There is no single free Photoshop replacement that does everything Photoshop does. For a full desktop workflow, start with Affinity by Canva if its current free terms and feature availability suit you. Choose Photopea for immediate browser-based PSD editing, GIMP for open-source raster editing, and Krita for digital painting, illustration, comics, and concept art.

The best choice depends on whether you edit photographs, paint, design social graphics, process RAW files, or need to exchange layered Photoshop documents. “Free” also has several meanings: open source, ad-supported, freemium, or merely a temporary trial.

For many creators, the most capable free setup is a combination: Darktable or RawTherapee for RAW files, Affinity or GIMP for compositing, Krita for painting, Inkscape for vector artwork, and Photopea for occasional PSD emergencies.
What counts as a free Photoshop alternative?
Before comparing applications, separate genuinely free software from free access with restrictions:
- Free and open source: GIMP, Krita, Inkscape, Darktable, and RawTherapee. These can generally be installed without a subscription, although brushes, plugins, fonts, and other add-ons may have separate licenses.
- Free proprietary software: Paint.NET and some browser editors. The application may be free while its development and licensing remain controlled by a company.
- Freemium services: Canva Free, Adobe Express Free, Pixlr, and some Photopea features. Expect locked tools, paid assets, advertising, account requirements, or cloud-dependent features.
- Trials: Photoshop’s seven-day full trial is an opportunity to test paid software, not a permanently free replacement.
A free app also does not make every included template, stock image, font, AI generation, brush, or plugin free for commercial use. Freelancers and businesses should check both the software license and the license for every asset used in a finished project.

Affinity by Canva is the most significant current development in this category. Current 2026 reviews report that Canva relaunched Affinity as a free application combining capabilities previously associated with Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer, and Affinity Publisher.
That combination makes it appealing to users who want more than a simple photo editor. A single desktop-oriented environment can cover raster editing, vector design, and page layout—useful for posters, illustrations, marketing graphics, and image composites.

Limitations to check
Affinity is not a perfect Photoshop replacement. Current coverage notes gaps in some advanced tools and newer Adobe AI capabilities. Before committing to it, check the official product and licensing information for your platform, particularly:
- Whether Windows, macOS, and iPad versions currently offer the same features
- Whether sign-in is required
- Which AI or cloud features require a Canva plan
- Current PSD import and export behavior
- Compatibility with Smart Objects, adjustment layers, text layers, and layer effects

2. Photopea: the best starting point for browser-based PSD work
Photopea is the most convenient choice when you need to edit immediately without installing software. It runs in a modern browser on systems including Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chromebooks, and its interface is deliberately familiar to Photoshop users.
What it does well
- Opens and exports common image formats, including PSD
- Provides layers, masks, selections, text, adjustments, and blend modes
- Works on computers where installing software is restricted
- Offers a practical emergency workflow for opening an old Photoshop file
Its free use is reported to be supported by advertising. Browser performance depends on available memory, the browser, image dimensions, layer count, and file size. Large projects are usually more comfortable in a dedicated desktop application.
PSD compatibility is not identical to Photoshop
Photopea may open a PSD successfully while changing or flattening parts of it. Test a copy of any important file containing:
- Smart Objects or linked assets
- Layer styles and advanced blending
- Adjustment layers, clipping masks, or vector masks
- Type layers and unusual fonts
- 16-bit or 32-bit color
- CMYK profiles, artboards, or plugin-generated effects
Keep the original PSD untouched, save a working copy, and compare the result visually and technically before delivering it. “PSD-compatible” means that a program can work with the format; it does not promise perfect round-tripping.
Because Photopea is browser-oriented, check its current privacy and file-handling information before editing confidential client work, identity documents, unpublished products, or other sensitive material.
3. GIMP: the leading open-source desktop option
GIMP is a powerful open-source raster editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It can replace many Photoshop tasks, including cropping, retouching, selections, layers, masks, compositing, and image manipulation.
Why choose GIMP?

- Runs locally and can be used offline after installation
- No subscription for the core application
- Large community, tutorial base, and ecosystem of plugins, scripts, brushes, and extensions
- Strong general-purpose raster-editing capabilities
GIMP is not “Photoshop but free.” Its interface, terminology, shortcuts, and workflow conventions differ substantially. Photoshop users may need time to rebuild habits, and complex PSD files will not necessarily preserve every layer, effect, text feature, or adjustment.
GIMP is a strong recommendation for users who value open-source flexibility, Linux support, and local file processing. It is less suitable if your work depends on exact Photoshop automation, Adobe plugins, or guaranteed PSD fidelity.

4. Krita: best for digital painting and illustration
Krita is primarily a digital-painting application, not a general Photoshop clone. Its strengths are brush-based creation, illustration, concept art, comics, manga, texture painting, and animation-oriented work. Download it from the official desktop page.
For painters, Krita can be a better choice than a broader photo editor because the application is organized around brushes, canvases, stabilizers, layers, and art production. It is especially well suited to artists working with a drawing tablet or creating original artwork from a blank canvas.
Choose GIMP, Affinity, or Photopea instead for ordinary photo retouching, complex Photoshop-file exchange, or a more photography-centered workflow. Krita’s PSD support is useful, but test the exact layer structure you depend on rather than assuming Photoshop-level fidelity.
5. Paint.NET: simple editing on Windows
Paint.NET is a lightweight Windows editor for users who find GIMP or Affinity excessive. It handles cropping, resizing, basic color correction, simple layers, text, screenshots, and quick image cleanup with less complexity than a professional suite.

Its trade-offs are equally clear: it is Windows-focused and less appropriate for demanding compositing, professional prepress, advanced illustration, or complex PSD workflows. Check the official site before installing plugins, and avoid unrelated download sites that use similar names.
6. Canva Free: fast template-led design
Canva is useful when “Photoshop alternative” really means “a quick way to make polished graphics.” Its template-led workflow is excellent for social posts, presentations, flyers, thumbnails, simple promotional graphics, brand templates, and rapid resizing.
It is not a traditional layer-based Photoshop replacement. Canva is a poor fit for detailed retouching, complex selections, high-end compositing, precise pixel work, or demanding prepress. The free plan may coexist with paid templates, stock media, fonts, brand tools, and AI features. Cloud workflows and account requirements may also matter for confidential work.
7. Adobe Express Free: quick design inside Adobe’s ecosystem
Adobe Express provides templates and quick-edit tools for social graphics, flyers, animations, collages, and related content. Its free plan can be convenient for users who already use Adobe services but do not need Photoshop’s full desktop feature set.

Adobe Express is not a replacement for advanced layer-based editing, professional retouching, complex compositing, or demanding print production. Some assets and features require a paid plan; check the current Express pricing page before relying on a particular tool.
8. Pixlr: quick browser edits and filters
Pixlr is aimed at convenience: fast online edits, filters, effects, social images, and automated tools such as basic background removal. It can be easier to approach than GIMP when the task is small and speed matters.
Pixlr is less suitable than Photopea for users whose main requirement is a Photoshop-like PSD workflow. Free-tier restrictions, advertising, accounts, AI allowances, and advanced-tool limits can change, so check the current pricing page. It is best treated as a quick-editing service rather than a complete offline professional editor.

Choose by task
I need to open and edit PSD files
Try Photopea first. If the files are business-critical, compare the output with Photoshop and test the actual PSD structures you use. Affinity or GIMP may be better for regular desktop work, but neither should be assumed to preserve every Photoshop feature.
I want an installed replacement
Choose Affinity for a polished broad workflow, GIMP for open-source independence and Linux support, or Paint.NET for straightforward Windows editing.
I draw more than I edit photographs
Choose Krita. It is designed around digital painting and illustration rather than treating painting as a secondary feature.
I make social posts, flyers, or thumbnails
Choose Canva Free or Adobe Express Free. Templates, preset formats, and rapid resizing are usually more efficient than manually constructing each design.

I process camera RAW files
Use Darktable or RawTherapee first, then send the developed image to GIMP, Affinity, or another compositor. RAW development is a separate category involving camera profiles, lens corrections, batch processing, cataloging, and non-destructive exposure adjustments.
I create vector logos or illustrations
Use Inkscape or Affinity’s vector tools if they are available under its current terms. Photoshop is primarily raster-oriented, so another photo editor may not be the right replacement.
Important limitations before you switch
PSD compatibility has several layers
Opening a PSD, preserving its layers, preserving editable text, reproducing its effects, supporting Smart Objects, and exporting a file that Photoshop interprets identically are different claims. Test real files containing Smart Objects, adjustment layers, masks, clipping masks, blend modes, linked assets, unusual fonts, high bit depths, CMYK profiles, artboards, and plugin effects.
Browser convenience can conflict with privacy
Photopea, Pixlr, Canva, and Adobe Express are browser- or cloud-oriented. Check whether files are processed locally or uploaded, whether an account is required, how files are retained, and whether your employer or client permits the service.

Free software does not guarantee free assets
Templates, fonts, stock images, video, audio, AI generations, background removal, brand kits, plugins, brushes, and exports may have separate restrictions. Review the applicable commercial-use terms before selling work or delivering it to a client.
Professional print work needs specialist checks
For prepress, verify CMYK support, ICC profiles, soft proofing, 16-bit workflows, PDF/X export, spot colors, bleed, crop marks, and font embedding. A tool that is excellent for social media may be unsuitable for a print-production workflow.
Plugins and shortcuts do not transfer automatically
Photoshop plugins, actions, scripts, brushes, presets, and keyboard shortcuts may need replacement or conversion. File compatibility, interface familiarity, tool compatibility, automation compatibility, and asset compatibility are separate concerns.
How to switch without losing work
- Keep untouched originals. Never overwrite the original PSD, RAW file, or project file while testing.
- Make a working copy. Open and save copies in the replacement application.
- Test representative projects. Include your largest file and the features you use most often.
- Export fallback formats. Keep flattened TIFF or PNG files for visual reference, and use JPEG only where compression is acceptable. Export SVG for vector artwork and an appropriate PDF for sharing or print.
- Rebuild your working environment. Replace brushes, plugins, scripts, presets, shortcuts, and fonts instead of assuming they will transfer.
- Keep Photoshop access when necessary. Files dependent on Adobe-specific Smart Objects, plugins, automation, or advanced AI may still require Photoshop for final revisions.
What does Photoshop cost if free is not enough?
Adobe’s US plans page has recently listed Photoshop at US$22.99 per month on an annual plan billed monthly, and a Photography plan including Photoshop and Lightroom at US$19.99 per month on an annual plan billed monthly. Adobe also lists a seven-day full Photoshop trial. These are US prices; taxes, promotions, billing terms, eligibility, and regional pricing can change. Check the official plans page before subscribing.
A paid plan solves specific problems: maximum PSD fidelity, Adobe integrations, established agency workflows, advanced AI tools, and compatibility with Photoshop plugins and automation. It is harder to justify for occasional cropping, simple composites, digital painting, or template-led social content.
Other paid upgrades solve different problems. Affinity may suit users wanting a broad desktop workflow; Photopea Premium may suit frequent browser users who want fewer restrictions or ads; Canva Pro is aimed at premium templates, assets, brand tools, collaboration, and AI; Adobe Express Premium is aimed at expanded quick-design features. None should be mistaken for a universal Photoshop substitute.
