InfiniPaint is a specialized infinite-canvas application for drawing, visual notes, diagrams, and collaborative sketching. Unlike a conventional painting program, it is designed around a canvas that has no application-imposed zoom boundary: you can zoom far out to arrange large-scale ideas, then zoom in to work on details. Its practical limits are your computer’s memory, display, and the export format—not an ordinary fixed canvas size.

The best way to think about InfiniPaint is not as a complete Photoshop, Krita, or Procreate replacement. It is a spatial workspace that combines freehand drawing, text, images, files, layers, diagrams, and real-time multiplayer canvases. The native Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android builds are the most practical way to use it; the browser build is convenient for testing but may be less reliable.

What is InfiniPaint?

InfiniPaint is an open-source, collaborative drawing and note-taking application built around an effectively unlimited canvas. You can use it offline for ordinary drawing and planning, or host and join online lobbies so several people can work in the same space.

Its unusual strength is scale. A single canvas can contain a small handwritten note, a multi-page planning board, a diagram spread across a large area, or a zoomable sketch that places objects at dramatically different scales. The project describes use cases ranging from normal canvas work to massive drawings such as scale sketches of the solar system.

That does not mean every operation is unlimited. Large images, animated GIFs, raster exports, and complex canvases can consume substantial memory. Exporting a very large image may also produce a file that another image viewer or editor cannot handle comfortably. “Infinite” describes the canvas model, not unlimited performance or unlimited output size.

The infinite canvas is the main reason to use it

Most painting applications make you choose a document size before you begin. That model works well for a finished illustration, but it becomes restrictive when the work is exploratory: planning a game, mapping a process, arranging research, sketching an environment, or connecting ideas across a large visual space.

InfiniPaint lets you move through a shared visual space instead. You can place one cluster of notes in one area, create a diagram elsewhere, and use zoom level and distance to communicate structure. An infinite square grid, configurable visual properties, and coordinate axes can make that space easier to navigate when alignment or spatial relationships matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bookmarks are especially important on a large canvas. Rather than manually searching for a distant section, you can save important locations and return to them later. The v0.6.0 release also automatically creates an Origin bookmark for new files, providing a reliable starting reference.

What this is useful for

  • Mind maps and visual research boards
  • Large planning canvases and project roadmaps
  • Storyboards, level layouts, and environment sketches
  • Technical diagrams and process maps
  • Handwritten notes mixed with typed explanations
  • Collaborative brainstorming
  • Scale drawings and large spatial studies
  • Rough illustrations that do not need a fixed page boundary

The trade-off is that an infinite workspace can become disorganized. Use layers, folders, grids, bookmarks, and deliberate spatial grouping from the beginning. Without that structure, finding an old note or drawing can become harder than it would be in a folder of conventional documents.

Drawing and editing tools

InfiniPaint includes the tools expected for general canvas work: brush, eraser, line, rectangle, ellipse, text box, pan, zoom, edit/cursor, lasso selection, rectangular selection, and color picker tools. Selection tools can move, scale, and rotate objects, which makes the application more flexible than a simple bitmap sketchpad.

Layers support alpha, visibility controls, ordering, folders, and blend modes. That allows you to separate background structure, annotations, reference material, and finished strokes rather than treating the entire canvas as one flat image. Undo and redo are also available for iterative work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Text is more capable than basic annotation

Text boxes support formatting options including bold, italics, underline, strikethrough, overline, font selection, text color, highlighting, text size, paragraph alignment, and text direction. This makes InfiniPaint useful for visual documents and diagrams where typed explanations need to sit directly beside drawn elements.

There is an important cross-platform consideration: native builds can access local fonts, while the browser version relies on packaged fonts. A text box can therefore look different between native and web environments, particularly in collaborative work or when a canvas is opened on another device.

Images and files can become canvas objects

You can place images, animated GIFs, and arbitrary files on the canvas. Through the edit tool, files can be downloaded again. In a collaborative canvas, that can function as a small-file-sharing mechanism, although it should not be treated as a general cloud-storage or document-management system.

Large images and animated GIFs deserve caution. They may consume considerable memory, especially when several are placed on a large canvas. Keep source files manageable and save regularly when working on a complex document.

What changed in v0.6.0?

The official download information identifies v0.6.0 as the release to look for. The associated release entry dates it to June 7, 2026 and describes it as a major release. Because release availability and platform assets can change, verify the download page and release entry before installing.

Notable v0.6.0 changes include:

  • Detailed erasing: a new mode can erase portions of supported brushstrokes and lines rather than removing complete objects.
  • Mesh-based brushstroke and line storage: this uses more disk space but requires less memory to load.
  • Improved zoom behavior: zooming at line edges is more consistent.
  • Multiplayer scaling fixes: collaborative canvases received fixes related to scaling.
  • Saved size-lock state: size-lock settings persist as expected.
  • Corrupt-file handling: the application has improved handling for corrupt files.
  • Graphics settings: graphics options are separated more clearly.
  • Frame-rate controls: foreground and background FPS caps are configurable.
  • VSync: disabled by default.
  • Pen controls: pen-button mapping is more flexible.
  • Android file workflows: Android can import and share files through the system file selector.
  • Android updates: an update notification can provide a Get Update button.
  • Origin bookmark: new files automatically receive an Origin bookmark.

Important multiplayer warning: v0.6.0 is not network-compatible with previous versions. Older files can be opened, but people joining the same collaborative session should use compatible builds. Updating one participant while others remain on an older network version can prevent collaboration from working correctly.

Collaboration: how hosted lobbies work

InfiniPaint’s multiplayer mode is more than a shared whiteboard cursor. Participants can see one another draw in real time, use text chat, inspect the player list, and jump to another participant’s location. The ability to move directly to someone else’s area is valuable on a genuinely large canvas, where ordinary navigation would otherwise be slow.

To host a canvas

  1. Open the canvas you want to share.
  2. Select Host.
  3. Copy the generated lobby address.
  4. Send that address to the people who should join.
  5. Make sure participants are using compatible versions, especially if the host is on v0.6.0.

To join a canvas

  1. Open InfiniPaint.
  2. Select Connect.
  3. Enter the lobby address supplied by the host.
  4. If the connection fails, check the host’s router and firewall settings before assuming the canvas or file is damaged.

Connections can fail because of local network configuration. The project operates one TURN relay server, but connections primarily depend on whether a direct STUN connection can be established between host and client. In practical terms, some networks will work immediately while restrictive routers, firewalls, or corporate networks may require troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a planning session or informal sketch collaboration, this model can be effective. For a business-critical workshop, keep local copies and agree on a compatible version before the session begins. Collaboration should be treated as a network-dependent feature, not as a guarantee that every pair of installations can connect.

Tablet support and a practical setup

InfiniPaint documents graphics-tablet support, including pressure-sensitive brush and eraser behavior. Pen smoothing and pen-button assignments are configurable, and pressure sensitivity can be disabled in the tablet settings if you prefer consistent-width strokes.

  • Move Beyond the Mouse: Huion Inspiroy H640P is a pen tablet that replaces your mouse for more natural, precise control. Freehand draw, take notes, or even play OSU—everything you do with a mouse, you can do better with a pen. The precise tip makes it ideal for detailed photo editing, graphic design, or signing PDF. Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.

A pressure-sensitive drawing tablet is therefore the most relevant accessory for people using InfiniPaint primarily for drawing, handwriting, or pressure-controlled line work. This is a category recommendation, not a claim that a particular tablet model has been independently tested with InfiniPaint.

As a representative option, Wacom’s official Intuos specifications describe the small CTL-4100 and Bluetooth CTL-4100WL models as pressure-sensitive pen tablets with a battery-free Wacom Pen 4K, compatibility across Windows, macOS, Android, and ChromeOS, and 4,096 pressure levels. Check the tablet manufacturer’s current compatibility information and your operating system before buying; the available evidence does not independently verify InfiniPaint on those specific models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Basic tablet troubleshooting

  1. Confirm that the tablet works in the operating system or the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility.
  2. Check whether InfiniPaint detects the pen and whether pressure sensitivity is enabled.
  3. Try disabling pen smoothing temporarily if strokes feel delayed or unusually soft.
  4. Review pen-button assignments so a mapped button is not unintentionally switching tools.
  5. Test with a simple brush before diagnosing a complex canvas or multiplayer session.
  6. Install the tablet manufacturer’s current driver only after confirming that your operating system requires it.

Do not assume that PC-repair or driver-updater software is required. Start with the tablet manufacturer’s settings, operating-system permissions, InfiniPaint’s tablet options, and ordinary firewall or driver checks. General-purpose repair utilities are optional troubleshooting tools, not part of the InfiniPaint installation.

Platforms and installation

Windows

The official download page provides a Windows x86_64 installer and a portable build. The project recommends the installer for most users because it associates .infpnt files with InfiniPaint. Choose the portable package when you specifically need a self-contained application; its configuration is stored alongside the executable.

macOS

The download page lists an Apple Silicon build. Project installation notes contain a later edit lowering the stated macOS minimum from macOS 26 to macOS 11, but that information appears in an older release-history page. Check the current release asset and documentation before assuming that a particular macOS version is supported.

Linux

Linux users are directed toward Flathub, which is useful when automatic updates are preferred. x86_64 and arm64 Flatpak bundles are also available. The application is described on Flathub as a collaborative infinite-space, infinite-zoom canvas for note-taking and drawing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android

An Android APK is available, but the official download page labels Android as beta. v0.6.0 adds Android file importing and sharing through the system file selector. Treat the Android build as useful for experimentation and mobile access rather than assuming it has the same maturity or behavior as the native desktop builds.

Web browser

The browser build is compiled from C++ to JavaScript with Emscripten and requires a WebGL2-capable browser. It is a convenient way to try InfiniPaint without installing anything, but the project warns that it may be less reliable than native builds. Use a native build where possible for important work, large canvases, or regular collaboration.

Saving, storage, and export

InfiniPaint uses its own .infpnt canvas format. Save the native file when you need to preserve the editable canvas, layers, objects, text, and spatial arrangement. An exported image is a presentation or interchange result, not a substitute for the source document.

v0.6.0’s mesh-based storage for brushstrokes and lines uses more disk space while reducing the memory required to load them. That is a useful trade-off for large canvases, but it means that native files may become larger after saving or converting work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Export formats

You can export selected canvas regions as:

  • PNG: useful for lossless raster output and transparency-oriented workflows.
  • JPG: useful when a smaller photographic-style raster file is acceptable.
  • WEBP: useful when your downstream tools support it.
  • SVG: useful for vector-oriented output, subject to InfiniPaint’s SVG limitations.

Raster screenshots can be generated at selected dimensions, but the available memory and the capabilities of the eventual image viewer or editor impose practical limits. InfiniPaint may be able to create an extremely large raster export that another application cannot open, edit, or display reliably.

SVG export has separate constraints: its resolution is not adjustable, and grids are not displayed in the SVG output. If the grid is part of the visual design, use a raster export or confirm the result before distributing the file.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Eraser behavior: an important v0.6.0 distinction

Older or basic eraser behavior removes complete objects. That is different from pixel-style partial erasing. In v0.6.0, the new Erase details mode can remove portions of supported brushstroke and line meshes, and the release adds an option controlling whether erasing is finalized in real time.

Do not assume that every object on the canvas supports partial erasing. Text, imported images, arbitrary files, and other object types may still behave differently from brushstrokes and lines. If you need a destructive edit, keep a duplicate or rely on undo until you have confirmed the behavior for that object type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Customization and navigation

InfiniPaint supports remappable keybindings and custom UI themes. These options matter more on a large canvas than they might in a small sketching utility: frequent panning, zooming, tool switching, and location changes can benefit from a layout and shortcut scheme that matches your input device.

The right-click quick menu provides rapid color selection and canvas rotation. Saveable color palettes reduce the need to repeatedly recreate a working set of colors. Together with bookmarks, layers, and the grid, these features help make the unusually large workspace manageable.

Where InfiniPaint fits—and where it does not

It is a strong choice for

  • People who dislike fixed page boundaries
  • Visual thinkers who combine notes, diagrams, and sketches
  • Collaborative brainstorming and shared drawing sessions
  • Large spatial diagrams and scale studies
  • Users who want native desktop software and an open-source project
  • Tablet users who want pressure-sensitive drawing in a zoomable workspace

It is less suitable for

  • Production workflows that require the extensive image-editing ecosystem of Photoshop
  • Illustrators who need the mature brush, animation, color-management, or publishing systems of specialized art software
  • Users who need guaranteed cloud synchronization and version history
  • Teams that cannot coordinate application versions for multiplayer sessions
  • Projects involving very large raster assets on machines with limited memory
  • People who need Android to be a fully stable, desktop-equivalent release

Its strongest position is as a spatial drawing and thinking tool. Calling it a universal replacement for established professional painting applications would set the wrong expectations.

Open-source status and project maturity

The public repository identifies InfiniPaint as a C++ project under the GPL-3.0 license. The project describes substantial areas as being under active rewrite. Pull requests are not currently being accepted, while issue reports, bug reports, and feature requests are welcome.

The relatively early release numbering, browser reliability warning, Android beta status, networking caveats, and active rewriting all point to a project that is still evolving. That is not automatically a reason to avoid it, but it is a reason to keep backups, test the workflows you depend on, and avoid assuming that behavior or compatibility will remain unchanged between releases.

The project provides donation options through GitHub Sponsors and Liberapay. Its stated uses include development time and operating costs such as web hosting, the TURN relay server, and Apple developer-program membership.

A sensible first-session workflow

  1. Choose a native build if available. Use the web version for a quick trial, but prefer Windows, macOS, Linux, or Android builds for regular work.
  2. Create a small test canvas. Try a brushstroke, text box, imported image, selection transform, bookmark, and export before starting a major project.
  3. Set up your input. If using a tablet, test pressure, smoothing, and pen buttons. A mouse is sufficient for diagrams and basic notes.
  4. Organize early. Create layers or folders for background grids, references, notes, and drawing content.
  5. Place bookmarks. Add bookmarks to important zones rather than relying on memory to navigate the whole canvas.
  6. Save the native file. Preserve the .infpnt source before exporting images.
  7. Export a small sample. Confirm that PNG, JPG, WEBP, or SVG produces the result your next application expects.
  8. For collaboration, standardize versions first. Do not mix v0.6.0 with older network-incompatible releases.

Verdict

InfiniPaint is worth trying if your work benefits from a canvas that behaves more like a navigable visual world than a sheet of paper. Its combination of unlimited zoom, layers, formatted text, imported files, grids, bookmarks, tablet input, and real-time lobbies gives it a distinctive role in the painting and visual-planning space.

Install the native version when possible, keep the editable .infpnt file, and treat exports and collaboration as bounded by memory, format, network, and version compatibility. With those qualifications, InfiniPaint is an unusually capable open-source canvas for sketches, notes, diagrams, and shared visual thinking—not a general-purpose replacement for every professional painting application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is InfiniPaint really unlimited?

The application does not impose a normal zoom-in or zoom-out boundary, so the canvas is effectively unlimited for navigation. Performance, memory, display resolution, export formats, and the applications opening exported files still impose practical limits.

Is InfiniPaint free and open source?

The public repository identifies it as GPL-3.0-licensed open-source software. The project also provides donation options through GitHub Sponsors and Liberapay.

Can InfiniPaint work offline?

Yes. Offline drawing and note-taking are supported; online collaboration is an additional mode rather than a requirement.

Can multiple people draw together in InfiniPaint?

Yes. One user hosts a lobby and shares its address, while others connect using that address. Participants can see live drawing, use chat, view the player list, and jump to another participant’s location. Router and firewall settings can prevent connections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does InfiniPaint support Android?

Yes, an Android APK is available, but the official download page labels Android as beta. The v0.6.0 release adds Android file importing and sharing through the system file selector.

Can InfiniPaint export SVG?

Yes, selected regions can be exported as SVG. SVG export has separate limitations: resolution cannot be adjusted and grids are not displayed in the SVG output.

Does the eraser remove parts of a stroke?

In v0.6.0, the Erase details mode can erase portions of supported brushstroke and line meshes. The traditional eraser may remove complete objects, and partial erasing should not be assumed for every object type.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: InfiniPaint is best for large, navigable visual work—diagrams, notes, planning boards, sketches, and collaborative drawing. Its infinite canvas and spatial tools are genuinely distinctive, but Android remains beta, the browser build may be less reliable, multiplayer requires compatible versions, and very large assets can still hit memory and export limits.
