To insert a symbol in GIMP, activate the Text tool, place the cursor in an editable text layer, and use your operating system’s character picker—or copy and paste the character. GIMP does not need a separate universal symbol-insertion command for ordinary Unicode text.
To insert a symbol in GIMP, use the Text tool, place the cursor in a text layer, and insert the character through your operating system’s symbol picker—or copy and paste it from another Unicode-capable application. GIMP does not require a separate universal “Insert Symbol” command for ordinary Unicode characters.
The basic method in GIMP
- Open your image in GIMP.
- Choose Tools → Text, click the Text tool in the toolbox, or press T.
- Click inside an existing editable text layer, or click the canvas to create a new one. GIMP places the text in its own text layer.
- Click where the symbol should appear and make sure the insertion cursor is active.
- Insert the character with the Windows, macOS, or Linux method below—or paste it from another application.
- If necessary, select the new character and change its font, size, color, baseline, or kerning using the Text tool options.
You can edit directly on the canvas. If you prefer a separate editing window, select the Text tool and enable Use editor window in the tool options.

Insert symbols in GIMP on Windows
Use the Symbols panel
- Activate the text cursor in GIMP.
- Press Windows+. (period), or press Windows+; (semicolon).
- Choose the Symbols section rather than Emoji.
- Browse the categories or search if the panel offers a search field.
- Click a symbol to insert it at the cursor position in GIMP.
This is usually the most convenient Windows method for symbols and emoji. The panel is available in Windows 10 and Windows 11, although its categories and appearance can vary with the Windows version and language settings.
Use Character Map
Windows Character Map is useful when you want to inspect characters by font before copying them.
- Open Windows Search and type Character Map.
- Launch the Character Map application.
- Choose a font if needed, select the character, and click Copy.
- Return to GIMP, click inside the text layer, and press Ctrl+V.
Character Map is often preferable to an Alt code for uncommon symbols because it lets you see which glyphs the selected font actually contains.

Use a Windows Alt code
For a limited group of common characters, hold Alt, type the number on the numeric keypad, and release Alt. The number row above the letters does not work for this method.
| Character | Alt code |
|---|---|
| © | Alt+0169 |
| ® | Alt+0174 |
| TM | Alt+0153 |
| • | Alt+0149 |
| § | Alt+0167 |
| — | Alt+0151 |
Alt codes are not a complete Unicode-entry system. If an Alt code does nothing, produces the wrong character, or your keyboard has no numeric keypad, use the Symbols panel or Character Map instead. A full-size keyboard with numeric keypad can be useful if you regularly use this particular Windows input method, but neither that hardware nor an Alt code is required for inserting symbols in GIMP.

Insert symbols in GIMP on macOS
Use Character Viewer
- Activate the text cursor in GIMP.
- Press Control+Command+Space to open Character Viewer.
- Search for a symbol or browse the categories.
- Double-click the desired character to insert it into the GIMP text layer.
Character Viewer includes mathematical symbols, accented Latin characters, pictographs, and many other Unicode characters. It is generally the easiest macOS option when you know what the symbol looks like but not its code point.
Use Unicode Hex Input
macOS can also insert a character by its hexadecimal Unicode value:
- Open the macOS Keyboard settings and add Unicode Hex Input as an input source.
- Switch to that input source.
- Place the cursor in GIMP, hold Option, and type the character’s hexadecimal code point.
- Release Option.
For example, the heart character is U+2665, so its hexadecimal value is 2665. Character Viewer is less error-prone if you do not routinely work with Unicode code points.
Insert symbols in GIMP on Linux
Use Unicode code-point input
On many Linux desktop environments, including the GTK-based workflow documented for GNOME, use this sequence:
- Place the cursor inside the GIMP text layer.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+U.
- Type the hexadecimal code point without the
U+prefix. - Press Enter.
For example, to enter a heart, type Ctrl+Shift+U, then 2665, and press Enter. The result is ♥.
Use GNOME Characters
In GNOME, open the Activities overview and launch Characters. Search or browse for the symbol, copy it, return to GIMP, click in the text layer, and paste it.

Use a Compose key
Linux desktops can also be configured with a Compose key for frequently used combinations. For example, a Compose sequence involving an apostrophe and a letter can produce an acute-accented character. The exact key and sequences depend on your desktop and keyboard configuration, so Characters or Unicode code-point input is usually more predictable for an occasional symbol.
Copy and paste a symbol into GIMP
Copy and paste is often the simplest approach, especially for emoji, uncommon scripts, mathematical notation, and symbols whose code points you do not know.
- Find the character in Windows Character Map, macOS Character Viewer, GNOME Characters, or another Unicode-capable application.
- Copy it.
- Activate GIMP’s Text tool and click inside the editable text layer.
- Place the cursor at the required position and press Ctrl+V on Windows or Linux, or Command+V on macOS.
You can also copy a symbol from a web page, but check the result after pasting: the source may use a font or character that is unavailable in your GIMP text layer. GIMP’s text context menu also provides copy and paste operations.
Format just the inserted symbol
A symbol does not have to use the same formatting as the surrounding text. Select the character in the text layer, then use the Text tool controls to adjust its:

- font size;
- color;
- baseline position;
- kerning and spacing.
This is useful when the main typeface lacks a particular glyph. You can assign a different font to only the affected character rather than changing the entire text layer. The replacement font must still contain the desired glyph.
Why the symbol appears as a box or question mark
A square box, often called a tofu glyph, usually means that the selected font does not include the requested character. GIMP can accept the character, but it cannot draw a glyph that the font does not supply.

- Select the missing character with the Text tool.
- Choose another font with broader Unicode coverage.
- Try the symbol again or paste it again if necessary.
- Check the result at the size and export format you intend to use.
No font contains every Unicode character. Specialized scripts can have especially limited coverage, and a font that supports Latin, Greek, and common symbols may not support a particular historic, technical, or less common script. Emoji support is also inconsistent: the same character can have a different visual design in different fonts and operating systems.
If a newly installed font does not appear in GIMP
GIMP uses FreeType 2 for font rendering and Fontconfig for font management. A font installed through the operating system will generally become available after you restart GIMP. If GIMP is already open, open the Fonts dialog and use its refresh control to rescan the available fonts.
After refreshing or restarting, select the text character again and choose the newly available font. Make sure the font is properly installed and that its license permits the use you intend, particularly for commercial artwork or redistribution.
If the symbol is inserted but invisible
Check these possibilities in order:
- The wrong layer is active: select the intended editable text layer in the Layers dock.
- The cursor is not inside the text: choose the Text tool and click directly in the text before pasting or typing.
- The glyph is missing: try another font.
- The text is outside the image: move or reposition the text layer so it is within the canvas.
- The text box is clipping the content: inspect the box dimensions and its overflow.
- The symbol is on another line: a fixed text box can constrain the layout and move text to a new line or beyond the visible area.
- The symbol is too small or blends into the background: temporarily increase its size or change its color to confirm that it is present.
GIMP supports both dynamic and fixed text boxes. A fixed box can constrain where the text flows, so a character may be present but not visible where you expected it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the text editable until you are finished
Leave the layer as a text layer while you are still inserting symbols, changing fonts, or revising the wording. Do not rasterize it prematurely.
GIMP retains editable text information in text layers, but certain non-text transformations and pixel-level edits can interact badly with later text editing. If you transform a text layer at the pixel level and then edit the text, GIMP may redraw the text and discard those intervening pixel modifications. For a safe workflow, finish the symbol and typography work first, duplicate the text layer as a backup if needed, and rasterize or apply pixel-level effects only when you no longer need normal text editing.

Which method should you use?
| Situation | Best option |
|---|---|
| You know what the symbol looks like | Windows Symbols panel, macOS Character Viewer, GNOME Characters, or copy and paste |
| You know the Unicode code point | Windows Character Map, macOS Unicode Hex Input, or Linux Unicode input |
| You need a common Windows character and have a number pad | Alt code |
| You need emoji or an uncommon symbol | Copy and paste from a Unicode-capable character picker, then verify the font |
| The character appears as a box | Change the selected character to a font containing that glyph |
| You expect to revise the artwork later | Keep the layer editable as a text layer |
Final checks before exporting
- Confirm that the intended character—not a visually similar substitute—was inserted.
- Check the symbol’s font, size, baseline, color, and spacing against the surrounding text.
- View the artwork at its intended final size.
- Look for missing-glyph boxes, clipping, unexpected line breaks, or an emoji style that does not suit the design.
- Keep an editable text-layer version of the image before rasterizing or applying destructive effects.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does GIMP have an Insert Symbol command?
No. Select the Text tool, click inside a text layer, and use your operating system’s symbol picker or paste the character from another Unicode-capable application.
Why does my symbol appear as a square box in GIMP?
Usually the font does not contain that character’s glyph. Select the character and try a font with broader Unicode coverage. If you installed a new font, restart GIMP or refresh the Fonts dialog.
What is the quickest way to insert a special character in GIMP?
On Windows, press Windows key + period and choose Symbols, or open Character Map. On macOS, press Control-Command-Space. On many Linux desktops, press Ctrl+Shift+U, enter the hexadecimal code point, and press Enter.
Can I use Alt codes to insert symbols in GIMP?
Yes, but Alt codes cover only a limited set of characters and require the numeric keypad. Character Map or the Symbols panel is better for broad Unicode coverage.
The Bottom Line
Use GIMP’s Text tool and your operating system’s character picker, Unicode input method, or clipboard. If the character appears as a box, the problem is usually font coverage—not the insertion method. Keep the text layer editable until the typography is finished.
