The wording asks Gemini to preserve identity, but that is a request, not a guarantee. Faces can change between generations, particularly when the prompt also asks for a substantial artistic transformation.

Firefly can also work with more than one visual reference in some workflows, including documented workflows involving a product image and a portrait reference. That can help communicate pose, framing, lighting, or texture, but multiple references do not guarantee a consistent face or a successful result in every portrait.

Method 3: Restyle the image in Microsoft Designer

Microsoft Designer is a practical browser-based option when you want both restyling and ordinary photo cleanup. Microsoft documents image upload, restyling, background removal or blurring, object erasing, upscaling, downloading, and continued editing on the Designer canvas.

You need a Microsoft account. Microsoft’s cited documentation describes Designer as licensed for personal, non-commercial use, so check the current terms before using a generated image in advertising, merchandise, client work, or other commercial publishing.

Steps

1. Open Designer and choose its image-editing experience.

Designer states that AI-generated images receive Content Credentials based on C2PA provenance metadata. This is useful transparency information about the image’s origin, but it does not automatically establish that the image is legally cleared for every use.

Method 4: Use a local ComfyUI image-to-image workflow

ComfyUI is the advanced option. Its image-to-image workflow takes an input image and a text prompt, then generates a new image from both. Because it runs locally after setup, it can give you more control over files, models, workflow nodes, and the balance between resemblance and stylization.

This is not a one-click consumer method. You need to install ComfyUI using its official getting-started instructions, install a compatible image-generation checkpoint or workflow, and have hardware capable of running the selected model. The exact setup depends on your operating system, graphics hardware, and model.

Basic workflow

1. Install ComfyUI and a compatible model or image-to-image workflow.
2. Load the workflow in ComfyUI.
3. Add the source photo to the Load Image node.
4. Enter a prompt describing the painted-animation qualities you want.
5. Start with a moderate denoise value.
6. Queue several versions and compare each one with the source photo.

Denoise is the key control. A lower value keeps the output closer to the reference image, which is useful for preserving a face, pose, or composition. A higher value permits a stronger transformation but also increases the chance that identity, clothing, objects, and layout will drift. At a denoise value of 1, the reference image’s characteristics are effectively lost. Change the setting gradually rather than jumping straight from a faithful edit to a completely different image.

ComfyUI is a good choice when you want repeatable experimentation and local control. It is a poor choice if you need the fastest possible result and do not want to install models or troubleshoot a node-based workflow.

A dependable prompt follows this structure:

When the result is not right

How to get a closer likeness without losing the painted look

• signs, book covers, labels, and other text;
• logos and branded objects;
• duplicate people, animals, or background objects;
• hair edges and unnatural blending around the subject.

Keep the original and generated files clearly labeled. If you are publishing the image, retain any relevant provenance information and document which tool produced it.

Copyright, privacy, and “Ghibli style” cautions

“Ghibli-inspired” is commonly used as shorthand for a soft, hand-painted animation aesthetic, but it should not be treated as a promise that a tool can reproduce a named studio’s style exactly. A safer prompt focuses on observable traits—watercolor texture, organic linework, warm light, muted colors, detailed greenery, and a storybook mood—rather than demanding an exact imitation.

Only upload images you have the right to edit. Avoid sending private or sensitive photographs to a cloud service unless you understand how that service handles uploads, retention, and training. Google specifically advises users to consider copyright and privacy rights before relying on or publishing generated content.

Generated images are not automatically cleared for commercial use. Review the current terms of the selected service, the rights in the source photograph, and any rights belonging to recognizable people, brands, artwork, or locations. Microsoft Designer’s documented personal, non-commercial licensing is particularly important to verify before commercial publication.
