Pixel size can mean three different things: the number of pixels in a digital image, the physical spacing of pixels on a screen, or the physical spacing of photosites on a camera sensor. A digital image pixel has no inherent physical size until it is displayed, printed, or mapped to a sensor or output device.
For example, a photograph measuring 4000 × 3000 px contains 12 million pixels—approximately 12 megapixels. The same file can appear small on a high-density phone, large on a monitor, or print at several different sizes. Its pixel count changes only when the image is cropped, resized, or resampled.
Pixel size at a glance
| Term | What it describes | Typical unit |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel dimensions | How many pixels span an image’s width and height | px |
| Pixel density | How many pixels fit into one inch | PPI |
| Display pixel pitch | The physical spacing between screen pixels | mm |
| Camera pixel pitch | The physical spacing between sensor photosites | μm |
| Printer resolution | How densely a printer places ink dots | DPI |
| Megapixels | The approximate total number of image pixels | MP |
When someone asks for an image’s “pixel size,” they usually mean its pixel dimensions, such as 1920 × 1080 px. In conversations about monitors or cameras, however, they may mean physical pixel pitch.

What is a pixel?
A pixel—short for picture element—is a numerical sample containing color and brightness information. In a raster image, pixels form a grid of columns and rows. Photographs, screenshots, digital paintings, scanned documents, video frames, and web graphics all use this grid-based representation.

A pixel is not necessarily a tiny physical square. It is data until an output device turns that data into visible or printed information. A screen uses physical display elements; a printer may use many ink droplets to reproduce the appearance of one image pixel. Most modern displays use square pixels, but some video and legacy systems use non-square pixels. Microsoft explains the distinction between image aspect ratio and pixel aspect ratio in its picture-aspect-ratio documentation.
Image pixel dimensions: width and height
For an ordinary image file, pixel size is generally written as:
width × height = pixel dimensions
Common examples include:
800 × 600 px1920 × 1080 px4000 × 3000 px1080 × 1080 px
Multiply the width by the height to find the total pixel count:
Recommended Free Tools
4000 × 3000 = 12,000,000 pixels
That is approximately a 12 MP image. Pixel dimensions determine how much image detail is available for display, cropping, and printing, but they do not specify a physical size in inches or centimeters.
Pixel dimensions and aspect ratio
Aspect ratio describes the relationship between width and height:
aspect ratio = width ÷ height
1920 × 1080is 16:9.1080 × 1080is 1:1.4000 × 3000is 4:3.
Changing width and height independently can stretch an image. Keep the aspect-ratio constraint enabled when resizing unless distortion is intentional.
Pixel dimensions, PPI, DPI, and resolution
What is PPI?
PPI means pixels per inch. It describes pixel density. In a print file, it indicates how many image pixels are assigned to each inch of paper. For a display, it describes how many physical screen pixels fit into an inch.
Higher PPI can provide more detail in the same physical area, but it does not guarantee a better image. Focus, lens quality, noise, sharpening, compression, color, viewing distance, and the output device also matter. Adobe provides an overview of image resolution and its relationship to image quality.

The often-repeated “72 PPI is for screens” rule is not universal. For web and social media, the important setting is usually the required pixel dimensions; PPI metadata often has little or no effect on how an application displays the file.
What is DPI?
DPI means dots per inch and traditionally describes the physical ink dots produced by a printer. A printer may use multiple droplets to reproduce one image pixel, so:
300 PPI image resolution ≠ 300 DPI printer resolution
Image-editing software and marketing materials sometimes use “DPI” loosely for image resolution, but PPI is the more precise term for digital image pixels. Adobe distinguishes PPI from DPI.
Resolution has several meanings
“Resolution” may refer to pixel dimensions, pixel density, print density, or the ability of an optical system or output device to resolve fine detail. A larger pixel count is only a larger sampling grid; it does not automatically mean that the lens captured more visible detail.
How to calculate print size from pixel size
Use these formulas:
print width in inches = image width in pixels ÷ PPI
print height in inches = image height in pixels ÷ PPI
A 3000 × 2400 px image prints at:
- 300 PPI:
3000 ÷ 300 = 10inches wide and2400 ÷ 300 = 8inches high. - 150 PPI: 20 × 16 inches.
The image still contains exactly 7.2 million pixels. Only the size of the printed pixels has changed.
To calculate the image needed for a particular print:
required pixel width = print width × target PPI
required pixel height = print height × target PPI
For an 18 × 12-inch print at 300 PPI:
18 × 300 = 5400 px
12 × 300 = 3600 px
The target image size is therefore 5400 × 3600 px. A 300 PPI target is common for close-viewed, high-quality prints, but it is not a universal minimum. Large paintings and posters are often viewed from farther away, so the appropriate effective PPI depends on the print provider, paper, image content, and viewing distance.

What is the physical size of a screen pixel?
A screen pixel’s physical size depends on the display’s physical dimensions and native resolution. If the active screen width is known:
horizontal pixel pitch = screen width in inches ÷ horizontal pixels
pixel pitch in millimeters = pixel pitch in inches × 25.4
If only the diagonal size and resolution are known, calculate display PPI first:
PPI = √(horizontal pixels2 + vertical pixels2) ÷ diagonal screen size in inches
pixel pitch in millimeters = 25.4 ÷ PPI
Example: a 27-inch 4K monitor
For a 27-inch diagonal display with a native resolution of 3840 × 2160:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →diagonal pixels = √(38402 + 21602) ≈ 4402
PPI = 4402 ÷ 27 ≈ 163
pixel pitch = 25.4 ÷ 163 ≈ 0.156 mm
This is an approximation because advertised diagonal size and the panel’s active area may differ slightly. Two displays with the same “4K” resolution can have different pixel sizes: a 27-inch 4K monitor has smaller, denser pixels than a 55-inch 4K television.
Operating-system scaling changes the size of interface elements, not the physical pixel pitch. Microsoft discusses the difference between physical pixels, DPI scaling, and device-independent pixels in its DPI documentation. Apple likewise treats display density as pixels per inch in its developer documentation.
Pixels and subpixels
A display pixel commonly uses red, green, and blue subpixels, but the arrangement varies. It may use an RGB stripe, a PenTile-style layout, or another design. The quoted pixel pitch normally describes the spacing of complete pixels—not the width of one red, green, or blue subpixel. Text clarity can therefore depend on subpixel layout as well as PPI.
What is camera-sensor pixel size?
In camera specifications, pixel size usually means pixel pitch: the physical spacing between neighboring photosites on an image sensor. It is normally measured in micrometers (μm).
pixel pitch ≈ sensor width ÷ number of horizontal photosites
The result is approximate. Effective image dimensions may differ from total sensor dimensions, and sensors can include masked pixels, unused areas, and microlenses. Apple’s camera-calibration documentation represents camera pixel size in millimeters in its pixelSize documentation.

Larger photosites can have more light-gathering area and may offer advantages in noise or high-ISO performance when other factors are comparable. Smaller photosites can provide more sampling density and resolution from the same sensor area, which can help with cropping. Neither is automatically superior. Sensor area, sensor generation, microlenses, readout design, lens quality, processing, diffraction, and the final viewing or print size all matter.
Pixel size versus megapixels
Megapixels measure the approximate total number of image pixels:
megapixels = width × height ÷ 1,000,000
For example:
6000 × 4000 = 24,000,000, or approximately 24 MP.3840 × 2160 = 8,294,400, or approximately 8.3 MP.
Megapixels do not tell you the camera’s physical sensor size, photosite size, lens quality, dynamic range, low-light performance, or the dimensions remaining after cropping. Two cameras can produce 24 MP files while using very different sensor areas and pixel pitches.

Resizing an image correctly
Changing PPI without resampling
Changing print dimensions or PPI metadata while preserving pixel dimensions does not add or remove image data. It changes the intended relationship between the existing pixels and the physical print.
For example, a 3000 × 2000 px image is:
- 10 × 6.67 inches at 300 PPI.
- 20 × 13.33 inches at 150 PPI.
The file still contains 6 million pixels.
Resampling
Resampling changes the actual pixel grid:
- Downsampling removes pixels and usually reduces storage and processing requirements.
- Upsampling creates estimated pixels. It can make a file meet a larger dimension requirement, but it cannot recover detail that was never captured.
- Cropping removes part of the image and reduces the available pixel dimensions, even without interpolation.
- Canvas resizing changes the document boundary and can add or remove empty border space without scaling the existing artwork.
In current Photoshop, open the image and select Image > Image Size. Enter the desired width, height, or resolution; keep the aspect-ratio constraint enabled to avoid distortion; enable Resample when the actual pixel dimensions must change; choose an interpolation method; then select OK. Adobe’s current Image Size guidance describes this workflow.
Affinity Photo makes the same distinction between scaling and resampling in its image-size documentation, and separates image resizing from canvas resizing.
If an enlarged image looks soft, return to the original and resize it once rather than repeatedly enlarging an already-resampled copy. If a print comes out at the wrong physical size, check the printer dialog for scaling or “fit to page” settings; PPI metadata does not control every print workflow.
Pixel dimensions and file size
More pixels usually mean more image data, but pixel dimensions do not determine an exact file size. File size also depends on:

- Format, such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WebP, HEIC, or RAW.
- Compression level and image complexity.
- Color depth and number of channels.
- Transparency, metadata, and embedded profiles.
- Layers and editing history.
Two images with identical dimensions can therefore have very different file sizes. Adobe’s documentation notes that pixel dimensions, compression, format, and image structure all contribute to storage requirements.
Which pixel size should you use?
Websites and social media
- Use the destination’s required width, height, and aspect ratio.
- Export in an appropriate format and keep file size reasonable for loading.
- Expect some platforms to recompress uploads.
- Do not change an image to 72 PPI solely because of an old screen-resolution rule.
Screenshots and digital paintings
Choose pixel dimensions that match the intended display, export, or canvas requirement. A larger canvas gives more room for detail and cropping, but it also increases memory use and processing time. Display scaling and zoom affect how large artwork appears onscreen; they do not change the artwork’s pixel dimensions.
Standard photo prints
Start with the final physical dimensions and the print provider’s recommended PPI. Check crop ratio, paper finish, sharpening, color profile, and whether the provider will resample the file.
Posters and large-format prints
Do not assume 300 PPI is mandatory. Determine the likely viewing distance and ask the printer for its preferred effective resolution. A poster viewed from several feet away can tolerate a lower PPI than a small print inspected at close range.
Choosing a monitor
Compare native resolution with physical size to determine PPI or pixel pitch. Then consider viewing distance, operating-system scaling, brightness, contrast, color gamut, panel uniformity, and refresh rate. Resolution alone does not identify the better monitor.
Choosing a camera
Use sensor pixel pitch as one specification, not a verdict. Compare sensor area, effective resolution, lens performance, low-light needs, dynamic range, cropping requirements, readout speed, rolling-shutter behavior, and image processing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- “A pixel is always a physical square.” A pixel is fundamentally a digital sample; its physical representation depends on the output system.
- “Higher PPI always means better quality.” It can increase detail density, but blur, optics, noise, compression, viewing distance, and print quality may matter more.
- “Setting 300 DPI creates a high-resolution image.” A metadata change does not create missing pixels.
- “More megapixels always means better photographs.” More pixels can improve cropping and detail, but may increase file sizes and demand more from lenses, storage, and processing.
- “A screen pixel and a camera pixel are the same.” A screen pixel displays light; a camera photosite records light. Raw photosites are later processed into image pixels.
- “Upscaling restores detail.” Upscaling increases dimensions by estimating new pixels. It may improve usability, but it does not guarantee genuine recovered detail.
- “Changing canvas size is the same as resizing an image.” Image resizing changes the artwork’s pixel grid; canvas resizing changes the surrounding document area.
The practical answer
Before changing “pixel size,” identify which quantity you need: pixel dimensions for a digital destination, PPI for the relationship between an image and a print, pixel pitch for a display or camera sensor, or DPI for printer output. Once that distinction is clear, the correct calculation or editing workflow is usually straightforward.
