Imagen 4 was a real Google image-generation model family, but it is not accurate to describe it as newly available now. Google announced Imagen 4 at I/O in May 2025 and later made its models broadly available through products including Gemini, Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, Vertex AI, Whisk, and selected Workspace tools. However, Google’s current documentation says the Imagen 4 API models were deprecated and scheduled to shut down on August 17, 2026. As of August 18, 2026, new projects should use Google’s currently supported Gemini image models instead.
What was Imagen 4?
Imagen 4 was Google DeepMind’s dedicated text-to-image model family. It generated images from written prompts, with an emphasis on photorealism, illustration, detail, prompt adherence, and text rendered inside images.
It was separate from Gemini’s native image-generation models. Imagen models were purpose-built image generators, while Gemini image models—sometimes marketed under names such as “Nano Banana”—were multimodal Gemini systems capable of conversational generation and image editing. Seeing an image-generation button in Gemini does not, by itself, prove that Imagen 4 is powering the feature.

Google’s Imagen overview and Imagen 4 model card describe the model’s intended uses, safety approach, and watermarking and verification features.
Imagen 4 availability: the important 2026 update
Imagen 4’s availability changed over time:
- May 20, 2025: Google announced Imagen 4 at Google I/O.
- May 2025: Initial access began across Google products and selected developer experiences.
- August 2025: Google announced general availability of Imagen 4 and Imagen 4 Fast in the Gemini API and Google AI Studio.
- August 17, 2026: Google’s current Gemini API documentation lists the Imagen 4 endpoints as scheduled for shutdown.
- August 18, 2026: That listed shutdown date has passed.
The original launch announcements remain useful for understanding what Imagen 4 was, but their “available now” language is historical. A legacy Google page, cached product reference, or old tutorial is not proof that an endpoint is still callable.
Check Google’s live Imagen model documentation and current pricing and lifecycle information before attempting access. Google products can have different retirement schedules, regions, account requirements, and interfaces, so the safest statement is that normal new Imagen 4 API development should no longer be assumed possible.
Was Imagen 4 available in Gemini?
Historically, Google said Imagen 4 was available through the Gemini app and other consumer products. That does not mean every image made in Gemini used Imagen 4, nor does it mean that the Gemini app still offers a selectable Imagen 4 option.

If Gemini currently shows an “Create image” or “Images” control, describe it as Gemini image generation unless Google explicitly identifies the underlying model. Google’s current documentation points developers toward newer Gemini image models rather than Imagen 4.

These were Google-documented Imagen 4 prices, particularly in Vertex AI pricing. They should be treated as historical or lifecycle-dependent figures—not as evidence that a retired endpoint can still be purchased. Google’s claim that Imagen 4 Fast could be up to 10 times faster than the previous model generation was a vendor claim, not an independent benchmark.
What Imagen 4 could do
Text-to-image generation
Imagen 4 converted written prompts into new images. It was suited to visual ideation, editorial artwork, marketing concepts, storyboards, product mockups, social-media assets, and thumbnail concepts.
Improved image text
Google emphasized better text rendering than earlier Imagen versions. This made signs, labels, posters, and title treatments more usable, but it did not make Imagen 4 a typesetting system. Text can still be misspelled, distorted, or inconsistently spaced. For a finished advertisement, book cover, presentation, or product graphic, generate the visual in the image model and add exact typography in a design application.
Styles, detail, and realism
Google described Imagen 4 as offering greater detail and realism, stronger prompt adherence, and more expressive visual styles than earlier versions. Those are Google’s documented product claims; they should not be interpreted as proof that Imagen 4 was objectively better than every competing image model.
Aspect ratios and resolutions
Documented output formats included:
- 1:1
- 3:4
- 4:3
- 9:16
- 16:9
Depending on the format and product, documented resolutions ranged from 1024×1024 to larger 2048-pixel and approximately 4K-class outputs. The Vertex AI documentation for imagen-4.0-generate-001 listed up to four returned images per text-to-image request, a maximum prompt length of 480 tokens, and a maximum submitted image size of 10 MB where image input applied.

Safety and watermarking
Imagen 4 included configurable safety settings, person-generation controls, and digital watermarking and verification features. The precise behavior depended on the Google product, model version, account, and safety configuration.

The documented Imagen 4 generation endpoint was primarily a text-to-image system. Google’s Vertex AI documentation listed several editing and customization functions as unsupported, including:
- Mask-based editing
- Mask-free editing
- Object insertion
- Object removal
- Outpainting
- Several style and subject-customization workflows
- Negative prompting
- Some product-image editing features
If a workflow depends on iterative edits, object replacement, compositing, or conversational image changes, a current Gemini image model or a dedicated image editor may be more appropriate.
Where was Imagen 4 available?

“Available in Gemini,” “available in Vertex AI,” and “available in the Gemini API” were never identical entitlements. They could involve different interfaces, quotas, billing, regions, and model versions.

What should developers use instead?
Google’s current documentation points developers toward newer Gemini image-generation models. Depending on the page and product context, Google names models such as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, and newer “Nano Banana” variants.
Google’s naming is changing quickly and is not perfectly consistent across its model pages, image-generation guide, and changelog. Do not hard-code one replacement as universally available. Instead, consult the current:
Native Gemini image models may be a better fit for conversational workflows because they combine image creation and editing with Gemini’s text and image understanding. Their billing may also use token- or resolution-based pricing rather than Imagen 4’s simple per-image rates, so recheck costs before migrating.

- Find the old model ID. Search your code, configuration, and deployment settings for an
imagen-4.0-...identifier. - Check the live lifecycle notice. Confirm whether the project is failing because of shutdown, region, quota, billing, or permissions.
- Select a currently supported Gemini image model. Use Google’s live documentation rather than an old tutorial.
- Update the model identifier and request format. Do not assume the replacement accepts identical parameters or returns identical response data.
- Recheck output behavior. Validate supported resolutions, aspect ratios, image counts, editing functions, safety settings, and watermarking.
- Recalculate cost and quota. A new model may use different billing units, rate limits, or subscription restrictions.
- Run regression tests. Compare prompt adherence, typography, subject consistency, image dimensions, latency, and failure handling before redirecting production traffic.
- Monitor after deployment. Watch error rates, quota responses, safety blocks, and model-lifecycle announcements.
Common Imagen 4 problems
The old model ID returns an error
The most likely explanations are endpoint shutdown, deprecation, unsupported region, missing billing or quota, or a required product migration. Check the live model documentation first, then test a supported replacement in a non-production project.
Gemini creates images but does not identify the model
Do not infer that the output came from Imagen 4. Product interfaces can conceal the underlying model and may change without preserving the old API model family.

The image contains incorrect words
Improved text rendering is not guaranteed typography. Keep prompts short and explicit, generate several variations, and add final text separately when spelling and layout matter.
The output differs between Google products
Variation can come from model versions, prompt rewriting, safety settings, resolution limits, post-processing, preview status, or account-level quotas. Compare exact model IDs and request settings where the product exposes them.
The workflow requires editing
Imagen 4’s documented generation endpoint was not designed for many mask, object-editing, or outpainting tasks. Use a current Gemini image model or an editor that explicitly supports the operation.
Is Google Flow a replacement for Imagen 4?
Not directly. Flow is a consumer-facing Google creative workspace for image, video, and visual-ideation workflows. Around August 16, 2026, its official page displayed a free tier with 50 daily Flow credits, Google AI Plus at $4.99 per month, Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month, and Google AI Ultra at $99.99 per month. Features, quotas, prices, and regional availability can change.

Who was Imagen 4 for?
Historically, Imagen 4 was useful for:
- Marketing concepts and campaign exploration
- Editorial illustrations
- Storyboards and visual development
- Product and packaging mockups
- Social-media and presentation assets
- Visual ideation
- High-volume thumbnail generation with Imagen 4 Fast
It was most effective as a concept-generation tool. Projects requiring precise brand typography, repeatable product geometry, exact edits, or a long-term API contract needed additional design tools, post-processing, or a different model.
Bottom line
Imagen 4 was an important Google image-generation release in 2025, with standard, Ultra, and Fast variants, strong text-to-image capabilities, multiple aspect ratios, and documented per-image pricing. But it should now be treated as a retired or no-longer-available API choice: Google listed August 17, 2026 as its shutdown date. Gemini may still generate images, but that does not establish Imagen 4 access. For new work, use Google’s current Gemini image-model documentation and verify the exact model, price, quota, and editing support before building around it.
