Microsoft Paint preview build 0.820.13407.0 was an early look at the application that would lead into Paint 3D. A Thurrott gallery published by Rafael Rivera on October 9, 2016, shows a redesigned interface combining familiar 2D drawing tools with 3D shapes and a community-oriented feature surface—just weeks before Microsoft formally unveiled its broader 3D strategy for Windows 10.

This is an archival gallery, not a current Microsoft release page, download listing, or hands-on review. The available evidence establishes what appeared in the screenshots, but not the preview’s complete behavior, performance, supported file formats, hardware requirements, or public distribution status.

What Microsoft Paint build 0.820.13407.0 was

The build number 0.820.13407.0 identifies an early Paint preview documented before Microsoft’s October 26, 2016 Windows 10 event. The screenshots were published by Rafael Rivera in a Thurrott gallery on October 9, 2016, with a fuller write-up expected later.

That timing matters. The gallery predates Microsoft’s public introduction of Paint 3D, so it should be read as evidence of an in-development interface rather than as documentation of the final product. It offers a valuable snapshot of Microsoft’s direction: Paint was being reimagined as more than a basic 2D raster editor, with 3D creation and online sharing becoming part of the concept.

What the gallery shows

The screenshot set covers a surprisingly broad portion of the application’s structure. It includes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Welcome screen
  • New-project screen
  • Drag-and-drop target
  • Selection tools
  • Resize tools
  • Paint tools
  • Text tools
  • 2D shapes
  • 3D shapes
  • Community integration
  • Print dialog
  • Application menu
  • About dialog

Viewed together, these screens suggest a deliberately reorganized application rather than a simple visual refresh of classic Paint. Conventional workflows—opening or starting an image, selecting and resizing content, drawing, adding text, printing, and using geometric shapes—appear alongside 3D-shape controls and a community surface.

However, screenshots establish the presence of interface categories, not the full implementation behind them. The gallery does not by itself prove how the tools worked, which file formats were supported, whether 3D objects could be freely edited, how stable the preview was, or what hardware and operating-system configuration it required.

The interface areas, explained carefully

Welcome and new-project screens

The welcome and new-project screens indicate an application with a more guided entry point than the traditional Paint window. The design appears intended to help users begin a new creation or move into a project-oriented workflow, rather than presenting only a blank canvas and a toolbar.

Because this was a preview, the screens should not be assumed to match the final Paint 3D startup experience. They document the direction of the product at that moment, not a guaranteed shipping layout.

Drag and drop

A dedicated drag-and-drop target is visible in the gallery. That points to an effort to make importing content more approachable: users could bring material into the application through a direct, visual interaction instead of relying solely on traditional file menus.

Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.

The screenshot does not establish which kinds of content the target accepted or whether the behavior was complete in build 0.820.13407.0.

Selection and resize tools

Selection and resizing remain central to a Paint-like editor. Their inclusion is significant because the 3D direction did not discard the familiar 2D editing model. The preview appears to have preserved basic image-editing concepts while placing them inside a broader creation environment.

Paint and text tools

The gallery also shows ordinary paint and text tools. These are the elements that make the preview recognizable as part of the Paint lineage: users could still expect drawing and annotation functions alongside the newer 3D-oriented controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available source does not provide a feature-by-feature description of brush behavior, text rendering, typography controls, layers, or editing limitations. Those details should not be inferred from the presence of a tool category alone.

2D and 3D shapes

The most revealing pairing in the gallery is the presence of both 2D shapes and 3D shapes. It shows Microsoft exploring a hybrid model in which a familiar beginner drawing application could offer volumetric objects without becoming a conventional professional 3D package.

This is the clearest visual link between the preview and the Paint 3D strategy Microsoft announced later in October. It is not, however, proof that every feature eventually associated with Paint 3D was already implemented in this build.

Community integration

A community-related surface appears among the photographed interface areas. That foreshadowed Microsoft’s plan to connect creation tools with sharing and an online 3D-content community.

On October 26, 2016, Microsoft described Paint 3D as a simple 3D art studio for creating, editing, and sharing 3D content. The company positioned it alongside the Remix 3D community and broader mixed-reality experiences. The gallery’s community screen therefore fits the product direction announced shortly afterward, but the screenshot alone does not establish the precise service, account requirements, or capabilities of the preview.

Print dialog, menu, and About dialog

The print dialog and application menu show that the preview was still designed as a practical Windows application, not merely a concept mockup. The About dialog is particularly useful for archival identification because it helps place the screenshots within a specific build.

Even so, the presence of a print dialog does not document printer compatibility or output quality. Likewise, the menu screenshot does not provide enough evidence to reconstruct every command or keyboard shortcut.

How the preview connects to Paint 3D

Microsoft’s October 26, 2016 announcement supplied the public context that the October 9 gallery lacked. Paint 3D was presented as an accessible 3D art studio designed to let people create, edit, and share 3D content. Microsoft connected the experience to Remix 3D and to its larger mixed-reality ambitions, with the product planned for the Windows 10 Creators Update.

A Microsoft feature overview published on November 1 described a much fuller set of capabilities, including:

  • Converting 2D images into 3D creations
  • Using 3D models
  • Applying realistic materials and textures
  • Adding stickers that wrap around objects
  • Creating with 3D Doodle
  • Integrating with Remix 3D

These later descriptions help explain where the preview was heading. They should not be used to claim that all of those functions were already present in build 0.820.13407.0. The responsible distinction is:

Evidence level What it supports
Directly visible in the gallery The build number, the preview interface, 2D editing categories, 3D-shape controls, community integration, printing, menus, and the About screen.
Announced shortly afterward by Microsoft Paint 3D’s accessible 3D-art positioning, Remix 3D, sharing, and mixed-reality context.
Documented in later Microsoft guidance Specific workflows such as 3D Doodle, materials, textures, stickers, the history slider, 3D View, and mixed-reality integration.

The Windows 10 Creators Update connection

The Windows 10 Creators Update was the public-release milestone for Microsoft’s Paint 3D and Remix 3D strategy. That makes the preview historically important: it sits between an unreleased interface concept and the product direction Microsoft presented to Windows users.

Later Microsoft guidance described Paint 3D as a free Windows 10 creative application combining 2D and 3D tools. It discussed brushes, a history slider, 3D View, and mixed-reality integration. Those later materials show continuity with the preview’s hybrid design, but they were published after the photographed build and cannot serve as a precise technical manual for it.

What the gallery cannot tell us

Several details often repeated in software coverage are not established by this archival item:

  • There is no confirmed public download channel for the exact build.
  • No installation package is supplied.
  • No system requirements are documented.
  • No licensing terms or distribution rights are documented.
  • No complete list of supported image or 3D file formats is provided.
  • No performance, stability, or hardware-acceleration testing is reported.
  • No evidence proves that the preview had the final Paint 3D feature set.
  • No evidence establishes that it can be safely installed on a current version of Windows.

These limitations are not minor footnotes. Preview builds can contain unfinished code, disabled services, obsolete dependencies, or interfaces that changed before release. A screenshot is reliable evidence of what was shown, but not of what was production-ready.

Can you download Paint preview build 0.820.13407.0 today?

The available research does not establish an official 2026 download for this exact build. The current Microsoft Store listing identifies the modern Paint application, but the retrieved Store information does not expose historical build details that connect it to 0.820.13407.0.

Microsoft’s current Paint Insider documentation also does not preserve this 2016 preview as a supported branch. Modern Insider material uses contemporary 11.x version numbering and discusses newer features, demonstrating that Paint has continued to evolve separately from the old preview.

For that reason, readers should treat build 0.820.13407.0 as an archival reference. Avoid unofficial executable mirrors, altered installers, and claims that a download is authentic unless its provenance can be independently verified. The gallery is useful for studying Microsoft’s product history; it is not a recommendation to install abandoned preview software.

Why this early Paint preview matters

Classic Paint was associated with quick, uncomplicated 2D drawing. This preview captures Microsoft’s attempt to extend that accessibility into a new creative category. The interface combined basic editing and drawing actions with 3D shapes and an online community, suggesting that Microsoft wanted 3D creation to feel approachable to ordinary Windows users rather than reserved for specialist modeling software.

That ambition aligned with the Creators Update’s larger message: Windows 10 was being presented as a platform for making, sharing, and experiencing digital content. Paint 3D was one of the most visible examples of that shift because it attached a familiar name to the 2D-to-3D transition.

The gallery’s lasting value is therefore documentary rather than practical. It records the visual and product-thinking transition immediately before the public Paint 3D announcement.

How to read the gallery without overstating it

  1. Start with the date and build number. October 9, 2016 and 0.820.13407.0 identify the material as pre-release evidence.
  2. Separate screens from behavior. A visible tool category confirms that the interface exposed it; it does not confirm how complete or capable the tool was.
  3. Use Microsoft’s later announcements as context. They explain the 3D, community, and mixed-reality direction, but do not retroactively document this exact build.
  4. Do not confuse lineage with identity. The preview appears to lead toward Paint 3D, but it should not be labeled the final Paint 3D interface.
  5. Do not treat the gallery as a download source. No official current distribution path for the exact build is established.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Paint preview build 0.820.13407.0 the final version of Paint 3D?

No. The gallery documents an early preview from October 2016. It shows 2D tools, 3D shapes, and community integration, but it does not establish the final Paint 3D interface or complete feature set.

Was build 0.820.13407.0 publicly available to everyone?

The available evidence does not document a broad public distribution channel, installation package, or licensing terms. It is safest to describe it as an early preview obtained and photographed before Microsoft’s October 26, 2016 announcement.

Can I safely install this Paint preview on Windows 11?

There is no verified official download or current support information for the exact build. Unofficial copies may be modified or unsafe, and an old preview may depend on services and components that no longer exist. The gallery should be treated as historical documentation, not an installation guide.

What features did Microsoft later associate with Paint 3D?

Microsoft later described 2D-to-3D conversion, 3D models, materials and textures, stickers that wrap around objects, 3D Doodle, Remix 3D integration, a history slider, 3D View, and mixed-reality integration. Those later descriptions provide context, but they do not prove that every feature was present in build 0.820.13407.0.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Paint preview build 0.820.13407.0 is best understood as a pre-release snapshot of Microsoft’s transition from classic 2D Paint toward Paint 3D. Its gallery shows familiar drawing and editing tools alongside 3D shapes and a community surface, shortly before the Windows 10 Creators Update announcement. It is historically valuable, but the evidence does not establish a current download, supported installation path, or exact equivalence with the final Paint 3D release.
