Anthracite is a very dark gray that can look close to black. RAL 7016, officially named Anthracite Grey, is a useful standardized reference; RAL describes it as a dark gray with a blue undertone. Other products called anthracite may differ, so sample the exact finish in the room before committing.
Use anthracite as a deliberate dark anchor on a wall, cabinets, or trim, and balance it with lighter or warmer elements. Light, undertones, nearby finishes, and surface sheen all affect how it looks.
What does anthracite look like?
Anthracite is a charcoal gray with a near-black appearance. In brighter light its gray character is easier to see; in dimmer conditions it can look almost black. RAL 7016 is the named RAL Classic reference, but the name “anthracite” alone does not guarantee a match across paint, metal, tile, fabric, or other materials.
RAL describes its RAL 7016 sample as a dark gray with a blue undertone. Other anthracite products can have different undertones. Room lighting and neighboring finishes can make blue, green, violet, or brown qualities more noticeable.

How to choose an anthracite color
- Decide whether you need the standardized RAL 7016 reference or simply a dark charcoal that suits the room.
- Get a physical sample of the exact paint or finish. Screen renderings are only indicative.
- View the sample in the room’s actual light and beside floors, countertops, furniture, and trim.
- Compare the sample’s depth and undertone, as well as its intended surface and sheen, before choosing.
A physical RAL 7016 sample is a useful starting point when matching that standard. It does not guarantee that a different product labeled anthracite will look identical.
How to decorate with anthracite
Use it as an accent or architectural detail
Try anthracite on an accent wall, cabinets, or trim to create contrast and definition. If a full room of deep gray might feel too subdued, confine it to a smaller feature. Use it deliberately rather than scattering isolated dark accents.

Balance it with lighter or warmer elements
Soft white, stone, warm wood, brass, and warm-neutral textiles are possible companions, not universal rules. If the chosen gray reads cool, test it beside clean whites, stone, or cooler metals. For a warmer mood, try wood, brass, or warm neutral textiles.

Avoid relying only on dark, flat surfaces. Vary materials and textures to give the scheme more depth. Sherwin-Williams notes that texture affects the mood of gray schemes, with smoother surfaces tending to feel more formal and rougher textures more informal.
