Short answer: Some tattoo and permanent-makeup inks tested by the FDA contained bacteria, and three Bloodline pigments distributed through Amazon were recalled in 2024 after testing found high concentrations of microorganisms. The evidence does not show that all tattoo ink on Amazon is contaminated or that Amazon manufactured the products.

The FDA found bacterial contamination in some tattoo and permanent-makeup inks sold in the United States, and a separate 2024 recall involved three Bloodline tattoo pigments distributed nationwide through Amazon. That does not mean that every tattoo ink on Amazon is contaminated, that Amazon manufactured the products, or that the FDA tested only Amazon listings.
The strongest evidence comes from two different FDA actions: a market study of 75 commercial inks and a recall of specific Bloodline colors and manufacturing lots. Together, they show a real and recurring contamination risk—but not proof that every bottle, seller, or customer was exposed.
What the FDA actually found
| Evidence | What was tested or recalled | Main finding |
|---|---|---|
| FDA-authored study published July 2, 2024 | 75 commercial tattoo and permanent-makeup inks from 14 manufacturers | 26 samples—about 35%—contained bacteria |
| Sierra Stain recall announced August 24, 2024 | Three Bloodline water-based tattoo pigments distributed through Amazon | FDA testing found high concentrations of microorganisms in the named products and lots |
These are related findings, but they are not the same investigation. The study was a broader sample of products available on the U.S. market. The recall was focused on three named pigments sold through Amazon, among other details specified in the FDA notice.
The 2024 study: 26 of 75 inks contained bacteria
Researchers examined 40 tattoo inks and 35 permanent-makeup inks from 14 manufacturers. Bacteria were detected in 26 of the 75 samples, or approximately 35% overall.
- Tattoo inks: 9 of 40 samples contained bacteria, which is 22.5% of that sample.
- Permanent-makeup inks: 17 of 35 samples contained bacteria, or approximately 49%.
The products were commercial inks available on the U.S. market; the study was not an audit of Amazon’s entire tattoo-ink catalog. The researchers also did not establish that every contaminated sample caused illness. Finding bacteria in a bottle demonstrates contamination, not a confirmed infection in a person.
Why the study looked for anaerobic bacteria
Earlier testing often focused on aerobic organisms—bacteria that grow in the presence of oxygen. The 2024 study also tested for anaerobic bacteria, which can grow without oxygen. That distinction matters because tattoo ink is injected into the dermal layer, where conditions are different from those on the skin’s surface.

The researchers identified 34 bacterial types across the tested samples. The organisms were not all equally dangerous, but some were opportunistic or potentially pathogenic. Examples included Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Other organisms may sound unusual to a consumer because they are not common household names, but “weird” or “rare” is not a formal measure of how dangerous a bacterium is.
The responsible conclusion is that some commercial inks contained bacteria—including organisms of potential clinical concern—and that both aerobic and anaerobic contamination need to be monitored. It is not that every bacterium found was deadly or that every contaminated bottle will make someone sick.

The separate Sierra Stain recall covered Bloodline water-based tattoo pigments distributed to all 50 states through Amazon. The FDA named these products and lots:
| Product | Batch and lot | Manufacturing information | Microorganisms reported by FDA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carolina Blue | Batch 1, lot BL23 | Manufactured July 1, 2023 | Citrobacter braakii, Citrobacter farmer, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Achromobacter xylosoxidans, Ochrobactrum anthropi as listed by FDA, and Cupriavidus pauculus |
| All Purpose Black | Batch 1, lot BL23 | Manufactured July 1, 2023 | Acetobacter senegalensis |
| UV China Pink | Batch 1, lot SC23 | Lot-specific information in the FDA recall notice | Curtobacterium citreum/pusillum |
If you have one of these products or lots, do not use it. Set it aside in its original container, avoid distributing it, and compare the label with the details in the FDA recall notice. The notice reported that no illnesses had been reported at the time of the recall, but warned that contaminated ink can cause infections, rashes, lesions, scarring, and other serious injuries when injected into the skin.
The FDA notice also stated that Sierra Stain LLC and Bloodline inks were no longer in business and were not manufacturing tattoo-ink products when the recall was issued. Do not interpret an old marketplace listing, an old review, or a product’s disappearance as evidence that an affected product was safe. At the same time, do not expand this recall to every tattoo-ink listing on Amazon: the recall concerned the named products and lots.
Why “sterile” on the bottle is not an absolute guarantee
In the 2024 study, nine manufacturers labeled 49 of the 75 products as sterile. Bacteria were nevertheless detected in some products carrying those claims. The researchers found no clear association between a sterility claim and the actual absence of bacterial contamination.

- MADE IN THE USA SINCE 1990 — For over 30 years Dynamic Color has produced professional tattoo ink in the United States, an established American brand artists built their work on long before most imported labels existed.

That does not prove that every sterility label is fraudulent. It shows that a printed claim is not a substitute for validated manufacturing controls, suitable testing, and traceability. A sealed bottle also cannot undo contamination that occurred during manufacturing, filling, storage, or distribution.
There are additional ways contamination can enter the process. FDA identifies contaminated ink, nonsterile equipment, poor hygiene, and unsafe dilution practices as possible sources of infection. A professional studio can reduce some of those risks, but a professional setting cannot make a recalled or contaminated ink safe.
“High levels” does not mean every Amazon tattoo ink is dangerous
The phrase “tattoo ink sold on Amazon has high levels of weird and rare bacteria” combines two true but separate ideas: the FDA found high concentrations of microorganisms in the recalled Bloodline pigments, and the broader FDA study found bacterial contamination in a substantial minority of sampled inks.
It would be inaccurate to turn those findings into any of these claims:
- “All tattoo ink on Amazon is contaminated.” The evidence does not support that.
- “Amazon made or formulated the ink.” Amazon was identified as a distribution channel for the recalled products.
- “The FDA tested only Amazon products.” The 75-product study covered commercial inks available on the U.S. market, not just Amazon listings.
- “Every bacterium found was deadly.” The organisms varied, and species detection is not the same as a confirmed disease outbreak.
- “The study proved Amazon customers became infected.” The study detected bacteria in ink; it did not trace infections to Amazon customers.
- “A sterile label is always fraudulent.” The finding was that the label was not a reliable guarantee of uncontaminated contents.
This is a recurring quality-control problem, not an isolated headline
The 2024 findings fit earlier FDA research. In one survey, FDA researchers examined 85 unopened tattoo and permanent-makeup inks from 13 U.S. manufacturers and found contamination in 42 samples, or 49%.
A follow-up study of 21 inks found contamination in 11 samples, or 52%. That study identified 25 bacterial strains across nine genera and 19 species. In one sample, contamination reached 3.6 × 108 colony-forming units per gram. A colony-forming unit, or CFU, is a laboratory measure used to estimate viable microorganisms; this figure came from the earlier follow-up research, not from the three Bloodline products in the 2024 recall.

Another FDA-linked review of U.S. voluntary recalls from 2003 through 2021 identified 15 tattoo-ink recalls involving more than 200 products. Fourteen of those recalls were associated with microbial contamination. In a later survey of 28 products from manufacturers with previous recall histories, six inks were contaminated.
FDA’s October 24, 2024 update reported 18 voluntary recalls of tattoo inks contaminated with microorganisms between 2003 and 2024. The different totals should not be treated as contradictory rates: the reviews covered different time periods, datasets, and counting methods. The consistent point is that microbial contamination has repeatedly led to recalls.

Before getting tattooed
- Choose a professional studio. FDA advises against home tattooing, which introduces additional risks involving cleanliness, equipment, dilution, and handling.
- Ask which ink will be used. Request the manufacturer, product name, color, lot or batch number, and expiration information when available.
- Check FDA safety notices and recalls. Do not use a product named in a recall, even if the container is unopened or marked sterile. The Sierra Stain notice is the relevant source for the Bloodline products described above.
- Ask how the studio prevents contamination. The artist should be able to explain its hygiene procedures, equipment handling, and how ink is dispensed and diluted, if dilution is part of the process.
- Do not treat marketplace convenience as safety verification. A listing, customer rating, fast shipping badge, or intact seal does not independently validate sterility.
If you are an apprentice or only need to practice technique
Do not practice by injecting ink into yourself or another untrained person. For non-injection line and shading practice, tattoo practice skin can be a more appropriate training material than human skin. Practice skin does not make home tattooing safe, does not validate an ink, and is not a substitute for supervised professional training.
If you already received a tattoo
Do not assume that you are infected simply because a particular ink was mentioned in a news story. However, pay attention to unusual or persistent changes. FDA describes tattoo-ink infections as potentially involving a rash or red papules confined to the tattooed area; some infections can lead to permanent scarring, and early signs may resemble an allergic reaction.
If you develop a concerning rash or other unusual symptoms, contact a healthcare professional rather than trying to diagnose the cause from an online article. Tell the clinician when and where the tattoo was done, the ink brand and color if known, and provide the lot information or a photograph of the container if you have it. You can also report a suspected adverse event through the FDA consumer safety information linked in its tattoo-ink advisory.
What FDA guidance now expects from manufacturers
FDA regulates tattoo inks and pigments as cosmetics in the United States, while state and local authorities generally oversee tattooing practices and studios. This split means a compliant studio cannot compensate for poor manufacturing controls, and a well-made product cannot compensate for unsafe studio practices.

In October 2024, FDA issued final guidance on insanitary conditions in the preparation, packing, and holding of tattoo inks. The guidance recommends that firms:
- test inks and relevant components for microbial contamination;
- prevent contamination during preparation, packing, storage, and handling;
- use appropriate sterilization methods where applicable; and
- take corrective action before contaminated products reach consumers.
The FDA’s final tattoo-ink guidance is the best source for manufacturers and professionals who need the regulatory details. FDA’s later update also noted that recalls and safety notices can change, so consumers should consult current FDA recall information rather than rely permanently on a 2024 list.
The practical takeaway
The evidence supports caution, not panic. Some commercial tattoo and permanent-makeup inks contained bacteria in FDA testing, some products labeled sterile still tested positive, and three named Bloodline pigments distributed through Amazon were recalled after FDA found high concentrations of microorganisms.
For consumers, the sensible response is to avoid recalled products, ask a professional artist about the exact ink and lot being used, and seek medical advice for a suspicious reaction. For artists and manufacturers, the lesson is stricter microbial testing and contamination control—not simply printing the word “sterile” on a bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this mean all tattoo ink sold on Amazon is contaminated?
No. The FDA’s 2024 study tested 75 commercial tattoo and permanent-makeup inks from 14 manufacturers available on the U.S. market; it was not a test of every Amazon listing. A separate recall involved three named Bloodline pigments and specific lots distributed nationwide through Amazon.
Can I trust a tattoo-ink bottle labeled sterile?
Not reliably. In the 2024 study, some products labeled sterile still contained bacteria, and the researchers found no clear association between a sterility claim and the absence of contamination. Sterile labeling should not replace validated manufacturing controls and testing.
What should I do if my tattoo develops an unusual rash?
A rash or red papules limited to the tattooed area can be associated with a tattoo-ink infection, and early symptoms may resemble an allergic reaction. These signs do not establish a diagnosis. Contact a healthcare professional if you notice a concerning or unusual reaction, and provide the ink brand, color, lot, and tattoo date if available.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The FDA did not find that all Amazon tattoo ink is contaminated. It found bacteria in 26 of 75 sampled U.S. products and separately recalled three Bloodline pigments distributed through Amazon. Check the exact brand and lot, use a professional studio, and treat unusual post-tattoo symptoms as a reason to contact a healthcare professional.
