There is no free, one-to-one clone of Adobe After Effects. The best alternative depends on which part of After Effects you actually use: Blender is the broadest replacement for 3D motion graphics and VFX, DaVinci Resolve with Fusion is the most practical choice for editing plus compositing, Natron is the closest open-source dedicated compositor, Cavalry excels at procedural 2D motion design, Maxon Autograph offers a newer unified 2D/3D workflow, and Krita is strongest for hand-drawn animation and painted effects.

Think of these applications as different production pipelines rather than six versions of After Effects. After Effects combines layer-based compositing, keyframe animation, motion graphics, tracking, effects, and links to other Adobe applications. The alternatives below divide those jobs among 3D scenes, node graphs, procedural systems, editing timelines, and raster-painting workflows.

Quick comparison

Software Best for Workflow Platforms Free status Main compromise
Blender 3D motion graphics, simulations, tracking, compositing, and VFX 3D scene, timeline, nodes, compositor Windows, macOS, Linux Free and open source Steeper learning curve; not layer-based
DaVinci Resolve with Fusion Editing, compositing, color, audio, and delivery in one project Node-based Fusion inside a nonlinear editor Windows, macOS, Linux Free edition available Some advanced features are Studio-only
Natron Dedicated open-source compositing and VFX Node graph Windows, macOS, Linux Free and open source Older stable release and smaller ecosystem
Cavalry Procedural 2D motion, typography, and data visualization Real-time procedural design macOS, Windows Free for individuals Not a full 3D or VFX replacement; no Linux version
Maxon Autograph Unified 2D/3D motion graphics, compositing, and responsive layouts Motion-design and compositing workspace Windows, macOS Free with a MyMaxon account under the stated current policy Newer product; plugins may need separate licenses
Krita Hand-drawn animation, painted effects, textures, and matte painting Raster painting with a timeline Cross-platform Free and open source Specialist companion, not a complete compositor

How to choose the right After Effects alternative

  • Choose Blender when the project needs 3D models, camera tracking, simulations, lighting, or a broad open-source pipeline.
  • Choose DaVinci Resolve/Fusion when you also need to edit footage, grade color, mix audio, and deliver the finished video.
  • Choose Natron when compositing is the priority and you want an open-source, node-based application.
  • Choose Cavalry for kinetic typography, repeated design systems, charts, data-driven animation, and looping 2D graphics.
  • Choose Maxon Autograph if you want a newer unified 2D/3D motion-graphics environment and are comfortable with a developing product.
  • Choose Krita for frame-by-frame animation, hand-painted effects, concept art, textures, and matte-painting elements.

A useful practical workflow is to combine tools. For example, you can draw painted elements in Krita, create a 3D scene in Blender, build procedural titles in Cavalry, and assemble or finish the result in Resolve. Choosing two specialized free tools can be more effective than forcing one application to imitate every part of After Effects.

1. Blender: the best broad all-in-one replacement

Blender is the closest single free application to a broad After Effects replacement, provided you are willing to learn a 3D-first workflow. It includes modeling, rendering, animation and rigging, simulation, compositing, motion tracking, video editing, and VFX tools. Its official documentation lists motion graphics, VFX, compositing, animation, and video editing among its supported production uses.

Blender is especially strong when motion graphics are attached to a physical or virtual scene. It can handle product animation, title sequences with 3D camera movement, particle and physics-based effects, tracked graphics, architectural visualization, and VFX shots that require lighting or depth. Its compositor and node-based materials also make it suitable for combining rendered elements and processing footage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What makes Blender useful for motion graphics

  • 3D production in one application: model or import objects, animate them, light the scene, render it, and composite the result without switching to a separate 3D package.
  • Camera tracking: useful for placing graphics or 3D objects into moving footage.
  • Simulation: appropriate for effects involving particles, smoke, fluids, cloth, rigid bodies, or other physical behavior.
  • Grease Pencil: supports 2D animation inside Blender, including pressure-sensitive graphics-tablet input. The Grease Pencil documentation explains its role in 2D drawing and animation.
  • Video and compositing tools: useful for a self-contained pipeline, although Blender is not primarily an editing application.

The trade-off is conceptual as much as technical. After Effects users normally think in layers, compositions, masks, and property timelines. Blender asks you to think in terms of objects, cameras, scenes, 3D space, nodes, and render passes. It can animate flat planes and 2D artwork, but that does not make it behave like a layer-based compositor.

Pick Blender when: your work includes 3D assets, simulations, camera tracking, product visuals, or VFX-heavy title sequences. If you mainly need quick 2D text animation over video, Resolve/Fusion or Cavalry may get you to the result with less setup.

2. DaVinci Resolve with Fusion: best for editing plus VFX

The free edition of DaVinci Resolve includes the Fusion page for visual effects and motion graphics. Fusion is a node-based environment with 2D and 3D tools, animation curves, keyframe editors, tracking, rotoscoping, keying, particles, and animated titles. Resolve also includes editing, color correction, audio post-production, and delivery tools in the same application.

This makes Resolve/Fusion a particularly practical choice for YouTube videos, short films, commercials, documentaries, and other projects that begin with recorded footage and end as a finished edit. Instead of rendering an effect from one application and importing it into another, you can edit the timeline, move into Fusion for a shot or title, grade the result, mix audio, and export from the same project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where Fusion differs from After Effects

Fusion is node-based rather than layer-based. A simple composite may be represented as a chain of nodes that merges foreground and background images, applies a key or mask, adds an effect, and sends the result to the output. That structure can be more transparent for complex composites, but it may feel unfamiliar if your experience is built around stacked layers and precompositions.

Resolve’s free edition is capable, but it is not the same as the separately licensed DaVinci Resolve Studio. Some advanced effects, processing features, and other functions remain Studio-only. Before committing to a project, check whether the particular effect, resolution, hardware-acceleration feature, or delivery option you need is included in the free edition. Do not assume that a tutorial using Studio features describes a free workflow.

Pick Resolve/Fusion when: editing, color, audio, compositing, tracking, keying, and delivery all matter. It is less attractive if you want a small, design-focused 2D animation tool with a layer-based interface and no surrounding NLE workflow.

3. Natron: the best dedicated open-source compositor

Natron is a free, open-source, cross-platform compositor designed for node-based VFX work. The project describes it as comparable in functionality to applications such as After Effects, Nuke, and Fusion, but its strongest identity is as a dedicated compositor rather than an all-purpose motion-design suite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its documented capabilities include:

  • A node graph for building composites.
  • 32-bit floating-point image processing and OpenColorIO color-management support.
  • OpenFX plugin support.
  • Rotoscoping, rotopainting, keyframes, a curve editor, and a dope sheet.
  • Tracking and keying tools.
  • Multi-channel OpenEXR compositing.
  • Python scripting, command-line rendering, and render-farm workflows.

Those features make Natron appealing for compositors working with image sequences, EXR passes, green-screen footage, masks, tracked elements, and scripted or repeatable pipelines. It can be a good fit when you want the compositing stage separated from editing and do not need a large library of integrated design, audio, or color tools.

The important Natron caveat

The Natron repository identifies version 2.5.0, released November 26, 2022, as its latest stable release shown in the supplied project information. That does not make the software unusable, but it does mean you should test it against your current operating system, OpenFX plugins, codecs, and delivery requirements before using it on a long or time-sensitive production. Its release cadence and ecosystem appear less active than those of Blender or Resolve.

Pick Natron when: you specifically want open-source node-based compositing, EXR and VFX support, rotoscoping, tracking, scripting, or command-line rendering. It is not the strongest choice for broad 2D motion-design authoring, integrated editing, or a large current ecosystem of tutorials and plugins.

4. Cavalry: the best procedural 2D motion-design tool

Cavalry motion design software is built around procedural 2D animation rather than traditional layer-by-layer keyframing. It is available free for individuals on macOS and Windows. Its feature set emphasizes real-time rendering, procedural rigs, text animation, duplicators, data import, Lottie export, dynamics, falloffs, and data-driven sequences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That approach is particularly effective when the design consists of systems rather than isolated shots. Examples include:

  • Kinetic typography and animated headlines.
  • Infographics and charts that respond to changing data.
  • Repeated shapes, grids, particles, and looping patterns.
  • Responsive layouts that need to adapt to different formats.
  • Generative or parameter-driven social-media graphics.
  • Reusable title and lower-third systems.

Instead of manually duplicating and adjusting dozens of layers, you can create relationships between elements and control the system through parameters. Real-time feedback is valuable for design iteration, especially when the output is primarily flat 2D motion rather than a rendered 3D scene.

Cavalry is not intended to replace a full 3D/VFX pipeline. It is also not available for Linux, and its free access is directed at individuals; enterprise access is handled separately. Check the current terms if you are evaluating it for a team, client, or organization.

Pick Cavalry when: your work centers on 2D motion systems, typography, charts, looping graphics, or data-driven animation. Choose Blender or Resolve/Fusion instead when you need substantial 3D scenes, footage compositing, color finishing, or audio post.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Maxon Autograph: a newer unified 2D/3D option

Maxon Autograph is a newer motion-graphics and VFX/compositing application that combines 2D and 3D capabilities in a unified workspace. Maxon describes it as offering a full 3D environment, GPU-powered operation, responsive aspect design, data-driven projects, multi-format rendering, and third-party OpenFX support.

That combination makes Autograph interesting for designers who want motion graphics, compositing, transitions, and 2D/3D elements in one modern environment. Responsive aspect design is especially relevant when one project must be adapted for multiple formats, such as landscape video, vertical social content, and square placements.

Maxon’s April 15, 2026 release notes state that Autograph is free for anyone with a MyMaxon account. Maxon also announced on May 7, 2026 that team licenses were made free for commercial use. Because this is a newer and evolving product, confirm the current access model, supported operating systems, feature set, and licensing terms before publication or production. Autograph runs on Windows and macOS.

“Free Autograph” does not mean that every effect in the surrounding Maxon or Red Giant ecosystem is free. Third-party OpenFX plugins can have their own licenses, and existing project files may depend on paid components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick Autograph when: you want to explore a current, unified 2D/3D motion-design and compositing workflow and are comfortable adopting software that is less established than Blender or Resolve. For the safest long-term open-source choice, Blender has the more mature position; for editing and finishing, Resolve is the more complete environment.

6. Krita: the best for hand-drawn animation and painted effects

Krita is a free, open-source digital-painting application with animation tools. Its official documentation covers digital painting, animation, concept art, matte painting, textures, and comics. Krita’s animation workflow uses a timeline, raster frames, onion skinning, brushes, and video or GIF export.

Krita is the strongest choice on this list when the visual result depends on drawing rather than procedural or object-based animation. It works well for:

  • Frame-by-frame 2D animation.
  • Hand-painted transitions, particles, smoke, and impact effects.
  • Concept art, storyboards, and visual development.
  • Matte-painting elements and background extensions.
  • Textures and painted assets that will be composited elsewhere.
  • Rotoscope-style or traditionally animated inserts.

Krita’s tablet support and brush engine are central advantages. If you are drawing in Krita or using Blender Grease Pencil, an optional drawing tablet for animation can provide pressure-sensitive strokes and a more natural input method than a mouse. A tablet is not required for all six applications, and it will not replace the need for a compositor or editor; it is most useful for hand-drawn work, painted effects, and pressure-sensitive 2D input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Krita’s own manual makes the important boundary clear: its primary focus is digital painting and animation. It is not designed as a complete substitute for a full compositing and motion-graphics package. A practical pipeline is to create painted frames or assets in Krita and then composite, track, grade, or edit them in Blender, Natron, Resolve/Fusion, or another finishing tool.

Pick Krita when: the animation is hand-drawn, raster-based, or painterly. Do not choose it as your only application for complex multi-layer compositing, 3D tracking, node-based VFX, or a full video post-production workflow.

Which one is closest to After Effects?

The answer changes according to the job:

If your After Effects work is mainly… Start with… Why
3D titles, product animation, simulations, or tracked 3D elements Blender It combines 3D creation, animation, tracking, rendering, compositing, and VFX.
Video editing with occasional effects, titles, keys, and tracking Resolve/Fusion Editing, Fusion compositing, color, audio, and delivery are integrated.
Rotoscoping, EXR compositing, keying, and scripted VFX Natron It is focused on node-based compositing and supports OpenEXR, OpenFX, Python, and command-line rendering.
Infographics, kinetic type, repeated elements, or responsive 2D systems Cavalry Procedural rigs, duplicators, data import, dynamics, falloffs, and real-time design suit system-based animation.
Modern 2D/3D motion design with responsive formats Autograph It combines a 3D environment, compositing, GPU operation, data-driven projects, and multi-format rendering.
Hand-drawn frames, painted effects, or matte-painting assets Krita Its raster animation, brushes, onion skinning, and painting tools are the best fit.

Free software does not mean identical production costs

The applications themselves may be free, but a production can still involve storage, render time, plugins, codecs, fonts, stock assets, and hardware. Pay attention to these differences before switching a live project:

  • Resolve: distinguish the free edition from Resolve Studio. A tutorial or template may rely on features that are not included without the Studio license.
  • Cavalry: free access is for individuals, while enterprise arrangements are separate. It is also limited to Windows and macOS.
  • Autograph: a MyMaxon account is part of the stated free-access model, but plugins and effects can remain separately licensed. Team and commercial terms should be rechecked because the product is evolving.
  • Natron: test the older stable release with your operating system and plugins before depending on it for a long production.
  • Open-source applications: the application license does not automatically grant rights to every plugin, font, model, texture, stock clip, or downloaded asset used in a project.

Performance and troubleshooting before you blame the software

Motion graphics and VFX are demanding because they combine high-resolution images, cached frames, effects, 3D rendering, and sometimes large source footage. If a free application feels slow, first identify the bottleneck instead of assuming that changing applications will solve it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check available disk space, particularly on the drive used for media and cache files.
  2. Close unnecessary applications and browser tabs that compete for memory or CPU time.
  3. Use proxies, optimized media, preview-resolution settings, or smaller test renders when working with large footage.
  4. Update the graphics driver and verify that the application supports your GPU and operating-system version.
  5. Test third-party plugins and codecs separately; one incompatible plugin can make an otherwise stable project fail.
  6. Keep original footage and project files backed up before clearing caches or changing application versions.

After the render: distributing motion-graphics loops

None of the six applications is a streaming service. If you create original motion-graphics loops, tutorials, visualizers, or other rights-cleared videos and want to run them continuously on YouTube Live, StreamNeo for 24/7 YouTube Live is a separate distribution option. StreamNeo states that it uploads prerecorded video, loops it in the cloud, supports YouTube Live, provides auto-recovery, and removes the need to keep a local computer or OBS running.

This is a post-production and distribution use case, not a replacement for Blender, Resolve, Natron, Cavalry, Autograph, or Krita. Only stream material you created or have permission to broadcast, including music, stock footage, artwork, and client material.

Recommended free workflows

For a painter or illustrator moving into animation

Start with Krita for frame-by-frame animation, painted effects, textures, and storyboards. Add a drawing tablet if pressure-sensitive input is important. Move finished assets into Resolve or Blender when you need compositing, camera movement, editing, or final delivery.

For a YouTube creator

Use Resolve for editing and finishing, then use Fusion for titles, masks, keying, tracking, and effects. This minimizes round-tripping between applications and keeps color, audio, and export in the same project.

For a 3D motion designer

Use Blender for modeling, animation, camera work, simulation, rendering, and compositing. Grease Pencil can cover 2D elements inside the same 3D scene when a hybrid look is useful.

For a motion-graphics designer building reusable systems

Try Cavalry for procedural typography, data-driven charts, repeated forms, responsive layouts, and looping graphics. Use Resolve afterward if the work needs editing, color, audio, or delivery around filmed footage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a compositing specialist

Test Natron with representative footage, EXR sequences, OpenFX plugins, color-management settings, and the operating systems used by your team. Its node-based workflow and scripting support can be valuable, but compatibility testing is especially important because the latest stable release shown in the project information is from 2022.

Bottom line

For the broadest free replacement, choose Blender. For an editing-centered production pipeline, choose DaVinci Resolve with Fusion. For open-source compositing, choose Natron; for procedural 2D motion, choose Cavalry; for a newer unified 2D/3D tool, evaluate Maxon Autograph; and for hand-drawn or painterly animation, choose Krita. The most accurate replacement for After Effects may be a combination of two of them rather than a single application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a completely free one-to-one replacement for After Effects?

No. After Effects combines layer-based compositing, animation, tracking, effects, and motion graphics in one application. Blender, Resolve/Fusion, Natron, Cavalry, Autograph, and Krita replace different parts of that workflow. Blender is the broadest single alternative, while Krita and Cavalry are specialist tools for painted and procedural 2D work.

Which free After Effects alternative is best for 3D and VFX?

Blender is the best starting point for 3D titles, simulations, camera tracking, product animation, and VFX. DaVinci Resolve with Fusion is more practical when you also need editing, color, audio, and delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the best free option for 2D motion graphics?

Use Cavalry for procedural typography, repeated shapes, data-driven graphics, and responsive 2D systems. Use Krita for frame-by-frame, hand-drawn, raster, or painterly animation. Resolve/Fusion is the better general option when the animation is part of a filmed-video edit.

Which alternative is best for drawing and hand-drawn animation?

Krita is the strongest choice for hand-drawn animation and painted effects. Blender Grease Pencil is useful when you want 2D drawing and animation inside a 3D scene. A pressure-sensitive tablet is optional but helpful for both types of work.

Are all features and plugins free in these After Effects alternatives?

Resolve’s free edition includes Fusion, but some advanced capabilities are reserved for DaVinci Resolve Studio. Cavalry’s free access is for individuals, Autograph’s plugins may require separate licenses, and Natron should be tested carefully with current systems and plugins before a long production.

The Bottom Line

Best overall: Blender. Best for editing plus VFX: DaVinci Resolve/Fusion. Best for hand-drawn animation: Krita. Choose by the task you need to replace, because none of these applications is a complete one-to-one After Effects clone.
