The right InDesign resume template makes your experience easy to scan, leaves room for meaningful accomplishments, and exports to a readable PDF. InDesign is especially useful for creative professionals who need precise control over typography and layout, but a visually elaborate resume is not automatically the best choice for every application.
Before choosing a template, check its editable files, page size, layout, licensing, and suitability for the way you will submit it. Keep a simpler, text-forward version available when an employer or application system needs structured resume information.
How to choose a template for your needs
| Your use case | Look for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| General applications | A restrained one-column layout with clear headings, dates, employers, and achievements. | Decorative elements that crowd out experience or make information harder to find. |
| Designers and art directors | Portfolio or project sections, adaptable colors, and space for clients, awards, or software. | Visual branding that overwhelms evidence of your work and results. |
| Photographers and visual artists | Editable image placeholders, captions, and optional portfolio pages. | Layouts that give images more space than relevant experience. |
| Students and early-career applicants | A focused one-page layout with room for education, projects, internships, and volunteer work. | Inflated-looking sections or tiny type used to fill space. |
| Experienced professionals | A clear two-page option with room for selected achievements, leadership, or certifications. | Overcrowding or shrinking type just to fit content onto one page. |
| Freelancers and entrepreneurs | Sections for clients, projects, services, and a portfolio or website. | A layout built only around conventional employer history. |
| Print use | The required paper size and documented print settings, including bleed where needed. | Assuming a “print-ready” label guarantees suitability for your printer or workflow. |
What to check before downloading
Template listings and availability can change. Treat marketplace descriptions as promotional information, not independent testing or proof of hiring outcomes. Check the individual product page for current files, licensing, paper sizes, and terms before downloading. The Envato roundup can help with discovery, but does not establish that every listed item is currently available or independently verified.
- Editability: Confirm that text and relevant graphics can be changed, rather than being flattened into a preview image or PDF.
- File completeness: Look for an InDesign working file, not only a PDF preview. Check whether fonts and linked graphics are included or identified.
- Organization: Named layers and paragraph or character styles make revisions easier and safer.
- Content capacity: Make sure the layout accommodates your actual experience without sacrificing readable type or accomplishments.
- Paper size and print settings: Confirm whether the file is A4, US Letter, or supplied in both sizes. Check print details rather than relying on a listing label.
- License and price: Read the terms for the specific download. “Free” may involve an account, attribution, restrictions, or other conditions.
- Extras: Check whether a cover letter, portfolio pages, or alternative colorways are actually included.
InDesign file formats explained
| Format | What it is |
|---|---|
| INDD | The native InDesign document and usually the main working file. |
| INDT | An InDesign template file for creating a document from a preset. |
| IDML | An interchange format that can help with compatibility across InDesign releases. |
| A preview or exported document; normally not the best editable source. | |
| DOC or DOCX | A Word version, if the package includes one. |
| AI, EPS, or PSD | Supporting Illustrator or Photoshop assets, not substitutes for the InDesign document. |
InDesign, Word, Google Docs, or an online builder?
| Tool | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| InDesign | Precise typography, grids, images, print, and creative presentation. | Requires more design work and may be less convenient for conventional submissions. |
| Word or Google Docs | Highly conventional business, government, education, and administrative applications. | Offers less control over complex page composition. |
| Online builder | Fast resume creation without much layout work. | Customization, export options, or portability may depend on the platform or subscription. |
A hybrid workflow can cover both needs: use a polished InDesign PDF for direct applications, networking, print, or creative roles, and keep a simpler text-forward version for portals or employers that request DOCX. A designed PDF may work well for a human reader, but appearance alone does not show whether an application system will extract its contents correctly.

How to customize an InDesign resume template
- Duplicate the original. Keep an untouched copy and make changes in a duplicate.
- Check document setup. Confirm page size, page count, margins, columns, and any print settings relevant to your use.
- Identify the fonts. Install the supplied fonts or identify suitable replacements. Font changes can alter line breaks and page count; check licensing and character coverage.
- Edit styles globally. Use paragraph and character styles to adjust type, spacing, colors, and bullets consistently.
- Replace placeholders with relevant evidence. Remove sections you do not need. Describe outcomes such as revenue growth, reduced production time, completed projects, audiences reached, or budgets managed when those details are accurate for your experience.
- Check for overset text. Inspect text frames after editing so content is not hidden.
- Review visual devices. Replace subjective skill bars or star ratings with named skills, software, certifications, or evidence.
- Preflight and export. Check fonts, linked graphics, text, page order, contact details, dates, and URLs. Export a PDF and inspect it at normal and reduced viewing sizes. Check that text is selectable when that matters for digital submission.
Layout choices and trade-offs
One column or two?
One-column layouts are generally easier to scan, edit, print, and adapt. Two-column layouts use space efficiently and can look distinctive, but may complicate reading order and later expansion. For a general-purpose resume, favor a clear one-column design unless you understand the trade-offs.
Color or monochrome?
Color can establish identity and hierarchy, but poor contrast or a palette that does not suit the application can work against readability. Prefer a template whose colors can be changed or removed consistently.
Should you include a photo?
A photo may suit some regions, creative portfolios, or personal-brand materials, but is unnecessary or undesirable in many hiring contexts. Treat the photo area as optional and choose a layout that remains balanced without it.

Are skill charts and icons useful?
Charts and icons can support a visual portfolio, but skill ratings can be subjective and may be harder for software to interpret. Do not let them replace searchable skill names or concrete accomplishments.
Should your resume be one page or two?
A one-page format can suit students, early-career applicants, and focused applications. Two pages can suit substantial relevant experience. Avoid shrinking type excessively just to force your content onto one page.
Paper size, print, and PDF usability
A4 is common internationally, while US Letter is standard in the United States. Changing a document from one size to the other may create awkward whitespace or reflow, so check both the InDesign file and final PDF. “Print-ready” should be treated as the creator’s description unless you have checked the file against your own printer or workflow.
Rank #3
- Made in United States
Visual inspection is not a formal accessibility or PDF-compliance review. Likewise, do not call a design “ATS-friendly” based on appearance alone. Multiple text boxes, unusual reading order, icons replacing labels, text embedded in images, tiny type, and low contrast can create readability or extraction risks.
Free and paid templates
Free downloads may require an account, attribution, a particular application, font substitutions, or manual cleanup, and may have usage restrictions. Read the license on the individual download page rather than inferring permission from the word “free.” Availability can change.
An individual purchase may suit someone who needs one template. A subscription library may be useful if you also need multiple layouts or other creative assets, but check the current plan, item license, and download terms. For example, Envato Elements pricing and Adobe Stock plans describe their respective offerings; confirm current terms before purchasing. Adobe’s InDesign plans page has current software plan information.

Resume and CV are not always interchangeable
Usage varies by country and profession. A U.S. job application usually means a concise resume, while an academic CV may include publications, teaching, research, grants, and conferences. A visual one-page resume template is not automatically suitable for an academic CV.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is InDesign good for resumes?
Yes, especially for designers and other creative applicants who need precise control over typography, images, grids, or print layout. It is not automatically better than Word or Google Docs for conventional applications.

What is the difference between INDD and IDML?
INDD is the native InDesign document. IDML is an interchange format that can help with compatibility across InDesign releases.
Should I use A4 or US Letter?
Use the size expected by the employer, country, or printer. A4 is common internationally, and US Letter is standard in the United States.
Should I include a photo?
Include one only if it fits the norms of your region, profession, and target employer. Make sure the layout still works if you remove it.
Is an academic CV different from a regular resume?
Yes. An academic CV may include publications, teaching, research, grants, and conferences, and can be much longer than a concise resume.
Do I need a matching cover-letter template?
No. A matching layout can make a direct application visually consistent, but relevant content matters more than matching graphics.
