Edges2cats was a 2017 browser experiment by Christopher Hesse that transformed a simple line drawing into a cat-like photograph. Built with Google’s TensorFlow and reportedly trained on about 2,000 stock cat photos, it could produce surprisingly convincing results—but also malformed, uncanny creatures when the drawing was ambiguous or outside the model’s narrow expectations.
The “any doodle” promise was playful headline language, not a guarantee that the system understood every drawing. Edges2cats tried to map edge patterns to something cat-shaped, even when the input gave it very little useful information.

What was Edges2cats?
Edges2cats was a small but memorable machine-learning experiment created by Christopher Hesse and hosted under his Affine Layer website. It appeared during a period when image-to-image experiments were making machine learning visible to people who had never used a model or written code.
The original idea was simple: draw an outline in a plain white canvas, then let the model convert those edges into a photographic-looking cat. Instead of asking for a cat with words, the user supplied a rough visual structure—something closer to a sketch, silhouette, or edge map.
Contemporary reporting identified Google’s TensorFlow as the machine-learning framework behind the experiment and described the training material as approximately 2,000 stock cat photographs. That was a small and highly specialized training set by modern standards, which helps explain both the experiment’s charm and its limitations.
How the experiment worked
- Draw in the canvas. The user made a doodle or outline in the browser’s white drawing area.
- Submit the drawing for processing. The system treated the marks as visual edges rather than as a human-readable description.
- Receive a generated image. The model attempted to fill in the missing information with cat-like anatomy, fur, facial features, lighting, and other photographic details.
- Try again. The fun was often in testing increasingly strange, incomplete, or deliberately non-cat drawings.
Exact button labels, shortcuts, export controls, and browser requirements are not reliably documented in the available contemporary coverage. If the original page loads, the safest description is simply to draw on the canvas and use the interface’s available submission or processing control.

An image-to-image model does not need every detail to produce a plausible result. If its training examples repeatedly connect certain arrangements of edges with cat faces, ears, bodies, and poses, it can use those patterns as a starting point. It then supplies details that were never present in the doodle.

That is why a sparse outline could sometimes result in a recognizable cat. The model was not copying the exact pixels of a particular photograph. It was generating an image consistent with visual patterns learned from its cat-focused examples.
This also makes Edges2cats an early, compact example of a principle that remains important in generative AI: an output can look detailed without being accurate. Photographic texture and fur do not prove that the system correctly understood the source drawing.
Why do the cats become horrifying?
The unsettling results were not simply random glitches. They were predictable consequences of a narrow model being asked to interpret incomplete visual information.
Ambiguous outlines
A person can recognize intention from a few suggestive marks. A machine-learning model, however, receives the particular arrangement of pixels or edges that the experiment makes available. A line that a person sees as an ear might be interpreted as part of a face, body, or background.
Missing facial structure
The Verge’s contemporary testing highlighted a particularly important problem: automatically detected edges often failed to capture eyes. When the features that anchor a face are absent or unclear, the generated eyes and surrounding anatomy can end up in implausible places.

A limited training domain
Edges2cats was designed around cat imagery, not around a general understanding of objects, anatomy, or perspective. Its training gave it a strong bias toward producing cats, but not necessarily toward producing the right cat for an unusual input.
Out-of-distribution drawings
A cat-shaped outline is relatively close to what the model was built to handle. A symbol, abstract shape, protest drawing, scribble, or unrelated object is much farther away. The system may still attempt to return an image, but the result can be an implausible animal or a visual artifact with cat-like fragments.
Contemporary users tested the boundaries with examples including a “furbird,” a cat-bunny, and protest-style drawings. These experiments demonstrated the difference between producing an output and understanding an input.
Does it really turn any doodle into a cat?
No—not in the ordinary meaning of “understand.” The tool could attempt to produce a cat-like image from almost any set of marks, but that did not mean it could reliably identify what the doodle represented.
“Any doodle” is best read as a playful description of the experiment’s behavior. The system was likely to force unsuitable inputs into its learned cat-shaped visual world. Depending on the drawing, the result might be:

- a partially formed or distorted image; or
- a disturbing visual artifact that looks more like machine-generated anatomy than a real animal.
In other words, it could return an image without successfully interpreting the drawing.
What should you draw for better results?
There do not appear to be verified official drawing requirements, so these are practical suggestions inferred from the experiment’s edge-based behavior—not guaranteed settings.
- Use clear, high-contrast lines. Make the main outline easy to distinguish from empty space.
- Give the drawing a cat-like structure. A visible head, body, ears, and legs provide more useful cues than an abstract scribble.
- Draw the eyes deliberately. Since eyes were reported as a weak point in automatic edge detection, explicit facial marks may help, although they cannot guarantee a good result.
- Keep the composition simple. One primary subject is easier to interpret than several overlapping objects.
- Avoid excessive detail. Tiny marks may disappear or become ambiguous during edge processing.
- Try conventional and absurd versions. If the goal is a recognizable cat, use a clean silhouette. If the goal is to see the model fail, remove features, add misleading shapes, or draw something clearly unrelated.
A good drawing for Edges2cats was therefore not necessarily a good drawing in an artistic sense. It was a drawing whose structure happened to resemble the kinds of edge arrangements the model could use.

Results are likely to become less reliable with very small or sparse marks, dense scribbling, missing facial features, multiple overlapping subjects, and fine details that are difficult to preserve as edges. Sideways or upside-down compositions, highly abstract designs, and deliberately non-cat inputs also push the system away from its intended domain.
Even a carefully drawn cat can fail. The model was probabilistic and the input representation was limited, so a structurally reasonable outline did not guarantee correct anatomy, perspective, or expression.

Was this modern generative AI?
It is reasonable to call Edges2cats an early machine-learning image-generation or image-translation experiment. It is not accurate to treat it as equivalent to today’s broad text-to-image systems.
Edges2cats accepted a hand-drawn edge-style image, not a natural-language prompt. Its output space was strongly restricted by cat-focused training. It did not offer the same breadth of subjects, styles, composition controls, or conversational editing associated with newer systems.
Its historical importance comes partly from that simplicity. A user could see, in one interaction, how a model might transform one visual representation into another—and how confidently it could fill in information that was never actually supplied.
What else did Christopher Hesse make?
The same contemporary reporting described related drawing experiments for building facades, shoes, and handbags. These should be understood as companion demonstrations from the same creator, not as evidence of a single general-purpose drawing recognizer or as a guarantee that those pages remain available.

A failed fetch does not prove that the experiment has been permanently shut down, but it does mean the page should not be described as reliably live or working today.
Archived screenshots, videos, or contemporary articles may therefore be more dependable for seeing the experiment than the original interface. They can show what Edges2cats produced in 2017, but they cannot guarantee that a modern browser will reproduce the same interaction or results.
Why Edges2cats still matters
Edges2cats made machine-learning failure unusually easy to understand. A polished cat face next to a crude outline looks impressive; a cat with misplaced eyes, tangled anatomy, or an accidental second face makes the limitation obvious.
The lesson is broader than this one web toy. A model can perform impressively inside a narrow learned domain while struggling with inputs that humans consider obvious variations. It can also generate confident-looking detail where the evidence is weak. Edges2cats turned that gap between visual plausibility and genuine understanding into a funny—and occasionally frightening—browser experiment.
