Canva relaunched Affinity on October 30, 2025 as a single desktop application that combines vector design, photo editing, and page layout. The core app is free on macOS and Windows, with no Affinity subscription or perpetual-license payment required, according to Canva. However, users need a free Canva account, and selected AI features require a Canva premium plan.
What the new Affinity app is
The relaunch consolidates the former Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher workflows into one application. Their main functions now appear as three studios:
- Vector: illustration, drawing, and vector design.
- Pixel: raster image editing and compositing.
- Layout: typography, page design, and publishing.
Users can switch between these studios and create customized workspaces containing the tools they use most. This is more than a free bundle of the old applications: Canva has combined their workflows and interface into one desktop program.

The app supports multi-page documents, master pages, shared text styles, advanced typographic controls, and common professional file formats including PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, and IDML. Format support does not guarantee perfect conversion of every font, linked asset, effect, mask, blend mode, or document structure.

Is Affinity really free?
Canva says the full core Affinity toolset is free “forever.” The precise interpretation is important:
- Core design software: free, including the main vector, pixel, and layout tools.
- Canva account: required to download and activate the app, although a free account is sufficient.
- Canva AI: features such as Generative Fill, Expand & Edit, and Remove Background require an eligible Canva premium account.
So “free Affinity” is accurate for the core application, but not for every Canva-connected feature. Canva’s “free forever” language is a company promise, not an independently guaranteed permanent product policy.

Platforms and download steps
Canva launched the new Affinity app for macOS and Windows. It described an iPad version as forthcoming, but the launch announcement does not establish a current iPad release date or feature parity.
- Visit affinity.studio.
- Choose the download for your desktop operating system.
- Sign in with an existing Canva account or create a free one.
- Install the application and choose Vector, Pixel, or Layout.
- Open an existing project or create a new document.
Independent testing found that Affinity can be used offline after initial sign-in, but activation, updates, downloads, Canva collaboration, and AI services may require an internet connection. Offline availability should therefore be understood primarily as a benefit for local core editing, not as a guarantee for every feature.
What happens to existing Affinity apps and files?
The old Designer, Photo, and Publisher concepts are represented in the new app’s studios. Existing users should expect a changed interface and combined workflow, even though Canva says the underlying tools and precision workflows remain familiar.
Supported files can be brought into the new application, but users migrating from Adobe or older Affinity projects should keep their originals and test representative documents first. Before relying on the new app for production, check:

- linked images and missing assets;
- masks, transparency, effects, and blend modes;
- color profiles and print output;
- complex layouts and imported Adobe structures.
Export a proof PDF before committing an important job. TechRadar’s review found that Adobe imports generally worked but that more complex projects could contain flaws.
Can it replace Adobe?
Affinity is a credible alternative for desktop work centered on image editing, vector illustration, marketing graphics, brochures, reports, posters, and other page-based documents. It is especially attractive to freelancers, students, illustrators, and publishers who want capable tools without a recurring Affinity subscription.
It is not a universal one-for-one Adobe replacement. Adobe may remain the better choice when a workflow depends on:
- exact Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign compatibility;
- Adobe plug-ins, scripts, automation, or enterprise processes;
- Lightroom-style photo cataloging and asset management;
- Premiere Pro, After Effects, or other Adobe production tools;
- specialized collaboration systems already built around Creative Cloud.
Affinity’s Pixel studio is primarily an image editor, closer to Photoshop than Lightroom. It does not provide a full photo-library catalog. Photographers who need organization and raw-processing workflows may want a dedicated tool such as Capture One alongside Affinity.

For narrower needs, Pixelmator Pro is a Mac-focused option, Inkscape is a free open-source vector tool, and Krita is better suited to digital painting than page layout or publishing. Adobe Creative Cloud remains the broader ecosystem, but it is subscription-based.

The app connects to Canva in two important ways. Premium Canva users can access selected AI tools through Canva AI Studio, and Affinity projects can be exported to Canva for collaboration, scaling, or publishing.
Later updates expanded that connection. An April 2026 Affinity update described:
- Canva Brand System integration for approved colors, fonts, imagery, and brand voice;
- Capture One workflows that can open layered
.affiles; - DaVinci Resolve support for native Affinity files and automatic refresh when edited;
- an Affinity AI Connector for Claude, free during its beta;
- free access to Cavalry motion-design and 2D-animation software through a Canva account.
These additions make Affinity more useful within a wider Canva ecosystem, but they should be distinguished from the original October 2025 relaunch. Beta features can change in availability, limits, or pricing.

For video work, DaVinci Resolve is a specialized video-production platform rather than a replacement for Affinity’s vector, pixel, or layout tools.
Who should use Affinity?
Choose Affinity if you want professional desktop design tools without a recurring Affinity payment, work mainly on Mac or Windows, need vector, raster, and layout capabilities in one app, and can accept a Canva account and some workflow differences from Adobe.
Be cautious if your organization prohibits third-party accounts, you need exact Adobe file fidelity, depend on plug-ins or scripts, require a mature photo catalog, or want video, motion, and 3D production in the same main suite.
The core app costs nothing, so the safest migration strategy is to install it alongside your existing software, open real projects, compare exports, and switch only after the files and workflow meet your requirements.

Readers who only need Affinity’s core tools do not need Canva Pro. A premium Canva plan is relevant when they also want Canva AI, premium assets, brand systems, collaboration, or publishing features. TechRadar listed an individual Canva plan at $15 per month or $120 per year in its 2026 review, but prices and plan names vary by region and can change. Check Canva’s current pricing page before subscribing.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Affinity is now an unusually capable free desktop alternative for core illustration, image editing, and page layout. It is not a universal Adobe replacement: the Canva account requirement, premium AI layer, file-fidelity risks, missing cataloging features, and dependence on specialized tools still matter.
