The right printer for giclée prints depends first on the largest size you need and how often you print. For a desktop studio, Epson’s SureColor SC-P900 is a candidate with fine-art sheet feeding and an optional roll unit; for sustained, very wide production, Epson’s 64-inch SureColor P20570 is a different, production-class option. Neither a printer model nor the word “giclée” guarantees print quality: the file, ink, paper, color workflow, settings, and handling all matter.
These are feature-based fits, not winners from a controlled head-to-head print test. Before buying, check current local specifications and pricing, your intended media, ink and maintenance costs, available space, and expected print volume.
What makes a printer suitable for giclée prints?
“Giclée” is used for fine-art inkjet printing, but it is not a universal printer certification or a guarantee of quality. A sound fine-art workflow pairs an accurate source file with a suitable ink system and coated media, correct printer settings and color management, and careful handling and display.

- Use an appropriate printer-and-paper profile and avoid applying color management twice.
- Proof the work and inspect it under consistent lighting before making a final print.
- Handle, dry, store, and display prints in ways suited to the paper and ink.
Pigment ink is a relevant consideration for permanence-oriented fine-art work, but ink type alone does not establish how long a particular print will last. Media, image content, light, humidity, atmosphere, and display conditions affect stability.

Epson SureColor SC-P900: desktop fine-art candidate
The SC-P900 is worth considering if you want a desktop-format printer with fine-art sheet feeding and the option of a roll unit. Epson lists a ten-colour UltraChrome Pro ink system, media-profile settings, and an additional maintenance box. Verify the paper dimensions and thickness, feed path, and profile for the specific media you plan to use.
Account for setup and upkeep as well as the purchase price. Epson notes that supplied ink is used during initial setup and that ink and maintenance-box service life will be limited afterward. The research did not establish a complete total-cost figure or a current regional price.

Consider it if: your studio needs desktop-class fine-art handling and the printer’s supported sheet or optional roll workflow fits your work.
Think carefully if: you print infrequently, need substantially wider output, or have not budgeted for ink, maintenance, media, and proofing.
Epson SureColor P20570: production-class wide-format option
The P20570 serves a different need from a desktop printer. Epson’s April 10, 2024 announcement identifies it as a 64-inch device aimed at high-volume fine-art and photography production, with a 12-channel head, UltraChrome PRO12 pigment ink, support for thick fine-art media, and a high-capacity ink-pack system.
Epson’s announcement stated production speed of over 200 square feet per hour; treat that as a manufacturer claim, not an independent comparison result. The device’s width and production orientation may suit a print business or studio with sustained demand, but bring greater space and workflow requirements than a desktop model.

Think carefully if: you mainly make small prints or do not have regular demand to support a production-class machine.
Compare printers by the needs of your work
- Choose maximum print width. Decide the largest sheet or roll output you actually expect to produce; desktop and 64-inch production devices serve different jobs.
- Estimate print volume. Consider how many prints you make and their sizes, not just occasional peak demand.
- Check ink and workflow. Compare ink type, profiles, software support, setup consumption, maintenance, and the supplies required for your exact model.
- Confirm media compatibility. Check paper thickness, coating, finish, dimensions, feed path, and the correct printer settings with the printer and paper makers.
- Assess total ownership needs. Include ink, paper, maintenance, test prints, space, storage, and your time. The research did not establish a universal cost-per-print or break-even point.
Ink count is not a quality guarantee
Epson specifies ten UltraChrome Pro colours for the SC-P900 and UltraChrome PRO12 pigment ink for the P20570. Ink systems are one useful comparison point, but the number of colours alone does not prove that one printer makes better prints. Source-file preparation, paper choice, profiles, settings, and viewing conditions also affect the result.
No controlled head-to-head test across these printers was established in the research. Treat recommendations as feature-based guidance rather than claims of independent testing.

Choose paper for the image and printer
Paper substrate and coating affect the finished appearance and the way ink behaves. Select media for the artwork’s surface and contrast, then verify that it is compatible with the printer’s feed path, thickness limits, and settings. Do not assume that a generic “fine-art paper” setting is right for every paper.
- Matte fine-art paper: can suit artwork where a non-reflective surface is desired; check how the paper’s white and coating affect the image.
- Glossy or semi-gloss media: can give photographs a different surface and contrast; check how reflections and finish suit the work.
- Thick media: confirm the printer’s supported thickness and the appropriate loading path before purchase or printing.
- Roll media: confirm whether the roll unit is included or optional, and check supported widths and workflow for the specific model.
Use the paper maker’s profile when available and match the printer driver’s media setting to the exact paper. Consult both printer and paper manufacturers for compatibility rather than assuming profiles or settings transfer across models.
Color workflow and proofing
- Prepare an accurate source file and retain its embedded color profile.
- Install the profile for the specific printer and paper combination when one is available.
- Soft-proof for the selected media and inspect areas where the paper or process may limit the image.
- Choose whether the image application or printer manages color.
- Disable the other color-management layer to avoid applying color management twice.
- Select the correct paper type, feed path, orientation, and quality settings.
- Print a proof before committing a large or valuable sheet.
- Evaluate the print under consistent lighting; a screen emits light while paper reflects it, so an exact visual match is not guaranteed.
Print permanence: read claims carefully
Longevity estimates are conditional, not guarantees for every print. In its April 10, 2024 announcement for the P20570, Epson said permanence testing was in progress and quoted expected Wilhelm Imaging Research Display Permanence Ratings of up to 200 years for color prints and up to 400 years for black-and-white prints. The announcement also cautioned that actual stability varies with media, image, display conditions, light, humidity, and atmosphere.
Those expected ratings apply to the P20570 announcement’s stated context; do not transfer them to the SC-P900 or other printers. The research did not establish a current, independently confirmed permanence rating for the SC-P900.

When a fine-art lab may be a better choice
Owning a printer is not automatically the cheaper or easier option. A lab may be more practical if you print occasionally, need very wide output, or do not want to manage equipment, profiles, maintenance, supplies, and proofs. Compare turnaround, control, print sizes, fulfillment, and shipping for your particular needs; the research did not establish a universal break-even point.
FAQ
What printer do I need for fine-art prints?
Choose based on the largest print size and the amount you expect to produce. The SC-P900 is a desktop-format candidate with fine-art sheet feeding and an optional roll unit; the P20570 is a 64-inch production-class option for sustained wide-format work.
Does a printer make a print a giclée?
No universal certification or printer feature settles that question. “Giclée” is used for fine-art inkjet work; quality depends on the file, ink, compatible media, color workflow, settings, and handling.
Does a higher ink-colour count mean better prints?
Not by itself. Ink system is one factor, but the researched specifications do not prove a universal quality ranking, and no controlled head-to-head test was established.

Are the P20570 longevity figures guaranteed?
No. Epson’s April 10, 2024 announcement described testing as in progress and quoted expected ratings of up to 200 years for color and up to 400 years for black-and-white. It also said stability varies with media and conditions.
Should I buy a printer or use a fine-art lab?
Consider how often you print, the sizes you need, the control and turnaround you want, and the costs and time involved in ownership. Occasional or very wide-format work may make outsourcing worth comparing.
