Figma’s AI expansion takes aim at Adobe, WordPress, and Canva—but doesn’t replace them

Figma’s Config 2026 announcements mark a shift from collaborative interface design toward a broader AI creative platform. Figma now wants one canvas to handle product design, code, motion, image editing, marketing assets, prototypes, and websites. That puts it in more direct competition with Adobe and Canva, while Figma Sites and Figma Make create a narrower overlap with WordPress.

The important distinction is that Figma is absorbing parts of these workflows—not replacing every specialist tool or the full WordPress publishing ecosystem.

The short version

• Figma is expanding fastest into collaborative creative production: design, prototypes, generated interfaces, code, motion, images, and marketing assets.
• Adobe remains stronger for specialist production, including advanced photo editing, vector illustration, video, audio, print, and mature desktop workflows.
• Canva remains easier for fast marketing and communication content, especially for non-designers.
• WordPress remains a CMS and publishing ecosystem. Figma can help create and publish some websites, but it does not replace posts, plugins, commerce, memberships, hosting choices, or editorial operations.
• Figma’s strongest advantage is the connection between structured design, collaboration, prototyping, and generated experiences.

What changed at Config 2026?

“Figma’s big AI update” is not one isolated release. It is a collection of capabilities that broadens what can live on the Figma canvas. Figma’s Config 2026 recap highlighted several major directions.

Figma agent

The Figma agent brings AI assistance into Figma Design. It is intended to help users work with designs more directly rather than switching to a separate chatbot or generation tool.

Rollout for eligible users began on June 24, 2026, but access is not necessarily universal. Availability can depend on plan, workspace, account type, administrator settings, geography, and rollout status. Figma’s AI tools documentation is the appropriate place to check a particular account.

Figma Make

Figma Make uses prompts to create functioning prototypes, interfaces, and builds. Figma had already moved Make and several AI capabilities toward general availability, and its release notes later listed GPT-5.6 availability in Make in July 2026.

That description needs careful interpretation. A prompt can produce a visual concept, an editable design, an interactive prototype, or generated code. Those are four different outcomes:

1. An idea: rough layouts, copy, or visual directions.
2. An editable design asset: layers, components, vectors, or images that can be refined.
3. An interactive prototype: a convincing demonstration of screens and behaviors.
4. Production software or a live site: maintainable, accessible, secure, deployable work.

Figma Make can shorten the path to the third outcome. It should not automatically be treated as delivering the fourth. A working demo may still lack authentication, data persistence, error handling, accessibility, testing, security review, performance optimization, or maintainable architecture. Weave tools

Weave targets repetitive image tasks such as replacing a background, adding a logo to a product image, or changing an image’s aspect ratio. Its significance is less about matching every feature in Photoshop and more about compressing a workflow: marketing teams can perform common edits without leaving the Figma canvas.

Access and credit treatment are plan-dependent, so teams should check Figma’s Config 2026 help documentation before budgeting around it.

Generative plugins

Figma says users can create tools for recurring tasks through prompts. That could become one of the most consequential parts of the strategy. A team might generate an internal utility for brand production, content transformation, data visualization, or design-system operations.

But generating a plugin is not the same as proving that it is reliable, secure, maintainable, or suitable for production. Teams still need code review, permission checks, testing, documentation, and an owner responsible for updates.

Code layers

Code layers make code a more native medium on the Figma canvas. The promise is a closer relationship between visual design and executable or interactive behavior, potentially reducing the distance between a designer’s intent and a developer’s implementation.

The risk is familiar from other AI coding workflows: generated code can be incomplete, fragile, inaccessible, difficult to version, or poorly suited to the existing application architecture. Engineering review remains essential.

Motion, shaders, and 3D

Figma Motion adds timeline-based and agent-assisted animation. Shaders and 3D transforms give the canvas richer visual effects. Together, these features strengthen Figma’s claim to be a general creative workspace rather than only a place for static interface screens.

They do not automatically make Figma a replacement for specialist motion, 3D, or video applications. A timeline inside a collaborative design tool is useful for interaction concepts and certain production tasks; it is not equivalent to the depth of a dedicated visual-effects or video workflow.

Figma Buzz

Figma Buzz is aimed at brand and marketing teams producing visual assets at scale. Its focus on repeatable, brand-consistent production creates Figma’s clearest direct overlap with Canva. It also connects marketing work more closely to the brand systems and product work already managed in Figma.

Why Adobe is the obvious comparison

Figma now touches several Adobe-adjacent categories:

Figma’s advantage is structural. It is browser-native, collaborative, deeply associated with components and design systems, and already connected to prototyping and developer handoff. A team can move from a product requirement to screens, interactions, brand assets, and an exploratory build in a shared environment.

Adobe’s advantage is depth. Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere Pro, and other Creative Cloud applications remain mature specialist tools for professional image, vector, video, audio, print, and motion production. Adobe also has a large installed base and Firefly integration across its applications.

So “Figma is taking on Adobe” is credible as competitive analysis, but misleading as a replacement claim. Figma is most threatening at the front end of creative production: ideation, collaborative design, rapid iteration, and connected prototypes. It is not necessarily the best tool for every specialist task that follows.

Adobe’s Firefly pricing also illustrates a different commercial model. As observed on August 16, 2026, Adobe listed a free tier, Firefly Standard at $9.99 per month, and Firefly Pro at $19.99 per month, with higher tiers offering more credits and application access. Promotions, credit allocations, and included applications are time-sensitive; consult Adobe’s current Firefly information and plan page before purchasing.

Why Canva may feel like the more immediate rival

Adobe competes for professional creative depth. Canva competes for the everyday job of producing a finished communication asset quickly: a social graphic, presentation, flyer, campaign variation, document, or lightweight video.

Canva AI 2.0 emphasizes conversational editing of existing layered work, brand changes, document creation, and transforming source material such as meeting transcripts into structured content. Its announcement positions AI as a way to modify and extend work rather than merely generate a blank image.

Figma’s opportunity is that marketing teams increasingly need assets connected to product launches, brand systems, and interface work. Figma Buzz can provide that bridge. Its challenge is complexity. Figma terminology and setup are generally better suited to people who understand structured design work, components, variables, and collaborative files. AI output still requires cleanup and judgment, and brand workflows may depend heavily on how libraries, templates, permissions, and review processes are configured.

Canva is usually the better starting point when non-designers need to create polished content without learning a product-design system. Figma is more compelling when the marketing work must remain connected to a product team’s underlying design language.

Is Figma really taking on WordPress?

This is the headline’s most overstated comparison. Figma overlaps with WordPress primarily in website creation, not in every aspect of website operations.

Where the overlap is real

• Designing websites and landing pages.
• Turning a concept into a functioning web experience.
• Reducing the handoff between design and implementation.
• Giving non-developers a path from an idea to a live page.
• Supporting website design and publishing workflows through Figma Sites.

Figma’s credible competitive claim is: it can shorten the distance between a designed website and a functioning website.

Where WordPress remains fundamentally different

WordPress is not simply a visual site builder. Depending on whether the user chooses WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress.org, it can provide a content-management system, posts and pages, taxonomies, themes, templates, plugins, SEO tools, commerce, memberships, hosting options, and a large third-party ecosystem.

Editors can update content repeatedly without returning to a design file. Organizations can build publishing operations around workflows, permissions, migration, integrations, and long-term content ownership. Those are CMS concerns, not just layout concerns.

Figma Design is a design and prototyping environment. Figma Make is a prompt-assisted way to create interactive builds and prototypes. Figma Sites addresses website creation and publishing. WordPress is a CMS and publishing ecosystem. Calling every AI website builder a CMS hides the decision that matters most: whether the site is primarily a visual experience or an ongoing content operation.

What Figma’s AI can—and cannot—deliver

Before switching tools, ask what output the project actually requires:

For any AI-generated result, also check whether it can use an existing design system, whether developers can inspect or export it, how ambiguous prompts are corrected, and how much iteration consumes in AI credits. A visually convincing result is not proof of responsive behavior, semantic markup, accessible interaction, or production-quality code.

Credits, governance, and the real cost

AI credits make Figma’s economics more complicated than a simple seat comparison. Figma has introduced controls for AI-credit usage and additional ways for teams to purchase credits beyond included allocations. Repeated generations, image operations, and model-intensive workflows may consume credits differently.

Before adopting AI-heavy workflows, administrators should determine:

• Which features consume credits.
• Whether credits are pooled by workspace, seat, or user.
• What happens when included credits run out.
• Whether administrators can restrict or disable features.
• Whether additional credits require manual purchase or can be bought automatically.
• How usage is reported and audited.

Figma says access varies by plan and account type, with special conditions for Education and Government accounts. Enterprises should investigate data handling, model-provider arrangements, retention, administrative controls, auditability, and opt-out settings. Figma announced ISO 42001 certification in July 2026, but that company announcement does not remove each customer’s own AI-risk, privacy, legal, and governance responsibilities. Figma reported that about 60% of paid customers with more than $100,000 in annual recurring revenue used Figma Make weekly in the three months ending March 31, 2026, up from more than 50% in the preceding quarter. That is a useful adoption signal, but it is a Figma-reported company metric—not an independent measure of market share, quality, or productivity. See the company’s Q1 2026 results.

Who should choose which tool?

Choose Figma when

• Your work begins with product, UX, UI, or interaction design.
• Designers, product managers, engineers, and stakeholders need to collaborate in the same files.
• Components, variables, design systems, prototypes, and developer handoff matter.
• You want generated experiences connected to the design source.
• Marketing assets need to remain close to product and brand systems.
• Your organization can manage AI access, credits, permissions, and review.

Choose Adobe when

• You need advanced photo retouching, vector illustration, desktop publishing, video, audio, or specialist motion production.
• Your team already depends on Creative Cloud applications.
• Professional production controls and established creative workflows outweigh the value of one shared canvas.
• AI generation must connect directly to Photoshop, Illustrator, Express, or other Adobe applications.

Choose Canva when

• Non-designers need to create finished assets quickly.
• Your main outputs are social graphics, presentations, marketing content, documents, or lightweight video.
• Fast onboarding and template variation matter more than granular product-design control.
• You do not want to maintain a sophisticated design system.

Choose WordPress when

• The core requirement is ongoing publishing and content management.
• You need posts, pages, taxonomies, plugins, SEO, commerce, memberships, or a broad ecosystem.
• Editors must update content frequently without returning to a design tool.
• You need long-term content ownership and operational flexibility.
• The project is more than a marketing landing page or interactive prototype.

Use several tools together when

The most realistic workflow for many teams is not replacement but division of labor: Figma for product design and prototyping, Adobe for specialist image or video work, Canva for high-volume communication assets, WordPress for publishing, and developers for production software. AI can accelerate exploration, but people still own the final decisions about design quality, accessibility, brand, legal compliance, security, and engineering.

The bottom line

Figma is trying to become the connective tissue between design, code, content, and publishing. Config 2026 makes that ambition clearer: Figma is no longer presenting itself merely as a collaborative interface-design tool.

Its strongest competitive threat is not that it will erase Adobe, Canva, or WordPress. It is that teams may no longer need to leave Figma for as many early-stage creative and product-building tasks. Adobe still wins on specialist depth, Canva on accessible content production, and WordPress on CMS breadth and publishing infrastructure. Figma wins when structured design, collaboration, prototypes, and generated experiences need to stay connected.
