Apple Bought Pixelmator—and It Fixed One of My Biggest iPad Complaints

Apple brought Pixelmator Pro to iPad in 2026, delivering the layers, RAW tools, typography, vector editing, and Apple Pencil support users wanted—but only through Creator Studio and on newer iPads.

Apple eventually solved the iPad problem that Pixelmator fans had been waiting on: Pixelmator Pro for iPad launched in January 2026.

It is a serious, Apple-native image editor with layers, masks, RAW editing, vector tools, typography, Apple Pencil support, and broad file compatibility. But there is a catch that matters just as much as the app itself: on iPad, Pixelmator Pro is available through Apple Creator Studio, not as a standalone one-time purchase.

The original iPad complaint was about more than photo filters

The iPad has never lacked basic photo-editing software. Apple Photos handles everyday adjustments, and apps such as Photomator are designed around serious photography workflows.

The missing piece was a polished, intuitive tool for image manipulation: combining multiple images, working with layers and masks, designing posters, editing typography, drawing with an Apple Pencil, and making nondestructive adjustments without moving to a Mac.

That was the argument behind the original complaint published on November 3, 2024. Pixelmator Pro on the Mac offered the kind of approachable, Apple-focused experience many iPad owners wanted. Photoshop for iPad was powerful but tied to Adobe’s subscription ecosystem, while Affinity Photo offered a one-time-purchase alternative that some users found less intuitive.

The question was whether Apple’s acquisition of Pixelmator could finally close that gap.

Apple acquired the team, then delivered the missing app

In November 2024, Pixelmator announced that its team planned to join Apple. The company said there would be no immediate material changes to Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator for iOS, or Photomator. The announcement did not spell out Apple’s long-term product strategy, so it would be too strong to say Apple explicitly acquired Pixelmator “to fix the iPad.”

Still, the fit was obvious. Pixelmator had experience building Apple-platform software around Metal graphics technology, machine-learning image tools, RAW workflows, and touch-friendly creative interfaces.

Roughly fourteen months after the original prediction, Apple announced Pixelmator Pro for iPad as part of Apple Creator Studio. The app arrived in late January 2026, turning what had been speculation into a real product.

What Pixelmator Pro for iPad actually offers

This is not simply the old iPad Pixelmator app with a new icon. Apple positions Pixelmator Pro for iPad as built for iPadOS and Apple silicon rather than as the Mac application running through a compatibility layer.

Professional photo editing

  • Nondestructive color adjustments
  • RAW support for more than 750 camera models
  • More than 40 color-adjustment presets
  • More than 70 effects
  • Background removal and color enhancement
  • Super-resolution and other AI-assisted tools

The nondestructive workflow is important. It lets you adjust an image without permanently changing the original pixels, which is a basic requirement for a serious editing application.

Layers, compositing, and design

Pixelmator Pro for iPad also moves beyond photography. It supports layer-based editing, masks, free transforms, layer styles, vector shapes, typography, and pen tools. Layer styles include options such as fills, strokes, drop shadows, and inner shadows.

That makes the app suitable for common design tasks as well as photo correction: social graphics, posters, collages, thumbnails, invitations, mock-ups, and image composites.

Apple Pencil and painting tools

Apple Pencil support includes pressure and tilt sensitivity. The app also includes dual-texture brushes and Metal-powered painting performance.

For iPad users, this is more than a convenience. A touch-first canvas and Pencil input can make selections, masking, retouching, and painting feel more direct than a traditional desktop workflow. Whether it is more comfortable will depend on the user and the size of the iPad, but the underlying interaction model is now appropriate for the platform.

Broad file compatibility

According to the App Store listing, the app can open or work with JPEG, TIFF, PNG, PSD, HEIF, SVG, AI, Illustrator EPS, PDF, GIF, BMP, TGA, WebP, JPEG 2000, AVIF, MP4, MOV, HDR images, and HDR video.

  • FAST WI-FI CONNECTIVITY — Wi-Fi 6 gives you fast access to your files, uploads, and downloads, and lets you seamlessly stream your favorite shows.

That is useful for moving projects between apps and devices, particularly for people who already work with PSD files. But format support does not guarantee perfect round-tripping. Complex Photoshop or Illustrator documents may contain fonts, effects, adjustment layers, plug-ins, or vector behaviors that do not translate identically.

The June 2026 update made it more than a launch-day promise

Pixelmator Pro 4.3, released June 30, 2026, added a Content Hub with curated photos, graphics, shapes, and illustrations. It also expanded template and mock-up categories and introduced generative AI image creation and additional image-creation tools.

Apple’s release notes say Pixelmator Pro for iPad requires iPadOS 26 or later and compatible Apple silicon or newer hardware. Apple also describes broader Creator Studio integrations with Final Cut Pro, Keynote, Pages, and Numbers in its June 2026 announcement.

Those integrations suggest that Pixelmator Pro is being treated as part of a wider Apple creative-software strategy rather than as a one-off iPad port. They do not, however, guarantee a particular support lifespan or complete feature parity with the Mac version.

Does it solve the original complaint?

Original need Current result
Intuitive, Apple-native interface Largely addressed
Serious layer-based editing Addressed
Selections, masks, and compositing Addressed for many common workflows
Apple Pencil workflow Addressed
RAW editing Addressed
Typography and vector tools Addressed
Mac-quality Pixelmator experience on iPad Substantially addressed
One-time purchase on iPad Not addressed
Broad compatibility with older iPads Not addressed
Simple standalone purchase Not addressed; it is included with Creator Studio

So the answer is yes, with an important qualification: Apple fixed the software problem far more successfully than it fixed the ownership and pricing problem.

The subscription is the central catch

Pixelmator Pro for iPad is part of Apple Creator Studio. In the United States, Apple lists the service at $12.99 per month or $129 per year, following a 30-day free trial. Education pricing is listed at $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year.

The frequently mentioned $49.99 one-time purchase applies to Pixelmator Pro for Mac. It is not the purchase price for the iPad app.

That distinction changes the verdict depending on how you work:

  • If you only want an occasional photo editor: Creator Studio may be difficult to justify, especially if you already own a Mac app or prefer buying software once.
  • If you also use Apple’s creative apps: The bundle becomes more compelling if you need Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Motion, Compressor, MainStage, or Creator Studio features in Apple’s productivity apps.
  • If you already pay for Adobe: Pixelmator Pro could offer a more Apple-native alternative, but changing ecosystems brings compatibility and workflow costs.
  • If subscriptions are a deal-breaker: Apple did not solve your original objection. The app exists, but the business model is still recurring access.

Check your iPad before you get excited

Pixelmator Pro for iPad requires iPadOS 26 and one of the following hardware categories:

  • iPad with an M1 chip or later
  • iPad with an A16 chip
  • iPad mini with an A17 Pro chip

That excludes older A-series iPads, even when they can run other image-editing apps. An iPad owner may therefore face two costs: the Creator Studio subscription and a hardware upgrade.

This is a practical limitation, not merely a technical footnote. The original hope was for a better iPad app; the delivered solution is available only to owners of relatively recent models.

Be careful which Pixelmator app you download

Apple’s current product page distinguishes among several products:

  • Pixelmator Pro for iPad: the new professional editor included with Apple Creator Studio.
  • Pixelmator Classic for iOS: the older app, which remains functional but is no longer being updated.
  • Photomator: a separate application focused more heavily on photography and RAW-library editing.
  • Pixelmator Pro for Mac: the Mac application, listed by Apple as a $49.99 one-time purchase.

They are not interchangeable. Someone who downloads Pixelmator Classic and finds a narrower feature set has not tested the new iPad product.

Pixelmator Pro is likely the more natural fit for someone who wants an Apple-focused interface and a combination of photo editing and graphic design. Neither option satisfies someone seeking a professional iPad app with no recurring payment.

Affinity Photo for iPad

Affinity Photo remains an important alternative for users who want advanced layer-based editing outside Adobe’s subscription ecosystem. Its trade-off is complexity: the original comparison found it less immediately intuitive than Pixelmator Pro.

Because pricing and ownership policies can change, check Affinity’s current terms before choosing it specifically for its payment model.

Photomator

Photomator is better suited to photographers who primarily need RAW development, library editing, color adjustments, and enhancement. It is not intended to replace every layer-based compositing or graphic-design workflow.

Apple Photos

Apple Photos remains the simplest option for organizing a library and making basic adjustments. It does not replace layers, masks, advanced compositing, vector work, or professional design tools.

Who should use Pixelmator Pro for iPad?

It is a strong candidate for:

  • Owners of compatible M-series or newer iPads who want Mac-like image editing.
  • Apple Pencil users who retouch, mask, draw, or paint directly on the canvas.
  • Creators who need both photo manipulation and graphic-design tools.
  • People who also want Apple’s video, audio, and productivity apps through Creator Studio.
  • Users who prefer Apple’s interface and ecosystem to Adobe’s.

It is a weaker fit for:

  • Owners of incompatible iPads.
  • People who only need cropping, exposure correction, and occasional filters.
  • Users who categorically reject subscriptions.
  • Photographers whose needs are primarily cataloging and RAW-library management.
  • Professionals dependent on specialized Adobe, Lightroom, Illustrator, plug-in, or desktop-publishing workflows.

The verdict

Apple did what the original 2024 complaint hoped it might do. Pixelmator Pro for iPad is a substantial, polished image editor that brings layers, nondestructive editing, RAW support, vector tools, typography, Apple Pencil input, and broad file compatibility to Apple’s tablet.

But it is not an uncomplicated victory. The iPad version requires modern hardware and a Creator Studio subscription, while the Mac version retains the $49.99 one-time purchase. Apple solved the platform gap without solving the subscription objection.

In short: Apple fixed the iPad’s lack of a polished Pixelmator Pro-class editor. It did not fix the business model that many users were worried Apple would impose.
