Affinity’s six-month free trial is history—the Adobe alternative is now free for everyone. The original July 2024 promotion gave users 180 days with Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher. Canva’s October 2025 relaunch changed the picture: Affinity is now a unified application for vector design, pixel/photo editing, and page layout, while some Canva-connected and AI features remain account-dependent.
Affinity is no longer merely a six-month free trial. The promotion behind the original headline was a July 2024, 180-day trial of Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher for Mac, Windows, and iPad. That offer was temporary and did not turn the older V2 licenses into permanently free software.
The important update is what happened afterward: Canva announced on October 29, 2025, that it had rebuilt Affinity as a single professional design application and made the core app free for everyone. In other words, the six-month offer is history; the current Affinity model is broader and, according to Canva, free to use rather than limited to a trial period.
What the 2024 six-month offer included

Contemporary reporting described the promotion as a 180-day trial available on Mac, Windows, and iPad, with no obligation to purchase at the end. That distinction matters. “Free for six months” meant temporary access to the V2 applications—not a six-month perpetual license and not proof that the previous paid licenses had been abandoned.
Why the old headline is now outdated
Canva acquired Affinity’s owner and later announced a major change to both the product and its business model. On October 29, 2025, Canva introduced an all-new Affinity that brings vector design, pixel/photo editing, and page layout into one application and described it as completely free for everyone.
Canva says a user can create a free Canva account and download the application. The new structure is different from the V2 arrangement, where Designer, Photo, and Publisher were separate applications. Instead of switching among three standalone programs, users can work with vector, pixel, and layout tools in a unified workspace. Canva also describes customizable studios and a high-performance workflow aimed at professional users.

- Vector work: logos, illustrations, symbols, icons, interface graphics, and scalable print artwork.
- Pixel and photo work: retouching, selections, compositing, image adjustments, and raster painting.
- Layout work: brochures, books, magazines, posters, and other multi-page print or digital projects.
That combination is especially relevant to independent designers, illustrators, photographers, publishers, students, educators, nonprofits, and small creative teams. A person creating a painted illustration may use vector tools for clean shapes, pixel tools for texture and brushwork, and layout tools to place the finished artwork in a book, portfolio, or printable publication.
Canva also says users can export Affinity projects into Canva for collaboration, publishing, and scaling. An April 2026 Affinity update announced Canva Brand System integration, connections for Capture One and DaVinci Resolve file workflows, and an AI Connector for Claude, which was free during its beta period. These ecosystem features can be useful for people who move from making artwork to preparing it for a team, campaign, publication, or video workflow, but they should not be confused with the basic Affinity application itself.
Free Affinity does not mean every Canva feature is free
The most important qualification is the difference between the free Affinity core and optional connected services.
Canva says the core creative application is free and that its wider business model can monetize advanced collaboration, premium content, and AI-powered capabilities separately. Canva AI Studio is integrated into Affinity, and official Affinity learning material describes features such as smart selections, generative edits, and custom image creation. Canva’s product announcement also says Canva premium-account users receive Canva AI tools inside Affinity.
Access may therefore depend on the Canva account, the particular AI feature, or a beta/service condition. Do not assume that every Canva AI capability is included simply because Affinity itself is free. If you are evaluating Affinity to avoid a subscription, check which tools are part of the free application and which require a Canva plan or separate service access.

Canva additionally says that Affinity stores work locally on the device and that Canva does not use Affinity content to train or develop its AI features—including content created with Canva AI tools inside Affinity. Those are Canva’s stated policies and should be treated as company claims rather than independently audited findings.

Is Affinity a complete Adobe replacement?
It is a credible alternative for many Illustrator-, Photoshop-, and InDesign-style tasks, but “complete Adobe replacement” is too broad. The strongest defensible comparison is functional overlap: Affinity combines vector design, photo editing, and page layout, while Adobe distributes comparable flagship capabilities across separate applications.
That does not establish feature-for-feature parity, identical workflows, complete Adobe file compatibility, or suitability for every professional and enterprise environment. Before migrating a working studio, check the details that affect your projects:
- Whether your existing Adobe documents open with the layers, effects, text, and linked assets intact.
- Whether clients, printers, publishers, or colleagues require a particular Adobe file format.
- Whether your workflow depends on Adobe-specific font handling, asset management, automation, or collaboration.
- Whether you need applications outside Affinity’s core scope, such as video editing, motion graphics, Lightroom-style photo cataloguing, or enterprise publishing workflows.
- Whether your operating system and hardware meet the current application requirements.
Affinity’s announced scope makes it a strong candidate for illustration, painting, image compositing, page design, and mixed print projects. It does not by itself replace every product in the Adobe ecosystem.
What this means for painters and illustrators
For digital painters, the free core application removes the biggest barrier to testing Affinity’s pixel-based tools. For illustrators, the unified workspace makes it possible to combine scalable vector shapes with raster brushwork and image editing in one project. For artists preparing a book, zine, exhibition catalogue, or print portfolio, the layout tools cover the next stage without requiring a separate page-design application.

A drawing tablet is useful—but not required. Pressure-sensitive input can make brushwork, masking, line control, and repeated illustration tasks more natural than using a mouse. If you are shopping specifically for a drawing tablet for Affinity Designer, choose based on pressure control, active area, pen comfort, operating-system support, and desk space rather than assuming Affinity requires a particular brand.

Canva’s October 2025 launch announcement identified Mac and Windows availability and said iPad support was coming. Because platform availability can change after a product launch, do not rely on the old 2024 statement that Affinity was available on iPad when describing the current unified app. Check the live official Affinity download page immediately before publication or installation for the current iPad status and system requirements.

During the V2 era, Canva offered a dedicated access route for eligible Canva for Education and Canva for Nonprofits accounts. Eligibility, country availability, and exclusions for optional add-ons applied. That program is now mainly historical context because Canva says the general Affinity application is free for everyone. Institutions should still verify their Canva account eligibility if they need education, nonprofit, collaboration, or premium Canva services in addition to the Affinity app.

Should you try Affinity now?
- Try it if you want professional-style vector, pixel, and layout tools without paying for the core application.
- Try it if you are an independent artist, student, small team, or hobbyist who finds three separate Adobe subscriptions excessive.
- Test a real project, not just a demo file. Open a representative illustration, photo composite, or multi-page document and inspect text, layers, effects, colour, exports, and print output.
- Check your collaboration needs. Canva export and connected services may help teams, but they do not automatically reproduce every Adobe enterprise workflow.
- Separate the free app from optional AI and premium Canva features. Decide whether those extras matter before comparing total costs.
The short version is simple: the July 2024 six-month trial is no longer the current deal. After Canva’s 2025 relaunch, Affinity became a unified design application that Canva says is free for everyone, with additional Canva-connected and AI features subject to their own access conditions.
