Wizards of the Coast acknowledged that recent marketing images for Ravnica Remastered may have included generative-AI elements, after initially defending the work as human-made. The public record does not establish that AI-generated art appeared on the Magic cards themselves. Wizards said it would rethink how it works with vendors on marketing creative.
What happened with the Ravnica Remastered image?
In early January 2024, Magic social accounts posted marketing images promoting Ravnica Remastered. After community members questioned whether the imagery included AI-generated elements, Wizards initially stood by an assertion that the art was human-made and not AI-generated, according to a contemporaneous report.
On January 7, Wizards published “An Update on Generative AI Tools and Magic.” It acknowledged that recent marketing images may have included generative-AI elements and said it needed to rethink how it worked with vendors on marketing creative beyond products, including social-media images. Wizards also expressed support for greater transparency and disclosure.

The distinction is between final game products and marketing creative. Wizards’ stated policy says contributors must refrain from using generative-AI tools to create final Magic products; its January update addressed vendor processes for marketing work outside those products. The available public evidence does not show that the cards themselves contained AI-generated art.

What Wizards acknowledged—and what remains unknown
Wizards’ January 7 statement supports a limited conclusion: recent marketing images may have included generative-AI elements, and the company wanted to rethink how it worked with vendors on marketing creative. It did not identify the exact image components, the people involved, or any AI tool or feature used.
The available sources do not establish that an entire image was generated from a prompt, that every irregularity noticed by viewers came from AI, or that AI-generated artwork appeared on the cards. Avoid treating a visual suspicion as proof of a specific tool, process, or policy violation.

The FAQ says Wizards evaluates AI-detection resources and wants human review to remain involved. It describes a pilot with Artistree to develop a customized detection tool. It also notes that AI features in standard tools such as Photoshop can make usage difficult to detect.

When a concern is raised, Wizards says it reviews available information, re-reviews the art, reruns tools, and contacts the artist. The company recognizes that investigations can be inconclusive and that privacy can limit what it discloses publicly. It does not comment publicly on every concern.
Why the initial response mattered
The controversy involved both questions about the marketing imagery and the change in Wizards’ public explanation. The company first defended the art as human-made, then acknowledged that recent marketing images may have included generative-AI elements.
