The movement’s central story is that only 3% of American colonists fought the British during the Revolutionary War. Supporters have used that story as a modern analogy: a small but committed group, they argue, could stand against government tyranny or resist efforts to restrict firearms.
Historians and monitoring organizations do not treat the three-percent claim as a reliable account of Revolutionary War participation. The Anti-Defamation League has described it as a false belief, while the Southern Poverty Law Center has characterized the claim as unproven. Participation in the Revolution was considerably more complicated, involving Patriots, Loyalists, neutral colonists, militia members, enlisted troops, financial supporters, and people whose positions changed over time.
The modern Three Percenter concept emerged in 2008 through Sipsey Street Irregulars, a blog operated by Alabama anti-government activist Mike Vanderboegh. Does a 3% tattoo mean the wearer is in a militia?
