Google Sans Flex is available through Google Fonts. Google’s open-source variable typeface can be downloaded for desktop use or embedded on a website, and it offers six adjustable design axes: weight, width, optical size, slant, grade, and roundedness. Google says Google Sans and Google Sans Flex were made open source in 2025.
Download it from the official Google Fonts specimen page. Before redistributing or modifying the files, read the license included with the current download.
Where to download Google Sans Flex
The official download is the Google Sans Flex page on Google Fonts. This is the preferred source rather than an unofficial mirror or a third-party archive.

For desktop use:
- Open the official specimen page.
- Use the page’s download control. Google may provide the family as a ZIP archive.
- Extract the archive.
- Install the included font files through your operating system’s font manager.
- Close and reopen design applications that were running during installation.
- Search for Google Sans Flex in the application’s font menu.
Google Fonts’ interface and button labels can change, so use the current controls shown on the specimen page. Do not assume that every release contains a particular number of static files.

What makes it a “Flex” typeface?
Google Sans Flex is a variable font. Instead of limiting users to a small set of separate files such as Regular, Medium, and Bold, a variable font stores a range of related design possibilities in one family. Compatible software can interpolate between those settings.
Google describes the family as a next-generation version of its brand typeface, developed with Font Bureau and Pathfinders. Its six advertised axes are:

The exact numeric ranges should be taken from the current font metadata or Google Fonts’ generated CSS. They can change between releases, and the existence of an axis does not mean every application exposes it in its normal font controls.
Using Google Sans Flex on the web
For a website, the simplest route is Google Fonts’ web-embedding workflow. Open the specimen page, choose the desired styles or variable settings, then copy the generated stylesheet link or @import rule. Google documents this approach in its Google Fonts developer documentation.

Self-hosting
Self-hosting gives a team more control over caching, privacy, and deployment. You can use the downloaded files directly or use a convenience package such as Fontsource’s variable Google Sans Flex package, which provides web-font files and CSS. Fontsource is a distribution convenience, not the primary official source of the typeface.

Test fallback behavior, page-load performance, and layout shifts. A variable font can replace numerous fixed styles, but it is not automatically smaller than every possible static subset.
Is Google Sans Flex free for commercial use?
The available Google Fonts repository record identifies Google Sans Flex as released under the SIL Open Font License. Treat the license bundled with your current download as authoritative, because font terms and included notices can differ between families and releases.
An OFL-licensed font can generally be used in commercial designs, websites, applications, and branding work. However, font-file permission is not permission to use Google’s trademarks, logos, product marks, or visual identity in a way that suggests affiliation or endorsement. Using the typeface does not make a product an official Google product.

If you modify or redistribute the font, retain the required notices and check any reserved-font-name provisions in the actual license text. Do not assume that a modified version may use any name you choose.

Google Fonts availability is not the same as a GitHub source release
Google Sans Flex is available through Google Fonts, but that does not automatically mean its complete upstream source materials are present in the main Google Fonts GitHub repository.
A Google Fonts issue opened on November 18, 2025 recorded that the family was on Google Fonts and labeled under the SIL Open Font License while its files and source descriptions were not present in that repository at the time. The issue lists a Q3 2026 milestone. A second issue, #10077, was closed as a duplicate and should not be treated as a separate release announcement.
The practical distinction is:
- Available to download from Google Fonts: yes.
- Confirmed as a normal family directory in
google/fonts: not established by that available record. - Independently rebuildable from public upstream source: do not assume this unless an official source release provides the necessary files.
Do not confuse it with every Google typeface
Google Sans Flex is not automatically the same as Product Sans, Google Sans Text, an earlier Google Sans variant, or the type used in a particular Google logo or product interface. Google’s design history describes Google Sans Flex as a new variable-font development rather than a universal replacement for every Google typeface.
That matters when trying to reproduce an interface. A Google product may use another family, a particular combination of variable-axis settings, custom tracking and line height, platform-specific rendering, or fallback fonts. Downloading Google Sans Flex alone will not exactly reproduce Android, ChromeOS, Pixel, Gemini, or another Google interface.

It is also a typeface family—not a package of Google logos or permission to imitate Google branding. A commercial logo may be possible under the applicable font license, but trademark and unfair-competition questions remain separate from font licensing.
When Google Sans Flex is a good choice
Choose it when a project benefits from a flexible sans-serif family that can cover interface and display roles, or when designers need intermediate settings rather than a few fixed weights. The grade axis can be useful when text needs to appear darker without substantially changing its width, while roundedness can create a softer treatment without downloading a separate rounded family.
It may be a poor fit when:
- Old design software or devices must be supported.
- The design system depends on a small, predictable set of static files.
- The team requires a documented public source repository and reproducible build pipeline.
- The project needs language coverage that the current release does not provide.
- The brand should avoid an aesthetic that feels close to Google’s products.
Variable-font support also varies. Some applications expose only weight, width, and italic-like controls; others ignore custom axes such as grade and roundedness. Test the actual tools and platforms used by the project.
Alternatives
Google Sans Code
Google Sans Code is designed for coding environments. Its official repository describes Roman and Italic variable fonts with a weight axis from 300 to 800. It is a more targeted choice for editors and terminals, not a direct replacement for Google Sans Flex’s expressive interface and branding use.
Roboto Flex
Roboto Flex is a mature, highly configurable Google Fonts alternative with a public source repository and broad existing adoption. Its visual character is Roboto-derived, so it is a workflow alternative rather than an exact visual match.
Conventional sans-serif families
Roboto, Inter, and other well-documented conventional families may be easier to deploy when compatibility and predictable static styles matter more than six-axis control. They should be compared visually before being described as substitutes.
If the font does not appear after installation
- Make sure the archive was extracted and that you installed the actual font file, not only a license or metadata file.
- Close and reopen the design application.
- Confirm the family appears in the operating system’s font manager.
- Try it in a second application to identify whether the problem is application-specific.
- If the archive appears incomplete, download it again from the official Google Fonts page.
If you want a rounded treatment but cannot find a separate rounded download, look for software that exposes the ROND axis. A static rounded instance may need to be exported from a compatible font editor or design application, and the exact process depends on that software.
