Wplace is a persistent collaborative pixel-art canvas laid over a world map. Instead of drawing on a private file, users place colored pixels on real locations, then watch communities turn cities, borders and landmarks into flags, murals, memes, fan art and digital graffiti.
It is inspired by Reddit’s r/place, but Wplace is not an official successor. Its defining difference is that the canvas is intended to remain active: artwork can be defended, changed, overwritten or cleaned up by other users.
What is Wplace?
Wplace is an interactive world map that doubles as a shared pixel canvas. Users zoom into a location, choose a color and place an individual pixel. That mark immediately becomes part of a public image that everyone else can see and modify.
There are no private boards at the heart of the experience. The appeal comes from contributing to a common space where a single pixel may be insignificant alone but meaningful when hundreds or thousands of people coordinate around it. The project describes itself as a real-time collaborative canvas overlaid on a map of the world. Read the official terms before contributing.

Wplace reportedly launched in July 2025. The project remained active in 2026: its community guidelines were updated in June 2026, and its Android listing shows an update dated June 25, 2026.
How Wplace works
- Open the official service at wplace.live.
- Move around the world map until you find a location or existing artwork.
- Zoom in far enough to see the pixel grid clearly.
- Choose an available color.
- Place a pixel in the selected position.
- Wait until the interface allows another placement.
The exact recharge or cooldown can vary by the current product, account state or rules. The authoritative material reviewed here does not establish one reliable number, so claims that every user always gets a particular cooldown should be treated cautiously.
For a larger image, participants normally work from a shared plan: a small grid reference, agreed colors and a division of responsibilities. Even then, mistakes are easy. A misplaced pixel can distort a face, flag or letter, while another group may occupy the area before a design is complete.
What people make
Wplace’s content varies by location and time, but the format supports a remarkably broad range of work:
- National, regional and community flags
- City landmarks and local symbols
- Video-game, anime and other fan art
- Memes, jokes and recognizable internet characters
- Political messages and protest art
- Abstract patterns and collaborative murals

Why it feels more engaging than another social feed
The “making the internet fun again” description is a framing device, not a measurable fact. Still, Wplace explains why many people find older internet-style participation so satisfying:
- Low barrier to entry: one pixel is enough to join.
- Visible consequences: contributions appear in a public environment rather than disappearing into a feed.
- Collective authorship: the finished picture belongs to a group, not just one creator.
- Ongoing tension: work can be protected, altered or erased, creating a game-like feedback loop.
- Discovery: browsing the map becomes a way to explore what strangers are building.
- Identity: cities, fandoms, countries and online communities can mark territory together.
- Unpredictability: the canvas is never completely finished.
That combination turns passive browsing into participation. You are not simply looking at a finished artwork; you are entering a public object that other people are changing at the same time.

Both projects combine art, coordination, conflict and spectacle. Wplace is better understood as an independent project inspired by the same collaborative-pixel idea, not as an official continuation of r/place.
Is it art, a game or a social experiment?
It can be all three, depending on how you use it.
As art, Wplace produces murals and visual records of online culture. As a game, it introduces limited placement opportunities, competition, defense, progression and territorial disputes. As a social experiment, it shows what groups choose to preserve, erase, celebrate or fight over. It also functions as a social platform without relying primarily on profile pages and endless scrolling.
Rules new users need to know
Wplace’s community guidelines, updated in June 2026, prohibit explicit, hateful or illegal content. They also prohibit griefing, multiple accounts, bots, scripts, browser automation, exploits and other unfair automation.

The important distinction is that painting over another user’s work is not automatically forbidden. Ordinary territorial competition and some forms of overwriting are allowed. The problem is destructive activity intended solely to harass or frustrate people. Transparent-pixel cleanup is also permitted in circumstances described by the official guidelines.

The terms of service separately prohibit unauthorized automation, attempts to bypass cooldowns or technical limits, abusive multi-accounting and automated extraction or replication of substantial portions of the canvas. Do not use bots, pixel scripts, automation services or unofficial browser tools to gain an advantage. A tool marketed as a “helper” is not necessarily approved by Wplace.
What could get you banned?
- Using bots, scripts or browser automation to place pixels
- Operating multiple accounts for an advantage
- Trying to bypass cooldowns or anti-abuse controls
- Uploading prohibited material
- Deliberately disrupting other users’ work solely to harass them
- Using proxies, virtual machines or similar methods in ways that trigger anti-abuse systems
Because anti-abuse systems may consider patterns of behavior rather than a single action, the safest approach is straightforward: use the official interface, one account and manual placements.
The uncomfortable parts: impermanence, conflict and ownership
Your artwork is not guaranteed to survive
Persistence means the map remains available; it does not mean your contribution is protected. A design may be overwritten in a normal territorial dispute, damaged by mistakes or removed during cleanup. If you need a permanent, exportable master file, create it somewhere else first.
The map can contain controversial material
A public world map may include political slogans, sexual material, hateful content, arguments over national borders and imagery that is offensive or disturbing. Moderation rules exist, but the experience is not the same as a tightly controlled classroom or family art tool.

Read the content license
According to Wplace’s terms, users retain certain rights in original contributions but grant Wplace a broad, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable and sublicensable license to host, reproduce, display, distribute, reformat and create derivative works from submitted content, including for commercial and advertising purposes.
That matters if you are an illustrator, commissioned artist or rights holder. Do not upload art you do not have permission to use, and do not assume that placing pixels gives you exclusive control over a collaborative image. A composition may involve many contributors and have no simple single-owner answer. Review the current terms before submitting commercially valuable work; the terms discussed here were listed as last updated November 18, 2025 and may change.

There is no responsible basis for calling any third-party online service universally safe or private. Wplace requires interaction with an external website, so review its account, moderation, payment and content-license terms before participating.
- Use a unique password rather than reusing one from email or banking.
- Share only the personal information needed to use the service.
- Be suspicious of unofficial tools requesting account credentials or browser access.
- Check the current rules and privacy information before installing a companion app.
The official Android listing identifies the developer as WPLACE – PAINT THE WORLD LTDA., says the app includes in-app purchases and provides developer-supplied data-safety disclosures. Those disclosures are not an independent privacy audit. Availability may also vary by country, device and account.

Is Wplace still active?
Available evidence indicates continued operation in 2026, but it does not establish a current active-user count. The official guidelines were updated in June 2026, and the Android app listing was updated on June 25, 2026. The listing also describes real-time map painting and ongoing community activity.
For historical context, an Associated Press report published in September 2025 attributed a figure of more than 10.6 million users worldwide to a co-founder. That is a dated, attributed number—not a current count for 2026.
A sensible first contribution
Start by observing rather than immediately trying to claim territory. Open Wplace, browse several regions and zoom in on an existing image. You will quickly learn how dense the canvas is, how other users treat local artwork and whether the location suits your interests.

Confirm the intended position and color before placing the pixel, then wait for the interface’s recharge indicator. If the work is changed afterward, that is part of the platform’s design unless the behavior crosses into prohibited griefing.
Who should try Wplace?
Wplace is a good fit if you enjoy communal internet events, pixel art, maps, local identity, fandoms or unpredictable collaborative projects. It also suits casual users who want to contribute without learning specialized creative software.
Skip it or use caution if you need private editing, version history, reliable preservation, exportable originals or exclusive ownership. It is also a poor fit for anyone unwilling to encounter political or controversial content, or tempted to automate a large project.
Alternatives
- Reddit’s r/place: better for a temporary, concentrated community event.
- Traditional pixel-art software: better for precise control, private work and exportable files.
- Collaborative whiteboards: better when live drawing and discussion matter more than territory.
- Offline or self-hosted canvases: better for schools, organizations and communities needing control over access, moderation, retention and licensing.
The verdict
Wplace is fun for the same reason it is messy: the artwork is public, shared and never fully under one person’s control. Its world-map canvas adds local identity and geopolitical symbolism to the familiar r/place formula, while its persistence gives communities more time to build something together.
Just treat it as a living public space, not a private art portfolio. Use the official site, participate manually, expect your pixels to change and read the current terms before uploading valuable work.
