To export a Canva design with a transparent canvas, remove or set aside its background, then choose Share > Download, select PNG, enable Transparent background, and download the page. To cut the background out of a photo instead, select the image and use BG Remover before exporting as PNG.
These are separate tasks: a transparent canvas export does not remove the background pixels from a photo. Canva’s transparent-background download is available on eligible paid plans and is not available for Canva Docs.

PNG is a raster format that supports transparency. SVG also supports transparency and is a vector format suited to graphics that need to scale without losing quality. Canva lists transparent PNG and SVG downloads on eligible plans.
Export a Canva design with a transparent background
- Open the design in Canva. The transparent-background download option is not available for Canva Docs.
- Set the canvas background color to white or delete the existing background image or element. Remove any full-page rectangle or other background object that should not appear in the exported file.
- Choose Share, then Download.
- Select PNG as the file type.
- Enable Transparent background.
- Select the page or pages to download.
- Select Download.
The transparent setting is a download option. A white canvas color can function as the transparent canvas when that option is enabled. Check the Layers panel or select the area behind the artwork to find unwanted background elements: the setting will not remove a white rectangle that is part of the design.

Canva says transparent-background downloads are available on Canva Pro, Canva Teams, Canva Business, Canva Education, and Canva for Nonprofits. If the option does not appear, confirm that PNG is selected, check that your account has an eligible plan, and make sure the design is not a Canva Doc.
Remove the background from a photo
- Open a design or create one and upload the photo, or select an image already on the canvas.
- Select the image.
- Choose BG Remover from the image-editing options.
- Wait for Canva to process the image.
- Review the cutout and use the erase or restore controls to refine it.
- Download the result as a PNG with Transparent background enabled when the option is available to your account.
Canva lists JPG, PNG, HEIC, and HEIF as supported upload formats for its background-removal feature. Background Remover is included with paid plans, according to Canva Help Center. The exact menu placement may vary by editor or device, so select the image and look for BG Remover.

A checkerboard in the editor indicates transparent pixels; it is not part of the exported image. PNG supports transparency, while JPEG does not. After downloading, place the PNG over a colored shape or background to check that the surrounding area is transparent.

For an uploaded logo
Select the logo and use BG Remover. Inspect the letters, thin lines, and interior spaces, and refine the cutout with erase and restore controls. Then download it as a PNG with a transparent background if your account supports that option.

For a logo built in Canva
Remove or set aside the page background and any background shapes, then export as a PNG with Transparent background enabled. If the logo must retain sharp edges at different sizes, consider SVG export when it is available for the design and plan.
Why does my transparent PNG still look white?
Check these common causes:
- You downloaded a JPEG rather than a PNG.
- You did not enable Transparent background in the download settings.
- A background image, page element, or white rectangle remains in the design.
- The design is a Canva Doc, or the account plan does not support the transparent-background option.
- The app or document where you are viewing the image displays transparent areas as white, or the image is on a white background.
To test the file, place it over a colored shape in Canva or another editor. If the color shows through around the artwork, the PNG contains transparent pixels.

How do I make a background transparent in Canva?
For a design canvas, remove or set aside its background, choose Share > Download, select PNG, enable Transparent background, and download. For a photo cutout, use BG Remover on the selected image first.

Why can’t I see the Transparent background option?
Check that PNG is selected, that your account is on a plan Canva lists as eligible, and that the design is not a Canva Doc. Canva’s Help Center lists Canva Pro, Canva Teams, Canva Business, Canva Education, and Canva for Nonprofits as eligible plans.

Can I remove a photo background just by downloading a transparent canvas?
No. The transparent-canvas setting removes the design background, not the background pixels in a photo. Use BG Remover to cut the photo background out.
Should I download a transparent design as PNG or SVG?
PNG is suitable for transparent raster images. SVG is a vector format suited to graphics that need to retain quality at different sizes. Canva lists both transparent PNG and SVG options on eligible plans.
