Blender 4.5.5: What Changed and Whether You Should Install It

Blender 4.5.5 is a maintenance update for the Blender 4.5 LTS branch, focused on corrections rather than major new features. Here is who should install it, what to test, and how to protect an existing production pipeline.

Blender 4.5.5 is a maintenance release in the Blender 4.5 LTS branch, not a major feature upgrade. It is intended for users who want a more carefully corrected and supported 4.5 installation, particularly for production projects, teaching environments, and add-on-dependent workflows. The release was reported on November 18, 2025 and belongs to an LTS line scheduled for maintenance through July 2027.

If you are already using Blender 4.5, installing the latest appropriate 4.5.x maintenance build is generally more sensible than staying on an older patch. However, because later 4.5.x releases or newer major versions may exist by the time you read this, check Blender’s official LTS download page before treating 4.5.5 as the newest build. If you need new modeling, animation, rendering, or simulation features, compare the current major release separately rather than expecting them from 4.5.5.

What Blender 4.5.5 actually is

Blender 4.5.5 is a numbered corrective update within the Blender 4.5 Long-Term Support series. Blender itself is a free, open-source 3D creation suite covering modeling, sculpting, texturing, rigging, animation, rendering, compositing, video editing, and Python scripting.

The important distinction is between a major Blender release and an LTS maintenance release:

  • Major releases can introduce substantial features, changed workflows, API changes, and compatibility considerations.
  • LTS maintenance releases primarily correct defects and preserve a dependable version line for projects that should not migrate frequently.
  • Blender 4.5.5 belongs to the second category. It should be evaluated as a stability and maintenance update, not as “the next generation of Blender.”

Blender’s 4.5 LTS branch initially released on July 15, 2025. A Blender Japan release report dated Blender 4.5.5 to November 18, 2025 and characterized it as primarily a bug-fix release. Blender’s LTS documentation describes two years of bug-fix support, placing the 4.5 LTS maintenance horizon around July 2027.

Those dates describe the 4.5 branch, not a guarantee that 4.5.5 remains the newest 4.5 patch today. Since this is a historical point release, confirm the current patch number on Blender’s official release dashboard before downloading.

What changed in Blender 4.5.5?

The available release information describes Blender 4.5.5 as a corrective build with few or no meaningful new artist-facing features. Its purpose is to improve the behavior of the existing 4.5 LTS branch rather than add a new modeling system, animation tool, renderer, or large interface overhaul.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Reported fixes include an issue involving Intel Arc OpenGL light-probe interpolation and a Python UI template exposing a property that did not exist. These examples illustrate the type of problem addressed by the release, but they are not an exhaustive changelog. For a complete list of corrections, consult Blender’s official corrective-release notes for the 4.5 LTS branch.

There is no evidence in the supplied release material for a specific percentage improvement in rendering speed, viewport performance, crash rate, or memory use. You should therefore not install 4.5.5 expecting a benchmarked performance gain. The safer description is:

Blender 4.5.5 is a maintenance update intended to improve stability and correct behavior in the 4.5 LTS branch, rather than introduce a major collection of new tools.

Who should use Blender 4.5.5?

It makes sense for production projects

Blender’s deployment guidance recommends choosing one LTS version for a production project. That approach reduces the risk that a newer release will alter file behavior, add-on APIs, render results, color management, modifiers, Geometry Nodes behavior, or Python scripts during a project.

Blender 4.5.5 is therefore a reasonable choice for:

  • Studios standardizing a project on the Blender 4.5 LTS branch.
  • Freelancers who need a predictable version for client work.
  • Schools and training programs that want all students using the same build.
  • Teams with an add-on or scripted pipeline that has been tested against Blender 4.5.
  • Artists who prefer a supported maintenance branch over adopting every new major release immediately.

It may not be the right choice for feature-driven users

If you need a feature introduced after Blender 4.5, 4.5.5 will not provide it merely because it has a higher patch number. In that case, investigate the current major release and test it independently.

The practical decision is:

Your priority Best starting point
Stable 4.5 production baseline The newest suitable Blender 4.5.x LTS maintenance build
A specific new feature The major release that introduced and supports that feature
Existing add-on compatibility The version your add-on developer explicitly supports, tested with a copy of your project
Learning Blender from scratch A current supported release, unless a course or class requires 4.5

Should you upgrade from an earlier Blender 4.5 release?

If your project is already on Blender 4.5, moving to a later corrective build is usually a smaller decision than migrating to a different major branch. Even so, “small” does not mean “risk-free.” A project can open successfully while producing different results because of renderer changes, color management, modifier evaluation, Geometry Nodes behavior, add-ons, or Python code.

Use this upgrade procedure:

  1. Record the current version. Note the exact Blender build, operating system, render engine, add-on versions, and any custom scripts.
  2. Save a separate project copy. Do not make the first test on the only copy of an active production file.
  3. Keep the existing Blender installation. Blender supports side-by-side versions, and a portable ZIP build can test a branch without replacing your current installation.
  4. Open representative files. Test a simple scene, a demanding scene, an animation, a Geometry Nodes file, and any file using important add-ons.
  5. Render comparison frames. Compare lighting, materials, compositing, simulations, motion blur, denoising, color management, and output settings rather than checking only whether the file opens.
  6. Test the complete pipeline. Verify texture paths, cache locations, Python scripts, export formats, render-farm submission, and team file exchange.
  7. Adopt it deliberately. Once the tests pass, document the exact build and distribute the same version to everyone on the project.

Do not assume that every third-party add-on made for “Blender 4.5” is automatically compatible with 4.5.5. Compatibility depends on the add-on’s Python API usage, binaries, developer support, and the specific operating system.

How to install Blender 4.5.5 safely

Download Blender from blender.org or another official Blender distribution channel. Avoid relying on an unofficial mirror when you need a known build for a production pipeline.

Choose the correct platform

Check whether you need:

  • Windows x64
  • Windows ARM64
  • macOS on Apple Silicon
  • macOS on Intel
  • Linux

The official requirements page lists Blender as cross-platform and supports both x64 and ARM64 architectures. Distribution channels can update at different times, so the Microsoft Store, Steam, direct installer, and official archive should not be assumed to expose the same patch simultaneously.

Windows installer versus portable ZIP

Windows users can choose a conventional installer or a portable ZIP distribution. The ZIP version is useful when you:

  • Do not have administrator rights.
  • Want to test 4.5.5 without replacing another Blender version.
  • Need separate folders for different projects or branches.
  • Want to archive the exact Blender build used by a project.

A portable copy is not automatically isolated from every user-level configuration or external add-on, so verify where your preferences, scripts, and extensions are being loaded from before using it for a controlled pipeline.

Keep an older version for rollback

Do not uninstall a working Blender version until the new build has passed your tests. Blender makes previous versions available, which supports a straightforward rollback plan. Keep the installer or archive, project backups, add-on installers, and any required configuration files together with the project documentation.

Blender 4.5.5 hardware requirements

Blender’s current official requirements should be treated as the authority because requirements can change over time and are not necessarily a frozen, version-specific benchmark for Blender 4.5.5.

Component Minimum listed requirement Recommended listed configuration
Memory 8 GB RAM 32 GB RAM
Windows/Linux CPU Four-core CPU with SSE4.2 Eight-core CPU
Windows/Linux GPU 2 GB VRAM and OpenGL 4.3 8 GB VRAM
macOS macOS 11.2 Big Sur or later; Apple Silicon or Intel hardware Apple Silicon is recommended
Display 1920×1080 is recommended Multiple displays are supported

These figures describe the official requirements page, not a promise that every scene will run comfortably at the minimum. Large sculpting files, high-resolution textures, dense simulations, Geometry Nodes systems, compositing, and GPU rendering can demand substantially more memory and graphics capacity.

Useful input devices for Blender

Blender can technically be used with a trackpad or two-button mouse, but Blender’s official requirements page recommends a three-button mouse. The middle mouse button is particularly important for viewport orbiting and navigation, so a conventional three-button mouse can make everyday modeling and scene work much less awkward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For sculpting, texture painting, and Grease Pencil work, the same requirements page identifies pen tablets and pen displays as useful. Pressure sensitivity and a pen-shaped input can provide better control than a mouse for brush-based tasks.

If those are your main workflows, compare a graphics tablet for Blender or pen display for sculpting rather than buying a device solely because it is marketed for general gaming. The right choice depends on desk space, display size, pressure support, operating-system drivers, and whether you want to look at a separate monitor or directly at the pen display. Blender does not endorse a particular brand or model.

For general navigation, a three-button mouse for Blender is a practical low-cost improvement. The relevant feature is the reliable middle-button input, not a specific brand.

Cycles GPU rendering: check compatibility before buying

Cycles can render on the CPU or use supported GPU backends. Blender’s 4.5 manual documents NVIDIA CUDA and OptiX, AMD HIP, and automatic device selection where supported. OptiX requires a compatible NVIDIA card and driver. The supported backend also depends on the operating system, Blender build, GPU generation, and driver state.

Register your device to access additional programs like ArtRage 5 and openCanvas for expanded creative possibilities.

Do not choose a graphics card based only on its brand or VRAM amount. Before buying, verify:

  • That the GPU is supported by the relevant Blender 4.5 Cycles backend.
  • That your operating system and driver meet the backend requirements.
  • That the card has enough VRAM for your actual scene, textures, geometry, and render settings.
  • That your power supply, case, cooling, and motherboard can support it.
  • Whether CPU rendering or another supported backend is a better fallback for your pipeline.

Changing the Cycles compute backend requires restarting Blender. Consult Blender’s Cycles GPU rendering documentation and the current requirements before selecting a model. A generic “GPU for Blender Cycles” recommendation would be incomplete without this model- and driver-specific check.

Compatibility checklist for studios and add-on users

Before making Blender 4.5.5 the team standard, check the following:

  • All required add-ons install and enable without errors.
  • Commercial add-ons are licensed for every workstation or render node.
  • Python scripts do not rely on removed, renamed, or changed properties.
  • File exchange works between artists, compositors, animators, and technical directors.
  • External textures, linked libraries, caches, simulations, and fonts resolve correctly.
  • Exports to the formats used by your clients or downstream applications still work.
  • Viewport and final renders match the approved test renders closely enough for the project.
  • Color management, view transforms, compositing, and denoising settings are documented.
  • Render-farm or headless Blender jobs use the same build as artists’ workstations.
  • The team has a tested rollback copy and knows which version to reopen the project with.

For a long-running project, standardize both the application version and the surrounding environment. A version number alone does not reproduce a result if the add-ons, GPU drivers, fonts, color-management files, assets, or scripts differ.

Blender is free, but learning and production still have costs

Blender does not require a paid edition or an internet connection for ordinary offline use. You can run a conventional installation or a self-contained portable copy. The costs usually appear elsewhere: hardware, storage, training, production time, asset management, and specialist peripherals.

Beginners who prefer structured instruction may benefit from a current Blender 3D book or printed reference guide. Check the edition carefully: a book written for an older Blender release may show different interface labels, tools, or workflows. A book is a learning aid, not an indication that Blender 4.5.5 is officially endorsed by the publisher or author.

Large Blender projects can also consume significant storage through source files, image textures, simulation caches, and rendered output. An SSD may improve general file-management responsiveness, but the supplied research does not establish a Blender-specific performance benchmark, so storage should be chosen for capacity, reliability, backup strategy, and workflow convenience rather than a promised render-speed increase.

Optional post-render distribution for Blender creators

If you render prerecorded Blender tutorials, course previews, animation showcases, or looping visual content, a separate distribution service can be useful after the render is complete. StreamNeo describes a workflow in which prerecorded video is uploaded to the cloud, looped as a continuous live stream, and automatically recovered if the stream is interrupted.

Download and verification checklist

  1. Start at Blender’s official download or LTS page.
  2. Confirm whether you need the 4.5 LTS branch or a newer major release.
  3. Check the exact patch number and release notes on the day you download.
  4. Select the correct operating-system architecture.
  5. Keep your existing Blender version and project files untouched until testing is complete.
  6. Install or unpack the new version in a separate location if you are evaluating it.
  7. Open a copy of a representative project and test add-ons, scripts, renders, exports, and caches.
  8. Record the final build number in the project documentation.

Blender 4.5.5 should be treated as one point on a maintained branch, not as an irreversible upgrade. The safest workflow is to use the latest suitable 4.5.x build, preserve the old environment, and migrate only after the project’s actual files and tools have passed inspection.
