Remote access to an iPad, screen mirroring, and unsupported emulation are not the same as installing Procreate on Windows. They may be useful in specific circumstances, but they do not provide a native Windows workflow and can introduce latency, connection problems, or unsupported behavior.

Adobe Fresco: closest broad match for a Procreate-style workflow
For a Surface user or another Windows artist working with a pressure-sensitive pen, Fresco is the best first application to try. It is designed around drawing and painting rather than general-purpose image editing, and Adobe advertises raster, live, and vector brushes, unlimited layers, symmetry, animation tools, motion paths, and presets.
Fresco is particularly suitable for sketching, painting, watercolor-like effects, and projects that move between raster and vector artwork. Adobe also promotes synchronization with Photoshop and Illustrator workflows.

Windows 11 on ARM needs special attention. Adobe lists specific supported Surface ARM devices and says Fresco is currently unavailable on other Windows ARM hardware. Do not assume that every Snapdragon Windows 11 computer will run it.
Krita: strongest free desktop painting option
Krita is the strongest recommendation for artists who want capable painting tools without an Adobe account or subscription. It is free and open-source in its official desktop distribution, supports Windows, and offers extensive brush customization, layers, masks, and tools suited to illustration, concept art, and texture work.

That is a usability trade-off, not a lack of painting capability.
Download Krita from its official site or an official store listing. Store editions may show a price as a convenience or donation build, so compare the distribution route before purchasing rather than assuming every listing has the same terms.
Clip Studio Paint: best for comics, manga, and animation
Clip Studio Paint is generally the better choice when “drawing” means comic pages, manga, clean line art, lettering, perspective guides, speech balloons, or production animation. It supports Windows 11 and offers PRO and EX editions.

Check Sketchbook’s current Windows 11 support, edition, licensing, and feature limits directly. It is unlikely to be the strongest choice for complex comics production, advanced animation, or demanding file interchange when compared with Clip Studio Paint or Krita.
Photoshop: for broader Adobe work

Can Windows apps open Procreate files?
Not directly in the native format. A .procreate document is unique to Procreate. Windows alternatives cannot be expected to open it as an editable native project.
Procreate can import and export formats including PSD, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, PDF, MP4, HEVC, HEIC, OBJ, and USDZ, with format-specific limitations. Procreate says PSD export and import can preserve compatible locked layers, layer groups, filters, and blend modes, but vector and text layers may be rasterized.
A safer migration checklist
- Keep the original
.procreatefiles. They remain your best editable backup in Procreate. - Export layered PSD files for projects that need continued editing on Windows.
- Export flattened PNG or TIFF copies for publishing and archival access.
- Export time-lapse video separately. Do not assume animation or time-lapse metadata will survive a PSD transfer.
- Rebuild brushes manually. Procreate brush libraries should not be expected to transfer perfectly to another application.
- Test a complex representative file before moving an entire library. Check blend modes, masks, adjustment behavior, text, vectors, effects, and animation.
A PSD export can preserve much of a layer-based workflow, but it cannot reproduce every Procreate-specific brush, effect, document behavior, or animation feature.
Windows 11 hardware checklist
Windows 11 compatibility by itself does not guarantee a good drawing experience. Two Windows 11 computers can feel completely different because of architecture, GPU support, pen protocol, drivers, palm rejection, and display latency.
- CPU architecture: Check whether the computer uses Intel/AMD or ARM. Fresco’s ARM support is limited to listed Surface devices.
- RAM and storage: Fresco’s documented baseline includes 8 GB of RAM and 5 GB of installation space; large canvases and layered files need additional working space.
- Graphics: Confirm the application’s GPU and DirectX requirements, especially on older integrated graphics.
- Pen pressure and tilt: Verify that your Surface Pen, Wacom pen, or other active stylus is supported and correctly configured.
- Palm rejection: A good pen application can still feel poor if the tablet or driver misreads your hand.
- Drivers and firmware: Update Wacom or manufacturer drivers, then test pressure curves, buttons, calibration, and mapping.
- Display type: A pen display lets you draw directly on the image; a screenless tablet is often cheaper but requires hand-eye coordination.
- Portability: A Surface or other pen-enabled tablet computer is closer to the iPad model. A desktop PC may require a separate Wacom, XP-Pen, or Huion tablet.
Relevant hardware makers include Microsoft Surface, Wacom, XP-Pen, and Huion. Choose the hardware around your existing setup: a Surface user may need only software and a compatible pen, while a desktop user may need a complete tablet or pen display.
How to choose without wasting money
- Identify the work first. Painting, comics, animation, vector illustration, and photo compositing do not have the same best tool.
- Check hardware before downloading. Confirm architecture, GPU, RAM, pen support, and drivers—especially on ARM devices.
- Test the input, not just the menus. Make short strokes at different pressures, rotate the canvas, undo with gestures, and try palm rejection.
- Open a real project. Use a layered PSD export from Procreate or a comparable file rather than judging an app with a blank canvas.
- Compare the long-term cost. Distinguish free software, store editions, perpetual licenses, subscriptions, and optional update plans.
- Keep portable exports. Save PSD, PNG, TIFF, and video copies so your work is not trapped in one application.
Bottom line
