to the faceted side of one drill to lift it. If your kit uses tweezers instead, use them to pick up and position the drill; follow the kit’s specific instructions.
Do not worry if a drill drops or sits upside down in the tray. Set it aside or shake the tray again rather than forcing an awkward pickup.

4. Peel back only a small section of the protective film
Lift the protective film from only the portion you can reasonably finish before stopping. Keep the rest of the film attached so the adhesive stays free of dust, lint, hair, and accidental contact.
You can begin in a corner, or start with a color that appears often—either is a workable way to stay organized. There is no universal “correct” starting corner or color order.

- Pick up one drill with the applicator.
- Position it over the matching printed symbol.
- Press it gently onto the adhesive.
- Continue through the exposed area, checking the legend whenever a symbol is unfamiliar.
Work one color at a time if that keeps you organized, or finish a small area using several colors before moving on. Both approaches work. Aim for neat rows and even spacing, but minor alignment differences are usually easy to correct while the area is still accessible.
When you finish a color or section, choose the next code and repeat: identify the symbol, pour a small amount of its drills into the tray, and place them on the corresponding symbols. Continue until the entire design is covered.

6. Protect the canvas when you pause
Before taking a break, lay the protective cover back over any exposed adhesive. Close or contain the drills so they do not spill or become mixed with another code.
- Keep food and drinks away from the work surface.
- Wash your hands after using art materials.
- Store spare drills and tools where children cannot access them unsupervised.
7. Finish and display the piece
Once every symbol is covered, inspect the canvas for missed spots or drills that need gentle realignment. If you have a roller, you may roll it lightly over the completed work to encourage adhesion. Use a light touch; pressing hard can damage drill tops.

Sealing is optional. Some makers seal a finished canvas to help retain drills and reduce debris sticking to any exposed adhesive. Others leave it unsealed, especially when displaying it behind glass. Choose a sealer only if it is compatible with your canvas and display plan, and follow that product’s directions.
Frame the finished canvas or display it another way that suits its size and backing. Framing hardware is not included with every kit, so measure the completed canvas and choose a frame or mounting method accordingly.

A simple working routine
For a smooth first project, repeat this loop: expose a small section, select one symbol and its matching drill packet, align a small amount in the tray, place the drills, then re-cover the adhesive before stepping away. It is slower to begin this way, but it prevents the two most common frustrations: mixed-up drill colors and a dusty sticky canvas.
