To preserve flowers, choose air-drying for upright stems, pressing for flat flowers, or silica gel to support a bloom’s three-dimensional shape. Start with flowers in good condition and free of surface moisture; none of these methods prevents all fading or guarantees how long flowers will last.
Choose a method by the finished shape
| Method | Finished result | Approximate time | Supplies and considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air-drying | Upright stems for a vase or hanging arrangement | Two to three weeks | Small bunches, ties, and a warm, dark, dry place with good air circulation |
| Pressing | Flat flowers for cards, art, or a collection | Varies; check until dry | Absorbent paper, a book, and even weight; a flower press is optional |
| Silica-gel drying | A bloom supported in a more natural, three-dimensional shape | About 3–7 days | Silica gel, a shallow airtight container, and careful handling |
Times are approximate and can vary with flower thickness and conditions. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach describes air-drying as usually taking two or three weeks and silica-gel drying as taking about 3–7 days. The methods preserve different forms, so choose by the result you want.
Prepare flowers
- Choose sound flowers. Use flowers in good condition, without dew or rain on them.
- Remove foliage. Strip leaves from stems before air-drying; remove most of the stem before silica-gel drying.
- Decide on the finished form. Keep stems upright for air-drying, flatten specimens for pressing, or position petals as desired for silica gel.
1. Air-dry flowers for upright stems
Air-drying is a straightforward choice for flowers you want to keep on their stems for a vase or hanging arrangement. Large blooms may be better dried individually.
#1 Best Overall
- FAST DRYING --- The silica gel flower drying is not only a newly developed highly efficient hygroscopic silica gel material, but also less pressure on flowers, maintaining the original shape and color of flowers at the same time can quickly and thoroughly remove the water in flowers and plant materials. It takes 2-5 days to dry the flowers.
- REUSABLE --- The flower drying silica will change from orange to dark green after absorbing moisture, use the microwave or oven to reactivate the silicone until the dark green beads return to orange, then as a new reuse. The beads are stored in an airtight sealing bag for long-term preservation and protection.
- PURE, NON-TOXIC --- Silica beads for drying flowers can be made of pure non-toxic raw materials, coupled with dust technology treatment so that no chemical reaction can be completed to absorb the water of flowers. Simply place the flower or plant material in an airtight container, cover it with enough silicone crystals, and wait for them to dry.
- 5LBS SILICA GEL FLOWER DRYING --- Flower preservation kit contains 5LB (2.27kg) flower desiccant *1, brush *1, gloves 1 pair, sealed plastic box *1. It is recommended that you wear gloves, put the flowers and desiccant in a sealed plastic box, and use the brush to gently sweep away the particles on the flowers after absorbing the water.
- SMALL CRYSTAL --- The silica sand flower drying is less than 1 mm, the pressure is small will not cause damage to the flowers, to ensure the integrity and beauty of the flowers. Perfect for beginners to do flower dry DIF craft, prolong the beauty and value of flowers, and leave good memories for later.
How to air-dry
- Remove foliage from the stems.
- Gather small bunches and secure them with a rubber band or twist tie. The bundles shrink as they dry, so a secure tie helps keep them together.
- Hang the bunches upside down in a warm, dark, dry place with good air circulation.
- Keep them out of direct sunlight to reduce fading, and leave them until dry.
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and Illinois Extension say two or three weeks is usually sufficient. Treat that as an approximate guide, not a guaranteed deadline.
2. Press flowers for flat projects
Pressing is suited to cards, artwork, and herbarium-style sheets. It flattens flowers, so it will not preserve a bloom’s three-dimensional form.
How to press
- Arrange the flower as flat as possible between absorbent paper, such as newspaper.
- Put the paper and flower inside a book and close it.
- Add books or other weight to apply even pressure across the specimen.
- Keep the stack in a warm, dry place and check the flower. Remove it once it is dry.
The Natural History Museum recommends even weight. For bulky, moist material, its guide suggests adding absorbent layers and changing kitchen roll after the first day. A purpose-built press is optional: books, paper, and weights can work for a basic attempt.

3. Use silica gel to support a bloom’s shape
Silica gel is a desiccant that surrounds flowers as they dry. Iowa State University Extension says it dries flowers quickly and can help them retain good color. Follow the instructions for the particular drying material you use.

How to dry flowers with silica gel
- Remove most of the stem from the flower. Florist wire can be used later if you need to arrange the dried bloom.
- Place the flower in a shallow, airtight container with its petals positioned as you want them.
- Gently cover the flower with silica gel, taking care not to disturb the petal arrangement.
- Leave it to dry, then uncover it carefully. Iowa State University Extension gives an approximate range of 3–7 days; flower thickness affects timing.
- Handle the dried bloom gently. Missouri Extension cautions that removing flowers too early can leave petals drooping, while leaving them too long can make them brittle.
Iowa State University Extension says used silica gel can be dried for reuse and stored airtight. Follow the directions for your specific material.
How should I preserve a meaningful bouquet?
Choose the method by the keepsake you want: air-dry stems for a vase, press selected flowers for flat artwork, or use silica gel for blooms whose three-dimensional form matters. You can use different methods for different flowers in the same bouquet. If arranging silica-gel-dried flowers, florist wire may help rebuild stems.

- All in One Kit: Package includes high-quality 5lbs silica gel flower drying, an airtight container, a brush, and a user manual. The flower drying silica is stored in double sealed bags for long-term preservation and protection, ensuring the product arrives in the best condition
- Fine Crystals Less Than 1mm: Lightweight silica gel for drying flowers puts less pressure on fresh flowers, making it easier to reach between the petals. Flowers can be dried in 3-6 days, maintaining their natural shape, preserving their vibrant colors with minimal discoloration
- Safe and Non-toxic Formula: Unlike blue silica sand, Viktairy orange flower drying silica gel crystals are Cocl2-free, dust-treated, and odorless. They absorb moisture naturally without relying on chemical reactions
- Color Indicating Technology: Flower drying preservation kit contains 10% orange crystals and 90% clear crystals. When the orange crystals absorb moisture, they turn dark green, indicating that the silica sand is saturated and needs to be recharged
- Rechargeable and Reusable: To reactivate the saturated silica gel beads, spread it evenly on a baking pan to form a thin layer. Place it in an oven at 200-250F for 0.5 to 1 hour, or microwave it for about 10 minutes at 700w until all green crystals turn orange again
