Classify This Robot-Woven Sneaker With 3D-Printed Soles as “Footware”

The robot-woven, digitally engineered object is still footwear: specifically a performance running sneaker. Here is how adidas STRUNG, robotic thread placement, Futurecraft 3D, and adidas 4D fit together—and why “Footware” is only a pun.

It is footwear—specifically a performance running sneaker. “Footware” is the title’s intentional pun, while the unusual parts are the robotically placed STRUNG textile upper and adidas 4D lattice midsole.

It is footwear—more specifically, athletic footwear: a performance running sneaker. “Footware” is the title’s intentional pun, not the standard category name. The shoe combines a robotically produced textile upper called STRUNG with adidas 4D lattice-midsole technology and a rubber outsole. Its unusual manufacturing process makes it technologically interesting, but it does not turn the finished object into a robot, a 3D printer, or textile machinery.

What “Footware” means here

“Footware” is a playful spelling of footwear, the ordinary category for shoes and boots worn on the feet. A sneaker remains footwear regardless of whether its upper is sewn, knitted, woven, bonded, or produced by a robot.

The narrower and more useful classification is:

  • Primary category: footwear
  • Narrow category: athletic footwear
  • Product type: performance running shoe or running sneaker
  • Technology descriptors: robotic thread placement, data-coded textile upper, athlete-data-driven design, and digitally produced lattice midsole

So the most accurate plain-English description is a robot-produced performance running sneaker with a digitally manufactured lattice midsole.

What adidas FUTURECRAFT.STRUNG actually was

adidas introduced FUTURECRAFT.STRUNG in October 2020 as an experimental running-shoe concept and development platform. The defining idea was to use athlete movement data to determine how individual yarns should be placed in the upper. Instead of treating the upper as a generic piece of fabric, adidas designed its thread layout as a coded structure: different directions and densities could provide support, flexibility, or other intended characteristics in particular areas.

That distinction matters. The original FUTURECRAFT.STRUNG announcement was not the launch of an ordinary mass-market shoe. adidas described continuing development and athlete testing, with a commercial STRUNG shoe targeted for late 2021 or early 2022. Claims that the 2020 concept itself was widely available would therefore be misleading.

How the robot-made upper works

adidas developed software and hardware to place yarns in programmed directions. IEEE Spectrum reported that the system could place approximately 2,000 threads using as many as 10 types of yarn. The result was intended to be a lightweight, supportive upper whose construction could be adjusted using data from an athlete’s movement.

Calling this process “robotic weaving” is understandable, but it is not the most precise description. adidas said STRUNG was neither conventional knitting nor conventional weaving. It is better described as robotic thread placement or a data-mapped textile upper: software directs machinery to position individual threads according to a planned structure.

The robot is therefore a manufacturing tool, not the product being classified. The consumer-facing object is still a shoe.

Where the “3D-printed soles” description comes from

The title’s reference to 3D-printed soles is directionally related to adidas’s Futurecraft work, but it compresses several different technologies into one phrase.

Futurecraft 3D

adidas’s earlier Futurecraft 3D project involved a 3D-printed running-shoe midsole. That technology is the clearest match for the phrase “3D-printed sole,” although “midsole” is more technically accurate than “sole.” The midsole is the cushioning and structural layer between the foot and the outsole; the outsole is the part that normally contacts the ground.

adidas 4D

FUTURECRAFT.STRUNG paired the engineered upper with adidas 4D technology. The 4D midsole uses a lattice structure produced through Digital Light Synthesis, a process involving light and oxygen to form the material layer by layer. It is related to additive manufacturing, but adidas distinguished it from ordinary 3D printing.

That means the careful wording is:

  • Use 3D-printed midsole when discussing the original Futurecraft 3D technology.
  • Use digitally produced, additively manufactured, or 4D lattice midsole for the STRUNG-and-4D combination.
  • Avoid implying that every STRUNG model has an identical 3D-printed sole or that “3D-printed” describes the entire shoe.

How the shoe is assembled as a product

The original concept combined three important elements:

  1. STRUNG upper: individually placed yarns arranged according to software and athlete data.
  2. adidas 4D midsole: a lattice-style cushioning and structural component created through Digital Light Synthesis.
  3. Rubber outsole: the traction-focused layer designed for contact with the running surface.

The interesting engineering story is the integration of those parts. Robotics changes how the textile upper can be formed, while additive manufacturing changes how the midsole’s internal geometry can be designed. Together, they produce a familiar consumer object—a running shoe—through less conventional manufacturing methods.

Did STRUNG become a real product?

Yes. In September 2022, adidas announced the ADIZERO Prime X Strung as the first commercial availability of STRUNG. The upper was described as being coded thread by thread and was incorporated into a performance running-shoe platform.

STRUNG also remains a current adidas product designation. adidas’s U.S. listings include STRUNG-branded running models such as the Adizero Prime X2 Strung and Adizero Prime X3 Strung. Model names, prices, sizing, colorways, and stock can change, so a current listing should be checked before treating any particular version as available in a specific country.

If you are looking for the closest commercial equivalent to the object described by the title, search for adidas STRUNG running shoes or the current Adizero Prime X Strung models. The original FUTURECRAFT.STRUNG concept and later retail shoes are related, but they should not automatically be treated as identical products.

Does robot production make the shoe better?

Not automatically. The technology gives designers more control over thread direction, density, material selection, and midsole geometry. Those capabilities may support a more targeted design, reduce unnecessary material in some areas, or help connect construction choices to athlete data.

But manufacturing sophistication is not independent proof that a shoe is faster, safer, more comfortable, more durable, or better for every runner. The available descriptions explain adidas’s design goals and engineering methods; they do not establish universal performance results. A runner still needs to consider fit, intended use, cushioning preference, stability, running experience, and the model’s specific construction.

What category it is not

Possible label Why it is not the primary classification
Industrial robot A robot helps manufacture the shoe, but the finished object is not a robot.
3D printer Additive manufacturing may be used for a midsole, but the consumer product is not the machine that made it.
Textile machinery Robotic thread placement describes production equipment and method, not the product category.
Replacement sole The shoe may contain a digitally produced midsole, but it is sold and used as a complete running shoe.
Generic wearable technology It is worn on the body, but its specific and more useful classification is athletic footwear.

What to call it in one sentence

For a concise but accurate description, write: “FUTURECRAFT.STRUNG is experimental athletic footwear: a running sneaker with a robotically placed, data-coded textile upper and an adidas 4D lattice midsole.”

For a shorter label, use robot-produced running sneaker, data-coded athletic shoe, or running footwear with a digitally produced lattice midsole. Keep “Footware” as the pun, not as the formal classification.

What about insoles and other add-ons?

Insoles and replacement inserts are separate accessories, not part of the STRUNG manufacturing system. They may be relevant if a runner is adjusting cushioning or fit, but compatibility should be checked for the exact shoe model. An insole should never be presented as required to use a STRUNG shoe, and adding one can change internal volume, heel hold, or the way the shoe feels underfoot.

Likewise, TPU filament, sole-repair materials, and other 3D-printing supplies may interest makers experimenting with digitally designed footwear. They are not components that an owner needs in order to buy, wear, or maintain an adidas STRUNG running shoe.

Final classification

The answer is footwear, with the narrower classification athletic footwear—specifically a performance running sneaker. “Footware” is a deliberate pun. The robotically placed upper and digitally manufactured midsole explain how the shoe is made; they do not change what the object is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a robot-woven sneaker classified as footwear?

It is footwear—more specifically, athletic footwear or a performance running shoe. The robotically placed textile upper and digitally produced midsole describe its construction, not a different consumer category.

Are adidas STRUNG soles actually 3D-printed?

Not exactly. The original Futurecraft 3D work involved a 3D-printed midsole, while adidas 4D uses Digital Light Synthesis to create a lattice midsole. Calling every STRUNG sole “3D-printed” is therefore imprecise.

Can you buy a STRUNG running shoe?

FUTURECRAFT.STRUNG began as an adidas concept introduced in 2020. Commercial STRUNG footwear followed, including the ADIZERO Prime X Strung announced in 2022 and later STRUNG models listed by adidas.

Is “footware” the correct spelling?

No. “Footware” is a playful title spelling. The standard English term for shoes and boots worn on the feet is “footwear.”

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Classify the object as athletic footwear, specifically a robot-produced performance running sneaker. STRUNG describes the data-coded textile upper, while adidas 4D describes the lattice midsole technology. “Footware” is the title’s wordplay, not the standard spelling.
