Yes, you can use an iPad as a drawing tablet for a Windows PC, but Apple Pencil pairing alone is not enough. Astropad Studio, Duet Display or Duet Pro, and Luna Display provide the connection layer that sends the Windows display to the iPad and sends Apple Pencil input back to the PC. The best first setup is a compatible Pencil, supported software, and a USB data connection.

Apple Pencil (USB-C): Device Compatibility Check Required
  • WHY APPLE PENCIL - With pixel-perfect precision, tilt sensitivity, and low latency, Apple Pencil (USB-C) makes note-taking, signing documents, and drawing easy at an affordable price. It pairs and charges via USB-C and can magnetically attach to your iPad.
  • COMPATIBILITY - Apple Pencil (USB-C) works with iPad Pro 13-inch (M4 and M5); iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th generation); iPad Pro 11-inch (M4 and M5); iPad Pro 11-inch (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation); iPad Air 13-inch (M2, M3, M4); iPad Air 11-inch (M2 and M3); iPad Air (4th and 5th generation); iPad (A16), iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPad mini (6th generation); and iPad (10th generation).
  • EASY AND NATURAL - Write, sketch, and draw with pixel-perfect precision. Apple Pencil (USB-C) does it all with low latency and tilt sensitivity. Apple Pencil pairs and charges via USB-C and features a flat edge that attaches magnetically.
  • TRANSFORMS IPAD INTO A CANVAS - Draw, sketch, color, take notes, and mark up documents. Use built-in apps like Notes and Freeform, or choose from over a million more apps available on the App Store. And for pros, use Apple Pencil hover on iPad Pro and iPad Air to preview your mark before you make it.
  • WHAT'S IN THE BOX - Apple Pencil (USB-C)

The choice depends mainly on your Windows art application, pressure-sensitivity requirements, connection preference, and willingness to buy dedicated hardware. The Apple Pencil must match the exact iPad model before any of the software options can work as intended.

Key takeaways

  • An iPad cannot work as a Windows drawing tablet by pairing Apple Pencil alone; you need a connection app or a hardware-and-software bridge.
  • Apple Pencil compatibility depends on the exact iPad model, and Apple Pencil Pro, USB-C, first-generation, and second-generation models are not universally interchangeable.
  • USB is a sensible first connection because it removes wireless-network variables, while Astropad Studio also supports network connections and Duet documents a charging-cable workflow.
  • Pressure sensitivity depends on the connection software, the Apple Pencil, and the Windows art application’s supported tablet-input API.
  • Astropad Studio and Duet are primarily software-based routes; Luna Display requires dedicated hardware and currently supports PC-to-iPad mode on Windows.

Can you use an iPad as a drawing tablet for a Windows PC?

Yes, you can use an iPad as a drawing tablet for a Windows PC, but Apple Pencil pairing alone is not enough. Astropad Studio, Duet Display or Duet Pro, and Luna Display provide the connection layer that sends the Windows display to the iPad and sends Apple Pencil input back to the PC. The best first setup is a compatible Pencil, supported software, and a USB data connection.

The iPad usually behaves as a mirrored or extended display rather than as a native Windows graphics tablet. Your Windows drawing application remains open on the PC, while the iPad provides the touch and Pencil surface. Astropad describes this approach as turning the iPad into a drawing tablet by mirroring the desktop display in its Astropad Studio documentation.

What do you need before setting up the iPad?

You need four things: a Windows PC, an iPad, an Apple Pencil compatible with that iPad, and a connection method. The connection method can be Astropad Studio, Duet Display or Duet Pro, or Luna Display with its dedicated hardware unit.

1. Identify the exact iPad model

Check the iPad model and generation before buying a Pencil or installing software. Apple separates its current Pencil range into Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C), Apple Pencil (2nd generation), and Apple Pencil (1st generation). Apple’s Apple Pencil compatibility chart lists which Pencil works with each iPad generation.

Examples from Apple’s compatibility information include Apple Pencil Pro support for current iPad Pro M4 and M5 models, current iPad Air M2, M3, and M4 models, and iPad mini A17 Pro. Apple Pencil (USB-C) supports a broader group that includes iPad 10th generation, iPad A16, iPad mini 6th generation, several iPad Air generations, and several iPad Pro generations. Apple Pencil (1st generation) supports iPad mini 5th generation, iPad 6th through 9th generation, iPad Air 3rd generation, and older iPad Pro models.

Some USB-C iPads need a USB-C-to-Apple-Pencil adapter to pair and charge Apple Pencil (1st generation). Do not treat Apple Pencil models as interchangeable. The safe buying sequence is: identify the iPad model, use Apple’s compatibility chart, and then choose the Pencil listed for that iPad. You can check Apple Pencil compatibility before purchasing.

2. Pair and charge the Apple Pencil

Pair the Pencil with the iPad before troubleshooting the Windows connection. The Pencil must be charged and paired with the iPad for the PC connection software to receive Pencil input. Apple explains the pairing and charging process in its Apple Pencil connection and pairing instructions.

Please verify your model in [Settings > General > About] before purchasing.
  • Tilt Sensitivity: The iPad Stylus features tilt sensitivity, allowing you to create varying line thicknesses and shadows by adjusting the angle of your pencil for apple ipad 10th generation.
  • Palm Rejection: You can comfortably rest your hand on the screen without gloves while using the stylus pen for ipad.
  • Magnetic Adsorption: The iPad pencil 10th generation magnetically attaches to iPads released from 2018~2026 just like 2nd generation for Apple Pencil. Note: Does not support magnetic charging.
  • Type-C Fast Charging: Fully charges the ipad pencil in just 15 minutes for up to 9 hours of use. Note: Sleeps after 5 minutes of inactivity to save power.

Apple documents tilt support for shading or line-width changes on supported Pencil models. Apple Pencil 1st generation, Apple Pencil 2nd generation, and Apple Pencil Pro can also use pressure to darken a line in supported iPad drawing features, but the Windows connection software and the Windows art application must also pass and interpret that input correctly.

3. Install the connection software

Install the iPad application and the Windows companion software for Astropad Studio or Duet. Luna Display uses the Luna hardware unit together with its software. The software version, Windows edition, iPadOS version, and supported-device list can change, so check the vendor’s current requirements before committing to a purchase.

Which iPad-to-PC drawing-tablet method should you choose?

Choose Astropad Studio for an artist-focused workflow with Windows Ink pressure configuration, Duet Pro for a straightforward wired-first second-display and drawing workflow, or Luna Display if you specifically want dedicated display-extension hardware. The comparison below describes the documented differences rather than claiming a universal latency or quality winner.

Option Hardware required Connection approach Drawing input Important Windows limitation Best fit
Astropad Studio iPad, Apple Pencil, Windows PC; no dedicated Luna unit USB or supported network connection Apple Pencil pressure controls, gestures, shortcuts; pressure uses Windows Ink The Windows art application must support Windows Ink or a compatible TabletPC/Windows Ink setting Artists using compatible Windows creative applications
Duet Display iPad, Apple Pencil, Windows PC Duet documents connecting the iPad with its charging cable; Mac and PC support is documented Second-display and touchscreen workflow; drawing features depend on the tier Confirm the current plan and supported device list before relying on drawing features Readers prioritizing a simple wired second-display setup
Duet Pro iPad, Apple Pencil, Windows PC Wired-first Duet workflow, with supported connection options subject to the current product configuration Pressure, tilt, hover, and palm rejection are documented Pro features The destination application still has to interpret the delivered pen input Readers who want Duet’s documented professional drawing features
Luna Display iPad, Apple Pencil, Windows PC, and a Luna Display hardware unit Luna hardware connected directly to the PC, with Luna software on the PC and iPad PC display extension to the iPad through the Luna system Windows documentation currently supports PC-to-iPad mode, not every Luna mode available on Mac Readers willing to buy dedicated hardware for a display-extension workflow

Astropad Studio’s Windows requirements include Windows 10 64-bit, a compatible iPadOS device, and a network connection for network-based use. Astropad says Studio is optimized for iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. Duet’s official professional drawing-tablet information distinguishes its drawing-focused Pro features from ordinary second-display use.

How do you use an iPad as a drawing tablet with Astropad Studio?

Astropad Studio mirrors the Windows desktop to the iPad and provides the input bridge for Apple Pencil. Use the following setup sequence.

  1. Install Astropad Studio on the iPad and the required Astropad software on the Windows PC.
  2. Confirm that the PC meets Astropad’s Windows requirements, including Windows 10 64-bit where applicable, and that the iPad is supported.
  3. Connect the iPad to the PC by USB when the supported devices and cables allow it, or use Astropad’s supported network connection.
  4. Open Astropad Studio and select the Windows display or application view that should appear on the iPad.
  5. Open the Windows drawing application and move the canvas or application window onto the iPad display.
  6. Test a brush stroke, pressure response, and any available gestures before beginning a detailed drawing.

Astropad Studio is a strong choice when pressure sensitivity matters and the Windows art application supports Windows Ink. Astropad’s Windows pen-pressure instructions cover enabling Windows Ink and configuring pressure behavior. Supported applications listed in Astropad’s guidance include Blender, Clip Studio Paint, Krita, Drawpile, Toon Boom Harmony, TVPaint, and ZBrush.

Older software can be a decisive exception. Astropad states that older programs such as Photoshop CS6 do not support the Windows Ink API, so pressure sensitivity may not work through Astropad Studio for Windows in those programs.

How do you use an iPad as a drawing tablet with Duet Display?

Duet uses the iPad as a touchscreen display for the Windows PC, and Duet documents a workflow in which the desktop app detects an iPad connected with its charging cable. Install Duet on both devices, connect the iPad by a suitable cable, and open the Windows drawing application on the resulting display.

  1. Install the Duet iPad app and the Duet desktop application for Windows.
  2. Connect the iPad to the PC using a data-capable cable that matches the connectors on both devices.
  3. Allow the iPad and Windows software to recognize the connection.
  4. Choose whether to mirror the Windows display or use the iPad as an extended display, if the current Duet configuration provides that choice.
  5. Open the drawing program and test Apple Pencil input on a blank canvas.

The ordinary Duet Display workflow and Duet Pro should not be treated as identical. Duet describes Duet Display’s PC and Mac touchscreen-display workflow, while Duet Pro is the relevant tier for documented professional drawing features including Apple Pencil pressure, tilt, hover, and palm rejection. Confirm the current subscription tier and supported devices before relying on a particular feature.

Duet is a practical choice when you want a wired-first setup or want the iPad to serve as both a second display and a drawing surface. A Duet Display for Windows setup does not remove the need to configure the destination art application correctly.

How do you use Luna Display with a Windows PC?

Luna Display requires a dedicated Luna hardware unit as well as software on the Windows PC and iPad. Plug the Luna unit directly into the PC, install the required Luna software, and connect the iPad through the supported Luna connection process.

  1. Plug the Luna Display unit directly into the Windows PC.
  2. Install or update the Luna software on the PC and iPad.
  3. Use the Luna application to connect the iPad to the PC.
  4. Place the Windows drawing application on the iPad display and test Apple Pencil input.

Astropad’s Luna Display Windows setup documentation describes the required hardware-and-software arrangement. Luna’s Windows feature scope is narrower than a general description of Luna might suggest: Astropad’s Windows connection-mode documentation states, “At this time, Luna Display for Windows only supports PC-to-iPad mode.” Therefore, choose Luna for extending a Windows PC screen to an iPad, not on the assumption that every Luna mode available on Mac also works on Windows.

Luna Display is the dedicated-hardware option. Readers considering Luna Display for Windows should verify current hardware compatibility and connection requirements before buying.

  • TRANSFORMS IPAD INTO A CANVAS — Draw, sketch, color, take notes, and mark up documents. And for pros, use Apple Pencil hover on iPad Pro and iPad Air (M2) to preview your mark before you make it.

Should you connect the iPad by USB or Wi-Fi?

Start with USB when you want to reduce wireless-network variables; use Wi-Fi or another supported network method when convenience and a cable-free desk matter more. No single connection choice guarantees the same latency or reliability on every PC, router, iPad, and drawing application.

Connection Advantages Trade-offs Good first use
USB Removes many wireless-network variables and is documented by Astropad and Duet Requires a suitable data cable and compatible connectors; the iPad remains physically attached Initial setup and pressure or responsiveness troubleshooting
Wi-Fi or supported network connection More convenient and avoids a cable across the desk Behavior depends on the network, router, PC, iPad, and application; network problems can complicate diagnosis A stable desk setup after the wired workflow works

Use a USB data cable for the iPad and PC that matches the iPad and PC connectors. A cable described only as a charging cable may not provide the required data connection, so do not assume that every charging cable can carry the display and input data.

How do you get Apple Pencil pressure sensitivity working on a PC?

Apple Pencil pressure sensitivity works only when the Pencil, connection software, and Windows drawing application support the same input path. If the cursor moves but every stroke has the same weight, troubleshoot the three layers separately.

  1. Check the Pencil: Confirm that Apple Pencil is charged, paired with the iPad, and compatible with the exact iPad model.
  2. Check the software tier: Confirm whether the connection app reserves pressure or tilt features for a paid or Pro tier. Duet documents pressure and tilt under Duet Pro.
  3. Check Astropad’s input mode: If using Astropad Studio, enable Windows Ink in the Windows art application when the application supports Windows Ink or a compatible TabletPC setting.
  4. Check Photoshop: Adobe documents separate Windows tablet technologies, Windows Ink and WinTab. In Photoshop, check the tablet or input configuration and configure the brush dynamics to use Pen Pressure in Brush Settings.
  5. Test another supported drawing application: A second application can help show whether the problem is in the connection layer or in the original art program. This is a practical diagnostic step, not a claim that every application is universally supported.

For Photoshop users, Adobe’s Photoshop tablet-support documentation explains that Windows tablet behavior depends on Windows Ink or WinTab support and that brush settings must be configured for pen pressure. The connection app cannot force pressure into a Windows program that does not support the input API it exposes.

In Astropad Studio, pressure sensitivity may fail in older applications that lack Windows Ink support. In Duet, pressure and tilt may require Duet Pro. In every route, a compatible Apple Pencil is necessary but not sufficient.

What should you do if the iPad works but drawing does not?

When the iPad shows the Windows desktop but drawing input fails, isolate the failure in this order: Pencil pairing, connection mode, software tier, application input API, and brush settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The iPad is blank: Check that the Windows companion software is running, the iPad app is open, and the selected USB or network connection is supported.
  • The cursor moves but pressure is absent: Check Pencil compatibility and charge, then check Windows Ink, WinTab, or the application’s tablet setting.
  • Pressure works in one app but not another: The applications may expose different tablet APIs or brush controls. Configure the second application separately.
  • Duet displays the iPad but lacks drawing features: Check whether the current Duet plan is Duet Pro and whether the feature is supported on the current devices.
  • Luna connects but a desired mode is unavailable: Windows Luna documentation currently describes PC-to-iPad mode, so do not expect every Mac connection mode.
  • Wireless behavior is inconsistent: Test the same setup over USB where supported to remove network variables from the diagnosis.

Which setup is best for your drawing workflow?

Astropad Studio is the best starting point for artists who want documented Windows Ink pressure controls and a drawing-focused interface. Duet Pro is the better fit for readers who prioritize a straightforward wired-first display workflow with documented pressure, tilt, hover, and palm-rejection features. Luna Display suits readers who prefer dedicated hardware and PC-to-iPad display extension.

Equipment checklist for a comfortable setup

  • Compatible Apple Pencil: Choose the Apple Pencil for your iPad model, rather than choosing by Pencil generation alone.
  • Connection software: Select Astropad Studio, Duet Display or Duet Pro, or Luna Display according to the workflow comparison above.
  • Data-capable cable: A suitable USB-C data cable can simplify initial setup when the iPad and PC support USB connection. Match the cable to the actual connectors.
  • Stable drawing support: An adjustable iPad stand for drawing is optional, but it can help maintain a consistent drawing angle during longer sessions. A stand is an ergonomic accessory, not a technical requirement.
  • Compatible art application: Confirm that the Windows program supports the input API exposed by the chosen connection software. Photoshop users should review Windows Ink or WinTab and brush pressure settings.

What is the final recommendation?

For most Windows artists, begin with a compatible Apple Pencil and a USB connection, then choose Astropad Studio or Duet according to the art application and pressure workflow. Choose Luna Display only if its dedicated hardware and current PC-to-iPad Windows mode match your needs. Test pressure in the exact Windows drawing application before committing to a long session or a software subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Apple Pencil connect directly to a Windows PC?

No. Pairing Apple Pencil with the iPad does not by itself turn the iPad into a Windows drawing tablet. You need a connection layer such as Astropad Studio or Duet, or a hardware-and-software system such as Luna Display, to send the Windows display and Pencil input between the devices.

Can I draw in Photoshop on Windows with an iPad?

Yes, Photoshop on Windows can receive drawing input through an iPad connection setup when the connection software and Photoshop use a compatible tablet-input path. Adobe documents Windows Ink and WinTab as separate technologies, and Photoshop brush dynamics must be configured to use Pen Pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is USB better than Wi-Fi for using an iPad as a drawing tablet?

USB is usually the best first troubleshooting connection because USB removes wireless-network variables. Wi-Fi can be more convenient, but performance and reliability depend on the specific PC, iPad, network, router, and application.

Do I need Luna Display hardware to use an iPad with a Windows PC?

Luna Display requires a dedicated Luna hardware unit in addition to software on the Windows PC and iPad. On Windows, Astropad currently documents PC-to-iPad mode, so Luna should not be selected on the assumption that every Mac mode is available.

The Bottom Line

An iPad can be a practical drawing tablet for a Windows PC, but it needs Astropad Studio, Duet, or Luna Display to bridge the iPad and Windows. Match the Apple Pencil to the exact iPad model, start with USB when possible, and configure Windows Ink, WinTab, or brush pressure settings in the drawing application.
