An ICC profile describes color characteristics of a display so Windows and compatible apps can use that information when rendering color. To install one, open Settings > System > Display > Color profile, select the intended monitor, add the appropriate profile, and then set it as that display’s profile.
Adding a profile and making it the default are separate steps. Installing a supplied profile does not mean your individual monitor has been measured or calibrated, and a profile cannot expand the display’s physical color gamut.
What an ICC profile does
An ICC profile describes color characteristics and supports transformations between color spaces. What you see depends on the monitor, its picture mode, Windows, and the application. A profile can help compatible software handle color consistently, but it does not guarantee identical results in every app, game, browser, or HDR workflow.

Keep these tasks distinct:
- Adding a profile: Makes a profile available in Windows.
- Setting a default profile: Associates the selected profile with the intended display.
- Calibrating and profiling: Adjusts or measures a display and creates a profile for the resulting display behavior.
A manufacturer profile is intended for a particular display model or operating mode; it is not proof that your individual panel was measured.

Choose how to get a profile
Choose an approach based on your display and how precise your color work needs to be:
| Approach | What it does | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer profile | Provides a profile intended for a display model and, where specified, an operating mode. | Use the profile supplied for your exact monitor when available. |
| Windows Calibrate display | Guides you through calibration and creates a profile for the display. | Useful for a built-in calibration route without a separate measuring instrument. |
| Colorimeter and profiling software | Measures your display and supports creating a custom profile for that individual unit. | Consider for color-critical work or when you need a measured profile. |
A profile intended for a different monitor should not be treated as a measured description of your display. For guidance on finding display profiles, see the International Color Consortium.
Before you begin
- Open Settings > System > Display. If you have multiple monitors, use the display selector to identify the one you want to configure.
- Find the exact monitor model and check its manufacturer support information for a profile and any specified operating mode.
- If you downloaded a profile in an archive, extract it before browsing for the profile file.
- Decide whether you need an existing profile, Windows’ calibration process, or a custom measured profile.
Microsoft’s Windows display guidance describes the color-profile controls and calibration options.

Install and set a profile in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to System > Display > Color profile.
- Select the display you want to manage. Check this carefully if more than one display is connected.
- Select Add profile and locate the appropriate profile file.
- Select or expand the profile you added, then choose Set profile to make it the default for that display.
- Close and reopen any color-sensitive application you are testing.
The Settings page also provides options to remove a profile, access display calibration, and enable automatic color management. The exact controls available can depend on the display and system support.
Calibrate the display in Windows
Windows provides a Calibrate display option on the Color profile page. Following its steps creates a profile for the display where the calibration tool is located. This is a different task from adding a profile supplied by a manufacturer.
For an HDR-enabled external display, Microsoft directs users from this control to the Windows HDR Calibration app. Use that HDR-specific route rather than treating a standard SDR profile as a complete HDR calibration.

Automatic color management and Advanced Color
Automatically manage color for apps is a separate setting, not another name for assigning an ICC profile. It is available only where the display and system support it. Microsoft describes it as system-level color management intended to improve color consistency and rendering across apps.

Advanced Color can change how apps interact with display ICC profiles. If an older ICC-aware app behaves unexpectedly while Advanced Color is enabled, Windows 11 has a per-app Use legacy display ICC color management option in the app executable’s Compatibility settings. Microsoft notes that this option is not enabled by default and applies when Advanced Color is enabled. See Microsoft’s Advanced Color and ICC profile guidance. Treat this as a troubleshooting option, not a routine step for every app.
HDR and color profiles
HDR and SDR can follow different color-management behavior. A standard SDR ICC profile is not a complete HDR calibration solution. For an HDR-enabled external display, use the Windows HDR Calibration app as directed from the Color profile page, and assess SDR and HDR workflows separately.

How to verify the profile
- Return to Settings > System > Display > Color profile.
- Confirm that the intended monitor is selected.
- Check that the intended profile is listed and set as the default for that display.
- Reopen the color-sensitive application you want to use.
- Check whether its color handling matches your needs; do not assume every app uses the profile in the same way.
Troubleshooting
The profile is not active
- Confirm that you selected the correct display.
- Check that you added the profile and then separately chose Set profile.
- Reopen the app you are testing and check its color-management behavior.
An app shows unexpected colors
Check whether the app supports the color-management behavior you expect. If Advanced Color is enabled and an older ICC-aware app behaves unexpectedly, consider the per-app Use legacy display ICC color management compatibility option in Windows 11.
I need a profile measured for my monitor
Use compatible profiling software and a monitor calibration colorimeter to measure the display and create a custom profile. Check that the instrument and software support your Windows version and workflow. A colorimeter is not required to add an existing profile.

Does installing an ICC profile calibrate my monitor?
No. Adding a profile makes it available, and setting it as default associates it with a display. Windows’ Calibrate display tool creates a profile through its calibration steps; a compatible colorimeter can measure an individual display for custom profiling.
Do I need a colorimeter to install a profile?
No. A colorimeter is optional and is used for measuring a display and creating a custom profile, not for adding an existing profile supplied for a monitor.
Why does an ICC profile look different in some apps?
Apps can handle color differently, and Advanced Color can affect ICC behavior. Check the app’s color-management support and, if needed, the Windows 11 per-app legacy ICC compatibility option.
