To flip text to the opposite side of a path in Adobe Illustrator, select the type-on-path object and drag its center bracket across the path. You can also use Type > Type on a Path > Type on a Path Options and choose Flip.
This works for curved headings, circular logos, badges, seals, and text following open paths.
The quickest way to flip text on a path
- Select the type-on-path object with the Selection Tool (V).
- Locate the small center bracket on the text path. It is different from the start and end brackets.
- Drag the center bracket through the path to the opposite side.
Dragging the center bracket across the path flips the text. Dragging it along the path only changes the text’s position. Adobe documents this workflow in its current text-on-path instructions.
Use the Flip command instead
- Select the type-on-path object.
- Choose Type > Type on a Path > Type on a Path Options.
- Turn on Preview, if available.
- Select Flip, then click OK.
The dialog also includes controls for path effects, alignment, and spacing. Depending on your Illustrator release, workspace, or localization, the interface may look slightly different. Adobe’s documented alignment options include Ascender, Descender, Center, and Baseline; Baseline is the default. See Adobe’s guide to text alignment and spacing on paths.

First, create text on a path
- Draw a path with the Pen, Ellipse, Arc, or another drawing tool.
- Choose the Type on a Path Tool.
- Move the pointer over the path until the type-on-path cursor appears.
- Click the path and type or paste your text.
If the handles are not visible, select the resulting object with the Selection Tool or Direct Selection Tool. Illustrator supports both horizontal and vertical type-on-path tools; its creation workflow is described in Adobe’s Type on a Path Tool documentation.
Flip text inside a circle without reversing its direction
“Flip” can mean two different things. The Flip command changes the text’s side of the path and may change its direction or orientation. If the text already reads in the desired direction and you only want to move it closer to the center of a circle, use Baseline Shift instead:

- Select the type-on-path object.
- Open the Character panel.
- Adjust Baseline Shift until the text sits inside or outside the circle as required.
Baseline Shift changes the text’s perpendicular distance from the path without changing its direction. It is usually the better choice for precise logo and seal layouts.
Keep bottom-circle text upright
For a badge or seal, use two independent type-on-path objects rather than forcing all wording onto one continuous circle:

- Create or duplicate a circular path for the top text.
- Create a second circular path for the bottom text.
- Add each phrase with the Type on a Path Tool.
- Use Flip or drag the center bracket across the path for the bottom phrase.
- Adjust alignment, Baseline Shift, tracking, and position independently.
Separate paths make it easier to center the top and bottom phrases, use different font sizes, and keep lower text upright. If the result remains upside down, try another Align to Path setting—often Ascender, Center, or Baseline—then check the direction in which the path was drawn or duplicated.
Move text around the path
The handles have different jobs:
- Center bracket: moves the text and, when dragged across the path, flips it.
- Start and end brackets: define where the text begins and ends along the path.
- Path: can be reshaped with the Direct Selection Tool.
To move the text along the path without changing its direction, hold Ctrl on Windows or Command on macOS while dragging the center bracket, as described in Adobe’s type-on-a-path reference.

Adjust spacing and alignment after flipping

The Spacing control is intended for curved paths; Adobe notes that it does not affect characters on straight paths. Use tracking or kerning for straight-line type. Alignment choices such as Ascender, Descender, Center, and Baseline control how characters sit relative to the path.

- Make the path or circle larger.
- Reduce the font size.
- Reduce tracking or path spacing.
- Shorten the wording.
- Use a narrower typeface.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |

| Text moves instead of flipping | The wrong handle was dragged | Select the object and drag the center bracket across the path. |
| Text is upside down | Wrong side, alignment, or path direction | Use Flip, test Align to Path options, or use a separate bottom path. |

| Letters overlap | Insufficient curved-path spacing | Increase Spacing or Tracking, or enlarge the circle. |
| The path disappeared | Applying the Type tool may remove the path’s visible stroke and fill | Restore the stroke in the Appearance panel or keep a duplicate guide path behind the text. |
| The center bracket is missing | The object or view is not selected clearly | Use the Selection or Direct Selection Tool, zoom in, select through the Layers panel, or use View > Outline. |
| Text is clipped | The copy does not fit | Shorten the text, reduce its size or spacing, or enlarge the path. |
Reversing the path direction can help with unusual open-path orientation problems, but it is an advanced troubleshooting step. It can also affect other path-based behavior, so try the center bracket, Flip, alignment, and separate-path methods first.
These commands apply to Adobe Illustrator. Photoshop uses a different text-on-path workflow.
