Stable Diffusion 3 and Stable Diffusion 3 Turbo became available through Stability AI’s Developer Platform API on April 17, 2024. The same period brought the prospect of Stable Assistant, a simpler user-facing application. The API and assistant were complementary but distinct: one targeted developers embedding image generation, while the other targeted people who wanted to create without building software.
On April 17, 2024, Stability AI announced that Stable Diffusion 3 and Stable Diffusion 3 Turbo were available through the Stability AI Developer Platform API. The announcement was an API-access milestone, not the immediate open release of the model weights. Stability AI said it was working toward a future self-hosting option while also positioning Stable Assistant as a simpler, consumer-facing way to create and edit media.
That distinction is important. The API was for developers embedding image generation into software and workflows; Stable Assistant was the application layer for people who did not want to build an integration. The original headline describes that April 2024 product moment. It should not be read as a current launch announcement: Stability AI later deprecated the original SD3.0 API identifiers and rerouted them to SD3.5 equivalents.
What Stability AI actually launched
The April release covered two hosted models:
- Stable Diffusion 3: the main model in the new family.
- Stable Diffusion 3 Turbo: a faster variant intended for lower-latency generation.
Both were made available through Stability AI’s Developer Platform API, delivered in partnership with Fireworks AI. At that point, the company described hosted API access as available while saying that model weights for self-hosting would become available through a Stability AI membership in the near future. In other words, an API customer could call the model remotely, but the announcement did not mean that anyone could immediately download and run the full SD3 family on a personal computer.

The API launch followed a February 22, 2024 early-preview announcement. During the preview, Stability AI described an SD3 family spanning models from roughly 800 million to 8 billion parameters and said the system combined a diffusion-transformer architecture with flow matching. The range mattered commercially: it suggested that “Stable Diffusion 3” referred to a family of models rather than one fixed-size checkpoint.
Stable Assistant was a different product
Stable Assistant was positioned as a user-facing creative assistant, not as another name for the API. A developer using the API would authenticate requests, send generation parameters, receive image data, and build the surrounding interface, workflow, storage, moderation, and billing logic. A Stable Assistant user would work through a ready-made application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsContemporary reporting described Stable Assistant as a friendly chatbot built around Stability AI’s image and text technologies, including Stable Diffusion 3 and Stable LM 2 12B. The practical division was straightforward:
| Need | More appropriate route |
|---|---|
| Generate images without writing code | Stable Assistant or another finished application |
| Add image generation to a website, product, or internal tool | Stability AI’s API |
| Control infrastructure and run a model locally | A compatible self-hosted model and hardware, subject to its license |
Stable Assistant also evolved beyond the narrow April framing. In July 2024, Stability AI said it had added image Search & Replace and music generation using Stable Audio, while describing Stable Image Ultra as based on Stable Diffusion 3. The current product page presents Stable Assistant as a broader creation and editing tool covering image, audio, and 3D work. It lists technologies such as Stable Image Ultra, Stable Audio 2.0, Stable Fast 3D, and Stable LM 2 12B. Calling the current product simply “the SD3 chatbot” is therefore misleading.
Why Stable Diffusion 3 attracted attention
MMDiT and separate image-language representations
Stability AI’s March 5, 2024 technical announcement highlighted a Multimodal Diffusion Transformer, or MMDiT, architecture. The company said the model used separate weight sets for image and language representations. Its stated goal was to improve the way the model interpreted text and rendered written language, areas where earlier image generators often struggled.
Stable Diffusion 3 was also described as using flow matching alongside the diffusion-transformer design. At a high level, flow matching trains a model to learn a smoother transformation between noise and a finished image. That description explains the direction of the research, but it does not by itself guarantee faster generation, better quality, or lower hardware requirements for every deployment.

Typography and prompt adherence
Stability AI said its human-preference evaluations showed SD3 competing with DALL-E 3 and Midjourney v6, particularly in typography and prompt adherence. The company’s technical summary went further, reporting that SD3 outperformed DALL-E 3, Midjourney v6, and Ideogram v1 in those evaluation categories.
Those are vendor-reported evaluation results, not an independent industry benchmark. They are relevant evidence of what Stability AI was claiming about the model, but they should not be presented as proof that SD3 would always beat those systems. Image quality depends on the model variant, prompt, resolution, editing workflow, sampling settings, and evaluation method.

Nor did the announcement establish flawless lettering, anatomy, or instruction following. Better typography and prompt adherence were comparative claims from human evaluations—not a guarantee that every sign, label, multi-subject composition, or complex spatial instruction would be rendered correctly.
What the API meant for developers
The hosted API removed the need to provision a GPU and install an inference stack. A development team could instead call Stability AI’s service from an application and concentrate on the product layer: prompt design, image workflows, user permissions, content handling, result storage, and usage controls.
The current Stability Platform documentation describes REST v2beta as the primary API service. Requests require an API key in the Authorization header. Image-generation requests use multipart/form-data, and the response can be returned as image bytes or as base64-encoded JSON, depending on the request’s Accept header.
A minimal request therefore has this general shape:
POST [current Stability Platform image-generation endpoint]
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY
Content-Type: multipart/form-data
Accept: image/* # or the documented JSON/base64 response
prompt: "your image description"
The endpoint and model identifier should be copied from the current Stability documentation rather than from an April 2024 code sample. Model names, availability, request fields, response formats, and pricing can change. In particular, historical examples using sd3-large, sd3-large-turbo, or sd3-medium should not be treated as the current model catalog.
Credits and cost
Stability AI’s current getting-started material describes credits as the billing unit. New users may receive 25 free credits through Google sign-in, while additional credits are described as costing $1 per 100 credits. The pricing material also states that one credit equals $0.01 and warns that prices can change. The amount charged for a particular generation depends on the current model and operation, so developers should check the live pricing page before estimating production costs.

Current status: SD3.0 is no longer the active API path
As of April 17, 2025, Stability AI deprecated the SD3.0 APIs. Its release notes say that calls using sd3-large, sd3-large-turbo, and sd3-medium were automatically rerouted to corresponding SD3.5 equivalents at no additional cost. The current platform documentation lists SD3.5 Large, SD3.5 Large Turbo, and SD3.5 Medium as the active model choices.

This creates an important editorial and technical rule: an article or application written around the 2024 SD3 launch needs a current-status check before publication or deployment. Do not hard-code an old model name just because it appears in an archived announcement. Verify the live identifier, supported parameters, pricing, and migration behavior in the current documentation.
What happened to the open models?
The April API announcement and the later open release were separate events. On June 12, 2024, Stability AI released SD3 Medium weights under the Stability Non-Commercial Research Community License and described a route toward commercial licensing for larger-scale commercial users. That was the later open-weight milestone; it was not proof that the entire SD3 lineup had been openly downloadable on April 17.

It describes a $1 million annual-revenue threshold for free commercial use of listed Core Models. Because the applicable terms can differ by model, organization, revenue, and use case, commercial users should read the current license rather than rely on either the 2024 announcement or a summary written for a different model version.
API, Stable Assistant, or local inference?
The choice is mostly about control and convenience:
| Option | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted API | Fastest route to product integration; no GPU fleet to operate; model updates handled by the provider | Per-use cost, network dependency, provider limits, and changing model identifiers or terms |
| Stable Assistant | Accessible interface for direct creation and editing; no programming required | Less control over infrastructure and application behavior; current features may extend beyond SD3 specifically |
| Local or self-hosted model | More control over data, workflow, and inference environment | Requires compatible hardware, installation, maintenance, model-specific licensing, and performance tuning |
Hardware for local deployment
Readers considering the later SD3 Medium open release may investigate a high-VRAM GPU for local Stable Diffusion work. A high-VRAM NVIDIA RTX graphics card is relevant to local inference because image-generation workloads need substantial GPU memory, especially at larger resolutions or with additional control and editing components.
That hardware is not required for the hosted API or Stable Assistant. Buying a GPU makes sense only if you want to run a compatible model on your own computer and have checked the model’s memory requirements, operating-system support, drivers, and license. Stability AI’s own compute discussion included testing an 8-billion-parameter SD3 model on Intel Gaudi 2 and NVIDIA A100 hardware; those are observations from the company’s infrastructure testing, not a guarantee of consumer performance on any particular RTX card.

Prompting resources
Better prompt construction can help users communicate subjects, composition, style, lighting, and text requirements, but no guide can guarantee correct lettering or faithful rendering. A Stable Diffusion prompt book can be useful as a learning resource, provided the edition is checked for its date and whether it covers SD3.5 or only earlier Stable Diffusion workflows. AWS educational material has referenced Stable Diffusion prompt guides and a Stable Diffusion Prompt Book, but a specific current edition should not be assumed from that reference alone.

Stability AI’s models also became available through managed enterprise infrastructure. On September 4, 2024, AWS announced that Stable Image Ultra, Stable Diffusion 3 Large, and Stable Image Core were available in Amazon Bedrock, initially in the US West (Oregon) region. AWS described SD3 Large as a balance between speed and output quality for high-volume digital assets, while Stable Image Ultra was aimed at higher-quality photorealistic work.

On December 19, 2024, AWS announced Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large availability in Amazon Bedrock, with US West availability stated at that time. AWS’s more recent documentation says other Stability AI models in Bedrock are being deprecated and identifies SD3.5 Large and Stability Image Services as the supported path described there. Enterprise teams should therefore verify the current AWS region, model access, model ID, pricing, quotas, and deprecation notices before designing around a specific Bedrock entry.
For organizations already operating on AWS, Stable Diffusion on Amazon Bedrock may be worth comparing with a direct Stability API integration. Bedrock can simplify alignment with an existing AWS security, billing, and governance environment, but it is not automatically cheaper or more capable. The right choice depends on region, latency, compliance requirements, model availability, and the services already used by the team.

What the headline got right—and what it did not prove
The “Stable Assistant effort looms” framing captured a meaningful competitive move: Stability AI was making its flagship image technology available both as an embeddable developer service and as a more approachable application. Those routes addressed different audiences and reduced the gap between model research and everyday creative use.
But the announcement did not prove that Stable Assistant was a full general-purpose competitor to ChatGPT. It did not establish adoption, revenue, or product-market fit. Nor did the API availability guarantee that SD3 would produce perfect typography, anatomy, or prompt adherence. The defensible conclusion is narrower: on April 17, 2024, Stability AI opened hosted API access to SD3 and SD3 Turbo while continuing work toward broader model-weight availability, and it was simultaneously developing a consumer-facing assistant around its wider generation and editing stack.
Practical checklist before using SD3-family services
- Decide where the model belongs. Use the API for an integration, Stable Assistant for direct use, or local inference for infrastructure control.
- Check the current model catalog. The original SD3.0 API identifiers were deprecated in April 2025 and rerouted to SD3.5 equivalents.
- Read the current pricing. Credits, operation costs, quotas, and free-credit offers may change.
- Read the applicable license. The later SD3 Medium release terms and the current Community or Enterprise framework are not interchangeable assumptions.
- Test text-heavy prompts. Compare actual results for your typography, layout, language, and multi-subject requirements instead of relying only on vendor evaluations.
- For local inference, verify hardware first. Check VRAM, drivers, operating-system support, inference software, and expected resolution.
- For AWS deployment, verify the region and model ID. Bedrock availability and supported Stability AI models have changed over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did the Stable Diffusion 3 API launch mean the model was open source?
No. The April 17, 2024 announcement provided hosted API access to Stable Diffusion 3 and SD3 Turbo. Stability AI said model weights for self-hosting would become available later. SD3 Medium was released under a research community license on June 12, 2024, a separate later event.
What is the difference between Stable Assistant and the Stable Diffusion API?
Stable Assistant was a finished user-facing creation tool, while the API was a developer service. The current Stable Assistant product covers image, audio, and 3D generation and editing, so it should not be described as merely an SD3 chatbot.
Can developers still use the original SD3 API model IDs?
The original SD3.0 API identifiers were deprecated on April 17, 2025 and automatically rerouted to SD3.5 equivalents according to Stability AI’s release notes. New integrations should check the current documentation rather than copy an old SD3 model ID.
Do I need an NVIDIA GPU to use Stable Diffusion 3?
No. A GPU is relevant only to local or self-hosted inference. Hosted API users and Stable Assistant users do not need to purchase a graphics card.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Stable Diffusion 3 became available through Stability AI’s hosted API on April 17, 2024, while Stable Assistant represented a separate, user-facing product direction. The original SD3.0 API identifiers are now legacy entries that were deprecated and rerouted to SD3.5 in April 2025, so current developers should verify live model names, prices, regions, and license terms before building or buying hardware.
