To make edible paper at home, mix 1 tablespoon brown rice flour, 1 tablespoon potato starch, and about 1.5 tablespoons water; spread the paste thinly on a microwave-safe setup; then microwave it for about 45 seconds, watching until dry. Cool the sheet before peeling, decorating, cutting, or eating it.
This is a small educational food-science project rather than a validated commercial food-manufacturing method. The process is simple, but even thickness, microwave timing, clean handling, and realistic expectations determine whether the sheet is flexible or brittle.

What is edible paper made of?
Edible paper is a thin sheet made from food ingredients that dry or cook into a flexible, paper-like layer. This beginner method uses brown rice flour, potato starch, and water; optional edible food coloring or an edible food-color marker can add decoration. The finished sheet is suitable for simple food projects, but it should not be treated as ordinary writing paper or as a commercially validated food package.
According to Science Buddies’ 2020 homemade rice-paper activity, cellulose and starch are both edible, so a sheet made from edible ingredients can be edible too. That statement does not apply to store-bought paper, which may contain coatings, inks, or other chemicals that are not intended to be eaten.

What do you need to make edible paper?
| Ingredient or equipment | Amount or purpose |
|---|---|
| Brown rice flour | 1 tablespoon; contributes the rice-based structure |
| Potato starch | 1 tablespoon; helps the heated paste form a smoother sheet |
| Water | About 1.5 tablespoons; adjust slightly for a pourable paste |
| Small bowl and spoon | Mixing the paste |
| Microwave-safe plate | Supporting the stretched sheet |
| Plastic wrap | Covering the plate and receiving the paste; follow the source’s microwave caution about food touching plastic wrap |
| Microwave | Cooking and drying the thin layer |
| Optional edible food-color marker or food coloring | Writing or adding color after the sheet cools |
Use clean hands, utensils, the plate, and the preparation surface. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s 2024 kitchen-safety guidance recommends following safe food-preparation practices when preparing recipes.
How do you make edible paper at home in 3 easy steps?
Step 1: Mix the edible-paper paste
Stretch plastic wrap tightly over a microwave-safe plate. In a small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon brown rice flour, 1 tablespoon potato starch, and about 1.5 tablespoons water. Stir until the paste is smooth and resembles school glue.
The mixture should be pourable rather than dough-like. If the paste is too stiff to spread, add a small amount of water at a time and mix again. Avoid adding a large amount of water all at once because a very thin mixture can be difficult to spread evenly.
Step 2: Spread the paste into a thin sheet
Pour the paste onto the plastic wrap and spread it into a very thin, even layer with the back of a spoon. You can also gently tilt the plate to help the paste flow. An even thickness matters more than creating a perfect circle: thick areas may remain wet while very thin areas can become fragile.
Step 3: Microwave the sheet and let it cool
Microwave the plate on high for about 45 seconds, checking the sheet as it heats. Science Buddies’ 2020 recipe uses approximately 45 seconds, but that is a starting point rather than a universal setting. Microwave power, paste thickness, and moisture affect the result.
The edible paper is ready when it looks dry. If the center is still wet, microwave it in short additional intervals and watch closely. Let the sheet cool completely before peeling it away from the covering, cutting it, writing on it, or eating it.

Why does the rice-flour and potato-starch recipe work?
Brown rice flour contributes insoluble cellulose fiber, which helps give the sheet flexibility, strength, and a paper-like structure. Potato starch contains starch rather than fiber; when starch is heated with liquid, the starch granules swell and form a network that contributes smoothness and resilience.
The combination balances two different properties: rice flour helps provide structure, while potato starch helps the cooked sheet feel smoother and hold together. The explanation is supported by Science Buddies’ 2020 discussion of edible rice paper. A homemade microwave sheet may resemble a rice-paper wrapper, but the recipe does not establish that every batch will behave like commercial Vietnamese rice paper.
Can you make edible paper in the microwave?
Yes, this small-batch method uses a microwave to dry the thin rice-flour and potato-starch layer. Start with about 45 seconds on high, inspect the sheet, and use short additional intervals only if the sheet remains wet.
Microwave the sheet cautiously. The documented method includes a caution about food touching plastic wrap during heating. Plastic wrap can vary by product and intended use, so use a food-contact setup that is appropriate for the particular wrap, microwave, and recipe rather than assuming every plastic wrap is suitable. This activity has not been established as a validated large-batch, long-term-storage, or commercial process.

How do you fix common edible-paper problems?
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Paste is too thick | Not enough water | Add water a little at a time until the mixture is smooth and pourable. |
| Sheet is uneven | Paste was not spread consistently | Use the spoon more carefully or gently tilt the plate before microwaving. |
| Sheet is still wet | The layer is thick or the microwave needs more time | Use short additional microwave intervals and monitor the sheet closely. |
| Sheet is brittle | The layer may be too thin or dried too aggressively | Try a slightly thicker, more even layer and avoid excessive heating. |
| Sheet dries while you are waiting | Edible paper loses moisture quickly | For a short interruption, keep the sheet in a zip-top bag; this is a practical handling tip, not a validated storage-life recommendation. |
| Writing bleeds | The surface may not suit the marker | Test an edible food-color marker on a cooled scrap before decorating the finished sheet. |
Do not interpret the 45-second instruction as a guaranteed result. A thinner layer may dry sooner, while a thicker or wetter area may need more time. Cooling before handling is also important because the sheet can be fragile while warm.
How should you handle edible paper and fillings safely?
Keep the preparation sanitary, and treat the finished sheet as food rather than craft material. Wash your hands, clean the utensils and plate, and use a clean preparation surface. Avoid placing the sheet on surfaces that have contacted non-food craft supplies, ordinary markers, paint, glue, or unclean tools.

If you use the edible paper with cut fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat, or another perishable filling, the filling still requires normal food-safety handling. FoodSafety.gov’s 2025 fruit-and-vegetable guidance says to wash hands, utensils, and preparation surfaces before and after preparing produce. The same guidance says not to wash produce with soap, bleach, sanitizer, alcohol, disinfectant, or other chemicals.
Perishable prepared fillings are not made shelf-stable by wrapping them in edible paper. FoodSafety.gov advises refrigerating cut, peeled, or cooked fruits and vegetables within two hours, or within one hour when temperatures exceed 90°F. Follow the applicable food-safety guidance for every filling and do not rely on homemade edible paper as a preservation barrier.

Homemade edible paper can be used for simple spring-roll-style food projects, cake decoration, candy wrappers, edible writing, and related experiments. Let the sheet cool before cutting or decorating, and test its strength with the intended food before committing to a large design.
For cake decoration, an edible food-color marker can be useful, but marker performance depends on the cooled surface. Test a small scrap first. The homemade sheet is not automatically compatible with every edible printer, ink system, filling, or decorating technique; printer compatibility requires separate product-specific verification.
Traditional rice paper provides useful culinary context. A 2022 scholarly article available through PMC describes traditional rice paper as a thin rice-flour batter with a small amount of tapioca starch that is cooked, cooled, and sun-dried. That connection explains why thin starch-based sheets are used as wrappers, but it does not prove that this microwave recipe will have the same strength, texture, or handling properties as Vietnamese rice-paper wrappers.

What should you remember about homemade edible paper?
The reliable beginner formula is 1 tablespoon brown rice flour, 1 tablespoon potato starch, and about 1.5 tablespoons water. Mix the ingredients into a smooth paste, spread the paste thinly and evenly, then microwave it for about 45 seconds while watching for dryness. Cool the sheet before handling, keep food preparation sanitary, and use commercial wafer paper when consistent decorating or printing performance is more important than the experiment.
