For digital painting and illustration, Krita is the free Photoshop alternative most worth mastering. It is free, open-source, installed locally, and built around brushes, canvases, layers, masks, stabilizers, and animation rather than Adobe’s subscription ecosystem. That makes it an excellent replacement for many artists—but “self-hosted” is not quite the right description: Krita is desktop software you control on your computer, not a private web application running on your own server.
Krita can replace Photoshop for painting, concept art, illustration, texture work, and many layered compositions. It cannot reproduce every Photoshop workflow, especially Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom integration, Generative Fill, specialist plugins, complex PSD interchange, and some print-production pipelines. The practical answer is conditional: switch completely if your work is painting-led; keep Photoshop available if your work depends on Adobe-specific production features.
First, what “free, self-hosted” means here
The phrase combines several different ideas:
- Free: Krita is distributed as free, open-source software under the GNU GPL, according to the Krita project.
- Locally installed: You download and run it on your own Windows, macOS, or Linux computer. Your working files can remain on your storage.
- Open source: The program’s source code and license model differ from proprietary Photoshop.
- Self-hosted: Strictly speaking, this usually means that you operate the application yourself on a server, NAS, or private infrastructure. Krita is not normally used that way.
So the accurate description is free, open-source, local desktop painting software. That still matters for artists who want control over their files, fewer account dependencies, and no Adobe Creative Cloud subscription. It does not automatically prove that an application has no telemetry, works on every device, or receives no data from connected services.

Photopea is a different case. Its official site describes a browser-based editor that processes files locally and supports PSD and many other formats, but local browser processing is not the same as operating a self-hosted copy of the application. Photopea is attractive for fast Photoshop-style edits and occasional PSD work; Krita is the stronger choice for painting.

GIMP is another genuine local, open-source option. The GIMP project describes it as software for photo retouching, image composition, and image authoring. It is a capable general-purpose raster editor, but Krita’s central design is more naturally suited to brush-based artwork.
Why Krita feels like a Photoshop replacement for painters
Photoshop is broad: photography, design, compositing, print, web production, and increasingly generative tools. Krita is more focused. Its interface and feature priorities make sense when the main activity is putting marks on a canvas.
That focus changes the workflow. Instead of treating brushes as one tool among many, you build a working environment around brush engines, presets, pressure sensitivity, stabilizers, assistants, color selectors, reference images, and layer organization. Krita’s project is explicitly positioned as a professional free and open-source painting program, rather than as a one-for-one Photoshop clone. See Krita’s official overview.
The result is not feature parity. It is often better alignment between the software and the job.
The workflow to master before you call it a replacement
1. Start with a native project file
Create or open an image, then save an editable project in Krita’s native .kra format. Do not use PNG or JPEG as your working master. Those formats are useful exports, but they cannot preserve the complete editable structure of a Krita document.

Use the native project file for layers, masks, vector elements, assistant settings, and other document information. Keep the original image separately and maintain a backup before making major changes.
2. Separate the original from your edits
Import the reference or source image, keep it untouched, and paint or adjust on new layers. A simple structure might contain:
Recommended Free Tools
- Reference or original image
- Sketch
- Line work
- Base colors
- Shadows and highlights
- Effects and texture
- Text or finishing elements
This is the same principle as a careful Photoshop workflow: preserve the source, name layers, and avoid baking every decision into one bitmap.
3. Learn masks and clipping before chasing advanced brushes
Brush presets are fun, but layers and masks are what make a large illustration recoverable. Use a transparency mask or other non-destructive masking method when you need to hide part of a layer without deleting pixels. Use clipping or alpha-inheritance workflows when you want shading or texture constrained to existing painted shapes.
The exact control names and panel arrangement can vary by Krita version and workspace, so verify the current command in Krita’s documentation or menus rather than relying on a Photoshop tutorial’s terminology. The important habit is constant: keep the pixels and the visibility decision separate whenever possible.

4. Use separate layers for retouching and light effects
For portrait or texture work, create a new paint layer above the subject for small corrections, clone-like repairs, highlights, or dodge-and-burn marks. Lower the layer opacity if the effect is too strong. This makes recovery easier than repeatedly editing the only copy of the image.
Krita can handle ordinary retouching and compositing, but photographers should not mistake painting tools for a complete Lightroom or Camera Raw replacement. RAW development, catalog management, and high-volume photo workflows may require another application.
5. Build the canvas around the final output
Before painting, decide whether the work is for a screen, a social post, a book, or a print. Set the document dimensions and resolution accordingly, and keep the color workflow consistent. RGB artwork for a website is a different production problem from CMYK proofing, spot colors, ICC-managed print output, or printer-specific profiles.
Krita can be entirely sufficient for web graphics and personal artwork. Do not assume that a free editor is automatically suitable for every prepress handoff; confirm the requirements with the printer or production team.
6. Export a copy, not your master
Save the editable .kra file first. Then export the delivery copy in the format the recipient needs—often PNG or JPEG for web use, with other formats available depending on the workflow. Reopen the exported file or inspect it in the target application to check transparency, dimensions, color, and text rendering.

What you must relearn after Photoshop
The hardest part of migration is rarely whether Krita has a brush, transform tool, or blend mode. It is replacing muscle memory.
- Interface location: Panels, dockers, tool options, and shortcuts are organized differently.
- Keyboard habits: Familiar Photoshop shortcuts may not map exactly. Rebuild the commands you use most rather than trying to remember every shortcut at once.
- Non-destructive editing: Krita’s layer and mask approach is powerful, but you must deliberately preserve editable decisions.
- Brush behavior: Pressure, spacing, opacity, flow, stabilization, and brush engines need tuning for your tablet and hand.
- File discipline: Use .kra as the master, export delivery files, and test PSD exchange instead of assuming perfect round trips.
- Extensions: Photoshop plugins, actions, and scripts are not automatically portable. Look for Krita-compatible plugins or redesign the process.
Give yourself a small practice project: import a sketch, establish a layer group, add a mask, paint a correction on a separate layer, add text, export a web image, close the document, and reopen the .kra file. If you can do that without flattening the work, you have learned the part of the workflow that matters most.
Where Krita can beat Photoshop
- Cost: There is no Adobe subscription required to use the core application.
- Control: The desktop program and project files can stay on your own computer and backups.
- Painting focus: The application is designed around digital artists rather than treating painting as one department inside a larger commercial suite.
- Linux availability: Krita is a natural option for artists who prefer an open-source desktop environment.
- Long-term ownership: You can keep working files in an open-source ecosystem instead of tying the editable master to a Creative Cloud account.
- Routine work: Sketching, line art, coloring, texture painting, concept work, and layered illustration do not require every Photoshop feature.
“Free” does not mean costless in the broadest sense. You still need storage, backups, fonts, training time, a suitable display or tablet, and perhaps another application for RAW or print work.

- Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom: Photographers with established ingest, catalog, and RAW-development workflows may lose more time migrating than they save.
- Generative features: Photoshop includes Adobe Firefly-based tools such as Generative Fill that Krita should not be presented as reproducing feature-for-feature.
- PSD fidelity: Photoshop is the reference application for its own format, including Smart Objects, adjustment layers, linked assets, editable text, layer effects, vector shapes, and complex masks.
- Plugins and automation: Commercial Photoshop plugins, actions, scripts, and production pipelines are not automatically available in Krita.
- Collaboration: Teams already using Adobe Libraries, Creative Cloud sharing, and established review processes may value compatibility and support more than license savings.
- Print production: CMYK proofing, spot colors, ICC-managed output, and prepress handoff require specific testing, not a generic claim of equivalence.
- Industry familiarity: Clients, agencies, and employers may expect Photoshop files and Photoshop-specific procedures.
PSD compatibility: opening is not preserving
A file that opens is not necessarily a file that survives migration. A complex PSD may appear usable while flattening or substituting unsupported elements.
Before committing to a mixed workflow, create a test document containing:
- Editable text
- Layer masks
- Adjustment layers
- Smart Objects
- Layer effects
- Blend modes
- Vector shapes
- Embedded and linked assets
- A defined color profile
Save it from Photoshop, open it in Krita, inspect every layer, make a controlled edit, save or export it, and reopen the result in Photoshop. Record what remains editable and what changes. If collaborators exchange files daily, repeat the test with their real templates rather than a simplified sample.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor simple layered artwork, the result may be perfectly practical. For complex commercial PSDs, keep Photoshop as the handoff application or agree on a flattened delivery format while preserving the authoritative master in the program that supports all of its features.

Who should switch—and who should not
Krita is a strong choice if you:
- Paint or illustrate more often than you retouch photographs.
- Want local, open-source desktop software.
- Use Linux or prefer not to maintain an Adobe subscription.
- Create artwork for websites, social media, portfolios, books, or personal projects.
- Can keep a .kra master and exchange flattened or tested files when necessary.
Keep Photoshop in the workflow if you:
- Exchange complex PSDs with agencies or clients every day.
- Depend on Camera Raw, Lightroom, Generative Fill, or Photoshop-only plugins.
- Need Adobe Libraries or Creative Cloud collaboration.
- Work in demanding CMYK, spot-color, ICC, or prepress environments.
- Need formal vendor support, enterprise administration, or a standardized Photoshop pipeline.
The sensible migration plan
- Back up your Photoshop files, fonts, brushes, templates, and linked assets.
- Install Krita alongside Photoshop. Do not migrate a live client project first.
- Recreate one low-risk illustration from sketch to export.
- Build a layer naming and backup routine around .kra files.
- Map your essential shortcuts and brushes.
- Run the PSD test using a real collaboration file.
- Check print or web output on the equipment and profiles you actually use.
- Keep a fallback application until your real projects—not just tutorials—survive the change.
This approach avoids the most expensive migration mistake: confusing a successful demo with a reliable production workflow.
