Preview cannot directly replace an image’s background with an arbitrary color. It can change the color of its own viewing window or remove an image background. To create a finished image with a new background, save the cutout as a transparent PNG and add the color in an app that supports layers or background shapes.
Preview cannot directly replace an image’s background with a color of your choice. On a Mac, Preview can change the color of its own viewing window, remove an image background to create transparency, and make selections. To produce a saved image with a new colored background, remove the old background in Preview, save the transparent result as a PNG, and place it over a colored canvas in an app that supports layers or background shapes.

First, identify which background you want to change
“Change the background color” can mean three different things in Preview:
- The Preview window canvas: changes only the color surrounding the document on screen. It does not edit or export the image.
- The existing image background: Preview can remove it, leaving transparent areas.
- A finished image with a new color behind the subject: Preview can prepare the transparent subject, but another app is needed to add and save the new background.
Change the color around an image in Preview
If you only want to change the gray area surrounding an image—or the color visible through transparent parts of an image—use Preview’s window setting:
- Open Preview.
- Choose Preview > Settings from the menu bar.
- Select General.
- Click the Window background color well.
- Choose a color.
This is a display setting. It changes Preview’s workspace, not the image pixels. If you close the image and open it in another app, the image will not have the selected background color. The same is true when you export or send the image to someone else.
Make a new colored background for an image
For a saved result—such as a portrait on a white, blue, or transparent background—use Preview to remove the old background, then finish the composition in a layer-capable image or layout app.

Open the image in Preview. If the original matters, choose File > Duplicate before making changes. This is especially important if Preview asks to convert the image to PNG during background removal.
2. Remove the background
- With the image open, choose Image > Remove Background.
- If Preview asks whether to convert the file to PNG, choose Convert if you are working on a duplicate or have another copy of the original.
- Review the result. The removed area should appear transparent, commonly shown as a checkerboard pattern or as the Preview window color showing through.
Preview’s command removes background content; it does not automatically place a replacement color underneath the subject. If the result is not satisfactory, choose Edit > Undo and try again, or use a more precise selection method.

3. Save the transparent version as a PNG
Save or export the cutout as a PNG before adding the new background. PNG preserves transparency, whereas formats that do not support an alpha channel can fill transparent areas with a solid color or otherwise lose the cutout information.
Keep the original file separate from the transparent PNG. The PNG is an intermediate asset; it is not yet the final image with the new background.

4. Add the new color in another app
- Open the transparent PNG in an image-editing or layout application that supports layers, a colored canvas, or background shapes.
- Create a canvas or rectangle filled with the desired color.
- Place the transparent PNG above that color.
- Adjust the subject’s position and size as needed.
- Export the finished composition in the format required for its destination.
For a web graphic or document, PNG is often useful when you need to preserve transparency. For a final image that must always display a solid background, export the completed composition after the color has been placed beneath the subject. The exact export options depend on the application you use.
Can Preview replace a simple background color?
Preview’s Instant Alpha and selection tools can help when the background is nearly uniform and contrasts strongly with the foreground. Instant Alpha removes a selected background color by making that area transparent. Preview also provides rectangular, elliptical, lasso, and smart-lasso selections.
To work manually, select the unwanted area with an appropriate selection tool, remove it, and preserve the result as a PNG. The exact controls can vary with the selection type and image format, so work on a duplicate and undo if the selection cuts into the subject.
This approach works best for backgrounds such as a clean studio color or a plain wall. It is less reliable when the image contains:

- hair, fur, leaves, or other fine edges;
- shadows touching the subject;
- gradients, texture, or uneven lighting;
- foreground and background areas with similar colors; or
- semi-transparent edges such as glass or smoke.
Preview does not turn Instant Alpha into a true “replace this color with blue” command. It removes selected content. You then need to composite the remaining subject over the new color elsewhere.
What if you want to recolor part of the image, not remove it?
If you want to change the color of a wall, sky, shirt, or another region while keeping the background intact, background removal is the wrong operation. Preview’s documented Adjust Color controls can change global properties such as exposure, contrast, saturation, and tint, but they are not a precise selective-color replacement tool.
Apple’s Photos app includes Selective Color controls for changing the hue, saturation, and luminance of a selected color. A dedicated image editor may offer still finer control through selections, masks, adjustment layers, and color replacement. Use one of those tools when the goal is selective recoloring rather than cutting a subject out.

The color changed only around the image
You changed Preview > Settings > General > Window background. That setting affects the viewing canvas and transparent areas visible in Preview; it does not permanently change the file. Use Image > Remove Background, then add a color beneath the resulting PNG in another app for a saved image.

Preview asks to convert the image to PNG
Preview may need PNG’s transparency support for the background-removal workflow. Choose Convert if you have duplicated the original or do not need to preserve the source format. If you need the original unchanged, cancel, duplicate the file, and repeat the operation on the copy.
The edges look rough or parts of the subject disappeared
Undo the operation with Edit > Undo and try a more precise selection, such as Smart Lasso, if the background has a clear edge. Reduce the complexity of the selection where possible and inspect hair, shadows, and small gaps at high zoom. If the edge still needs cleanup, use an editor with masks or more advanced edge-refinement tools.

The source is a PDF
Preview treats a PDF differently from a standalone image. Export the relevant PDF page as an image first, then apply image tools to the exported file. If you need to change the background of only one page, export that page rather than assuming the PDF itself has an editable image layer.
The new background looks opaque or the transparency is gone
Check that you saved the cutout as a PNG before compositing it. If you saved an intermediate file in a format that does not preserve transparency, the background may already have been filled or flattened. Return to the original or duplicate, remove the background again, and save the transparent result as PNG.

Preview can change what you see around an image and can remove an existing background, but it does not document a native background layer or a command that places an arbitrary solid color behind the cutout. For that final composition, use a layer-based image editor or layout app after Preview.
