Night mode activates automatically when a supported iPhone detects a low-light scene. Open Camera in Photo mode, wait for the Night mode icon to turn yellow, tap the shutter, and keep the phone completely still until the countdown ends.

Night mode can make dark scenes brighter and reveal more detail, but it is not a magic “bright and sharp” setting. Its longer, computationally processed capture is sensitive to both camera shake and moving subjects.

What Night mode does

Night mode is Apple’s automatic low-light photography feature. When the Camera app detects insufficient light, it combines a longer capture with image processing to produce a brighter photograph with more visible detail. It is designed for still photos, not as a guarantee that movement will be frozen.

Because the camera may capture for several seconds, a moving person, pet, car, tree branch, or stream of water can look soft, doubled, or ghosted even if the iPhone itself is perfectly steady.

Apple says general Night mode is available on supported iPhone 11 and later models. That does not mean every iPhone in this range supports every Night mode feature: selfies, Portrait, Time-lapse, lenses, and ProRAW have separate model requirements. Check Apple’s current Night mode compatibility information for your exact iPhone.

How to take a Night mode photo

  1. Open the Camera app.
  2. Select Photo.
  3. Frame your subject, preferably with the main 1x camera to start.
  4. Wait for the Night mode icon to appear and turn yellow.
  5. Tap the shutter button.
  6. Hold the iPhone still until the on-screen countdown finishes.
  7. Review the image and retake it if movement caused blur.

On newer supported iPhones, Apple also documents using the Camera Control to trigger the shot. Button locations and labels can vary by iPhone model and iOS version.

What the yellow moon icon means

The Night mode icon appears at the top of the Camera interface when the scene is dark enough. It turns yellow when Night mode is active. A number beside the icon indicates the approximate capture duration.

The countdown is not simply a delay before the photo is taken. After you press the shutter, it shows the remaining capture time. Keep the phone and, when possible, the subject still until it reaches the end.

How to change the Night mode exposure time

To adjust the duration:

  1. In Camera, tap the arrow above the viewfinder, or open the camera controls.
  2. Tap the Night mode button.
  3. Move the slider to choose one of the available durations.
  4. Choose Max when you want the longest option currently available.
  5. Tap the shutter and keep the iPhone steady during the countdown.

After the shutter is pressed, the slider becomes a countdown timer. If you need to interrupt the capture, tap Stop below the slider. The resulting photo may be darker or less detailed because the exposure ended early.

When should you use Max?

Max means the longest exposure the Camera app currently offers for that particular scene and device. It is not a universal, fixed number of seconds.

  • Use it for: static buildings, landscapes, interiors, night skies, and city scenes when the phone is mounted or firmly supported.
  • Avoid it for: moving people, pets, traffic, sports, or anything that must remain crisp.

A shorter exposure usually produces less blur but a darker result. A longer exposure can reveal more shadow detail while increasing the risk of camera shake and subject movement.

How to keep Night mode photos sharp

Stability is the most important practical factor.

  • Hold the iPhone with both hands.
  • Tuck your elbows toward your body.
  • Press the shutter gently rather than jabbing the screen.
  • Rest the phone against a wall, table, railing, or other secure surface.
  • Use a tripod or stable phone mount for long exposures.
  • Do not reposition or touch the iPhone until the countdown ends.

If crosshairs appear in the viewfinder, Apple says they indicate detected movement. Aligning the crosshairs can help reduce movement and improve the result. See Apple’s Night mode camera guide for the current interface.

Use the timer to avoid tapping movement

A timer is useful when the iPhone is mounted or resting on a surface. Open Camera Controls, or swipe up from the camera viewfinder, tap Timer, and choose 3s, 5s, or 10s. The timer reduces movement caused by pressing the shutter; it does not stop a person, pet, vehicle, or other subject from moving during the exposure. Apple’s current camera-tool instructions are available here.

Practical settings for common night scenes

City streets and buildings

Start with the 1x camera and a moderate duration. Keep architectural lines and the horizon level, and use a wall or tripod if the countdown lasts several seconds. Bright signs, lamps, windows, and headlights may become blown out if you raise exposure too far, so take another version with a shorter duration or lower brightness.

Indoor rooms

Place the phone on a table or other stable surface, especially for interiors with little window light. Include a lamp or window as a compositional element, but avoid pointing directly into an intense light unless flare is intentional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

People and portraits

Ask people to hold still and choose a shorter available duration when possible. A brighter nearby light can produce a sharper result than a very long exposure in a dark room. Night mode Portrait is limited to selected Pro models, so it is not available on every iPhone 11-or-later phone.

Pets and moving subjects

Night mode cannot eliminate motion blur. Use more ambient light, reduce the exposure duration, take several frames, or switch to normal Photo mode if the subject is moving quickly. A perfectly steady phone does not make a moving subject sharp.

Moon and stars

A tripod is especially helpful for the night sky, but Night mode does not automatically create astrophotography-quality images. The moon’s brightness, city light pollution, clouds, the selected lens, and the phone’s hardware all affect the result. Avoid assuming that the longest exposure is always the best one.

Focus and brightness controls

Tap your subject in the viewfinder to focus. An exposure control appears beside the focus area; drag it up to brighten the image or down to darken it. Raising exposure can reveal shadows but may wash out lamps, windows, signs, and other bright areas. Lowering it can preserve highlights and a more natural nighttime mood. Apple explains these controls in its camera-tools guide.

Lens and mode limitations

Night mode performance and availability can vary by model, lens, zoom level, and scene brightness. The main 1x camera is the most reliable starting point. Use the Ultra Wide or telephoto camera only when Night mode remains available and the scene is still bright enough. Excessive digital zoom is particularly likely to produce a dark or noisy result.

If switching lenses makes Night mode disappear or makes the view substantially darker, return to 1x. Do not assume that every lens or Camera mode supports the same feature.

Flash and Live Photos: an important conflict

Apple says flash and Live Photos are not active while Night mode is being used. You can turn either on manually, but doing so deactivates Night mode.

Choose based on the result you want:

  • Night mode: generally preserves the atmosphere of the available ambient light.
  • Flash: can illuminate a nearby subject, but may create harsh highlights and flatten the scene.
  • Live Photos: may be useful for a moving moment, but enabling it turns Night mode off.

Can you turn Night mode off?

Yes. When the Night mode control is visible, tap it to turn the effect off or back on for the current shot.

To preserve the last Night mode choice rather than returning to Auto, go to Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings > Night Mode. Turning Night mode off for one photo and preserving that setting are separate actions. Apple documents the setting in its camera-preservation guide.

Night selfies, Time-lapse, and Portrait

Night selfies

On supported models, switch to the front-facing camera, frame yourself, and take the photo while holding the iPhone steady. Night selfie support has a narrower model list than general Night mode and changes as Apple adds iPhones, so verify your specific model on Apple’s current support page.

Night mode Time-lapse

On selected models, open Camera, swipe to Time-lapse, tap the shutter, and leave the iPhone mounted and undisturbed. Apple recommends a tripod for Night mode Time-lapse; handheld use is not a normal workflow.

Night mode Portrait

Night mode Portrait is available only on selected Pro models, including supported Pro generations beginning with iPhone 12 Pro. Open Camera, swipe to Portrait, follow the on-screen prompts, and tap the shutter. It is not a general iPhone 11-or-later feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why Night mode is not appearing

Work through these possibilities in order:

  1. The scene is not dark enough. Night mode appears automatically only when the camera detects low light.
  2. The iPhone is unsupported. General support begins with supported iPhone 11-and-later models, but special modes have narrower requirements.
  3. Flash or Live Photos is enabled. Either can deactivate Night mode when manually turned on.
  4. You are using an incompatible mode or lens. Return to Photo mode and try the main 1x camera.
  5. Night mode was manually disabled. Tap the Night mode control if it is visible, and check Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings > Night Mode.
  6. The Camera app may be stuck. Close and reopen Camera, then try again.
  7. Software may need updating. Install the latest iOS version available for your device, but an update cannot add unsupported camera hardware features.

These cases are different: Night mode may be unavailable because the hardware or mode does not support it, inactive because the scene is bright enough, or disabled by another camera control.

Should you use ProRAW?

ProRAW is an optional workflow for photographers who plan to edit exposure, color, or white balance. Apple says it combines RAW image information with iPhone image processing and is supported on iPhone 12 Pro and later Pro models with iOS 14.3 or later, subject to model-specific controls.

ProRAW files are larger and require more storage and editing knowledge. It does not automatically make a Night mode photo sharper, remove motion blur, or stabilize the camera. It is not available in Portrait mode, Live Photos, or video. Read Apple’s ProRAW overview and ProRAW camera guide before making it part of your workflow.

One-screen Night mode checklist

  • Use Photo mode and start with the 1x camera.
  • Wait for the Night mode icon to turn yellow.
  • Choose a shorter duration for moving subjects.
  • Use Max only for static scenes and a stable phone.
  • Hold the iPhone with both hands, or use a solid surface or tripod.
  • Consider the 3-, 5-, or 10-second timer when mounting the phone.
  • Keep the phone still until the countdown ends.
  • Check both motion blur and bright clipped highlights.
  • Remember that enabling flash or Live Photos turns Night mode off.
