Facebook changed its logo — see if you can tell the difference

Facebook’s logo changed in September 2023, but the refresh was intentionally subtle. Here are the differences between the old and new icon, wordmark and brand system.

Yes—Facebook changed its logo and wider visual identity in September 2023. The update was deliberately subtle: the familiar blue icon and lowercase white “f” stayed, while the blue became deeper, the “f” received small proportion and spacing adjustments, and the “Facebook” wordmark was redrawn in Facebook Sans.

So if the app icon looked slightly darker rather than completely different, you probably noticed the real change—not a new Meta logo or a major Facebook feature update.

The comparison above is a visual guide, not a claim about exact color values. Facebook’s appearance can vary by device, app version, display settings and asset treatment.

The short version: the change is real, but it is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Contemporary coverage described the refreshed mark as difficult to spot at first glance. Facebook’s September 2023 announcement coverage placed the rollout around September 20–21, 2023.

What changed?

1. The blue became darker

The most noticeable difference is the icon’s color. The refreshed Facebook blue is deeper and more saturated than the preceding version, giving the app icon a stronger contrast between the blue field and the white letter.

Meta said the revised color was intended to create a bolder, more durable expression of the brand while improving visual accessibility and contrast. Those are Meta’s stated design aims; the available material does not establish an independently measured accessibility improvement.

  • Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
  • In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.

There is no reliable basis here for assigning an exact new HEX, RGB or Pantone value. The color can also look different because of display calibration, dark mode, accessibility settings, compression or the way an operating system presents an app icon.

2. The lowercase “f” was subtly redrawn

Facebook kept its defining white lowercase “f,” but adjusted the mark’s proportions, internal spacing and relationship to the blue background. Reports variously describe the treatment as flatter or as making the letter more prominent. The safest description is that the icon was refined for legibility at small sizes.

That distinction matters: this was not a new symbol. The silhouette and concept remained immediately recognizable, which is why many people can use Facebook for weeks without consciously noticing the update.

3. The “Facebook” wordmark changed too

Quick comparisons often focus only on the app icon, but the 2023 refresh also changed the wordmark. The “Facebook” lettering was redesigned using Meta’s custom Facebook Sans typeface, with the stated goal of improving legibility and creating a more consistent treatment across Facebook surfaces.

Small typographic differences are easier to see side by side than in a paragraph: examine the shape, spacing and rhythm of the letters rather than looking only for a change to the capital “F.”

4. The update covered more than the logo

Meta presented the work as the first phase of a refreshed Facebook identity system, not merely a replacement app icon. The wider system included an expanded palette anchored in Facebook blue, along with updated visual elements such as reaction imagery. Its stated goals included accessibility, consistency, exploration and connection across Facebook touchpoints.

In practical terms, that means a user may notice related changes in interface colors, typography or reaction visuals even when the app icon itself looks nearly identical.

Why did Facebook change the logo?

Meta’s explanation centered on four design problems:

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • Accessibility: stronger contrast between the “f” and its background.
  • Legibility: a mark and wordmark that remain clear at different sizes and on different surfaces.
  • Consistency: a more unified visual language across Facebook’s products and touchpoints.
  • Flexibility: a broader color system that can support more interface and brand applications.

Meta also described the refresh as a bolder and more enduring expression of the Facebook brand. An editorial reading is that the restrained approach protected one of the world’s most recognizable social-media symbols while modernizing its details. The available evidence does not support stating that the logo was changed specifically to attract younger users.

Facebook did not change to the Meta logo

The Facebook app still has its own identity. Its logo is the blue icon with the white lowercase “f,” accompanied where appropriate by the Facebook wordmark.

Meta is the name and corporate brand of the parent company. That separation dates to 2019, when the company introduced distinct corporate branding while continuing to use Facebook as the identity of its social network. Meta’s explanation of that change is available in its official 2019 company-brand announcement.

Facebook and Meta logo timeline

  1. Before 2019: Facebook’s app identity and the company’s corporate identity were more closely associated.
  2. 2019: Facebook’s parent company introduced separate Meta corporate branding.
  3. September 2023: Facebook refreshed its own icon, wordmark, colors and related visual system.
  4. 2023–present: the refreshed Facebook icon remains the current reference in available logo materials as of August 16, 2026.

Did the logo update change how Facebook works?

No evidence in the reviewed coverage indicates that the logo refresh itself changed Facebook’s core functionality, account system or policies. It was a visual-identity update, not a product announcement.

That does not mean every interface change seen at the same time came from the same release. Facebook can separately test layouts, colors and features by app version, platform, region or account. A different-looking screen should not automatically be attributed to the logo refresh.

Why your Facebook icon may not match someone else’s

Inconsistent screenshots and app icons do not necessarily indicate another redesign. Common explanations include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • different app versions or staggered asset rollouts;
  • an old icon retained in a device cache;
  • screenshots or articles using outdated files;
  • display calibration, color profiles or compression;
  • dark-mode or accessibility settings;
  • platform-specific icon treatments; and
  • regional or account-level interface experiments.

For that reason, do not treat every darker Facebook icon found online as proof of a separate change. Compare dated, official assets where possible.

Which Facebook logo should you use?

If you need the logo for a website, presentation or publication, use Meta’s official Facebook app logo resources rather than redrawing the mark or downloading an unverified third-party file.

Follow the supplied brand guidance, preserve the logo’s proportions and do not modify the letterform, colors or surrounding clear space. Official assets may also carry trademark and usage restrictions, so check the current terms for your intended use.

Bottom line

Facebook really did change its logo in September 2023—but it did not replace the iconic lowercase “f,” rename the app or turn Facebook into Meta. Look for the deeper blue, the subtly refined and flatter “f,” and the updated Facebook Sans wordmark. The smallness of those changes was the point: Facebook refreshed a familiar identity without making it unrecognizable.
