The best Midjourney edits come from a controlled workflow: start with the right composition, set the final aspect ratio, mask only the area that needs to change, describe the replacement with precise art direction, compare variations against the original, and upscale only after the result passes a visual and rights review.

Midjourney’s web Editor now combines the practical roles of Remix, Vary Region, Pan, and Zoom Out. Its full Edit workspace also adds uploads, custom resizing, layers, Smart Select, Retexture, prompt suggestions, and export controls. It is powerful for repairs, extensions, replacements, and style changes—but it is not a substitute for careful masking, typography checks, product review, or legal clearance.

  • Light Editor: available when you open a Midjourney image from Create or Organize and choose Edit. It is convenient for quickly modifying an existing creation.
  • Full Edit tab: the more complete workspace for uploading an external image, pasting an image URL, changing the canvas, working with layers, using Retexture, entering a custom aspect ratio, and exporting the result.

For a professional workflow, use the full Edit tab when the image originated outside Midjourney or when you need deliberate control over layout, layers, and output dimensions. The current web-creation documentation lists a 10 MB maximum upload size, so resize or compress an external source if it exceeds that limit.

Before editing, identify the actual problem. Is the composition wrong, is one object distracting, does the image need more room for a banner, or does the whole scene need a different visual treatment? The answer determines which Editor tool to use.

Goal Best starting tool Why
Replace or remove one object Erase or Smart Select Limits regeneration to a defined area.
Add space around the subject Move/Resize, then Erase Creates a new canvas area and tells Midjourney where to generate.
Build a composition from several assets Layers Lets you position, scale, and combine source images before regeneration.
Change the overall visual language Retexture Regenerates the image as one coherent style while attempting to preserve structure.

1. Start with the right source image

Open a Midjourney creation from Create or Organize, then select Edit. For an outside image, open the full Edit page and upload the file or paste its image URL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a source with the correct fundamentals:

  • the subject is facing the right direction;
  • the camera angle and perspective are close to the final requirement;
  • the lighting direction is usable;
  • the overall composition places the subject where it needs to be; and
  • the image is large and clean enough for the intended delivery.

The Editor is strongest at repairing, extending, replacing, and restyling a defined region. It is less reliable when asked to rescue a fundamentally incorrect composition. If the subject is at the wrong angle or the image has no room for a required headline, generating a better base image may be faster than repeatedly editing the same one.

2. Set the composition and aspect ratio first

Use Move/Resize before making detailed edits. Depending on the current interface, this tool can scale the image, move the canvas edges, rotate the image, and change the aspect ratio. The full Edit tab also supports entering a custom aspect ratio.

Do this before adding small details. A late reframing can crop a carefully generated hand, product edge, face, or architectural line. Establish the delivery shape first—for example, a wide website banner, a square social image, a portrait poster, or a presentation slide.

Expanding a canvas for a banner

  1. Open the source image in the Editor.
  2. Use Move/Resize to create additional space on the required side or sides.
  3. Use Erase to mark the newly created transparent or empty area.
  4. Prompt for the missing environment, describing how it should connect to the existing scene.
  5. Compare the generated extensions for horizon continuity, lighting, scale, and texture.

For example, if a portrait subject needs room above the head for a title, expand the canvas upward, erase that new area, and ask for a continuation of the existing background. Do not ask for a completely new composition unless that is actually what you want.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Use Erase for controlled local edits

In the Paint panel, Erase marks an area for regeneration and Restore brings back portions that were previously erased. Adjust the brush size as you work.

A good mask is not necessarily the smallest possible mask. Make it only slightly larger than the object when surrounding detail must remain unchanged, but include enough context for Midjourney to understand the object’s edges, lighting, perspective, contact with the ground, and cast shadow.

How mask size affects the result

  • Mask too small: the replacement may have clipped edges, an unnatural shadow, the wrong perspective, or no convincing connection to nearby surfaces.
  • Mask too large: Midjourney has permission to change surrounding textures, furniture, facial features, lettering, or other details that were already correct.
  • Mask around the object and its immediate context: often provides the best balance for a replacement, especially when the object touches a table, wall, hand, floor, or shadow.

After masking, describe the intended result—not just the problem. “Remove the cup” gives less direction than “replace the plastic cup with a matte black ceramic mug, matching the existing perspective, soft window light, contact shadow, and shallow depth of field.”

A reliable local-edit prompt formula

Include as many of these constraints as the image actually requires:

  • Subject or replacement: what should appear;
  • Location: where it belongs in the frame;
  • Geometry: size, orientation, perspective, and relationship to nearby objects;
  • Lighting: direction, softness, color, and shadow behavior;
  • Material: surface, reflectivity, texture, and finish;
  • Color relationship: how it should harmonize or contrast with the existing image; and
  • Preservation instructions: what must remain unchanged.

Useful language includes “match the existing perspective,” “preserve the subject’s pose,” “keep the background lighting consistent,” and “do not alter the typography.” These are practical constraints, not guarantees. Midjourney may still reinterpret details, so inspect every important result manually.

4. Use Smart Select for object-level masking

Smart Select helps create a selection mask around an object or region. Add positive Include points to identify what should be selected and negative Exclude points to remove parts that were selected incorrectly.

Once the selection is refined, choose either Erase Selection or Erase Background. This step matters: if the green selection remains visible, it has not yet been applied as an erase mask. Submitting without applying the selection will not produce the intended edit.

Smart Select is particularly useful for:

  • removing a distracting object;
  • changing a background behind a subject;
  • isolating a foreground object;
  • replacing a prop without manually painting around every edge; and
  • creating a cleaner starting mask for a more detailed edit.

Automated selection can struggle with hair, thin straps, wires, transparent materials, reflective edges, smoke, foliage, and shadows. Zoom in and check those boundaries before submitting. If the selection cuts through a contact shadow, the replacement may appear to float; if it includes a person’s hair or fingers, those details may be regenerated unnecessarily.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Add layers when the job is compositing

The Layers panel allows you to add multiple images, reorder them, delete them, and move or scale the active layer. The check-marked layer is the one to which the Editor’s tools apply, so confirm that the intended layer is active before erasing or transforming anything.

A practical layered workflow is:

  1. Add the reference asset as a layer.
  2. Position and scale it until its perspective and proportions fit the composition.
  3. Erase the portions that should be rebuilt or blended into the scene.
  4. Check the edge transitions, contact points, occlusion, and shadows.
  5. Submit the edit with a prompt explaining how the inserted element should integrate with the existing image.

After a layered edit is submitted, the composition is flattened. Visible areas remain unchanged, while areas with visible transparency are regenerated. Save or download important intermediate versions before submitting another major change; once flattened, the original layer structure may no longer be available in the same editable form.

Use layers when you need to place or combine assets. Use Retexture instead when the goal is to give the whole image a coherent new visual treatment.

6. Reserve Retexture for global style changes

Retexture is designed to preserve the structure and composition of an image while applying a new style, surface treatment, lighting approach, or material language. It can be appropriate for turning a scene into a watercolor, editorial illustration, cinematic frame, or another unified visual direction.

  • product geometry and proportions;
  • brand marks and packaging;
  • architectural lines;
  • small objects that were already correct; and
  • the exact placement of important text.

A useful Retexture prompt names both the desired treatment and the structure to preserve: “Retexture this scene as a restrained editorial watercolor with visible paper grain and soft pigment edges; preserve the camera angle, subject placement, architecture, and overall lighting direction.”

7. Work as an art director, not a keyword collector

Professional prompts are constrained briefs. They explain the visual decision and the boundaries of the change instead of stacking disconnected style words.

For a local replacement, state the object, its position, how it should fit the scene, and what should not change:

“Replace the red plastic chair with a simple walnut dining chair in the same position and scale. Match the existing three-quarter perspective, warm light from the left, floor contact shadow, and shallow depth of field. Preserve the person, table, wall, and image framing.”

For background expansion, explain the continuation:

“Continue the pale plaster wall and soft morning window light into the empty area above the subject. Preserve the subject’s hair, face, pose, and the existing tonal balance. No objects, text, or new people.”

For a global restyle, describe the visual language and structural limits:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Apply a refined gouache painting treatment with opaque brushwork, subdued earth colors, and lightly visible paper texture. Preserve the original composition, subject silhouette, perspective, and relative scale of all major forms.”

When traceability matters, make one major change at a time. Save the strongest result before beginning the next edit. Each submission adds new results to the results panel, and a long chain of changes makes it harder to determine which instruction caused a defect.

Three professional use cases

Use case 1: Replace a distracting object

  1. Open the approved base image.
  2. Use Erase for a manually controlled mask, or Smart Select if the object has a clear silhouette.
  3. Include nearby shadow and contact areas when they must be regenerated with the replacement.
  4. Describe the new object’s material, position, perspective, scale, and lighting.
  5. Compare several results with the original, checking the surrounding objects for unintended changes.

This approach works well for props, furniture, packaging, clothing details, and background distractions. It is less suitable for exact product replication unless you are prepared to verify every dimension, logo, label, and feature.

Use case 2: Expand a background for a campaign layout

  1. Set the final banner or presentation aspect ratio first.
  2. Move or resize the canvas to create room for the copy or layout.
  3. Erase the new area.
  4. Prompt for a continuation of the existing environment, including its horizon, surface, light, and texture.
  5. Check whether the generated space remains visually quiet enough for text.

Generated background space can look plausible while still containing distracting shapes or tonal changes. If a designer will place text over the area, review it at the actual layout size rather than only in a large preview.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use case 3: Retexture a finished composition

  1. Duplicate or preserve the original before applying Retexture.
  2. Describe the target medium, surface, lighting, palette, and degree of stylization.
  3. State which structural features must remain stable.
  4. Compare the retextured image side by side with the original.
  5. Reject the result if the style change damages identity, geometry, branding, or legibility.

Retexture is best treated as a new visual interpretation of an approved composition, not as a guaranteed pixel-preserving filter.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

8. Compare, upscale, and export deliberately

Do not upscale the first acceptable variation automatically. First compare the result at the intended output size and then inspect critical areas at 100%.

Look closely at:

  • hands, fingers, eyes, and facial features;
  • letters, numbers, labels, and logos;
  • product edges, measurements, and repeated patterns;
  • hair, thin lines, transparent objects, and reflections;
  • shadows and contact points; and
  • seams between the original and regenerated regions.

The Editor can upscale an approved result to the Gallery or download it directly. Downloads can include the generated image and a transparent PNG containing the erased areas. Editor-created images do not appear in Create or Organize unless they are upscaled, although they remain available in the Editor.

Subtle or Creative upscaling?

  • Subtle: choose it when preserving the approved image is more important than introducing additional interpretation.
  • Creative: choose it when small defects may benefit from additional image interpretation, while understanding that it can also change details.

Current Midjourney upscaler documentation says V8.1 standard-definition images begin at 1024 × 1024 pixels for a 1:1 image and can be increased to 2048 × 2048 with Creative or Subtle upscaling. V8.1 HD images are generated at 2048 × 2048 and currently cannot be upscaled further. Actual dimensions vary with aspect ratio and version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These numbers are version-sensitive. Midjourney’s documentation currently says that V8.1 images can be used in the Editor, while Editor functionality is using V6.1. It also notes that editing V8.1 HD images through the website produces SD-resolution results that can be upscaled. Check the current documentation before committing to a particular version-and-resolution combination for client delivery.

Professional-results checklist

Before delivery, run this review:

  • Composition: Is the aspect ratio correct, and are important subjects clear of the crop?
  • Mask: Did the regeneration include enough context without granting unnecessary permission to change the surroundings?
  • Edges: Are hair, fingers, thin structures, reflections, and transparent materials clean?
  • Lighting: Do highlights, shadows, color temperature, and contrast agree with the original scene?
  • Perspective: Does the replacement sit on the same plane and obey the existing camera angle?
  • Contact: Does the object appear to touch the floor, table, hand, or wall naturally?
  • Typography: Has every character been checked manually?
  • Branding: Are logos, labels, packaging, and product features accurate enough for the intended use?
  • Resolution: Is the final upscaled dimension sufficient for the delivery channel?
  • Versions: Have you confirmed the current behavior of the model and Editor before relying on it?
  • Archive: Have you saved the approved version and, where relevant, the original and transparent erased-area export?
  • Rights: Do you have permission to use the source image, people, trademarks, and other protected material?

Privacy, ownership, and commercial publication

Midjourney is open by default, so creations may be discoverable on the Explore page. Stealth mode is available only on Pro and Mega plans. For confidential client work, use the appropriate private workflow and avoid editing sensitive material in a shared Discord context.

Midjourney describes external uploads and their edited results as visible only to the user on its website, but that does not remove your responsibility for the source material or the people depicted in it. Confirm that you have the necessary rights and permissions before uploading or publishing.

Midjourney says users own images and videos they create to the fullest extent possible under applicable law, subject to important exceptions. Under its current plan guidance, a company grossing more than $1 million per year must use a Pro or Mega plan for commercial ownership and use. Work upscaled from another user’s original creation remains owned by that original creator.

Ownership and copyright are not identical. Copyright protection for AI-assisted work varies by jurisdiction, and Midjourney recommends obtaining legal advice for specific situations. The current Terms of Service identified for this guidance are effective May 27, 2026; they place responsibility for uploaded and generated content on the user and require appropriate rights and permissions, including permissions relating to people in uploaded images. They also prohibit infringement, deceptive use, and certain abusive or non-consensual manipulation.

For client work, retain a record of the source asset, permission or license, Midjourney account and plan context, approved result, and any manual post-processing. That documentation will not make an unclear use lawful, but it makes your review process more accountable.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause Fix
The replacement has awkward edges or no believable shadow. The mask was too small or excluded important context. Expand the mask to include the immediate edge, contact area, and shadow; describe the existing lighting and perspective.
Correct surroundings changed. The mask was too large. Restore unaffected areas and redraw a tighter mask with only the necessary context.
Smart Select does nothing as expected. The green selection was not applied. Refine the Include and Exclude points, then click Erase Selection or Erase Background before submitting.
A small object edit changes the entire image. Retexture was used for a local repair. Return to Erase or Smart Select for surgical edits.
The result is smaller than expected. Version and HD/SD behavior differ. Check the current Editor and upscaler documentation; account for the V8.1-input/V6.1-Editor limitation and possible SD output.
Text or logos look nearly correct but are wrong. Generative editing is not reliable for exact typography or branding. Replace or typeset text in a conventional design application and verify every character and mark.
The subject looks pasted in. Perspective, color temperature, scale, or contact shadow does not match. Regenerate with explicit constraints or use a tighter compositing workflow with a layer and contextual mask.
A confidential draft becomes public. Midjourney creations are open by default or the work was handled in a shared context. Use an appropriate private plan and workflow before uploading confidential material; check the current privacy behavior for the account and surface being used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Midjourney’s Editor with an image created outside Midjourney?

Yes. Use the full Edit page to upload an image or paste an image URL. The current web-creation documentation lists a 10 MB maximum upload size.

What is the difference between Erase and Retexture?

Erase regenerates a selected area while aiming to leave the rest of the image intact. Retexture applies a new global visual treatment while attempting to preserve the original structure and composition. Use Erase for object-level repairs and Retexture for coherent whole-image style changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my Smart Select mask not being used?

A green Smart Select outline is only a selection. You must click Erase Selection or Erase Background to apply it before submitting the edit.

Does Midjourney preserve exact text and logos during editing?

No exact preservation should be assumed. Inspect every character, logo, label, and branded feature manually, and use conventional design or image-editing software for final typography when accuracy matters.

Can Midjourney’s Editor produce a private client image?

Privacy depends on the account plan and workflow. Midjourney is open by default, and Stealth mode is available only with Pro and Mega plans. External uploads and their edited results are described as visible only to the user on Midjourney’s website, but you should still use an appropriate private context and confirm current privacy behavior before handling confidential work.

The Bottom Line

For professional results, treat Midjourney’s Editor as a constrained generative compositing tool: establish the layout first, mask carefully, give the model lighting and perspective context, use Retexture only for global changes, and inspect every important detail at output size and 100%. The final quality also depends on version behavior, resolution choices, privacy settings, source permissions, and a manual check of typography, branding, and product accuracy.
