Short answer: These 42 Photoshop artists use the software for far more than retouching. They combine photographs, masks, layers, color grading, digital painting, lighting effects, 3D elements, and visual storytelling to build images that look impossible but are carefully constructed.
That makes “Photoshop artist” a broad label rather than a precise job title. The work collected here spans surreal compositing, digital drawing, self-portraiture, fantasy illustration, commercial retouching, graphic design, mixed media, and cinematic image-making. In that sense, Photoshop is less a filter box than a world-building instrument—an idea consistent with Expert Photography’s explanation of Photoshop art as an overlap between photography and digital drawing.
The headline originated with a September 28, 2021 inspiration article. Treat this updated gallery as a curated source of ideas, not a formally ranked or objectively definitive list. The artists are reorganized below by what they do visually, and several use other software alongside Photoshop.
How to read this gallery
These artists are grouped by visual approach rather than ranked from best to worst. The categories overlap: a surreal self-portrait may also be a composite, a cinematic poster may depend on retouching, and a cosmic scene may combine photography with digital painting.

The descriptions in the first four groups draw mainly on the artist profiles collected by Expert Photography. The later profiles are based primarily on FixThePhoto’s inspiration list. Those pages are useful discovery sources, not objective industry rankings, and some describe artists who work across several applications.
1. Surreal photo compositing and impossible worlds
These artists begin with the logic of photography—light, perspective, texture, and physical space—and then use digital manipulation to make that logic behave impossibly. The best work does not merely add a strange object; it makes the entire scene feel as though its impossible premise has always been true.
- Erik Johansson — The Swedish visual artist is a leading example of Photoshop as a world-building instrument. He combines several photographs with physical props, then uses layer stacking, cutting, masking, blending, and tonal adjustments to create images that look like impossible photographs. Adobe’s workflow profile is especially useful for seeing how much planning sits behind the final illusion.
- Martín De Pasquale — The Argentine art director and digital artist is known for surreal self-portrait manipulation: bodies bend, split, stretch, or interact with objects in ways that turn ordinary portraiture into visual problem-solving. His Behance profile lists Photoshop among his tools, while his Impossible Photography project documents his photomanipulation practice.
- Justin Peters — Peters combines ordinary landscape photography with unexpected juxtapositions, producing scenes in which familiar places become dreamlike or physically impossible. His work is a good study in scale: a small visual change can make a landscape feel cosmic, miniature, or surreal. External coverage of his surrealist work identifies Photoshop as part of his practice. See the referenced coverage of Justin Peters.
- Vanessa Rivera — Rivera creates dreamlike scenes that resemble the expansive, symbolic worlds of childhood imagination. Her behind-the-scenes material is valuable because it reveals the difference between a polished fantasy image and the separate photographs, props, and edits used to construct it.
- Max Asabin — Asabin’s story-driven composites often bring together light painting, colored smoke, urban settings, and carefully placed figures. His visible breakdowns are particularly instructive for anyone learning how atmosphere, glow, and foreground elements can connect otherwise unrelated source images.
- Aeforia / Alexy Prefontaine — Aeforia works across photography, digital art, and graphic design, with recurring interests in nature, space, and unusual viewpoints. The work shows how Photoshop can serve as the connecting layer between a photographed subject, a designed environment, and a larger visual concept.
- Stephen McMennamy — McMennamy is associated with “combophotos,” a recognizable format that fuses visually incompatible objects into a single image. The appeal is not only the surprise but also the precision of the match: edge, scale, color, and perspective must align well enough for the joke or visual contradiction to land instantly.
2. Surreal self-portraiture and identity
Self-portrait artists have one advantage: they can design the performance, pose, costume, and expression around the final composite. Their images treat the body as both subject and raw material, using visual metaphors rather than simple retouching.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Flóra Borsi — The Hungarian photographer and digital artist is known for surreal self-portraits in which nature motifs—such as animals or botanical elements—are integrated into colorful, carefully styled portraits. Her work sits between photography, beauty imagery, and digital construction. Expert Photography notes collaborations involving Hasselblad and Adobe, and Adobe has also profiled her Photoshop-based practice, including work on iPad.
- Karen Cantú — Cantú builds surreal images from imagined scenarios and personal experience. Her work demonstrates how a composite can communicate an internal feeling or memory without becoming a literal illustration of it.
- Farelyph — Farelyph creates detailed fantasy self-portrait composites inspired by films and television series. The work is a useful lesson in character presentation: costume, pose, setting, and color grading need to support the same fictional world.
- Sony Jackson — Jackson places self-portraits in otherworldly environments ranging from deserts and jungles to oceans and Western-inspired settings. The changing locations show how a consistent portrait subject can become a different character through environment, wardrobe, lighting, and narrative context.
- Justin Designs — Justin Designs combines self-portraiture with surreal objects, robots, creatures, and social commentary. The images use manipulation not just for spectacle but to make an idea visible—often by placing the human figure in an exaggerated or unsettling situation.
3. Fantasy, mythology, and cinematic worlds
Fantasy compositing depends on more than adding dragons, skulls, or dramatic skies. It requires visual hierarchy: the viewer must know where the character is, what matters in the scene, and how the light behaves across every element. These artists approach Photoshop as a form of digital set design.

- Dylan Bolívar — The Colombian artist creates refined portrait work that merges photography with painting-like treatment, illusions, and mythological imagery. His images show how a realistic face can remain the anchor while the surrounding treatment becomes symbolic and fantastical.
- Kevin Carden — Carden produces Christian-themed digital artwork using dramatic overlays, dark palettes, atmospheric backgrounds, and emotionally charged compositions. His tutorials also make the work relevant to learners interested in building mood through controlled contrast and layered effects.
- Benjamin van Valen / Benny Productions — The Dutch graphic designer is associated with fantasy, science-fiction, and pop-culture poster-style Photoshop work. The compositions emphasize clear silhouettes, dramatic focal points, and the visual shorthand of movie-poster design.
- Shaun Jonas / Exolorian — Exolorian creates character-driven, cinematic images inspired by film and television. Many pieces have the visual language of stylized movie posters, where the character, title-like composition, color treatment, and environment all work toward one dramatic premise.
- Germán Benito — Benito makes fairy-tale and surreal compositions and is also associated with Photoshop courses or tutorials. His work is a reminder that fantasy imagery often depends on small finishing details—atmospheric haze, rim light, texture, and believable contact shadows.
- Phase Runner — Phase Runner produces comic- and film-inspired digital art, including cinematic poster recreations and speed-edit content. The work is useful for studying how a complex scene can be reduced to a strong graphic arrangement before detail is added.
- Pulkit Kudiwal — Kudiwal combines contemporary themes with fantasy creatures, dinosaurs, fairies, and post-apocalyptic settings. His range illustrates how the same compositing fundamentals—cutouts, scale, light, and color—can support very different genres.
- Pavel Bond — Bond builds dense, detail-oriented scenes around combinations such as skulls, robots, angels, and Halloween imagery. The visual challenge is managing abundance: the elements may be unusual individually, but they still need a deliberate focal point and readable depth.
- Pascal Wagner — Wagner creates surreal composites with cosmic, magical, and underwater themes, and publishes speed edits that show the construction process. His imagery is a strong reference for building atmosphere when the setting itself is the main subject.
4. Cosmic and atmospheric imagery
Cosmic art is easy to make busy and difficult to make convincing. Planets, stars, moons, clouds, smoke, and glowing effects need a consistent light source and a sense of scale. The following artists use those ingredients for mood, drama, or a feeling of isolation.
- Aronvisuals — Aronvisuals creates cosmic composites featuring planets, stars, moons, and luminous phenomena. The images are useful studies in glow control: light effects need to illuminate nearby surfaces rather than sit on top as unrelated decoration.
- Ramón Laguía — Laguía builds dark, magical universe-themed images with moons, planets, bright clouds, and staged figures. His scenes balance a theatrical human presence against vast celestial backgrounds.
- Bishal Roy — Roy combines digital drawing and Photoshop with emotional portraiture, landscapes, dramatic skies, and dark atmospheric lighting. The work shows how a portrait can be given narrative weight through the environment and the direction of light.
- Ali Khalid / Photoshop Hustler — Khalid makes composites that sit between photography and digital drawing, often using dystopian landscapes and urban environments. His work is a useful reference for blending architectural space with painterly or speculative elements.
- Batyr — Batyr produces catastrophic, highly detailed composites involving war, extreme weather, mutants, and natural disasters. The imagery demonstrates how scale and visual clutter can be used intentionally to convey danger—provided the main action remains legible.
- Calob Castellon — Castellon uses controlled lighting and glowing portraits to create a magical, narrative atmosphere. His behind-the-scenes material and tutorials make the work particularly approachable for studying how practical lighting and digital effects can reinforce each other.
5. Retouching and commercial image-making
Not every impressive Photoshop artist creates an imaginary universe. Retouching and commercial compositing demand a different kind of invisibility: the viewer should notice the subject, product, or idea rather than the repair. These practitioners show how technical control can support advertising, editorial imagery, and polished portrait work.
- Kellan Hendry — Hendry is a retoucher and image editor recognized for enhancing portraits with additional elements and for offering editing services. His work sits at the boundary between conventional portrait retouching and more visibly creative image construction.
- Gintarė Mačiulienė — Mačiulienė is associated with retouching and Photoshop freelance work, including advertising campaigns and industry publications as reported by FixThePhoto. Her area of practice highlights the precision required when an image must meet a commercial brief as well as look attractive.
- Grant Navin — Navin is an Australian Adobe artist connected with photography production and commercial representation. His profile points to the production side of image-making, where planning, capture, post-production, and client requirements are part of one workflow.
- Patrick Ellasos — Ellasos is a multimedia designer whose work includes graphic design, photo manipulation, illustration, and photography using Adobe applications. His practice illustrates how commercial images often combine several disciplines instead of fitting neatly into photography or illustration alone.
- Anil Saxena — Saxena is associated with commercial artwork for publishing and entertainment imagery, with a career in the field dating back to 1998 according to FixThePhoto. His work represents the long-running role of compositing in promotional and editorial visual communication.
- Jeff Whitlock — Whitlock’s reported specialties include creative photo retouching, illustration, commercial design, and composite art. That mix makes his work relevant to anyone trying to understand where conventional retouching ends and constructed imagery begins.
- Henry Flores — Flores is an Ecuadorian graphic editor associated with Studio Tresneuronas. The reference profile reports magazine publication and gallery exhibition, reflecting a practice that moves between client-facing graphic work and more personal visual art.
- Hassan Ahmed — Ahmed is an Egyptian Adobe artist and freelancer whose work has appeared in Behance Egypt, Adobe Photoshop, Ads of the World, and Art People Gallery, as reported by FixThePhoto. His profile reflects the reach of Photoshop-based design across portfolios, advertising, and online art communities.
6. Glitch, mixed media, and design-led experimentation
These artists push beyond the familiar photorealistic composite. They combine analog and digital texture, 3D, animation, typography, abstraction, and visual distortion. The result may look less like an altered photograph and more like a designed artifact.

His range demonstrates how a Photoshop-centered workflow can connect illustration, compositing, and graphic design.
- Stuart Lippincott / stuz0r — Lippincott focuses on fantasy worlds and works across Photoshop and Cinema 4D. FixThePhoto reports commercial clients including Adobe, Google, the NHL, and Walmart; the important lesson for learners is the integration of designed or 3D elements with a 2D finishing workflow.
- Øyvind Engevik / engwind — Engevik’s 3D-oriented design work uses Photoshop alongside 3ds Max and Unreal Engine and has been associated with MYREZE. His work shows why modern image-making frequently crosses the boundary between a single editing application and a wider 3D pipeline.
- Nevan Doyle — Doyle is known for psychedelic glitch art characterized by bright colors, abstraction, 3D effects, and a sense of kinetic movement. Reported projects include promotional work for HBO’s Euphoria and Jai Wolf, illustrating how glitch aesthetics can function in entertainment promotion as well as personal experiments.
- Aleksi Goferman — Goferman is associated with graphic and UI/UX design, logos, web design, graphic design, and Photoshop-related publications. His inclusion broadens the idea of a Photoshop artist beyond photomanipulation into systems of visual communication.
- Anxo Vizcaíno — Vizcaíno is a freelance Photoshop artist noted for thought-provoking illustrations and animations. The work is a reminder that a Photoshop-based image can be part of a time-based or conceptual piece rather than a static realistic composite.
- Mikaeli / Styl — The Finnish artist combines analog and digital aesthetics, including a recognizable 1980s influence. The contrast between aged visual language and modern digital control is a useful prompt for experimenting with grain, print texture, color limitation, and deliberate imperfection.

1. Build the idea before the layer stack
Strong composites begin with a premise: a person sharing a face with an animal, a landscape behaving like an object, or a character placed in a world that could not exist. Decide what the image is trying to communicate before collecting effects. Otherwise, the layer stack becomes a pile of attractive but unrelated assets.
2. Treat photographs as ingredients
Erik Johansson’s documented process is a useful model: plan the scene, photograph or gather the necessary parts, and then combine them. Source images do not need to be identical, but they must offer compatible perspective, resolution, light direction, and texture. A perfect cutout cannot rescue a subject photographed from the wrong angle.
3. Use masks instead of destructive erasing
Masks let you hide and reveal parts of a layer while keeping the original pixels available. They are essential for hair, smoke, atmospheric haze, overlapping limbs, architectural edges, and every situation in which the blend needs several revisions. Paint with a soft brush at low opacity when the transition should be gradual; use a harder edge when the object is genuinely sharp.
4. Match light before adding drama
Before applying glow, particles, colored smoke, or a cinematic grade, identify the scene’s key light. Check the direction of shadows, the brightness of the subject’s lit side, the color of reflected light, and the density of the surrounding atmosphere. Add a contact shadow where an object meets a surface. These quiet corrections usually do more for realism than another dramatic overlay.

5. Use adjustment layers and blending deliberately
Curves, Levels, Hue/Saturation, Color Balance, and selective color adjustments can bring disparate sources into the same tonal world. Blend modes are useful when their behavior matches the material: Screen for light-like elements, Multiply for some shadows, and Overlay or Soft Light for controlled contrast or texture. Lower opacity and mask the effect so it does not cover every part of the image equally.
6. Keep the focal point readable
Fantasy and catastrophe scenes can contain dozens of details. Reduce the visual competition around the subject with contrast, sharpness, saturation, or atmospheric perspective. Zoom out and view the image as a thumbnail: if the story disappears at small size, the composition may need a clearer hierarchy before more detail is added.
7. Expect a mixed-tool workflow
“Photoshop artist” is an editorial label, not a claim that every image was made exclusively in Photoshop. The reference profiles mention workflows involving Illustrator, Cinema 4D, 3ds Max, Unreal Engine, After Effects, Lightroom, Poser, and digital drawing software. Photoshop may be the central compositing or finishing tool while other applications handle 3D, animation, drawing, or raw processing.

The Bottom Line
The most useful lesson from these 42 artists is that Photoshop becomes powerful when it serves an idea. Learn to plan the image, combine compatible source material, mask patiently, match light and color, and finish with restraint. The result can be surreal without feeling careless—and imaginative without pretending that every image is Photoshop-only.
