Artists Stage Mass Online Protest Against AI-Generated Artwork on ArtStation

In December 2022, ArtStation artists used the platform’s own trending and portfolio system to protest AI-generated artwork. Here is what they demanded, how ArtStation responded, and what the NoAI and opt-out measures could—and could not—do.

In December 2022, artists turned ArtStation’s own portfolio and discovery system into the stage for a mass online protest against AI-generated artwork. The action was not a physical march: artists uploaded a shared anti-AI graphic to their portfolios, and the repeated images rapidly dominated ArtStation’s trending and Explore surfaces.

In December 2022, artists turned ArtStation’s own portfolio and discovery system into the stage for a mass online protest against AI-generated artwork. Rather than gathering in a physical march, artists uploaded a shared anti-AI graphic—usually a red prohibition symbol over the letters “AI,” with wording such as “NO TO AI GENERATED IMAGES”—to their portfolios. The repeated images quickly overwhelmed ArtStation’s trending and Explore surfaces.

The protest was not simply a rejection of every use of artificial intelligence. It focused on four connected disputes: whether AI-generated images belonged in professional portfolio spaces without clear separation, whether artists had consented to their work being used to train image generators, whether generative tools threatened paid creative work, and whether platforms should clearly disclose how an image was made.

What happened on ArtStation?

ArtStation was widely used by artists working in games, film, entertainment, media, and illustration to display portfolios, find professional opportunities, and sell digital products. Protesters argued that placing AI-generated images beside human-made portfolios—and allowing them to compete for attention in the same discovery areas—blurred an important distinction between commissioned or individually authored work and images produced rapidly by a generative system.

The protest developed rapidly:

  • December 5, 2022: Public criticism circulated over generative-AI systems trained on large collections of artists’ and photographers’ work.
  • December 9: Character artist Dan Eder publicly criticized AI-generated artwork appearing on ArtStation’s main page, intensifying the discussion.
  • December 13–14: Artists began uploading “No AI Art” protest graphics in large numbers. By December 14, the images dominated ArtStation’s trending page.
  • December 14–15: Contemporary reporting counted 2,099 ArtStation results for “No AI Art” and 2,111 for “no to AI generated images.” These were snapshots of search results during the peak, not a definitive count of individual participants.
  • December 16: ArtStation announced an opt-out mechanism, a NoAI HTML meta tag, and related terms governing the use of tagged content.
  • February 9, 2023: ArtStation added controls allowing users to hide AI-created work from homepage galleries, search, and marketplaces.

The scale of the upload campaign mattered because it exposed a tension at the heart of a portfolio platform: the same ranking and discovery tools that help artists find work also gave artists a way to make a platform-policy dispute impossible to ignore.

Why did artists object to AI-generated art?

1. ArtStation was a professional portfolio environment

For many artists, ArtStation was not just a general image-sharing site. A portfolio could help demonstrate specialized skills, attract recruiters, support freelance work, and sell digital assets. Protesters therefore objected to AI-generated images appearing in the same prominent galleries and recommendation areas as portfolios built through years of study and professional practice.

The complaint was partly about visibility and context. An artist could spend hundreds of hours developing a body of work, while a generated image could be produced quickly and uploaded in large quantities. If both were presented through the same discovery system without an obvious label or filter, viewers and prospective clients might not know what they were evaluating.

2. Training data raised consent questions

Artists also challenged how image-generation systems were built. Contemporary reporting described systems such as Stable Diffusion as trained on very large collections of images gathered from the internet. Artists argued that their work had been copied or included in training data without individual permission, payment, or a meaningful way to refuse.

That allegation should be stated carefully. The protest established that many artists believed their work had been used without consent; it did not, by itself, prove that every AI-generated image copied an identifiable individual artwork or settle whether every form of model training was unlawful. Copyright law and the legal treatment of generative-AI training were—and remain—separate questions from the artists’ ethical objection.

3. Artists feared professional and economic displacement

Another concern was the effect of inexpensive, rapidly generated images on commissions and employment. Artists worried that clients might replace concept art, illustration, or other paid work with generated alternatives, reducing rates or making it harder for human artists to secure opportunities.

These were forecasts and livelihood concerns, not a verified measurement of job losses caused by the specific ArtStation protest. The event showed the seriousness of the fear among working artists, but it did not establish a precise employment impact.

4. Artists wanted attribution and disclosure

Many protesters wanted platforms to make AI involvement visible. In their view, viewers should be able to distinguish a work made by a person from one generated or materially altered with an AI system, especially in a professional portfolio or marketplace.

This demand later appeared in ArtStation’s policy language through separate concepts: NoAI for a creator’s refusal of certain training uses, and CreatedWithAI for identifying work made with generative AI. Those labels address different problems. NoAI concerns the use of a creator’s content in AI development; CreatedWithAI concerns disclosure about how an uploaded work was made.

How did ArtStation respond?

ArtStation did not ban AI-generated artwork outright. Its December 16 response described an artist-controlled opt-out approach.

The NoAI designation

Creators could apply a NoAI tag to projects. ArtStation said it would add a corresponding HTML meta tag and update its terms to prohibit companies from using NoAI-tagged content to train AI art generators, develop such programs, or use the content as model inputs.

ArtStation also provided an account-level setting for tagging current and future projects. The practical idea was to communicate a creator’s preference in machine-readable form rather than relying only on a human-readable notice attached to an individual image.

However, the policy was not presented as a universal legal ban. ArtStation’s FAQ said that failing to use the NoAI tag did not automatically mean a creator had granted permission, nor did it automatically prohibit AI use. Instead, the platform said that applicable copyright law would govern unless the creator used the NoAI designation. It also acknowledged that the relationship between AI systems and copyright law was unsettled.

Filters for viewers

In February 2023, ArtStation added filtering controls so users could hide AI-created artwork in homepage galleries, search results, and marketplaces. This addressed a different issue from training-data consent. A creator might want to prevent future dataset use, while a viewer, recruiter, or artist might separately want to avoid seeing AI-created work in discovery areas.

Disclosure requirements

ArtStation’s later policy distinguished between NoAI and CreatedWithAI. Digital products made with generative AI were required to carry the CreatedWithAI tag, and ArtStation recommended that creators use the tag for other uploads as well.

That distinction is important: a platform can allow an AI-created image to remain online while still requiring or encouraging disclosure. Conversely, a human-made image can carry a NoAI designation even though it contains no AI-generated elements. The two labels are not interchangeable.

Did the protest remove artists’ work from Stable Diffusion?

No. The protest and the subsequent opt-out tools could not immediately remove artwork already incorporated into existing training datasets or deployed models. If an image had already been used in the training of a model, adding a protest graphic to ArtStation or opting out later did not automatically retrain or reverse that model.

This is the central limitation of a prospective opt-out system:

Situation What the policy could address What it could not guarantee
Artwork already included in an existing model Nothing immediate; the model had already been trained Removal from or alteration of a deployed model
Artwork collected for a future dataset by a participating organization An opt-out request could tell that organization not to use it in future training Compliance by every developer, dataset, or model
Content hosted on ArtStation ArtStation’s contractual commitments and machine-readable NoAI signaling A universal legal prohibition applying outside ArtStation
AI-created work displayed on ArtStation Labels and viewer filters An outright end to AI-generated uploads on the platform

What did Spawning’s opt-out effort cover?

On March 7, 2023, Spawning said that opt-out requests associated with ArtStation and other partners covered 78 million artworks—described in some contemporary reports as approximately 80 million. Spawning said it had partnered with ArtStation so opt-out requests could be honored through its API and that participating organizations would not use opted-out works for future model training.

The scope needs qualification. The figure referred to participating organizations and future training. It did not mean that every AI company accepted the requests, that every dataset was searched, or that already-trained models were changed. Artists investigating this route should treat it as an opt-out and dataset-identification mechanism with organization-dependent coverage, not as a retroactive eraser for the internet or for deployed AI models.

What did ArtStation commit to in its own terms?

ArtStation’s current terms, as described in the available policy material, go further regarding Epic’s own conduct: Epic says it will not use or license ArtStation content, whether or not that content is marked NoAI, for datasets used by generative-AI programs, for development of those programs, or as inputs to them.

That commitment should not be confused with a promise that no outside party has ever copied an image, or that every AI developer honors ArtStation’s preferences. The terms also preserve ArtStation’s ability to use AI and machine learning for safety, search, recommendations, and discovery. Those platform functions are distinguished from using the content to train a generative-AI image program.

What did the protest accomplish?

The protest did not end AI-generated art on ArtStation and did not resolve whether training models on copyrighted artwork is lawful. It also did not retroactively remove images from existing AI models.

It did, however, produce a visible policy response and sharpen the terms of the dispute. The aftermath connected three demands that are often treated separately:

  1. Separation: Keep AI-generated work out of human-oriented discovery areas, or give users meaningful ways to filter it.
  2. Disclosure: Clearly identify when a work was generated or materially produced with AI.
  3. Consent: Give creators a way to refuse future use of their work in AI training, with machine-readable signals and participation from relevant organizations.

That makes the ArtStation action significant beyond its search-result numbers. Artists used a platform’s own infrastructure to challenge the platform’s decisions about visibility, professional identity, and content governance. The lasting result was procedural rather than final: tags, filters, contractual commitments, and opt-out infrastructure instead of a definitive answer to the larger copyright and consent controversy.

What the protest did—and did not—prove

  • It demonstrated substantial, highly visible opposition among participating ArtStation artists in December 2022.
  • It showed that portfolio platforms face a conflict between hosting AI-generated work and protecting a human-centered professional discovery environment.
  • It documented strong artist concerns about training-data consent and economic displacement.
  • It led to concrete ArtStation changes involving NoAI tags, CreatedWithAI disclosure, and filters.
  • It did not prove that every generated image reproduces a particular artist’s work.
  • It did not establish that all AI training on online artwork is illegal.
  • It did not remove existing artwork from already-trained models.
  • It did not ensure that every AI developer or dataset would honor an opt-out request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was the ArtStation protest a physical demonstration?

No. The action was primarily an online platform protest. Artists uploaded a shared “No AI Art” graphic to their ArtStation portfolios, causing similar images to dominate trending and Explore surfaces in December 2022.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Did the protest remove artists’ work from Stable Diffusion?

No. Later opt-out mechanisms were prospective and depended on participating organizations. They could not automatically remove artwork already incorporated into existing training datasets or deployed models.

What is the difference between NoAI and CreatedWithAI on ArtStation?

NoAI concerns whether content should be used for certain AI-training purposes. CreatedWithAI identifies work made with generative AI. A human-made work can carry NoAI, while an AI-created work can require or be recommended to carry CreatedWithAI; the labels address different issues.

Did the ArtStation protest end the AI-art controversy?

The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion: the protest helped prompt policy and visibility changes, including tags, filters, and opt-out infrastructure. It did not settle the copyright status of AI training or end AI-generated artwork on ArtStation.

The Bottom Line

The ArtStation protest was an early mass online action over platform governance, consent, professional visibility, and AI disclosure. Its practical legacy was a set of labels, filters, contractual promises, and prospective opt-out tools—not a ban on AI art or a retroactive fix for training data already used in existing models.
