Use File > Automate > PDF Presentation when each page is a separate image or Photoshop file. Use File > Export > Artboards To PDF when your pages are artboards in one Photoshop document. Use Save As > Photoshop PDF to save one document with Photoshop-specific PDF settings—not to automatically turn layers into pages.

These instructions apply to current desktop Photoshop; menu labels can vary by release, operating system, or localization.
Choose the right Photoshop workflow

Photoshop is best for image-led pages. For searchable text, complex document structure, forms, bookmarks, or long text-heavy publications, use a layout or PDF application instead.
Create a PDF from separate images
This is the fastest method for photo collections, proof sheets, image-based portfolios, lookbooks, and slide-like presentations.
- Open Photoshop.
- Choose File > Automate > PDF Presentation.
- Select Browse to locate and add your files. Or select Add Open Files to use documents already open in Photoshop.
- Arrange the pages by dragging files up or down in the list.
- To repeat a page, select it and choose Duplicate.
- Choose the available output and presentation settings.
- Select Save, choose a filename and destination, and confirm the PDF settings if Photoshop asks.
Open the finished PDF in a PDF viewer—not Photoshop—and check its page count, order, orientation, cropping, and image quality. Adobe describes this output as a generic PDF rather than a Photoshop PDF; reopening it in Photoshop rasterizes the presentation. See Adobe’s PDF Presentation documentation.
Export Photoshop artboards as one PDF
Use this workflow for designed pages such as presentations, brochures, portfolios, social-media sets, and mockups.
Prepare the document
Create one artboard per page. Give them numerical names so the intended sequence is obvious, such as 01-Cover, 02-Introduction, and 03-Portfolio. Save the PSD before exporting.
Export the artboards
- Choose File > Export > Artboards To PDF.
- Select the destination folder and enter a filename prefix.
- Choose Artboard Contents Only to limit each page to its artboard, or Include Overlapping Areas if artwork extending beyond the artboard must appear.
- Enable Export Selected Artboards only when you want a subset.
- Enable Include Background In Export when an artboard background must be included.
- Select Multi-Page Document for one PDF containing all artboards. Choose Document Per Artboard only when you want separate PDF files.
- Choose ZIP for lossless compression or JPEG for a smaller file with adjustable quality from 0 to 12.
- Enable Include ICC Profile when preserving the document’s color-profile information is important.
- Enable Include Artboard Name only if names should appear in the export.
- Use Reverse Page Order only when that is the required sequence.
- Select Run.
Open the resulting PDF in a viewer and verify that the number and order of pages match the artboards. Adobe lists these controls in its current Artboards To PDF documentation.

Save one Photoshop document as a Photoshop PDF
This is a different operation from assembling separate pages. It saves the current Photoshop document as a PDF and can preserve Photoshop-specific information.
- Choose File > Save As.
- Select Photoshop PDF as the format.
- Choose whether to preserve the color profile and layers.
- Select Save.
- Choose an Adobe PDF preset.
- Review the General, Compression, Output, Security, and Compatibility settings.
- Select Save PDF.
Preserving layers can keep the file editable in Photoshop, but it can make the PDF substantially larger. For a viewing or delivery copy, layers are often unnecessary; retain the layered PSD as the editable master. Consult Adobe’s Save as Photoshop PDF guide for the current dialog options.
Quality, color, and print settings
There is no single best compression or resolution setting for every PDF. Decide how the file will be used first.
- Digital sharing: Reduce unnecessary oversized images and use JPEG encoding or an appropriate PDF preset when a smaller download matters.
- Client proofs: Balance readable detail with a manageable file size. Inspect small text and fine lines before sending.
- Print: Set the correct page dimensions, resolution, bleed, and safe areas before export. Use the printer’s required color profile, PDF preset, and PDF/X specification where applicable.
- Editable source: Keep the PSD with layers. Do not preserve layers in the delivery PDF unless the recipient needs Photoshop editing.
ZIP is lossless; JPEG is lossy but may create a smaller file. An embedded ICC profile helps compatible applications interpret color, but it cannot guarantee identical color across every display, unmanaged viewer, printer, or conversion workflow. A multipage PDF is not automatically press-ready: color, bleed, transparency, resolution, and compression still need checking against the printer’s requirements.
Fix common problems
The pages are in the wrong order
In PDF Presentation, manually drag files into the required sequence. For artboards, rename them with numerical prefixes, check the artboard order, and make sure Reverse Page Order is disabled unless you need it. If the PDF is already exported, Acrobat can reorder the pages.
The PDF has separate files instead of one PDF
In Artboards To PDF, select Multi-Page Document, not Document Per Artboard.
The background disappeared
Enable Include Background In Export. This is especially important when the background is an artboard background rather than an ordinary painted or placed layer.

Artwork is clipped
Choose Include Overlapping Areas if content outside the artboard boundary must be exported. Otherwise, Artboard Contents Only limits the page to the artboard.
The PDF is too large
- Remove or resize unnecessarily oversized source images.
- Switch from ZIP to JPEG if some quality loss is acceptable.
- Lower JPEG quality gradually rather than choosing the lowest setting immediately.
- Use a suitable Photoshop PDF preset and compression settings.
- Do not preserve layers in the delivery copy unless required.
- Export a smaller proof copy while retaining a higher-quality production copy.
Colors changed
Check the document’s color profile, export settings, and the viewer or printer’s color-management behavior. Include the ICC profile when appropriate, but compare the PDF with the original in a color-managed workflow rather than assuming the checkbox fixes every mismatch.
Text is not selectable
Photoshop pages are fundamentally image-oriented, and text may be rasterized or embedded in a way that is not convenient to select. If searchable or editable text is essential, create the artwork in Photoshop and place or assemble it in a layout or PDF application.
The PDF Presentation command is missing
Confirm that you are using desktop Photoshop rather than Photoshop on the web or mobile, and check your release, operating system, workspace, and localization. If the command is unavailable, organize the pages as artboards or assemble already-exported files in Acrobat. Adobe Bridge is optional and is not required to add files directly from Photoshop.
Pages have different sizes or orientations
Mixed page dimensions may work for a digital presentation, but inspect the result carefully. They can be inconvenient for printing, imposition, or upload services that expect uniform pages.

- Confirm the page count.
- Check the cover or opening page.
- Check page order and orientation.
- Inspect artboard edges, crops, and overlapping content.
- Confirm backgrounds are present.
- Zoom in on small text and fine detail.
- Compare colors with the source.
- Confirm unwanted artboard names or filenames are absent.
- Open the PDF in a viewer other than Photoshop.
- Check the final file size before sending or uploading.
When Photoshop is not the best tool
Use PDF Presentation for separate image files, Artboards To PDF for designed artboards, and Save As > Photoshop PDF for one document that needs Photoshop PDF settings or preserved layers. Use Acrobat for PDF assembly and page management. Choose a dedicated layout application when the document needs substantial selectable text, document structure, bookmarks, forms, or professional page-layout control.

A browser-based tool such as Canva may be more convenient for template-led multipage designs, but it is a poorer fit for PSD-heavy, pixel-level, or Photoshop-specific production workflows.

Can Photoshop combine JPGs into one PDF?
Yes. Choose File > Automate > PDF Presentation, add the JPG files with Browse, arrange them, and save the presentation as a PDF.
Can I make a multipage PDF from Photoshop layers?
Not automatically. Layers are content within one document, not separate PDF pages. Create one artboard per page, export separate page files and combine them, or use another PDF organizer.

Can I keep Photoshop layers in the PDF?
Yes, when using Save As > Photoshop PDF, you can preserve layers. This increases file size and is usually unnecessary for a view-only delivery copy.
Can I edit the multipage PDF after exporting?
You can rearrange and manage pages in Acrobat, but Photoshop is not a general PDF page-layout editor. Keep the PSD or other source files for artwork edits.
Can I create a booklet in Photoshop?
Photoshop can create the page artwork, but booklet imposition and print specifications should be handled according to the printer’s requirements, often in a dedicated layout or PDF application.
