Midjourney Adds Pinterest-Like Moodboards and Multiple Personalization Profiles

Midjourney’s Moodboards turn curated image collections into reusable style signals, while multiple Personalization Profiles let users switch between visual preferences for different projects. Here is what the feature does—and what “custom AI models” does not mean.

Midjourney’s new Moodboards make visual personalization reusable: collect reference images, name and update a board, then apply its style direction to later generations. The service also supports multiple Personalization Profiles, but “multiple custom AI image models” is an informal description—not evidence that users can train, download, or export independent foundation models.

What Midjourney’s Moodboards actually add

Midjourney’s Moodboards turn a collection of reference images into a reusable style signal for image generation. Instead of rebuilding the same visual direction in every prompt, a creator can collect images, name the collection, update it over time, and apply it to later generations.

The feature is “Pinterest-like” only in its collecting behavior: users assemble an inspiration board from multiple images and use that collection to guide creative work. It does not turn Midjourney into Pinterest, import Pinterest’s recommendation system, or indicate a Pinterest partnership.

The other important change is support for multiple personalization profiles. Together, profiles and Moodboards make Midjourney’s personalization more reusable and project-oriented. They let a user keep different visual directions for different clients, genres, or teams rather than relying on one generalized personal style.

Not independent custom models in the conventional sense

The phrase “multiple custom AI image models” needs qualification. Midjourney’s announcement described users as being able to create multiple personalization profiles and personalize models with Moodboards. However, the available documentation does not say that users can train independent foundation models, download model weights, export a personalized model to another service, or fine-tune a standalone model from scratch.

The more accurate description is account-level personalization: Midjourney uses a profile or Moodboard to influence generations inside its platform. A profile or board is not a portable model that the user owns and can deploy elsewhere, and the cited material does not establish exclusive ownership of a generated “style model.”

How Moodboards work

Midjourney’s current documentation describes a Moodboard as a curated image collection for developing a distinctive style across an image-generation project. Images can be added in three ways:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Upload images from a device.
  • Provide image URLs.
  • Select images from the user’s Midjourney gallery.

Each board can be named and updated. Once used, it influences the visual character of subsequent generations. This makes the feature particularly useful when the intended aesthetic is difficult to explain in words—such as a particular mixture of lighting, color, materials, composition, and atmosphere.

A Moodboard is therefore more persistent than an ordinary descriptive phrase in a prompt. The creator can establish a visual direction once, then reuse it across related prompts and projects.

Moodboards versus Personalization Profiles

Feature Input Best understood as
Personalization Profile Images ranked or rated by the user A learned representation of the user’s visual preferences
Moodboard A curated collection of selected reference images An intentional visual direction assembled for a project or style

Both affect future generations, but they answer different needs. A profile reflects what the user tends to prefer across ratings. A Moodboard reflects what the user deliberately wants to bring together for a particular body of work.

For example, an illustrator might maintain one personalization profile that reflects their broad taste while creating separate Moodboards for a children’s-book commission, a dark fantasy series, and a product-illustration client. That workflow is an application of the documented tools, not a claim that Midjourney prescribes those categories.

Multiple profiles make personalization contextual

Midjourney’s December 16, 2024 announcement said users could maintain multiple named personalization profiles, select one or more profiles as defaults, and view images associated with particular profiles. That matters most for people who move between different creative contexts or collaborate with others.

One profile might represent a painterly preference, another a graphic editorial taste, and another a shared team direction. The practical advantage is not that each profile becomes a separate downloadable AI model. It is that the user can switch the visual preference being applied instead of continually retraining or manually restating it.

Midjourney also said personalization setup became up to five times faster. The announcement gave approximate milestones: users could begin creating a profile after 40 image ratings, a profile should be fairly stable at around 200 ratings, and roughly 2,000 ratings could continue to improve results even though users would no longer practically need 10,000 ratings. These are figures from that announcement, not guarantees that every account will reach the same quality at the same number of ratings.

Moodboards versus Style References

Use a Moodboard when the target is a whole visual language—for example, a combination of muted colors, rough brushwork, editorial composition, and a particular atmosphere. Use a Style Reference when one focused style signal is more appropriate.

Midjourney’s update notes also describe workflows that combine multiple Moodboards and combine Moodboards with Style References. A creator could maintain separate boards for color language, character design, environment design, or editorial atmosphere, then blend them for a particular assignment. Those labels are practical workflow interpretations rather than official required board types.

How to use a Moodboard today

  1. Open the Moodboards page on Midjourney’s website. Moodboards are managed on the website, even though their generated codes can be used in Discord.
  2. Create or select a board. Add images by uploading them, entering image URLs, or choosing images from your Midjourney gallery.
  3. Name and curate the board. Keep images that express the direction you want to reuse rather than adding unrelated references simply because they look attractive individually.
  4. Update the board as the project develops. Removing or adding images changes the board’s version.
  5. Apply it through Personalization or a prompt parameter. You can select one or more default Moodboards through the Personalization interface, or use a specific board with a parameter such as --p mID, replacing mID with the relevant Moodboard code.
  6. Compare results before changing everything. Test the same prompt with no board, one board, and a combination of boards so you can see which visual characteristics the board is contributing.

Moodboard codes are versioned. Adding or removing images creates new codes because the board has changed. Earlier codes can still be found through previous prompts, while the current Moodboard ID represents the latest version of the board.

The --p parameter is documented for use on both the website and Discord. The board itself is managed on the website; Discord is an option for applying an existing code in a prompt.

Compatibility and limitations

The current Moodboards documentation lists compatibility with Midjourney versions 6, 7, and 8.1. It also states that Moodboards cannot be used with Style Reference Version (--sv) or Style Weight (--sw).

Midjourney later announced that Personalization and Moodboards were added to niji 7, its anime-focused image model. That is a later compatibility expansion and should not be confused with the original December 2024 launch.

Midjourney’s V8 Alpha announcement also described Moodboard support in the experimental V8 environment and warned that Moodboard jobs were temporarily slower and more GPU-intensive there. Those were alpha-specific conditions; they should not be treated as a universal statement about every current version or subscription plan.

A practical workflow for painters and visual artists

Moodboards are most useful when the reference collection has a clear purpose. A painter or illustrator could use the following workflow:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the visual problem. Decide whether the board is meant to guide palette, surface, lighting, composition, subject treatment, or a broader atmosphere.
  2. Collect a coherent set. Choose images that share the qualities you want, while avoiding accidental signals that conflict with the project.
  3. Keep project directions separate. Create different boards for unrelated clients or genres instead of allowing one board to become a mixture of incompatible preferences.
  4. Generate controlled comparisons. Keep the written prompt similar while changing the Moodboard. This helps distinguish the board’s influence from changes in subject matter or wording.
  5. Refine rather than endlessly add. Since board versions change when images are added or removed, preserve a useful version before making major revisions.
  6. Use the result as direction, not a substitute for judgment. A Moodboard can create consistency, but the artist still needs to evaluate composition, anatomy, cultural context, originality, and suitability for the final work.

This lowers the friction between reference gathering and generation. It is especially relevant to designers, illustrators, concept artists, marketers, and teams that need a repeatable aesthetic across many images. The feature supports those workflows, but the available material does not establish a measured productivity improvement.

Protect reference-image provenance

Midjourney confirms that users can upload images or provide image URLs. That technical ability does not answer whether every externally sourced image is legally safe to use.

Before adding references, record where they came from and whether you have permission to use them for this purpose. Do not assume that uploading an image grants permission to reuse it, and do not treat a Moodboard as a solution to copyright, licensing, privacy, or client-confidentiality questions. For commissioned work, keep a clear distinction between references used for internal direction and assets that will be delivered or published.

What this means for Midjourney

The significant change is not simply the ability to upload reference images. Image references already existed as part of creative workflows. The change is that Midjourney packages visual preferences into reusable, named, updateable objects that can be selected across prompts and projects.

That shifts personalization from a one-time preference experiment toward a system for managing several visual identities. A user can maintain a broad learned profile, create project-specific Moodboards, combine boards when appropriate, and switch among them as the work changes.

So the most accurate headline interpretation is: Midjourney is making personalization more reusable and project-oriented. It is not evidence that Midjourney has given users conventional, independently trainable custom AI models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Midjourney let users create and download their own custom AI models?

No. The available Midjourney announcement and documentation describe personalization profiles and Moodboards that influence generation inside Midjourney. They do not establish downloadable model weights, conventional fine-tuning controls, export to another service, or fully independent models trained from scratch.

What is the difference between a Midjourney Moodboard and a Style Reference?

Moodboards are broader and are built from a curated collection of images. Style References are intended to provide a more specific visual cue. Use a Moodboard for a wider visual direction and a Style Reference for a narrower style signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Moodboards be used in Discord?

Moodboards are managed through the Moodboards page on Midjourney’s website. You can apply a specific board with a parameter such as --p mID; Midjourney documents that this parameter works on the website and in Discord.

Which Midjourney versions support Moodboards?

The current documentation lists versions 6, 7, and 8.1. Midjourney later announced support for Personalization and Moodboards in niji 7. Compatibility and limitations can change as versions are updated.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Midjourney’s Moodboards are reusable collections of visual references, while Personalization Profiles learn from image-rating choices. They can help artists maintain different styles across projects, but they are account-level controls inside Midjourney—not downloadable or independently trainable custom foundation models.
