A new 3D analysis of the Shroud of Turin image found that cloth contacting a low-relief form matched the image geometry more closely than cloth draped over a fully three-dimensional human body. The result challenges a simple body-contact explanation, but it does not prove that the Shroud was made from a sculpture or settle whether it is Jesus’ burial cloth.
The paper is a model-based geometric argument, not a complete forensic examination. Its result must be considered alongside the official rebuttal, the reported physical and chemical evidence, the Shroud’s disputed history, and the 1989 radiocarbon dating that placed the linen in the medieval period.
Key takeaways
- A peer-reviewed paper published in Archaeometry on July 28, 2025, found that a low-relief digital form produced a closer geometric match to the Shroud image than a fully three-dimensional human body model.
- The study modeled cloth contact and image geometry; it did not examine the Shroud’s fibers, pigments, blood chemistry, image chemistry, manufacturing date, or historical provenance.
- The result does not prove that a sculpture created the Shroud image, that the image depicts no human body, or that the Shroud is inauthentic.
- An August 4, 2025, statement from the Pontifical Custodian and the International Centre for Studies on the Shroud in Turin said the orthogonal-projection observation was already known and argued that geometry alone cannot explain the artifact’s reported material properties.
- The original 1989 Nature radiocarbon report dated the linen to AD 1260–1390 at a minimum 95% confidence, although sampling and contamination arguments remain contested.
- A 2026 textile-fragment study found no repair signs or significant dating-interfering contaminants in the examined archived fragments, while cautioning that the small subset might not represent the entire Shroud.
What did the new 3D analysis of the Shroud of Turin find?
The new 3D analysis found that a simulated cloth contacting a low-relief form matched the Shroud’s image geometry more closely than cloth draped over a fully three-dimensional human body. The finding comes from a digital comparison, not from a new physical, chemical, or historical examination of the artifact.

Brazilian 3D digital designer Cicero Moraes created two digital models: one representing a volumetric human body and another representing a low-relief body form. He then simulated cloth contact and compared the resulting patterns with photographs of the Shroud. The peer-reviewed paper’s publisher record identifies the study and its publication date.

The comparison addressed a specific visual problem: when a flat cloth contacts a fully three-dimensional face or body, the cloth can produce lateral widening and other distortions. A low-relief form presents less depth, so the projected image can remain flatter. Live Science’s report on the modeling study described this distortion as the “Agamemnon Mask” effect, an analogy for the widening that can occur when a volumetric face is transferred to a flat surface.
Moraes told Live Science: “The image on the Shroud of Turin is more consistent with a low-relief matrix.” That sentence accurately describes the study’s central interpretation, but “more consistent” means a better fit within the tested geometric models. It does not mean that the researchers demonstrated that a historical sculptor used a low-relief object.
Why does a low-relief form change the image geometry?
A low-relief form changes the geometry because the form has substantially less depth than a complete human body, reducing the amount of sideways stretching required when cloth contacts the modeled surface.
A cloth laid over a face, nose, chest, and limbs must bridge different depths. On a fully three-dimensional body, the cloth’s contact pattern can broaden facial features and alter the relative positions of body features on the fabric. A low-relief matrix can produce an image closer to an orthogonal or relatively direct projection, with less of that lateral distortion.
The distinction is important for visual analysis and for painting history, but it is not a complete image-making explanation. The model can compare the shapes produced by two forms without establishing how the real Shroud image was formed at the fibril level, what materials were involved, or whether the modeled cloth behaved like the historical textile in every relevant respect.
| Tested model | Cloth-contact geometry | Reported comparison with the Shroud image | What the result means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fully three-dimensional human body | Cloth contacts a volumetric body and can create lateral distortion and widening. | The simulated image was a less close geometric match in the study. | The model presents a geometric difficulty for a simple full-body draping explanation. |
| Low-relief body form | Cloth contacts a shallower form and produces a flatter projection with less lateral distortion. | The simulated image was a closer geometric match in the study. | The low-relief hypothesis fits the tested image proportions better, but the study does not show that such a form created the artifact. |
Does the simulation prove that the Shroud was made from a sculpture?
No. The simulation supports a low-relief geometric hypothesis, but it does not prove that the Shroud was made from a sculpture or even establish that a sculpted object was used.

The paper primarily tests whether one modeled shape produces a closer image geometry than another. The paper does not establish the material of a proposed matrix, the substance transferred to the linen, the process that created the visible image, the date of manufacture, or the identity of the person represented.

A digital model can show that a low-relief form produces a promising geometric comparison; a physical explanation must additionally account for the textile’s reported chemical and microscopic properties.
That distinction also separates a low-relief hypothesis from ordinary painting. The existence of a geometric match does not demonstrate that the image was painted, rubbed from a relief, transferred with a heated statue, or produced by any other specific artistic technique.
Why did official Shroud organizations challenge the conclusion?
The official response challenged the study’s novelty and its move from geometric similarity to a proposed physical origin.
On August 4, 2025, the Pontifical Custodian of the Shroud and the International Centre for Studies on the Shroud in Turin issued an official response. The statement said that the observation that the image resembles an orthogonal projection rather than a distorted imprint from a full body was already present in early studies by Paul Vignon and Yves Delage. The statement summarized its view with the words: “There is nothing new in this conclusion.” The official CISS and Pontifical Custodian response provides the institution’s full argument.

The CISS response did not mainly dispute that different three-dimensional shapes can produce different projected geometries. Instead, it argued that a viable explanation must also fit the Shroud’s reported material evidence. The statement pointed to earlier STURP work and later chemical-physical analyses that, in its account, ruled out painting, rubbing with a bas-relief, and contact with a heated statue or bas-relief as explanations for the image.

The disagreement is therefore methodological. Moraes’s work offers a modern digital comparison that favors a low-relief form on one geometric axis. The institutional critics argue that geometry cannot by itself override the reported chemistry, superficiality of the image, blood-related claims, textile evidence, and other physical observations. Neither position, standing alone, demonstrates the complete historical image-making process.
What does the Shroud’s physical and historical context add?
The Shroud is a rectangular linen textile bearing frontal and dorsal images of a male figure, and its documented history raises questions that a 3D simulation does not answer.
A 2026 analysis in npj Heritage Science gives the main textile’s dimensions as approximately 4.30 meters by 1.08 meters and notes an attached seam. The same study examined archived fragments connected with the 1988 radiocarbon sample. Its textile-fragment analysis is relevant to the dating debate, but it does not turn the recent geometric simulation into a physical reproduction.
The first well-documented display in the current historical record occurred at Lirey in the French Alps around 1355 CE. The cloth survived a fire in 1532 and was later repaired with patches and attached to a supporting backing cloth. A first well-documented European display around 1355 is not the same claim as saying that the Shroud necessarily originated at Lirey or that the earlier history has been conclusively disproved. The artifact’s pre-1355 history remains disputed and incomplete.
These facts create separate tests for competing explanations. A medieval-art hypothesis must explain how an image was made on linen and why the image has its reported physical characteristics. A genuine-burial-cloth hypothesis must explain the cloth’s documented emergence, dating evidence, image formation, and the same physical characteristics. The digital study addresses only part of the first question.
What does radiocarbon dating say about the Shroud?
The original radiocarbon dating report published in Nature in 1989 dated the Shroud linen to AD 1260–1390 at a minimum 95% confidence.

Accelerator-mass-spectrometry laboratories at the University of Arizona, the University of Oxford, and ETH Zurich analyzed Shroud samples, with the British Museum involved in the report. The abstract by Damon and colleagues stated: “The results provide conclusive evidence that the linen of the Shroud of Turin is mediaeval.” The 1989 Nature radiocarbon report is the primary source for that result.

The AD 1260–1390 result is broadly compatible with a medieval-art hypothesis, but the 3D study did not date the cloth and cannot independently confirm or overturn radiocarbon measurements. Critics of the original dating have challenged whether the tested area represented the whole Shroud, whether contamination was adequately accounted for, and whether the measurements were treated correctly statistically.
A 2026 npj Heritage Science paper examined archived fragments from the Arizona allocation of the 1988 sample. The authors reported that the examined fragments showed no signs of repair and no significant contaminants that would have interfered with radiocarbon dating. The authors also cautioned that the examined pieces were a small subset and might not represent every part of the Shroud.
The most balanced conclusion is that the 1989 radiocarbon result remains the principal mainstream dating evidence, while the wider sampling and contamination debate has not disappeared. The 3D modeling paper does not resolve that dating dispute.
How do the competing Shroud explanations compare?
The low-relief or medieval-art hypothesis and the genuine-burial-cloth hypothesis must be evaluated against the whole evidentiary record, not only against the shape of the face in a cloth simulation.
| Evidence axis | Low-relief or medieval-art hypothesis | Genuine-burial-cloth hypothesis | Status after the 3D study |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geometry | The study reports that a low-relief form creates a closer image geometry with less distortion. | A full-body draping process must explain the reported proportions without implausible lateral distortion. | The new model favors low relief on the tested geometric comparison, but geometry is not the whole case. |
| Materials | The hypothesis must identify a workable image-making substance and process that fit the reported linen evidence. | The hypothesis must explain how a body-contact event produced the reported image without an established artistic medium. | The study did not test pigments, dyes, binders, image chemistry, fibril oxidation, or thermal effects. |
| Blood and wound marks | The hypothesis must explain marks interpreted as blood and their relationship to the body image. | The hypothesis must explain the same marks as consequences of an actual burial or body-contact event. | The 3D comparison does not decide whether the marks are blood, how they formed, or how they relate to the image. |
| Dating | A medieval origin is compatible with the published AD 1260–1390 radiocarbon result. | An authentic ancient burial cloth must be reconciled with the 1989 radiocarbon result and with challenges to that result. | The digital study performed no independent dating. |
| Historical provenance | A medieval-art explanation can be considered alongside the first well-documented display around 1355 CE. | An authentic burial-cloth explanation requires a credible history before the documented European display. | The earlier history remains disputed and incomplete; the simulation adds no provenance evidence. |
| Reproducibility | A persuasive account would require a physical demonstration of the complete proposed process, not only a digital shape comparison. | A persuasive account would require a reproducible explanation of the image and textile evidence from a real body-contact process. | The paper provides a model-based comparison, not a complete physical reproduction. |
| Scope | The model addresses one visual feature: the relationship between cloth and body-form geometry. | The explanation must address geometry, materials, marks, dating, provenance, and the artifact’s complete physical record. | The study primarily addresses geometry, so it cannot settle authenticity by itself. |
Did the new analysis disprove that the Shroud wrapped a real body?
No. The new analysis makes a low-relief model more geometrically attractive within its simulation, but it does not disprove that the Shroud contacted a real body.

To disprove a genuine-body explanation, researchers would need to show that every physically plausible body-contact process fails while a documented alternative process succeeds. The Moraes study does neither. The study compares digital forms and resulting image patterns; it does not reproduce the complete material conditions of the historical textile.
The study also does not identify the figure as Jesus or exclude that identity. Whether the Shroud is Jesus’ burial cloth is a historical and religious claim that depends on dating, provenance, textile analysis, image formation, and interpretation of the marks. The new geometric result cannot answer the identity question on its own.
What does the study actually change?
The study changes the discussion by giving the low-relief interpretation a modern digital modeling treatment, while leaving the central authenticity question open.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore accepting the headline conclusion, readers should separate three statements:
- Geometric observation: In Moraes’s simulations, cloth contacting a low-relief form produced a closer match to the Shroud image geometry than cloth contacting a fully three-dimensional body.
- Physical hypothesis: A low-relief object might therefore be a better candidate for explaining the image’s shape than a simple full-body drape.
- Historical conclusion: The Shroud was made from a sculpture, or the Shroud is not Jesus’ burial cloth.
The paper supports the first statement and argues for the second. The paper does not establish the third.
The official response adds another qualification: even if the geometric observation is correct, the observation may not be new, and a complete explanation must account for the reported physical and chemical properties of the image. That is why the strongest defensible summary is not “the Shroud has been proven to be a disguised sculpture.” The strongest defensible summary is that a digital cloth simulation found better geometric compatibility with a low-relief form than with a fully three-dimensional body.
How should readers evaluate the sculpture claim?
Readers can evaluate the claim by asking whether each proposed explanation addresses the same set of evidence.
- Identify the tested feature. Ask whether a source is discussing image geometry, chemical composition, blood marks, radiocarbon dating, or historical provenance. The 2025 paper primarily addresses geometry.
- Separate a model from an event. A simulation can show what a modeled cloth might look like. It cannot show that the real cloth experienced that process unless the physical assumptions are independently demonstrated.
- Check the dating evidence separately. The AD 1260–1390 radiocarbon result remains important even though critics dispute the sample’s representativeness and contamination assumptions.
- Ask what the proposed process leaves on linen. Any artwork or sculpture-transfer theory must explain the reported image chemistry and superficiality, not only the apparent proportions.
- Demand a whole-record explanation. A strong hypothesis must address geometry, materials, marks interpreted as blood, dating, provenance, and reproducibility together.
Readers who want the historical, scientific, and theological background should look for a Shroud of Turin book that distinguishes those evidence categories rather than treating one new simulation as a final verdict. A book on the Shroud of Turin’s history and science can provide useful context, but no general recommendation should be presented as proof of either authenticity or fabrication.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 2025 3D study found that a low-relief form matched the Shroud of Turin image geometry better than a fully three-dimensional body in a digital cloth simulation. That is a meaningful geometric result, not proof that a sculpture made the Shroud, not a chemical analysis of the linen, and not a final ruling on whether the cloth is Jesus’ burial garment.
