Unsplash and Pexels are the best starting points for most people who need free stock photography. Choose Pixabay when you also need illustrations, vectors, video, or audio; Kaboompics for cohesive lifestyle and interior imagery; and Vecteezy when you need photos alongside design assets and can meet its attribution and usage limits.
“Free” does not mean unrestricted, copyright-free, or automatically cleared for every business use. Each service has its own license, and visible people, logos, artwork, buildings, and private property may create separate legal issues. Check the current license on the image’s official download page before publishing—especially for advertising, merchandise, packaging, client work, and other high-risk uses.

This is a practical editorial guide, not a legal guarantee. Licenses and site availability can change, so recheck the linked terms immediately before use.
What “free stock photo” actually means
These phrases describe different things:
- Free download: you do not pay to obtain the file.
- Commercial use: the license permits certain business, marketing, or client projects.
- No attribution: you do not have to credit the photographer under that site’s summarized license.
- Modification allowed: you may crop, recolor, retouch, or combine the image with other material.
- Royalty-free: usually means there is no continuing royalty after the applicable license is obtained. It does not mean unrestricted or public domain.
Unsplash, Pexels, Pixabay, and Vecteezy are not interchangeable public-domain repositories. Read the individual service’s terms, and treat “commercial use allowed” as only one part of the clearance question.

1. Unsplash: best overall for polished photography
Best for: websites, blog posts, presentations, editorial layouts, travel, architecture, nature, technology, and visually led marketing.
Unsplash’s license permits free commercial and non-commercial use, modification, and downloading without mandatory attribution. Credit is appreciated but not required, as explained in its attribution FAQ.
Its strongest advantage is visual quality: the library is particularly useful when a painting site, creative portfolio, or design publication needs a clean hero image, studio atmosphere, material texture, or contemporary lifestyle scene.
Important limits: you may not sell an image without significant modification or compile images to create a competing stock-photo service. Search results can also favor familiar, highly polished aesthetics, meaning the same image may appear across many websites. Recognizable people, brands, landmarks, and artwork can create additional rights issues even when the photograph itself is licensed.
Verdict: Start here when you need a strong still image quickly and do not need video or a broader asset library.
2. Pexels: best for photos and video together
Best for: social media, advertising, e-commerce, websites, presentations, blogs, and projects that combine photography with short-form video.
Pexels allows free personal and commercial use, modification, and downloading without required attribution. The service explicitly lists websites, newsletters, e-books, presentations, advertising, print marketing, online shops, and social media among permitted uses.

Pexels is often the most convenient choice when a campaign needs both a still image and a moving background. It is also useful for painting tutorials, studio reels, behind-the-scenes content, and social posts that need a consistent visual starting point.
Important limits: do not resell an unaltered image, redistribute it to another stock or wallpaper platform, use it as a trademark, trade name, or service mark, or imply that a person or brand shown endorses your product. Pexels also restricts depicting identifiable people in a bad light or offensive way.
Verdict: Choose Pexels over Unsplash when video matters or when you need a straightforward general-purpose business image.
3. Pixabay: best for maximum variety
Best for: projects that need more than photographs, including illustrations, vectors, video, music, GIFs, and sound effects.
Under the Pixabay License, commercial and non-commercial use and modification are generally permitted without required attribution. Its FAQ covers the service’s wider media selection.
Pixabay is practical for a small business or creator building an entire visual package: a photograph for a blog header, a vector accent for a flyer, and a sound effect for a video can come from the same service. The trade-off is consistency. Quality, style, and licensing details can vary more across asset types and individual uploads.
Important limits: no standalone resale or distribution is allowed. Visible trademarks, logos, brands, recognizable people, private property, artwork, and other protected elements may require additional permission. Pixabay specifically warns that its download license does not automatically resolve trademark, publicity, privacy, or property rights.

Best for: interiors, food, fashion, design, creative workspaces, and campaigns that need several images with a related visual mood.
Kaboompics’ stated license allows personal and commercial projects, and credit is generally optional but encouraged. Its curated lifestyle photography can be especially useful when a painting blog or studio brand needs a coordinated series rather than one isolated stock image.
Important limits: Kaboompics warns that people, brands, artwork, and property visible in an image may carry separate rights that the service cannot guarantee are cleared for every commercial use. Its license may also be updated. Check the current terms before publication, and be cautious with advertising, packaging, and images where a recognizable object or person is central to the message.
Verdict: Try Kaboompics when visual cohesion matters more than having the largest possible search universe.

5. Vecteezy: best for photos plus vectors and illustrations
Best for: designers who need photographs, vectors, illustrations, and other graphic assets in one workflow.
Vecteezy’s free license is materially more restrictive than the “download and use anywhere” summaries often associated with free stock. Free content requires attribution and is subject to limits involving digital use, print quantities, merchandise, resale, and production budgets. The service’s photo FAQ provides additional conditions.

This can still be a good resource for a personal website, presentation, or small project where an attribution line is practical. It is a poor fit when credit cannot be displayed, when an asset will be printed on products, or when the project exceeds the free license’s audience, print, or budget limits.
Verdict: Use Vecteezy free downloads only after checking the exact limits. Consider Vecteezy Pro when attribution or free-use restrictions do not fit the project.

Which site should you choose?
- Blog or website: Unsplash or Pexels. Pixabay is useful when you need illustrations or vectors too.
- Social media: Pexels for photo-and-video workflows; Unsplash for polished stills.
- E-commerce: Pexels or Unsplash for supporting imagery, but inspect logos, people, and implied endorsements carefully.
- Painting tutorials and studio content: Pexels for video, Unsplash for atmospheric still photography, and Kaboompics for cohesive interiors or workspaces.
- Presentations and newsletters: Any of the no-attribution options may work, subject to image-level restrictions.
- Vectors and illustrations: Pixabay or Vecteezy, with Vecteezy’s free attribution and usage limits checked first.
- Merchandise or print-on-demand: Do not assume any of these free licenses cover it. Verify the exact product-use terms or obtain a suitable paid license.
- Brand-sensitive, regulated, or high-budget advertising: Prefer a paid library with clearer release information, licensing support, and—where offered—indemnification.
Commercial use: the restrictions that matter
Ordinary commercial uses such as a website hero image, blog post, social graphic, newsletter, presentation, e-book, flyer, or landing page are generally lower-friction under the summarized licenses above. They are not automatically risk-free.
Take extra care with:
- Recognizable people: Do not place someone in a political, medical, sexual, offensive, defamatory, or otherwise sensitive context without investigating releases and applicable rights.
- Logos and brands: A photograph can be licensed while a visible trademark remains protected. A logo may make an image unsuitable for advertising or product packaging.
- Artwork and property: Paintings, sculptures, distinctive interiors, private buildings, and designs can involve rights beyond the photographer’s copyright.
- Merchandise: “Commercial use” does not automatically include shirts, mugs, posters, packaging, or print-on-demand products.
- Standalone resale: These services generally prohibit selling or redistributing the image itself, or using it as the primary value of a product.
- Endorsement: Do not suggest that a person, company, or brand shown in the image supports your product.
- Editorial status: If an image is marked editorial-only, do not use it in ordinary commercial advertising.
Attribution requirements
| Service | Attribution under the summarized terms |
|---|---|
| Unsplash | Not required; appreciated |
| Pexels | Not required; appreciated |
| Pixabay | Not required; appreciated |
| Kaboompics | Generally not required; encouraged |
| Vecteezy free content | Required |
These are summaries, not substitutes for the current license. If attribution is required, include the creator and source in the format the service requests. Even when credit is optional, giving it can be a useful professional courtesy.
A safer download workflow
- Define the use first. Decide whether the image is for editorial content, a website, an advertisement, packaging, merchandise, a logo, a paid template, or client work.
- Open the official asset page. Do not rely on a search-engine snippet or an image copied from an unrelated site.
- Read the current license. Confirm commercial use, attribution, modification, resale, print, merchandise, and redistribution rules.
- Inspect the image. Look for recognizable people, logos, artwork, private property, and sensitive context. Check for editorial-only labels.
- Save evidence. Keep the image URL, creator name, download date, license URL, and—when the project matters—an archived screenshot or PDF of the applicable terms.
- Keep an asset log. This is especially useful for agencies, publishers, and businesses whose contractors may later need to prove the source and permitted use.
- Escalate when necessary. For large campaigns, packaging, merchandise, political messaging, or recognizable people, use a library and license designed for that risk profile or obtain additional permissions.
When paid stock is worth it
Free stock is often adequate for a blog post or ordinary social graphic. Paying becomes sensible when you need a very specific subject, a cohesive series, high-volume downloads, team administration, API or digital-asset-management integration, large print or resale rights, clearer model/property-release information, or stronger legal support.
Adobe Stock’s free assets can cover occasional needs, while its paid plans provide a larger library and broader workflow integration. Adobe’s plans and terms are at stock.adobe.com/plans and Adobe’s product terms. The dossier recorded US-dollar signals of $29.99 per month for 10 standard assets and credit packs beginning at $49.95 for five credits, but prices vary by market, account, plan, and promotion. Trials may convert into paid subscriptions unless canceled under the applicable conditions.

Shutterstock offers paid subscriptions, image packs, and team or enterprise options; its pricing and billing conditions change, so consult the official billing FAQ. Vecteezy Pro is another upgrade when a project needs photos, vectors, graphics, or video without the free license’s attribution and usage limits.
Do not buy a paid plan merely because a project is commercial. Buy it when the required rights, support, scale, or risk controls justify the cost.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling every free image “copyright-free” or “public domain.”
- Assuming no attribution means no other obligations.
- Using a visible logo in an advertisement or product design without checking trademark implications.
- Putting a recognizable person on merchandise or in a sensitive endorsement context.
- Uploading downloaded images to another stock, wallpaper, or asset-aggregation service.
- Using a free image as a logo, trademark, or the main value of a product for sale.
- Assuming an AI-generated, edited, composite, or illustrated asset has no restrictions.
- Failing to retain the license record after an image is removed or the site changes its terms.
Bottom line
For most still-image needs, begin with Unsplash. Choose Pexels when video is also part of the project, Pixabay for mixed media, Kaboompics for cohesive lifestyle imagery, and Vecteezy only when its attribution and free-use limits fit. For merchandise, packaging, major advertising, or brand-critical work, verify releases and consider paid stock rather than treating “free” as a complete legal clearance.
