Krita is the best overall free and open-source alternative to Adobe Fresco for serious digital painting, illustration, comics, textures, concept art, and 2D animation. MyPaint is better for lightweight, natural-media sketching; GIMP is stronger for painting combined with photo editing; Inkscape is the right choice for vector artwork; and Tux Paint is designed for children.
There is one important limitation: no exact open-source Fresco replacement was identified for iPad and iPhone. Krita is available for desktop platforms and Android tablets, but its official download page says iPadOS and iOS are unsupported.

These applications do not replace the same part of Fresco. Krita and MyPaint replace the brush-and-canvas experience most directly. GIMP replaces more of an image-editing workflow, while Inkscape covers vector illustration. Tux Paint is a deliberately simplified drawing environment rather than a professional art application.

Best overall: Krita
Krita is the strongest one-application recommendation for most Fresco users who want free, open-source software. It is built around digital painting rather than treating painting as a secondary feature inside a general-purpose image editor.
Its workflow suits illustration, concept art, matte painting, textures, comics, and animation, according to Krita’s documentation. Artists get customizable brush engines, pressure-sensitive tablet input, layer groups, blending modes, stabilizers, assistants, selections, transformations, and tools for comic and animation work.
Krita uses the native .kra format for preserving its working documents. It also works with common interchange formats, but compatibility should not be confused with perfect round-tripping: PSD files, for example, may contain content that another application interprets as text or as a paint layer.
Platforms and requirements
The official download page lists Krita 5.3.3, released July 29, 2026. Its listed requirements include Windows 8.1 or later, macOS 10.15 or later, Linux, at least 4 GB of RAM, and 16 GB recommended for a more comfortable setup. Graphics acceleration requires OpenGL 3.0 or Direct3D 11.

Krita also has Android arm64 builds. Android support is not the same as iPad parity: performance, screen size, stylus behavior, palm rejection, available RAM, and external-keyboard support can determine whether an Android tablet is suitable for production work.
Important: Krita’s official download information says iPads and iPhones are not supported. It is therefore an excellent desktop or Android recommendation, but not an iPad Fresco replacement.
Free download versus paid store versions
The website version of Krita is free. Windows Store and Steam versions cost money, but Krita’s documentation says they are functionally identical; the paid versions primarily offer store-based updates and a way to support development. They are not premium editions with extra painting features. See the installation documentation for the distinction.
Best lightweight natural-media painter: MyPaint
MyPaint is the best fit when the main goal is to sketch quickly with a pressure-sensitive tablet and as little interface friction as possible. It offers an infinite canvas, configurable brushes, layers, fullscreen mode, and a pigment-style color model. Its brushes are aimed at evoking pencils, charcoal, ink, and paint.
That focus makes MyPaint feel closer to a digital sketchbook than to a complete production suite. It is particularly useful for exploratory drawing, gesture work, loose studies, and natural-media marks.

MyPaint is less suitable for advanced typography, complex selections and compositing, robust animation, or a large professional production pipeline. Its official site currently lists version 2.0.1, and the project’s release history shows that the major 2.0 line originated in 2020. That does not make it unusable, but its release cadence should not be assumed to match Krita or GIMP.
For file exchange, MyPaint documents support OpenRaster, while PNG and JPG are useful for rendered output. The project’s interoperability documentation recommends PNG when a lossless rendered image is needed. For many artists, the most effective arrangement is MyPaint for fast sketching followed by Krita for layers, cleanup, text, compositing, or animation.
Best for painting plus image editing: GIMP
GIMP is the better choice when painting is only one part of the job. It is a mature, cross-platform, free and open-source image editor with color-management features, plugins, retouching, compositing, and batch-processing capabilities.
GIMP 3.2 makes it more relevant to artists than older comparison articles may suggest. The release added or improved vector layers, SVG export, expanded PDF vector options, PSD import, and MyPaint brushes. The current stable download page lists GIMP 3.2.4, released April 17, 2026. These are meaningful improvements, but they do not make GIMP identical to Krita or Fresco.
Choose GIMP when photo correction, compositing, color-managed output, or plugin-based work matters as much as painting. Choose Krita when the center of the workflow is drawing and painting itself. GIMP can produce painted artwork, but its interface and tool organization are not as specifically centered on a Fresco-like artist’s canvas.

Use the stable download page, not a development build, for production work. GIMP warns that development releases may crash and are not ready for production use.

Inkscape belongs in this comparison because some Fresco users are actually looking for an illustration tool rather than a natural-media painting tool. Inkscape is an open-source SVG and vector editor suited to logos, icons, diagrams, typography-heavy artwork, clean line art, and assets that must scale to any size without becoming pixelated.
The distinction is fundamental:
- Raster graphics are made from pixels and are best for painterly brushes, texture, shading, and natural-media effects.
- Vector graphics are defined by mathematically described paths and are best for clean shapes, logos, scalable line work, and typography.
Inkscape is therefore a complement to Krita, not a direct replacement for Fresco’s textured raster painting or frame-by-frame painted animation. Consult Inkscape’s release page and learning resources for current platform and version information.

Tux Paint is free and open source under the GPL version 2, with no advertisements. Its official description targets children roughly ages 3–12, schools, libraries, and family computers. The current download page lists version 0.9.35.
Its simple interface, stamps, sounds, and immediate feedback are strengths for young children and early learners. They are also why it is not a serious Fresco substitute for professional illustration, advanced brushes, layer-heavy production, animation, or sophisticated color workflows.

Best open-source combinations
No single open-source program reproduces every part of Adobe’s painting, vector, photo, typography, asset-library, cloud, and cross-device ecosystem. A small combination can cover more ground:
- Krita + Inkscape: raster painting, comics, and animation in Krita; vector logos, clean line art, and scalable design in Inkscape.
- Krita + GIMP: painting and animation in Krita; retouching, compositing, batch work, and image preparation in GIMP.
- MyPaint + Krita: quick natural-media sketches in MyPaint; structured finishing and production in Krita.
- Krita + GIMP + Inkscape: the broadest open-source replacement for several separate Adobe functions.

How to move from Fresco without losing work
- Keep the original Fresco projects. Do not treat an export as a substitute for the source document.
- Export a layered format where available. Depending on the source and destination, this may include PSD or OpenRaster.
- Export a flattened PNG or TIFF as a visual reference. This gives you a reliable comparison even if editable features do not transfer.
- Open a representative project in Krita or GIMP. Test a complex file before migrating the entire archive.
- Check layers, opacity, blend modes, masks, text, colors, and dimensions. App-specific features may flatten, change appearance, or disappear.
- Compare animation separately. A file that transfers correctly as a still image may not preserve its timeline or animation metadata.
- Save a native copy in the new application. Use
.krafor Krita or the appropriate native format for the application you choose.
Expect possible losses involving live or dynamic brushes, cloud-document metadata, editable vector/raster relationships, masks, blend modes, color-profile information, and animation timelines. Do not assume direct Adobe Fresco document compatibility unless the current export and import documentation explicitly confirms it.
How to choose
- Choose Krita if you want one serious open-source painting application for illustration, comics, concept art, textures, or 2D animation.
- Choose MyPaint if you want a quiet, infinite sketching canvas and natural-media brushes, especially with a pressure-sensitive tablet.
- Choose GIMP if retouching, compositing, color management, batch processing, or plugins matter as much as painting.
- Choose Inkscape if your work is primarily logos, icons, diagrams, typography, or scalable line art.
- Choose Tux Paint if the user is a child or beginner and simplicity matters more than professional features.
- For animation, start with Krita. The other listed applications do not provide the same painting-oriented animation workflow.
- For iPad work, set expectations carefully. The open-source choices covered here do not provide a verified exact equivalent to Fresco’s iPad workflow.
Do you need a graphics tablet?
No. You can draw with a mouse, trackpad, touchscreen, or stylus, but pressure-sensitive hardware usually makes painting and sketching substantially more natural. Wacom, Huion, and XP-Pen all make relevant hardware, but compatibility depends on the operating system, driver, tablet model, stylus protocol, and application settings.
Before committing to a workflow, test the actual combination of tablet, driver, operating system, and application. Pressure, tilt, rotation, eraser input, calibration, and palm rejection are separate capabilities and should not be treated as guaranteed by the phrase “tablet support.”
Can these applications work offline?
The desktop applications are designed as locally installed software and can be used offline after installation. They do not reproduce Fresco’s cloud synchronization and cross-device continuity, so maintain your own backups and transfer files manually when moving between devices.
