Affinity is no longer limited to a six-month free trial. The six-month promotion applied to the older Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher suite when it was announced on July 8, 2024. On October 29, 2025, Canva announced an all-new Affinity that combines vector design, photo editing, and page layout in one application and is described as free for everyone, with no recurring Affinity subscription required.
The practical advice is therefore different from the old headline: download the current Affinity application through the official Canva/Affinity route, create or use a free Canva account if prompted, and verify the live platform list before installing. The launch announcement covered Mac and Windows and said iPad was coming soon, but platform availability can change.
What happened to the six-month Affinity offer?
Affinity did offer its creative suite free for six months. That promotion was announced on July 8, 2024, and covered Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher for Mac, Windows, and iPad. The promotion did not require a purchase after the trial period.

The original announcement is preserved in Affinity’s newsroom archive. Canva’s later product announcement is the relevant source for the current free model. Both dates matter because pages repeating the old headline can now give readers the wrong impression.
What is the new Affinity app?
The former product line separated three major types of creative work:
- Affinity Designer: vector illustration, logos, icons, branding, and other scalable artwork.
- Affinity Photo: photo correction, retouching, compositing, masking, and pixel-based image editing.
- Affinity Publisher: page layout for brochures, reports, books, magazines, and other print or digital publications.
Canva’s new Affinity brings those disciplines together in one application. Its workflows are organized around Vector, Pixel, and Layout work. The names Designer, Photo, and Publisher remain useful when explaining what each area does, and the Affinity learning portal continues to use that terminology, but the product structure has been consolidated.

Is Affinity really free?
According to Canva’s October 2025 announcement, the core Affinity application is free for everyone and free forever. That is different from a time-limited trial.

There is an important distinction around Canva-linked features. Canva says that Canva AI features inside Affinity are included for users with a Canva premium account. The basic Affinity application is free; access to optional Canva premium or AI capabilities should not be confused with a requirement to pay for Affinity itself.
Because product policies and feature availability can change, check the live Affinity or Canva product page at the time of download for the current account, platform, and feature requirements.

How to download the current Affinity
- Go to the official Affinity/Canva product or download page rather than relying on an old trial article or an unofficial installer.
- Choose the current Affinity application and check whether your operating system is supported.
- Sign in with an existing Canva account, or create a free Canva account if you do not have one. Canva says existing users can activate Affinity with their account and new users can create a free account to download it.
- Install the application and open it. If a Canva premium feature is shown, treat that as an optional account-linked capability rather than evidence that the core application has become a six-month trial.
At launch, Canva announced availability for Mac and Windows and said that iPad was “coming soon.” That wording should not be treated as a permanent platform statement. Confirm the live download page for iPad availability in your country before planning a tablet-only workflow.
What can you use Affinity for?
The consolidated application is aimed at a broad range of creative and publishing tasks, including:
- illustrations and digital paintings;
- logos, icons, lettering, and brand graphics;
- photo retouching and compositing;
- masking and brush-based image work;
- brochures, reports, books, and magazines;
- portfolio pages and other designed documents.
Vector work is appropriate when you need artwork to remain clean at different sizes, such as a logo or sign. Pixel work is better suited to photographs, painted textures, retouching, and compositing. Layout tools bring text, images, and graphics together into pages. Keeping those workflows in one application can reduce the need to move a project between separate design, photo, and publishing programs.

File compatibility for Adobe-oriented workflows
Canva says the new Affinity supports formats including PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, and IDML, along with other formats. That is relevant if you are migrating from Adobe-oriented software, opening older creative files, or exchanging artwork with someone using a different application.

Before committing to a large project, open a representative copy and inspect fonts, masks, effects, transparency, linked assets, text flow, and page breaks. Keep the original file untouched until you have confirmed that the imported version behaves as expected.
What you need—and what you do not
You do not need a Wacom tablet, an external drive, a colorimeter, or a specialized Affinity book to use the application. A normal supported computer and enough storage for your projects are the starting requirements. The research available for this article does not establish a single hardware specification that should be presented as mandatory.
Optional hardware for illustration and retouching
A pressure-sensitive pen tablet can be worthwhile if you draw, paint, mask, retouch, or use brush-based tools frequently. The Wacom Intuos drawing tablet is one relevant option: Wacom documents compatibility with Windows, Mac, Android, and ChromeOS, a battery-free Pen 4K, small and medium active drawing areas, and programmable ExpressKeys on Windows and Mac. It is an optional input device, not an Affinity requirement.
A mouse or trackpad remains sufficient for many layout, selection, typography, and vector tasks. Consider a tablet when pressure control and a more natural drawing motion would materially improve your work.

If Affinity feels slow on Windows
Do not begin by assuming that Affinity itself is defective or that a cleanup utility will solve every slowdown. First check the ordinary causes:
- available disk space, especially on the drive holding project files or temporary data;
- memory pressure and other applications running at the same time;
- graphics and system-driver status;
- pending Affinity, Windows, or system updates;
- the size and complexity of the document, including very large images, many layers, effects, or embedded assets.
Back up important projects before deleting temporary files or changing system settings. If the problem is broader than Affinity—such as persistent disk-space pressure, instability, or general Windows maintenance issues—Outbyte PC Repair is a possible troubleshooting utility to investigate. Outbyte describes it as a Windows tool that can identify system issues, clean temporary or unused files, optimize performance, and address some stability problems. Its own materials also describe it as complementary to antivirus software, not a replacement for antivirus protection.
This is a conditional Windows maintenance suggestion, not an Affinity recommendation. Outbyte does not establish that the utility improves Affinity performance on every computer. Review proposed changes before applying them, preserve backups, and check the current product page for supported Windows versions, pricing, and any trial terms because those commercial details can change.

The Layout workflow may be useful for readers preparing books, manuals, portfolios, brochures, or other publications. A sensible process is to establish page size and margins first, define typography and recurring elements, place images at an appropriate resolution, and export a proof PDF before ordering or publishing anything.
Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing is a separate publishing destination worth considering if you are preparing an Affinity-designed book. Amazon’s KDP documentation covers eBooks, paperbacks, and hardcovers, as well as preparation for print and digital publishing. KDP is not an Affinity feature or an official integration claim; you should follow the current KDP specifications for trim size, bleed, margins, file format, cover files, and digital conversion.
What this update does not prove
The free announcement does not by itself establish that Affinity matches Adobe feature-for-feature, performs better on a particular computer, installs at a particular speed, or handles every legacy file flawlessly. No hands-on testing was performed for this article, so those claims would be speculation.
The safest conclusion is narrower and more useful: the old six-month promotion was real, but it is not the current story. The redesigned Affinity is presented by Canva as a free, consolidated creative application, while platform support and optional Canva-linked features should be checked against the live product information before you begin a project.
