Stable Fast 3D (SF3D) is Stability AI’s image-to-3D reconstruction model, launched on August 1, 2024. It takes one image of an object and produces an inferred, textured, UV-unwrapped 3D mesh—typically exported as a GLB file. It does not create an ordinary 2D image from a text prompt.
Stability AI says the model can generate an asset in approximately 0.5 seconds on a GPU with 7 GB of VRAM. That is a vendor-reported figure, not an independent benchmark, and real end-to-end time varies with hardware, preprocessing, remeshing and service latency.
What Stable Fast 3D actually does
Stable Fast 3D converts a single 2D photograph or rendered image of an object into a 3D asset. Its output can include:
#1 Best Overall
- 【Industrial-Grade Accuracy】Achieve single-frame accuracy up to 0.03 mm and volumetric accuracy of 0.03 mm + 0.05 mm x L(m), faithfully reproducing the finest surface details and complex geometries with exceptional consistency. Full-Field Structured Light accuracy reaches 0.08 mm; VCSEL mode delivers 0.10 mm @ 300-500 mm and 0.20 mm @ 500-800 mm. Engineered to meet the demanding requirements of 3D printing, reverse engineering, and precision modeling applications.
- 【Ultra-Fast Scanning & Robust Frame Rate】Multi-line Laser mode delivers up to 105 fps with NVIDIA GPU acceleration. Full-Field Structured Light mode achieves up to 5,000,000 points/s. The high frame rate ensures a smooth, uninterrupted scanning experience, especially suited for rapidly capturing large objects and complex scenes, significantly boosting overall workflow efficiency.
- 【AI-Powered & Photo-Grade Retopology】 AI object segmentation (Windows only) identifies your target in one click, tracks it throughout the scan, and auto-filters background noise — delivering clean data and streamlining post-processing. The patented 3D Gaussian Splatting converts point cloud and RGB data into true-to-life 1:1 photorealistic models; import photos from your phone or camera to apply real textures, then export in splat format for gaming, animation, and VR.
- 【All-Weather Outdoor Scanning】Multi-line Laser mode operates reliably up to 50,000 lux; with an outdoor filter attached, scanning remains stable in lighting conditions of up to 100,000 lux; VCSEL mode operates reliably in up to 100,000 lux ambient light. Designed to overcome lighting challenges, it provides consistent all-weather performance for construction sites, archaeological digs, and industrial fieldwork.
- 【5 Scanning Modes】NIR band supports Full-Field HD Scanning (markerless, fine structured light), Hybrid HD Scanning (dual projectors, fast high-quality modeling), and VCSEL Rapid Scanning (high-density pattern, fast markerless capture). Blue light band supports 30-Cross Laser Lines Scanning (handles high-reflectivity metals & dark objects) and Single-Line Deep Hole Scanning (captures from deep holes & narrow grooves). Five modes for comprehensive indoor and outdoor coverage.
- 3D mesh geometry
- UV-unwrapped coordinates
- Texture and albedo color data
- Estimated roughness and metallic material parameters
- Optional normal maps
- Optional triangle or quad remeshing
The official local example saves the result as a .glb file, which can be opened in applications such as Blender and imported into many game and 3D workflows. The model card lists 512×512 pixels as the expected input size.
In technical terms, SF3D is a transformer-based image-to-3D reconstruction model. It builds on TripoSR, but Stability AI says it was substantially retrained and modified to improve mesh generation, UV unwrapping, texture creation, lighting disentanglement and material estimation. The accompanying technical report provides more detail.
Why the speed claim matters
Stability AI’s launch announcement says SF3D can create an asset in about half a second on a GPU with 7 GB of VRAM, compared with up to 10 minutes for the company’s earlier SV3D model. Its model documentation describes inference as taking “under one second.” The announcement also cites API generation close to one second.
These numbers should be read as approximate model-inference claims under stated conditions—not as a guaranteed user-visible response time. Image upload, background removal, queueing, disk writes, remeshing and network latency can all add time, particularly when using a hosted service.
The practical benefit is that SF3D makes rapid iteration possible. A developer can test several reference images, a designer can block out a scene quickly, and an artist can use the generated mesh as a starting point instead of building every rough prop from scratch.
Stable Fast 3D versus image generation
| System | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Text-to-image | Text prompt | 2D image |
| Image-to-image | Image plus instructions | 2D image |
| Stable Fast 3D | One image of an object | 3D mesh with texture and material data |
| Text-to-3D | Text prompt | A 3D representation or mesh, depending on the system |
The original launch wording used “rapid image generation,” but SF3D is more accurately described as rapid 3D asset generation from an image. It does not produce a complete 3D scene from a text prompt, and it cannot recover hidden surfaces with certainty from one photograph.
What the model can and cannot infer
A single image provides incomplete information. SF3D must estimate the object’s unseen sides, underside, depth, internal structure and proportions. Those estimates may be convincing from the input viewpoint while being wrong from another angle.

- SMOOTH WIRELESS SCANNING – WiFi6-powered Ferret Pro ensures fast, stable scanning. Works with Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS for flexible cross-platform use.
- HIGH-PRECISION 3D MODELS – Capture detailed 3D models with full-color 24-bit scanning and anti-shake technology. Offers up to 0.1mm accuracy with full-color scanning. Ideal for objects from 50mm to 2000mm. Not suitable for very small or highly detailed items like jewelry or precision parts.cccc
- VERSATILE OUTPUT & ENVIRONMENT – Export in OBJ, STL, or PLY. Works reliably in most settings, including outdoor light (<30,000 lux). Avoid reflective, transparent, or very dark surfaces for best results.
- LIGHTWEIGHT & PORTABLE – Weighing just 105g, carry and scan anywhere—home, studio, or on the go. Compact, convenient, and ready for travel.
The generated mesh is also relatively low polygon according to the model card. That can be useful for previews, background objects and prototypes, but it does not mean the asset is automatically ready for animation, deformation, close-up rendering or a commercial product catalog.
Common cleanup tasks include correcting silhouette errors, filling missing surfaces, fixing UV seams, repainting stretched textures, removing unwanted background geometry, adjusting materials and creating more suitable topology.
Input images that produce better results
For the best starting point, use:
- One clearly visible object rather than a busy scene
- A plain or uncluttered background
- Strong contrast between the subject and its background
- A view that shows the object’s overall silhouette
- Minimal occlusion
- Even, neutral lighting where possible
Reflective, transparent, furry, thin or highly deformable objects are more difficult. A photograph of a glass bottle, for example, combines transparency, reflections and lighting in ways that make geometry and material estimation ambiguous.
SF3D’s demo includes background-removal and foreground-ratio controls. If the model reconstructs the background, clips the object or produces distorted proportions, crop the image more tightly, remove the background externally or adjust the foreground ratio before trying again. The demo code also warns that remeshing can introduce artifacts on thin surfaces.

Hosted options
Users can experiment through the gated Hugging Face model page, Stability AI’s API through platform.stability.ai, or Stable Assistant. Hosted tools are the easiest route for a quick test because they avoid local CUDA and PyTorch setup.
However, hosted services can have separate account, quota, pricing, data-handling and availability terms. Stability AI’s launch announcement mentioned a free trial for Stable Assistant, but current subscription and usage terms should be checked directly before relying on it for production work.
Local installation
The official repository lists Python 3.8 or newer and a compatible PyTorch installation. CUDA is optional, and Apple MPS support is experimental. The basic installation flow is:

The generated GLB should be written to the specified output directory. Run python run.py --help to see the current options, including --texture-resolution and --remesh_option. Documented remeshing values include None, Triangle and Quad.
Hardware and platform caveats
- The repository’s single-image example is described as using about 6 GB of VRAM by default, while the launch announcement cites 7 GB. Treat 6–7 GB as an approximate, configuration-dependent requirement rather than a hard minimum.
- If no GPU is detected, the CPU backend is used automatically, but inference will be substantially slower.
- To force CPU execution when a GPU is available, run
SF3D_USE_CPU=1 python run.py input.png --output-dir output/. - Apple Silicon MPS support is experimental and may use more memory than CUDA. The repository recommends CPU execution on systems with less than 32 GB of unified memory.
- Windows support is experimental and was tested with Visual Studio 2022. Linux with CUDA may provide a smoother path.
Dependency behavior can vary with the operating system, Python version, PyTorch build, CUDA runtime and later repository changes. Check the official repository’s current setup instructions when installing.

Where SF3D is most useful
Games and interactive media
SF3D can quickly create static props, furniture, clutter and background objects. Artists can block out a level or test a visual direction, then replace important assets with manually authored models later.
AR and VR
A single reference image can become a rough object for visualization or prototyping. The result still needs inspection before it is presented as an accurate representation of a real product or environment.

E-commerce and product visualization
Businesses can use the model to create preliminary 3D product representations from photographs. It is less suitable when dimensions, packaging details, unseen surfaces or catalog-level consistency must be exact.
Architecture, interiors and pre-production
Reference images can become rough scene assets for interior design, architecture, film blocking and animation planning. The speed is valuable when the purpose is visual exploration rather than final topology.
Important limitations
- Hidden geometry: unseen surfaces are predictions and may be incorrect.
- Topology: low-poly output may need retopology or subdivision, and quad remeshing is not automatically animation-ready.
- Thin details: remeshing can damage thin surfaces and small features.
- Textures: seams, stretching, incorrect colors and residual lighting artifacts can occur.
- Materials: reflective and transparent objects are particularly ambiguous. Predicted roughness and metallic values are starting points, not guaranteed physical measurements.
- Accuracy: SF3D is not a replacement for dimensionally accurate CAD, multi-view photogrammetry or structured-light scanning.
- Hero assets: close-up, high-resolution or deformation-critical models usually require skilled modeling and texture work.
Always rotate the mesh and inspect it from every angle before importing it into a game engine or publishing it in a commerce catalog.

Hugging Face access fails
- Open the model page and accept the applicable conditions.
- Create a token with read permissions.
- Run
huggingface-cli login. - Retry the inference command.
CUDA or PyTorch errors appear
Confirm that the PyTorch installation matches the available CUDA runtime. If GPU execution fails, test the pipeline with SF3D_USE_CPU=1. CPU mode is a useful diagnostic, although it will be much slower.
The background becomes part of the model
Use a tighter crop, a plain background or a transparent-background image. Remove the background externally or adjust the demo’s foreground-ratio setting, then regenerate.
Remeshing damages the object
Try None instead of remeshing, compare triangle and quad options, and clean the result in Blender or another 3D editor. Do not assume quad output has production animation topology.

License and commercial use
“Free” and “commercially usable” are not interchangeable. The Stability AI Community License permits commercial use for individuals and organizations with annual revenue of $1 million or less. Organizations above that threshold must obtain an enterprise commercial license from Stability AI.
The restriction applies to commercial use of the model and derivative works. The weights are gated, the code repository is public, and the model is distributed under Stability AI’s licensing terms. Review the current Community License and, where relevant, enterprise licensing information before deploying it commercially.
Stable Fast 3D compared with alternatives
TripoSR
TripoSR is the closest technical reference because SF3D is built on its foundation. The meaningful comparison is not simply which model is “better.” Evaluate speed, UV and texture handling, material estimation, hardware requirements, licensing and performance on the object categories you actually use. There is no basis here for claiming that SF3D universally outperforms TripoSR.

Stable Point Aware 3D
Stable Point Aware 3D (SPAR3D) is another Stability AI 3D model. The company describes it as supporting real-time editing and more complete structure generation from a single image, making it worth considering when interactive control matters more than the simplest SF3D workflow.
Photogrammetry, scanning, Blender and CAD
Multi-view photogrammetry, structured-light or LiDAR scanning can produce more complete geometry when multiple views are available. Manual Blender modeling is preferable for clean topology and artistic control, while CAD reconstruction remains the right choice for exact dimensions and manufactured products. These approaches demand more time, equipment or labor, but they solve problems that a single-image model cannot fully solve.
Who should choose SF3D?
Choose Stable Fast 3D when speed, low input effort and rapid prototyping matter most; you have one usable reference image; and you can tolerate manual cleanup. It is particularly attractive for props, concept assets, visualization and early-stage design.
Choose another approach when you need exact measurements, complete hidden geometry, a high-resolution hero asset, reliable animation topology, or a large production pipeline with formal support and service guarantees.
The clearest way to understand SF3D is as a very fast asset-blocking and ideation tool. Its UVs, textures and material estimates make the result more useful than a bare reconstruction, but those features do not remove the need for artistic inspection and production cleanup.
