GIMP 3.0 RC1 was the first release candidate for the long-awaited GIMP 3.0, announced on November 6, 2024. It previewed a major platform transition—not just a new collection of tools—with a completed GTK3 port, substantial color-management work, non-destructive filters, new file-format support, and a redesigned public plug-in API.

RC1 was never intended to be the version most people should use for important production work. It has since been superseded by stable GIMP 3.0 and later 3.2 releases, so its importance today is historical and technical: it shows what changed when GIMP moved beyond the 2.10 generation.

But RC1 was never intended to be the version most people should use for important production work. The GIMP team described it as a broad community-testing build and warned that it could still contain bugs, regressions, and serious crashes. It has also been superseded: GIMP 3.0 became stable on March 16, 2025, and the official downloads listing identified GIMP 3.2.4, released April 17, 2026, as the current stable release at the time of the supplied research.

That makes GIMP 3.0 RC1 most useful today as a historical explanation of how GIMP moved from the 2.10 generation into the 3.x era—and why the upgrade was more disruptive than an ordinary point release.

What was GIMP 3.0 RC1?

“RC1” means “release candidate 1”: a build considered close enough to a final release for wide testing, but not yet guaranteed to be stable. GIMP’s developers released RC1 after more than six years of work across the 2.99 development series.

The team wanted people who had stayed on GIMP 2.10, as well as existing development testers, to install the candidate, try normal workflows, and report problems. That included testing old XCF projects, settings, scripts, plug-ins, image formats, tablets, and operating-system integrations.

For a painter or photographer, the practical distinction was simple:

  • Good uses for RC1: experimentation, testing a copy of an existing workflow, checking plug-in compatibility, and reporting bugs.
  • Bad uses for RC1: mission-critical client work, relying on untested third-party extensions, or opening an important project without a verified backup.

RC2 later demonstrated why that warning mattered. Community testing uncovered problems involving migration of GIMP 2.10 settings, an unexpected Windows console, missing graphical-interface fonts on some macOS installations, and darktable integration.

Why GIMP 3.0 was such a large update

GIMP 3.0 combined several kinds of change that are significant on their own. It modernized the desktop toolkit, changed internal and public APIs, expanded color-aware processing, revised editing workflows, and added visible features for artists and photographers. This was therefore both a user-interface upgrade and a compatibility event for developers.

GTK3 modernized the application

The 3.0 development cycle completed GIMP’s move from GTK2 to GTK3. That gave the application a more modern foundation for desktop integration, interface behavior, scaling, and future development.

RC1 also improved the older icon theme by recreating many tool icons as SVG files. Vector icons can scale more cleanly on high-density displays than fixed-size raster artwork. Other interface changes included:

  • an updated Wilber logo;
  • a new splash-screen system;
  • restored mouse-wheel navigation between dockable-dialog tabs;
  • broader multi-selection behavior in interface lists and controls; and
  • respect for the operating system’s reduced-animation preference in the About dialog.

These are not all headline features, but they matter in an application used for long painting, retouching, and compositing sessions. A more consistent toolkit and better scaling can reduce friction even when the image-editing commands themselves have not changed.

Color management was rebuilt across more of the application

Color management was one of the most important technical themes of GIMP 3.0. The developers worked to make more parts of GIMP aware of color spaces and to preserve the appearance of older files when they were opened in the new version.

That included efforts to ensure that legacy XCF projects—including very old files—continued to render consistently in GIMP 3.0. This was especially important because a major internal color-management change can affect how colors are interpreted, displayed, and converted.

RC1 did not mean that every color-management task was finished. The work continued after the release candidate and into the stable 3.x development cycle. Users working for print, photography, or other color-critical output should still distinguish between an application becoming more color-space-aware and having a complete, end-to-end color-managed workflow. The monitor, operating-system profile, image profile, export settings, and destination process all remain relevant.

Filters could remain editable

RC1 expanded GIMP’s non-destructive filter workflow. Instead of permanently changing the pixels as soon as a filter was applied, users could preserve the effect as an editable operation. That makes it easier to revisit a blur, sharpen, lighting adjustment, or other effect later without returning to an earlier file.

The workflow was designed to provide real-time, on-canvas previews for many filters. This is particularly useful for painters and retouchers who need to judge an effect at the actual image scale rather than by guessing from a separate dialog preview.

GIMP also recognized that some users prefer the traditional destructive workflow. RC1 introduced a Merge Filters option for merging a filter immediately after committing it. The option was not available in every situation, including some layer-group cases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RC1 also began storing filter versions in XCF files. The developers noted that additional GEGL work was still needed for the complete implementation, so early testing should not be treated as proof that every filter, saved project, or cross-version workflow behaved identically.

  • Flexible using - Works perfectly for sketching, inking, coloring and digital drawing on graphics tablets.

What changed for plug-ins and scripts?

For extension developers, the API transition was arguably more consequential than the interface refresh. RC1 finalized major portions of GIMP’s public API and made changes that meant GIMP 2.10 plug-ins and scripts could not automatically be assumed to work unchanged.

Among the changes, custom GimpRGB structures were replaced by the color-managed GeglColor type. Array handling was improved, and functions were added, renamed, or removed compared with the 2.10 API.

The release notes encouraged developers to begin porting their existing work and pointed them toward initial API documentation and repository examples. The official GIMP 3 documentation also provides a Python plug-in tutorial based on the 3.0 API and the Gimp.PlugIn class.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Community feedback led to further API work. RC2 added a public GEGL filter API after developers reported migration difficulties with the initial RC1 changes. That API supported applying filters immediately or adding them as non-destructive effects, with examples for C, Python, and Script-Fu.

Practical advice for extension users: if a plug-in is essential to your work, check whether its developer has published a GIMP 3-compatible version before moving a production workflow. Do not assume that a plug-in that worked in 2.10 will work simply because the image editor can open your XCF files.

New formats and compatibility improvements

RC1 added support for importing 64-bit-per-pixel BMP images and loading layers from TIFF files saved by Autodesk SketchBook. The broader GIMP 3 development cycle also worked on compatibility with formats and applications used by artists, photographers, and designers.

GIMP 3 documentation covers formats including JPEG, PNG, GIF, PSD, DDS, TIFF, BMP, PDF, HEIF/HEIC, and WebP, although support can differ between importing, exporting, layers, metadata, compression, and color depth. RC2 continued improving BMP precision and compression handling, larger-file loading, CMYK PAM loading, and other compatibility details.

In practice, “supports PSD” should not be read as “perfectly reproduces every Photoshop document.” Complex documents can contain features whose behavior depends on the format and on how each application interprets layers, effects, masks, text, color profiles, and adjustment data. Test representative files before promising a seamless cross-application handoff.

Tablet and painting implications

GIMP’s official documentation explains that a graphics tablet can provide pressure-sensitive behavior and finer control than a mouse for brush tools. Depending on the tablet and configuration, pressure and other inputs such as tilt can influence brush dynamics.

That makes a graphics drawing tablet with stylus an optional but sensible accessory for digital artists, illustrators, and painters who want pressure-sensitive strokes. It is not required to use GIMP, and RC1 itself was not a reason every user needed to buy new hardware. A mouse or trackpad remains adequate for many selections, photo adjustments, layout tasks, and occasional edits.

For painting, the meaningful benefit is control: lighter pressure can produce a narrower or more transparent stroke, while firmer pressure can produce a heavier mark, depending on the selected brush dynamics. Before buying, check operating-system support, active-area size, pen pressure and tilt support, shortcut controls, and whether the tablet’s driver behaves reliably on your platform.

Where RC1 could be installed

Official RC1 packages were provided for Linux as Flatpaks, Windows through universal installers and an MSIX preview package, and macOS through Intel and Apple Silicon DMG packages. Separate distribution packages were expected to come from third parties.

RC2 added an experimental AppImage and improved the nightly Flatpak packaging arrangement. By RC3, AppImage was described as official, while Linux, Windows, and macOS packages continued to be offered.

Those details matter historically, but they should not be mistaken for current download advice. The appropriate starting point now is the official GIMP downloads page and its stable release listing, not an archived RC1 installer. The supplied research identifies GIMP 3.2.4, released April 17, 2026, as the current stable listing and notes that the page provides Linux, macOS, and Windows packages together with SHA256 hashes.

The subsequent 3.2 series added further capabilities, including non-destructive link layers, vector layers, new MyPaint brushes, text-editor improvements, an Overwrite paint mode, expanded PSD and DDS support, and SVG export. Those features belong to the later 3.2 branch rather than to RC1, but they explain why an article about the first 3.0 release candidate should not end by treating that candidate as the final destination.

Who should care about the RC1 story?

  • GIMP 2.10 users: The story explains why upgrading involved more than installing a routine point release. Settings, plug-ins, scripts, and long-established workflows needed testing.
  • Photographers and retouchers: Non-destructive filters, color-management changes, high-bit-depth processing, PSD compatibility, and other format improvements are the most relevant areas.
  • Digital artists: GTK3 scaling, tablet input, pressure-sensitive brush dynamics, and the broader MyPaint ecosystem are more useful than cosmetic branding changes.
  • Plug-in and script developers: The GIMP 3 API transition is central. Porting requires consulting the GIMP 3 API and Python plug-in documentation rather than adapting by guesswork.
  • Release-news readers: RC1 is a good example of how a long-running open-source project moves from development builds to community testing and then to a stable release.

Should you download GIMP 3.0 RC1 now?

For nearly everyone, no. RC1 is a historical preview and an archived testing build, not the recommended version for a new installation. Use the current stable release listed by the official GIMP downloads page instead.

If you specifically need to reproduce an old bug, test an extension against the original candidate, or compare the state of the software during the 3.0 transition, RC1 can have research value. In that case:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Keep a verified backup of XCF files and your GIMP 2.10 configuration.
  2. Install the candidate separately from your everyday setup where possible.
  3. Test copies of representative projects, not the only copy of an important file.
  4. Check every essential plug-in and script for GIMP 3 compatibility.
  5. Record the operating system, package format, plug-in versions, and exact failure symptoms.
  6. Report reproducible problems through the project’s official issue-reporting channels.

The lasting significance of RC1 is not that it was a build everyone should have installed. It is that it exposed the scale of GIMP’s transition: a modernized desktop foundation, a more ambitious editing model, deeper color awareness, new file-format work, and an API migration that affected the surrounding plug-in ecosystem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was GIMP 3.0 RC1 safe to use as a daily production version?

No. GIMP 3.0 RC1 was a release candidate intended for broad community testing, and the developers warned about bugs, regressions, and potentially serious crashes. It is useful for historical testing or compatibility work, but most users should install the current stable release instead.

What were the biggest changes previewed by GIMP 3.0 RC1?

The major transition included the completed GTK3 port, improved high-DPI icon scaling, expanded color-management work, non-destructive filters, additional file-format support, and a substantially revised public plug-in and scripting API.

Will GIMP 2.10 plug-ins work in GIMP 3?

Not necessarily. GIMP 2.10 plug-ins and scripts could require porting because GIMP 3 changed types, functions, array handling, and other API details. Developers should consult the GIMP 3 API and Python plug-in documentation and verify each extension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I download instead of GIMP 3.0 RC1?

The supplied research identifies stable GIMP 3.2.4, released April 17, 2026, as the current listing at the time of research. Because download information can change, use the official GIMP downloads page to verify the current version before installing.

The Bottom Line

GIMP 3.0 RC1, released on November 6, 2024, was a major testing milestone rather than a finished product. It previewed the GTK3 transition, non-destructive filters, color-management improvements, format support, and the GIMP 3 plug-in API. Stable GIMP 3.0 followed on March 16, 2025, and readers looking for GIMP today should use the current stable release rather than the archived RC1 build.
