Adobe Photoshop is now available inside ChatGPT through an official integration. You can upload a photo, describe a change in plain language, refine the result conversationally, and download it—without first learning every Photoshop tool.
The important qualification is that this is not the complete desktop Photoshop application. It is a beginner-friendly way to access selected Photoshop editing capabilities, with Photoshop on the web or iOS available when you need more precise control.
What “Photoshop in ChatGPT” actually is
Adobe Photoshop is available inside ChatGPT as an official Adobe app integration. You can upload an image, describe an edit in ordinary language, review the result, ask for refinements, and download the finished image or continue editing it in Photoshop on the web or iOS.

That makes Photoshop much easier to approach if you do not know where the traditional tools are. Instead of beginning with layers, masks, selections, and adjustment panels, you can start with a request such as “remove the trash can from the background” or “make the colors warmer.”

It is important not to overstate what this means: ChatGPT does not contain the complete desktop Photoshop application. The documented experience exposes selected Photoshop editing capabilities through an app, while the full web or mobile Photoshop workflow provides more control for detailed and repeatable work. Can you use Photoshop in ChatGPT for free?
Adobe says that anyone with a ChatGPT account, including free users, can try Photoshop in ChatGPT. Its current tutorial also says that a Photoshop subscription is not required and that complimentary AI edits are available each day.
“Free” does not mean unlimited or identical access for every account. OpenAI notes that app availability and capabilities can vary according to your ChatGPT plan, region, workspace settings, administrator controls, platform, and current product rules. Daily complimentary-edit limits may also change. If the app is missing or a limit appears, check the current ChatGPT app directory and Adobe’s requirements rather than assuming that your account is malfunctioning.
How to connect Adobe Photoshop to ChatGPT
Labels and navigation can change as ChatGPT updates, but this is the current documented route:
- Open ChatGPT in a supported desktop browser and sign in.
- Open Apps from the sidebar.
- Search for Adobe Photoshop.
- Select Connect.
- Complete the Adobe or OpenAI authorization flow if OAuth or another sign-in step is requested.
- Start a new conversation and invoke Photoshop through the tools or plus menu, or use an
@Photoshopmention if that option is shown in your account.
Adobe also documents a route through Settings > Apps & Connectors, followed by invoking Photoshop from the plus menu or with @Photoshop. OpenAI’s general Adobe integration listing describes the broader Adobe connection, but the steps and available options may differ by account and workspace.
Start with a clear image-editing request
For reliable results, include three things:
- The target: what person, object, area, or overall image should change.
- The edit: what you want Photoshop to do.
- The constraint: what must remain unchanged or what visual quality should be preserved.
A useful pattern is:
“Change [target] by [edit], while keeping [constraint].”

For example, “Remove the person in the far-left background, keep the main subject unchanged, and preserve the original lighting” is more precise than “clean up this photo.”

1. Clean up distractions
Try prompts such as:
- “Remove the trash can from the background.”
- “Clean up the small distractions behind the subject, but do not change the subject.”
- “Brighten the main subject slightly while keeping the background natural.”
Inspect the area around the removal afterward. Generative editing can alter nearby details, edges, shadows, or patterns, so a successful-looking first result still deserves a close review.
2. Edit an object or person
You can ask Photoshop to adjust a specific part of an image:
- “Change the color of the shirt to deep blue and leave the person’s face unchanged.”
- “Make the vase stand out slightly more without changing its shape.”
- “Edit the background behind the person, but preserve the person’s pose and clothing.”
These instructions express an intention, not a guarantee. Check identity, object geometry, text, fine edges, and patterns yourself. If the edit affects too much of the image, describe the target more narrowly in your next prompt.
3. Replace or generate a background

Ask for consistency with the original image—such as matching light direction, perspective, and color—but do not assume the result will reproduce those elements perfectly. Inspect hair, transparent objects, hands, fine outlines, and contact shadows especially carefully.

4. Adjust light and color
For broad improvements, natural-language prompts can replace the need to find individual beginner controls:
- “Improve the exposure without blowing out the bright areas.”
- “Make the colors less dull and increase contrast moderately.”
- “Give this image a softer evening tone while keeping skin tones natural.”
- “Crop the image to focus more closely on the subject.”
Specific language helps prevent an edit from becoming too strong. Words such as slightly, moderately, subtle, and keep natural are useful when you want a correction rather than a dramatic transformation.
Do not expect the first prompt to be perfect
The most useful workflow is conversational iteration:
- Upload the image and request one clearly defined change.
- Examine the complete result, including areas that were not supposed to change.
- Ask for a focused correction rather than rewriting the entire request.
- Repeat until the result is acceptable.
- Download the image or open it in Photoshop on the web or iOS for more controlled work.
Useful follow-up prompts include:
- “Undo the change to the person’s face and keep the original face.”
- “The replacement background is too bright; make it match the original exposure.”
- “Keep the object’s original shape and change only its color.”
- “The edge around the hair looks artificial; refine the background without changing the hair.”
Adobe specifically describes continuing to prompt for additional generative edits and then using Photoshop controls to refine the result. Treat each output as something to inspect, not as proof that every requested detail was preserved.
When should you open the image in Photoshop on the web or iOS?
Stay in ChatGPT when you want a quick edit, are exploring an idea, or need a straightforward cleanup, background change, or lighting adjustment. Move to Photoshop on the web or iOS when you need:
- layered revisions that can be revisited independently;
- precise selections or masks;
- repeatable production work across several images;
- detailed retouching and controlled adjustment settings;
- more predictable control over what is and is not changed;
- additional Photoshop tools and effects beyond the conversational integration.
Adobe says the edited image can be opened in Photoshop on the web or iOS. Its web documentation highlights layers, masks, effects, adjustment tools, and other controls that are better suited to work requiring precision. Also keep the products distinct: features in Photoshop on the web may not be available in exactly the same form inside ChatGPT.

Requirements, availability, and account caveats
Adobe’s current technical-requirements page says Photoshop for ChatGPT runs in a supported desktop browser and requires a stable internet connection. Adobe currently lists global availability except in regions restricted by its trade-compliance rules, along with support for multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Chinese. Browser, operating-system, language, and regional support are changeable; check Adobe’s Photoshop for ChatGPT technical requirements before troubleshooting.
In a managed ChatGPT workspace, an administrator may disable apps or restrict connections. A feature can also be available on one account, browser, or platform but not another. If connection fails, check the following:
- you are signed in to the intended ChatGPT and Adobe accounts;
- the Adobe Photoshop app appears in the current app directory;
- your workspace administrator permits the connection;
- your browser and operating system meet Adobe’s current requirements;
- your internet connection is stable;
- you have not reached a current daily or account-level usage limit.
Privacy and quality checks before you download
Do not upload an image merely because an edit is easy. Before sending a photograph, consider whether it contains confidential documents, private personal information, other people who have not agreed to the upload, or material subject to client or workplace restrictions. Review the permissions and account notices shown during connection, and follow the rules that apply to your image and organization.
Before publishing or relying on an edited image, check:
- faces and identity;
- hands, hair, thin lines, and object boundaries;
- signs, labels, logos, and other text;
- perspective, reflections, shadows, and repeated patterns;
- the parts of the image that were supposed to remain untouched;
- whether the lighting and color still look believable.
Conversational editing lowers the entry barrier; it does not remove the need for visual judgment.

Is a Photoshop book still useful if ChatGPT does the editing?
Yes—if you want to understand and control the result. Photoshop in ChatGPT is a convenient starting point, but it does not expose every advanced Photoshop control, and a prompt cannot teach you as much about layers, masks, selections, and non-destructive editing as working through a structured exercise can.

Optional structured learning
If you prefer a guided, reference-style approach, consider an Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a Book edition or its current successor.
