An art medium is the material, process, or combination of materials an artist uses to make a work. Oil paint, graphite, watercolor, bronze, photography, weaving, digital software, and performance are all examples. The categories overlap, so a contemporary artwork may be a painting, sculpture, installation, and mixed-media work at the same time.

An art medium is the material, process, or combination of materials an artist uses to make a work. Oil paint, graphite, watercolor, bronze, photography, weaving, digital software, and performance are all examples of mediums. A museum description may identify both the broad category and the precise construction—for example, painting: oil on canvas, drawing: graphite on paper, or print: color lithograph on paper.

There is no single universal list of art mediums. Categories overlap, and contemporary artists routinely combine paint, objects, photography, textiles, sound, software, and architectural space. The most useful way to understand mediums is to ask what physical or technical process produced the work, what properties that process creates, and what limitations it imposes.

Medium, material, technique, subject, and style: what is the difference?

These terms are related but not interchangeable:

  • Medium: the broad material or process used to create the artwork, such as painting, sculpture, photography, or printmaking.
  • Material: the specific substance used, such as oil paint, linen, clay, bronze, thread, or photographic paper.
  • Technique: the method used to handle the material, such as glazing, etching, casting, weaving, collage, or crosshatching.
  • Subject: what the artwork depicts or addresses, such as a landscape, portrait, political event, or personal memory.
  • Style: how the work looks or communicates, such as realism, abstraction, minimalism, or expressionism.

For example, a landscape is a subject, not a medium. It can be rendered in watercolor, oil, acrylic, photography, printmaking, or digital art. Similarly, realism and abstraction are approaches that can appear in nearly any medium.

The word medium also has a narrower meaning in painting. An oil or acrylic medium is an additive—such as a binder, gel, oil, retarder, or flow aid—that changes how paint handles, dries, or appears. That meaning is different from saying that oil painting or acrylic painting is the artwork’s medium.

The main types of art mediums

1. Drawing mediums

Drawing is usually built from line, mark, tone, and sometimes wash on a surface, most commonly paper. It may be a finished artwork or a preparatory stage for painting, sculpture, printmaking, architecture, tapestry, or stained glass.

Common drawing mediums include:

  • Graphite: Available as pencils, sticks, or powder. It provides precise lines, controlled shading, subtle value changes, and easy correction through erasing.
  • Charcoal: Produces broad expressive marks, deep blacks, and soft atmospheric transitions. It is relatively fragile and may need a fixative to reduce smudging.
  • Colored pencil: Wax- or oil-based cores can be layered gradually for detailed, controlled color and precise edges.
  • Pastel: Dry pigment produces direct, saturated marks. Soft pastels are powdery and blendable; hard pastels and pastel pencils are better for detail. Oil pastel contains a non-drying oil-and-wax binder and behaves differently from soft pastel.
  • Ink: Liquid ink can be applied with a pen, nib, brush, reed, or technical instrument. It supports crisp lines, washes, calligraphy, staining, and strong graphic contrast.
  • Chalk and conté crayon: Dense, relatively opaque materials useful for linear work, tonal studies, and modeling form.
  • Metalpoint: A silver or other metal stylus makes delicate lines on a specially prepared surface. The marks are fine and controlled, but the technique is less forgiving than graphite.

Drawing techniques include contour drawing, gesture drawing, hatching, crosshatching, scribbling, tonal modeling, and varying pressure to change the width or darkness of a mark.

2. Painting mediums

Painting applies colored material to a support such as canvas, wood panel, paper, wall, fabric, board, or an object. Paint generally contains pigment or dye combined with a binder or vehicle. That binder affects how the paint flows, adheres, dries, reflects light, and ages.

Oil paint

Oil paint suspends pigment in a drying oil, commonly linseed oil, although safflower, walnut, and other oils are also used. It dries relatively slowly, giving artists time to blend, revise, soften edges, and build layered surfaces. That working time is its major advantage, but it also means that paintings require planning around drying periods. Solvents and other painting materials require appropriate ventilation and careful handling.

Acrylic paint

Acrylic paint uses pigment in an acrylic polymer binder. It usually dries faster than oil and can be applied as a thin wash, a detailed layer, or thick impasto. Acrylic gels, pastes, retarders, and flow aids can alter its transparency, texture, drying time, and movement. Acrylic is especially versatile for murals, collage, mixed media, illustration, and experimental surfaces.

Watercolor

Watercolor is generally a transparent, water-based paint made from pigment and a binder such as gum arabic. Artists often allow the white of the paper to provide the lightest values rather than covering those areas with white paint. Watercolor dries quickly, can often be re-wetted, and is well suited to washes, transparent layering, travel, illustration, and observational studies.

Gouache

Traditional artist gouache is an opaque, water-based paint related to watercolor. It creates matte, solid passages and can generally be re-wetted after drying. Acrylic gouache is a different formulation: it dries to a matte surface but is generally not re-wettable. The two may look similar while behaving differently on the palette and the painting surface.

Tempera

Tempera is a broad term for paint made with a water-based binder. Egg tempera uses an egg-based binder and has a long history in European painting. Modern products labeled tempera may use other formulations. Tempera is associated with precise, layered, relatively matte surfaces.

Encaustic or wax painting

Encaustic painting suspends pigment in heated wax, commonly beeswax. Artists can brush, fuse, scrape, incise, or build the wax into textured layers. Because the material is heat-sensitive, encaustic work requires equipment and safe studio practices that are different from those used for water-based paints.

Fresco and mural painting

Fresco is a wall-painting process. In traditional buon fresco, pigment is applied to fresh, wet plaster and becomes integrated with the drying surface. Mural is the broader category: a mural may use fresco, acrylic, oil, or another material on a wall or architectural surface.

Ink and fluid color

Ink can function as either a drawing or painting medium. It may be used for line, washes, calligraphy, illustration, staining, or experimental color fields. Acrylic ink combines fluid handling with an acrylic binder and can be used on paper, panels, and other suitably prepared surfaces.

3. Printmaking mediums

Printmaking creates an image by transferring ink from a matrix—a prepared surface or template—to paper, fabric, or another support. The matrix may be wood, metal, stone, glass, or another material. Many printmaking processes allow one matrix to produce multiple impressions, while a monotype is generally intended to produce one primary or nearly unique print.

The major printmaking categories are:

  • Relief printing: Ink is applied to the raised areas of a block. Woodcut and linocut are common examples. The artist cuts away the areas that should remain unprinted.
  • Intaglio: Ink is held in recessed lines or areas below the surface of a plate. Engraving cuts directly into metal; etching uses acid to bite lines; drypoint scratches the plate with a sharp tool; aquatint creates tonal areas.
  • Planographic printing: Lithography uses the resistance between grease and water on a flat stone or metal plate. Greasy drawn areas accept ink while damp areas repel it.
  • Screenprinting: Ink or paint is pushed through a mesh screen, with a stencil blocking selected areas. It is also called serigraphy or silkscreen.
  • Monotype: The artist paints or inks a smooth plate and transfers the image, usually producing one main impression.
  • Collagraph: Paper, fabric, string, or other textures are attached to a plate, which is then inked and printed.
  • Digital and photographic printmaking: Digital files, photographs, or scanned marks can become physical prints through inkjet, laser, or other output processes.

Printmaking is both a medium and a family of techniques. Etching names a process, while print describes the resulting object more broadly. A useful description therefore gives both where possible, such as “etching on paper” or “color lithograph on paper.”

4. Sculpture and three-dimensional mediums

Sculpture is three-dimensional art made by modeling, carving, constructing, assembling, casting, or otherwise shaping materials in space. Instead of relying only on a flat image, sculpture engages volume, surface, weight, balance, scale, and the viewer’s movement around or through the work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important sculptural materials and processes include:

  • Stone: Marble, granite, limestone, soapstone, and other stones may be carved, polished, drilled, or combined with other materials.
  • Wood: Wood may be carved, assembled, burned, painted, or used as a found object.
  • Clay: Clay can be modeled, coiled, slab-built, wheel-thrown, textured, dried, and fired. It may remain unglazed or receive a glaze.
  • Metal: Bronze, steel, aluminum, iron, copper, and other metals can be forged, cut, welded, fabricated, or cast.
  • Plaster and cement: These materials are used for modeling, casting, architectural forms, and constructed surfaces.
  • Wax: Wax is used as both a finished material and a modeling material for processes such as lost-wax casting.
  • Glass: Glass may be blown, cast, slumped, fused, engraved, or assembled.
  • Found objects and assemblage: Existing objects are combined, altered, or repositioned to make a new work.
  • Plastic, foam, resin, and synthetic materials: These are common in contemporary fabrication, molding, casting, installation, and large-scale construction.

Sculpture may be representational, abstract, kinetic, architectural, environmental, or participatory. It may also overlap with painting. Robert Rauschenberg’s “Combine” works, for example, are often discussed as painting-sculpture hybrids because they combine painted surfaces with ordinary objects and found images.

5. Ceramics and clay

Ceramics is based on clay and other mineral materials that are shaped and usually fired. Processes include handbuilding, coiling, slab construction, wheel throwing, slip casting, carving, burnishing, glazing, and kiln firing.

Ceramic art may be functional, sculptural, architectural, or decorative. It overlaps with sculpture, but the terms emphasize different information: sculpture identifies a three-dimensional art category, while ceramic identifies a clay-based, firing-related material and process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Glazes can add color, gloss, opacity, texture, and a protective surface. Ceramic traditions include earthenware, stoneware, porcelain, lusterware, and many regional bodies and surface treatments. Firing is a decisive part of the process: it permanently changes the clay and can also introduce risks such as cracking, warping, or glaze failure.

6. Photography

Photography creates images through light-sensitive chemical or electronic processes. Traditional photography may use film, photographic paper, lenses, darkroom chemistry, photograms, or alternative photographic processes. Digital photography uses an electronic sensor and produces a digital file that can remain screen-based or become a physical print.

Photography can be documentary, staged, conceptual, abstract, experimental, or combined with painting, collage, installation, or sculpture. The photograph’s material construction matters: film, paper, emulsion, ink, mounting, digital file, display screen, and printing process can all affect how the work is understood and preserved.

A documentation photograph of a performance or installation is not necessarily the same artwork as the original event or spatial experience. The image may record the work without replacing it.

7. Collage, assemblage, and mixed media

Collage combines relatively flat elements—such as paper, photographs, printed matter, tickets, or fabric—on a support. Assemblage generally combines three-dimensional objects. Mixed media is the broadest term and describes a work made from two or more distinct materials or processes.

A mixed-media work might combine acrylic paint, ink, paper, fabric, modeling paste, photographs, and found objects. The important feature is not merely the number of supplies listed, but the interaction among them. Artists may use differences in texture, absorbency, transparency, scale, permanence, or cultural association as part of the work’s meaning and appearance.

Gesso, acrylic gel, and modeling paste can help prepare surfaces, attach collage elements, or build texture, but compatibility matters. A material that dries rigid, oily, flexible, absorbent, or water-sensitive may not behave well when layered indiscriminately with another.

8. Fiber and textile art

Fiber art uses thread, yarn, fabric, paper fiber, rope, felt, and related materials. Techniques include weaving, sewing, embroidery, quilting, knitting, knotting, lace-making, basketry, tapestry, appliqué, felting, and fiber sculpture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Textile works may be wearable, functional, wall-based, sculptural, architectural, or installation-based. Fiber can emphasize softness, repetition, pattern, labor, touch, drape, and physical scale. Contemporary institutions increasingly treat textiles as fine-art media rather than limiting them to a craft category. A work might combine silk-wrapped paper, wool, cotton, and linen, for example.

9. Glass, metalwork, jewelry, and decorative-art mediums

Glass art includes blowing, casting, fusing, slumping, engraving, staining, and kilnforming. Metalwork includes forging, casting, repoussé, chasing, engraving, welding, enameling, and wirework. Jewelry may combine metals with gemstones, glass, ceramic, enamel, fiber, or found objects.

Depending on its purpose and context, an object may be classified as sculpture, craft, decorative art, design, or contemporary art. These labels do not erase the value of identifying the material. Glass and metal have distinctive technical requirements, tools, safety considerations, surface qualities, and preservation needs.

10. Digital art and electronic media

Digital art uses computers, tablets, cameras, software, code, digital files, sensors, networks, or electronically controlled systems. Examples include:

  • networked and software-based works.

A digital artwork may exist as a file, screen-based image, projection, printed object, software environment, interactive experience, or combination of these. “Digital” can therefore describe how a work was made, how it is delivered, or both. Preservation may depend on file formats, software, hardware, interfaces, operating systems, and documentation.

11. Film, video, sound, installation, and time-based media

Film and video art use moving images, sound, editing, performance, projection, and playback. The medium may be film stock, videotape, a digital video file, or a combination of image and sound technologies.

Installation art organizes objects, materials, light, sound, architecture, and viewer movement within a particular space. It may include paintings, sculptures, photographs, textiles, found objects, video, or digital systems. The room, scale, lighting, sequence, and the viewer’s path may all be part of the work.

Sound art treats recorded, electronic, environmental, or performed sound as a primary artistic material. Film, video, installation, and sound works are often time-based, site-specific, interactive, or dependent on a particular exhibition environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Performance and body-based media

Performance art uses the artist’s body, actions, duration, audience, place, objects, sound, and documentation as artistic components. Its medium may be an event or action rather than a permanent object.

Performance can overlap with theater, dance, ritual, social practice, video, installation, and photography. Because the event may be temporary, photographs, video, scripts, objects, or instructions may document or support later presentations. Documentation should not automatically be treated as identical to the original performance.

How to choose an art medium

Choose based on the result you want and the conditions in which you will work—not on the idea that one medium is inherently superior. Consider:

  • Visual result: Do you want transparency, opacity, sharp lines, soft transitions, saturated color, visible texture, or reflective surfaces?
  • Working time: Do you need paint to dry quickly, or do you want several hours or days for blending and revision?
  • Portability: Can you work at a desk, or do you have room for wet paintings, a press, a kiln, or specialized tools?
  • Budget: Include paper, supports, brushes, tools, protective equipment, framing, printing, firing, and storage—not just the primary material.
  • Cleanup and safety: Some media need little cleanup; others involve dust, heat, solvents, sharp tools, fumes, or ventilation.
  • Surface and permanence: The support and the compatibility of layers affect how a work looks and survives.
  • Reproducibility: Printmaking, photography, and digital art can produce multiple outputs, while a drawing, painting, sculpture, or monotype may be unique.
  • Space and participation: Installation, performance, and interactive digital work may depend on a room, audience, equipment, or a specific duration.
If you want… Consider… Important trade-off
Portable, precise studies Graphite or colored pencil Excellent control, but building large areas of rich color can take time
Deep darks and energetic marks Charcoal or soft pastel Immediate, expressive results, but surfaces can smudge
Transparent washes and travel-friendly materials Watercolor Portable and quick, but revisions and light values require planning
Fast-drying versatility Acrylic Works across many approaches, but may dry before extended blending is complete
Slow blending and extended manipulation Oil Long working time, with more demanding drying and studio-safety requirements
Opaque matte shapes Gouache Strong graphic coverage, but traditional and acrylic gouache behave differently
Repeatable graphic images Linocut, screenprinting, or another print process Process and equipment can be more involved than drawing or painting
Tactile three-dimensional work Clay or ceramics Highly physical, but firing requires kiln access
Texture, pattern, and softness Fiber or textiles Flexible and materially rich, but some techniques are labor-intensive
Software-based, reproducible, or interactive images Digital art Flexible output, but hardware, software, and file preservation matter
Space, sound, movement, or participation Installation, film, video, sound, or performance The work may depend on equipment, a site, an audience, or documentation

Why artists combine mediums

Combining mediums is not a failure to choose one. It can be the most accurate way to make an idea visible. Paint may provide color, photographs may introduce evidence or memory, fabric may add bodily or cultural associations, and found objects may bring scale, history, or physical presence.

Hybrid works can also challenge classification. A painted object may be both painting and sculpture; a video installation may include sound, architecture, and performance; a digital image may exist as code, a file, a projection, and a printed edition. Classification depends partly on which aspect—the material, process, object, event, or display condition—is most important in context.

How to describe an artwork’s medium precisely

Start broad, then become specific:

  1. Identify the general category: drawing, painting, sculpture, photograph, print, textile, installation, or another form.
  2. Name the main material: graphite, oil paint, acrylic, clay, bronze, paper, wool, or digital file.
  3. Add the support: paper, canvas, wood panel, wall, fabric, screen, or architectural space.
  4. Name an important process or technique: etching, glazing, casting, weaving, collage, projection, or performance.
  5. For combined works, list the significant materials without implying that the list alone explains the work.

“Painting” is accurate but broad. “Watercolor on paper” tells the reader more. “Color lithograph on paper” identifies both the print category and the process. A mixed-media description might say “acrylic, ink, paper, and fabric on panel,” while an installation may require a description of its objects, sound, lighting, space, and interactive elements.

Is oil a medium or a technique?

Oil paint is a medium. Glazing, impasto, wet-on-wet painting, and scumbling are techniques that can be performed with oil paint. An oil painting may also use several techniques in the same work.

Is watercolor a medium or a style?

Watercolor is a medium. A loose, realistic, botanical, abstract, or illustrative appearance is a style or approach, not the medium itself.

Are ceramics and sculpture the same thing?

No. Ceramics identifies a clay-based material and usually a firing process. Sculpture identifies three-dimensional art more broadly. A ceramic vessel may be functional, decorative, or sculptural, and a sculpture may be made from stone, metal, wood, glass, or many other materials.

What is the difference between mixed media and multimedia?

Mixed media usually describes a single artwork made by combining physical materials or processes, such as paint, paper, and fabric. Multimedia often emphasizes several media systems—such as video, sound, light, software, and objects—especially in an installation or time-based work. The terms overlap, and institutions may use them differently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the medium determine the meaning of an artwork?

No. Materials influence an artwork’s appearance, physical behavior, process, and limitations, but they do not dictate its subject or meaning. Artists can use the same medium for radically different ideas, cultures, styles, and purposes.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Art mediums range from graphite and watercolor to clay, metal, textiles, photography, digital systems, sound, installation, and performance. The best choice depends on the marks, surfaces, time, space, equipment, and viewer experience you want—not on a universal ranking of mediums. When identifying an artwork, be as specific as useful: name the category, material, support, and significant technique.
